In the Great Counter-Revolution of 1968 the United States unofficially ended Post Date: 2007-02-23 12:01:32 by intotheabyss

Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. (left) and Robert F. Kennedy (right) who were leaders of a "Second American Revolution", who were genuine and passionate champions against oppression and fascism in general, were both assassinated in 1968. Most readers will immediately wonder how it can be argued that the United States as a "Great Experiment in Democracy" could have actually ended in 1968. This can be readily illuminated. If Americans had effective control in their own society, there would be no pre-emptive Iraq War based upon 'well-documented' evidence. Furthermore, Americans would now be living in peace in the world, having ready access to such social programmes as ...

"TITLES OF NOBILITY" AND "HONOR" In the winter of 1983, archival research expert David Dodge, and former Baltimore police investigator Tom Dunn, were searching for evidence of government corruption in public records stored in the Belfast Library on the coast of Maine. By chance, they discovered the library's oldest authentic copy of the Constitution of the United States (printed in 1825). Both men were ...

America, Now Without the Revolution by Arthur Silber by Arthur Silber DIGG THIS From my essay, "Understanding the Significance of Guantanamo: The Symbol of Omnipotent Power," written almost two years ago, in May 2005: And that, in brief, is why Guantanamo is so crucial to the Bush's administration's goals in its war, a war that will be never-ending if it has its way: Guantanamo symbolizes the Bush administration's desire for omnipotent power for the administration to be able to do whatever it wants, with no oversight or interference by anyone, including the federal judiciary and including those restraints imposed by the Constitution itself. In this manner, ...

Florida Bill Would Make It Legal To Falsify Court Records (Winter Patriot) Our friend and colleague Winter Patriot unearths a disturbing new innovation in law enforcement now being pushed down in JebWorld: giving public officials the authority to create phony documents and plant them in public record. This includes court documents and other official papers, all created out of whole cloth in "covert ops" kept secret from other agencies and from surely it goes without saying that worthless gaggle of teeming rabble known as "the people." This astounding proposal in a bill now being dangled like so much dripping red meat before the rightwing Florida ...

Yonat Shimron and Kinea White Epps, Staff Writers RALEIGH - A national Muslim advocacy group has rebuked the Wake County Public School system for allowing a Christian evangelist to speak at Enloe High School and distribute pamphlets denouncing Islam. The Council on American Islamic Relations said the school system will have created a "discriminatory, hostile learning environment," violating federal civil rights law, if it does not investigate the incident and apologize to students. The complaint stems from a guest appearance last week in several classes by Kamil Solomon, a Raleigh-based Christian evangelist, who urged students to shun Muslims."When you bring in somebody to ...

While on the way to the grocery store, I found myself behind a eunich with a bumbersticker that had the above statement on it. Not surprising, the eunich also had a "W - The President" bumper sticker. My how the great have fallen. Benjamin Franklin, who said that, "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety," is spinning in his grave. The citizens of the United States are like the immoral, degenerate, and pampered nobility of 16th and 17th nobility, who were noblemen only because of the bravery of their earlier medieval relatives. I am truly ashamed and embarrassed.

George Wills curt dismissal of Rep. Ron Paul in Wills recent Newsweek editorial requires further examination. According to Will, Paul "believes, with more stubbornness than evidence, that the federal government is a government of strictly enumerated powers." Will rightly points to Article I, § 8 as the enumeration of the powers of Congress. What does the august Mr. Will mean, exactly, in claiming that Rep. Pauls position is based on "more stubbornness than evidence"? He does not say. But he should. As John Taylor of Caroline noted in New Views of the Constitution (1823), the Philadelphia Convention (in which the federal Constitution was drafted) ...

Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols says a high-ranking FBI official "apparently" was directing Timothy McVeigh in the plot to blow up a government building and might have changed the original target of the attack, according to a new affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Utah. The official and other conspirators are being protected by the federal government "in a cover-up to escape its responsibility for the loss of life in Oklahoma," Nichols claims in a Feb. 9 affidavit. Documents that supposedly help back up his allegations have been sealed to protect information in them, such as Social Security numbers and dates of birth. The U.S. Attorney's Office ...

Setting the stage for a U.S. Supreme Court showdown, a federal appeals panel sided 2-1 with the Bush administration Tuesday and denied Guantánamo Bay captives the right to challenge their detention in lower federal courts. The Justice Department hailed the decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia as a victory in its campaign to close the files on hundreds of Guantánamo captives' challenges at the U.S. District Court in the nation's capital. Amnesty International USA urged Congress to quickly pass new legislation that would effectively reverse the decision, and attorneys for detainees urged the Supreme Court to take up the issue promptly. ...

February 20, 2007 -- Immigrant-rights activists yesterday renewed their push to allow legal noncitizens to vote in the Big Apple. A bill that would grant permanent residents and other legal immigrants the right to vote in municipal elections has been stalled in the City Council since last year. "More than 50,000 adult noncitizen taxpayers in those two districts are disenfranchised by citizenship voting laws," said Cheryl Wertz, of New Immigrant Community Empowerment, referring to today's special election for council seats in Brooklyn and Staten Island. Councilman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn), the sponsor of the Voting Rights Restoration Act, said that years ago, when ...

Let's say your teenager is a habitual truant and there is nothing you can do about it. A Washington area politician thinks he might have the solution: Fit the child with a Global Positioning System chip, then have police track him down. "It allows them to get caught easier," said Maryland Delegate Doyle Niemann (D-Prince George's), who recently co-sponsored legislation in the House that would use electronic surveillance as part of a broader truancy reduction plan. "It's going to be done unobtrusively. The chips are tiny and can be put into a hospital ID band or a necklace." Excuse me. But that is obscene. Electronic monitoring is used by criminal court ...
Pentagon investigates Blackwater's expense tab Post Date: 2007-02-20 10:48:25 by Eoghan

A two-year investigation has finally begun to shed some light on the trail of taxpayer dollars that paid for Blackwater USA's famously ill-fated security mission in Fallujah, Iraq, in March 2004. Blackwater's contract was less than a month old when four of its security operatives were ambushed and killed, some of their bodies mutilated and hung from a bridge in an incident that changed the course of the Iraq war. Blackwater was at the bottom of a four-tiered chain of contractors. The Moyock, N.C.-based company says it billed the next company up the chain $2.3 million. At the top of the chain was KBR, a subsidiary of Vice President Dick Cheney's former employer, Halliburton ...
Will vs. Paul on the Constitutional Limits of Government Post Date: 2007-02-20 06:26:54 by Ada

George Wills current Newsweek column is garnering a lot of attention in the right-wing blogosphere. (See here and here, for example.) The article discusses Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) and his potential run for the GOP presidential nomination. Since the big three candidates, McCain, Romney, and Giuliani, are getting all the coverage, Wills decision to cover a dark horse candidate like Rep. Paul is interesting. I guess Rep. Paul and his supporters could take heart in the old adage that there is no such thing as bad press, although that applies to Hollywood more so than it does to Washington, DC. The article is superficially flattering. It portrays Rep. Paul as a man of firm convictions. ...

Making Martial Law Easier Post Date: 2007-02-19 13:01:06 by Brian S

A disturbing recent phenomenon in Washington is that laws that strike to the heart of American democracy have been passed in the dead of night. So it was with a provision quietly tucked into the enormous defense budget bill at the Bush administrations behest that makes it easier for a president to override local control of law enforcement and declare martial law. The provision, signed into law in October, weakens two obscure but important bulwarks of liberty. One is the doctrine that bars military forces, including a federalized National Guard, from engaging in law enforcement. Called posse comitatus, it was enshrined in law after the Civil War to preserve the line between civil ...

To Restore Democracy : First Abolish Corporate Personhood By Thom Hartmann For twenty years corporate personhood was debated. Across America, politicians were elected repeatedly on platforms that included the regulation of corporations, particularly the railroads. But the legal fight continued - and in 1886 the railroad hit paydirt. It has been thought, he wrote in The Rights of Man in 1791,
that government is a compact between those who govern and those who are governed; but this cannot be true, because it is putting the effect before the cause; for as man must have existed before governments existed, there necessarily was a time when governments did not exist, ...
