Dems Press Gonzales on Justice Aide (MONICA GOODLING)

Dems Press Gonzales on Justice Aide By Paul Kiel - April 3, 2007, 3:12 PM For perhaps the first time in history, a Justice Department official has invoked the Fifth Amendment -- and remains in her position at the Department. In a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales today, Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy (D-VT) and committtee member Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) asked what the Justice Department was going to do about it. The first order of business, they said, was to figure out who to talk to at the Justice Department about Goodling. Ordinarily, they wrote, they would ask the Department about how to proceed, so as not to interfere with a possible criminal investigation. But ...

Let Kids Buy Vodka!

Let Kids Buy Vodka! by Manuel Lora by Manuel Lora DIGG THIS I remember buying beer and cigarettes for my parents when I was growing up in Peru. And I do not remember the following things: The seller being treated like a rapist and sent to prison The buyer (that would be me) being sent to some juvenile detention center My parents being treated like murderers Odd isn't it? To think that one would find a nugget of liberty in a poor ("developing" for the PC crowd) country might sound strange to some ears. Yet things today in these US of A are, well, a tad different to say the least. We live under the blessings of a Nanny-police state where every day it becomes harder to do ...

The Corporate State by Joshua Katz by Joshua Katz DIGG THIS The changes in the political scene since 9/11 have been vast. I would argue that the realignment of interests, and the changed meanings of political labels, signify the largest change since FDR altered our understanding of "liberalism." That the Democrats have become popular while not adapting to these changes is not a counterargument. It always takes politicians longer than us regular folks to understand the significant of changes, and popular support for the Democrats has grown out of a, perhaps misguided, hope that they would reverse Bush’s actions, if only for political reasons. These changes have been ...

The Pentagon's Crooked 'Judicial' Process

While Pentagon officials are celebrating the terrorism conviction of David Hicks in Guantanamo’s military-tribunal system, the process by which Hicks was convicted and sentenced only confirms that the Pentagon’s “judicial” system is as crooked as a dog’s hind leg. After all, most everyone knew that Hicks, who has been held at Guantanamo for more than five years without a trial, never stood a chance of acquittal, but who ever thought that politics would play the determining role in what purports to be a system of justice? On March 26, Hicks appeared before the military tribunal’s presiding judge, Col. Ralph Kohlmann, along with Hicks’ three lawyers, two of ...

War Whore Posted by Paul Gottfried on March 30, 2007 A young friend of mine, Chris Preble of CATO Institute, recently recounted to me an incident in which Republican controversialist Ann Coulter made a statement on FOX (where else?) that Chris found “particularly disgusting.” When asked whether the U.S. should launch an attack on Iran, Ann, true to bad form, responded “Think how much fun it would be to blow up Iranians.” Having heard this Republican equivalent of Alec Baldwin say equally scandalous things for years, I was not surprised to learn of her most recent infantile outburst. Like Chris, I despise Ann but the reason for my distaste may be different from his. ...

Supreme Court Rebukes Bush Administration On Greenhouse Gas

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court ordered the federal government today to take a fresh look at regulating carbon dioxide emissions from cars, a rebuke to Bush administration policy on global warming. In a 5-4 decision, the court said the Clean Air Act gives the Environmental Protection Agency the authority to regulate the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from cars. Connecticut and 11 other states, along with 13 environmental groups, sued the EPA over the issue.

Supreme Court rejects appeal from Guantanamo detainees

04/02/2007 07:19:11 AM PDT WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court rejected an appeal Monday from Guantanamo detainees who want challenge their five-year-long confinement in court, a victory for the Bush administration's legal strategy in its fight against terrorism. The victory may be only temporary, however. The high court twice previously has extended legal protections to prisoners at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. These individuals were seized as potential terrorists following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and only 10 have been charged with a crime. Despite the earlier rulings, none of the roughly 385 detainees has yet had a hearing in a civilian court challenging his detention because the ...

That Was A Trial?

While the Bush administration might try to paint the guilty plea by David Hicks plea as a triumph, the truth is that the Australian's conviction shows in painful detail just how illegitimate and dysfunctional the military commissions truly are. Five years after Guantánamo was opened to take detainees in the "war on terror," the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks are no closer to seeing justice done. The military commissions were supposed to prosecute the "worst of the worst;" instead, the very first conviction was for a mere nine months of continued incarceration, which would have been a slap on the wrist in the federal justice system that they abandoned as ...

AIPAC vs America

AIPAC vs America Exclusive to http://Rense.com Ted Lang 4-1-7 The embarrassing debacle of our sell-out political leaders and 2008 presidential hopefuls falling over themselves and elbowing each other to the podium of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee meeting held in Washington, DC between March 11th and 13th demonstrated clearly that our leaders put Israel first and America last. Fittingly, the hate conference was launched on Sunday, the Christian Sabbath. AIPAC has been exposed. Its role in putting America and its military needlessly in harm's way in Iraq, and now their smashing success in terrifying Nancy Pelosi into removing any and all restrictions formerly placed on ...

Due to its increasing practice of contracting out to private firms and agencies, the U.S. government is quickly losing its expertise and competence in vital national security and defense programs, according to a Wall Street Journal report. "Since the 2001 terrorist attacks and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the federal government's demand for complex technology has soared," writes by Bernard Wysocki, Jr. for the Journal. "But Washington often doesn't have the expertise to take on new high-tech projects, or the staff to oversee them. "As a result," he continues, "officials are increasingly turning to contractors, in particular the hundreds of companies ...

Washington's $8 Billion Shadow Mega-contractors such as Halliburton and Bechtel supply the government with brawn. But the biggest, most powerful of the "body shops"—SAIC, which employs 44,000 people and took in $8 billion last year—sells brainpower, including a lot of the "expertise" behind the Iraq war. by Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele March 2007 One of the great staples of the modern Washington movie is the dark and ruthless corporation whose power extends into every cranny around the globe, whose technological expertise is without peer, whose secrets are unfathomable, whose riches defy calculation, and whose network of allies, in and out of ...

The First Contract New questions arise concerning Mitchell Wade's first White House contract -- and his connections to the vice president. By Laura Rozen Web Exclusive: 03.30.07 From 1991 to 1993, a young lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserve was working as a program manager in a Pentagon intelligence office. His name was Mitchell John Wade. His boss, the assistant secretary of defense for command, control, communications and intelligence, was Duane P. Andrews. Andrews's job at the Pentagon was essentially to serve as intelligence advisor to the secretary of defense. The secretary of defense at the time was someone that Andrews knew well and respected immensely: Dick Cheney. ...

MADSEN: V'S DEMONSTRATE AT WHITE HOUSE

March 31-April 1, 2007 -- "Vs" stage protest at White House. About 60 protesters dressed up as the Guy Fawkes look-a-like "V," from the movie by the same name, staged a protest at the White House yesterday. In an encouraging sign, a group of elementary school children visiting the White House on a school trip were much more interested in "V" than in the White House or its occupant. The children busied themselves taking photos of the "Vs" and shaking their hands: a clear sign that the Rove/Fox propaganda machine has little effect on those who will be left holding the tab for the recklessness of the "Baby Boomer" generation. The protest was ...

Waxman asks Rice to testify By Klaus Marre March 30, 2007 After not receiving a response to written questions, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) is asking Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to testify before the panel on a variety of issues, including the administration’s claim that Iraq was trying to obtain uranium from Niger. The hearing, which Waxman wants to hold April 18, would also cover the White House treatment of classified information and other subjects. However, the lawmaker indicated that the date is flexible if that day does not work for Rice.

Bush's Long History of Tilting Justice

Bush's long history of tilting Justice The administration began skewing federal law enforcement before the current U.S. attorney scandal, says a former Department of Justice lawyer. By Joseph D. Rich, JOSEPH D. RICH was chief of the voting section in the Justice Department's civil right division from 1999 to 2005. He now works for the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. March 29, 2007 THE SCANDAL unfolding around the firing of eight U.S. attorneys compels the conclusion that the Bush administration has rewarded loyalty over all else. A destructive pattern of partisan political actions at the Justice Department started long before this incident, however, as those ...

Pardon Scooter Libby, and pardon a million more

As a libertarian, I am of course appalled by the moral outrages committed by Scooter Libby. He and his clique conspired to lie and manipulate the United States into a murderous war. But what has he been convicted of? Obstruction of justice? Lying to authorities? And what did he lie to them about? Ultimately, he is in hot water for leaking the name of a CIA spy. Are these acts, in themselves, crimes? It would seem to me that exposing a CIA agent isn’t even a crime in itself, since it’s just free speech. Why are government secrets legitimate, anyway? Yes, his motives were evil, but should he be punished for these acts? Now, I understand that many libertarians will think I’m ...

BATF Targets Idaho Gun Shops

The BATF has shut down 2 gun stores in Twin Falls, Idaho for what they admit are minor paperwork violations. People in Idaho - please call Senators Larry Craig and Mike Crapo and their House member, Bill Sali or Mike Simpson. Ask them what they are doing about this travesty. If you don't live in Idaho, call your senators and representatives anyway because the BATF is probably doing this to gun shop owners in your state as well. Obviously their strategy is not to go after gun owners - NOT YET.... rather they are shutting down gun shops. We can't allow this to stand - especially now the BUSHWHACKERS have left our borders unguarded and we are being invaded. BATFE Killing ...
