Our mercenaries in Iraq The president relies on thousands of private soldiers with little oversight, a disturbing example of the military-industrial complex. By Jeremy Scahill, JEREMY SCAHILL is a fellow at the Nation Institute and the author of the forthcoming "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army." January 25, 2007 AS PRESIDENT BUSH took the podium to deliver his State of the Union address Tuesday, there were five American families receiving news that has become all too common: Their loved ones had been killed in Iraq. But in this case, the slain were neither "civilians," as the news reports proclaimed, nor were they U.S. soldiers. They ...
Bush Administration Wants Spying Lawsuit Dropped Post Date: 2007-01-26 11:35:26 by Brian S

Friday, January 26, 2007; 1:48 AM WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration sought on Thursday to drop its appeal of a federal court ruling that concluded the government's domestic spying program is unconstitutional, saying the entire issue is moot since the surveillance now is monitored by a secret court. Responding, lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union said they would continue to push for their day in court since President Bush retains authority to continue the warrantless spying program. The Justice Department's request has been expected since last week, when Attorney General Alberto Gonzales disclosed that the secret panel of judges who oversee the Foreign Intelligence ...

Texas Mayor Wants to Outlaw the N-word Post Date: 2007-01-25 20:29:05 by SmokinOPs

The mayor of a small Texas town wants to make people pay -- literally -- for saying the N-word. Ken Corley, mayor of Brazoria, Texas, is proposing a citywide ordinance that would make uttering the racial slur punishable by up to a $500 fine. Recent comments by the Rev. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson about phasing out the N-word inspired Corley, who is white. Although the slur is largely taboo, Corley said he still believes he needs to take a stand. "It's not an issue in the city of Brazoria
It is a national issue," he said. "The word is used and abused, obviously, or they wouldn't have been talking about it on national TV. It would be great [for the town] to ...
U.S. Military Spied on Hundreds of Antiwar Demos; At least 186 antiwar protests have been monitored Post Date: 2007-01-25 14:02:29 by Brian S

Thu., Jan. 25, 2007 SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 24 (OneWorld) - At least 186 antiwar protests in the United States have been monitored by the Pentagon's domestic surveillance program, according to documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which also found that the Defense Department collected more than 2,800 reports involving Americans in a single anti-terrorism database. The documents were obtained by the ACLU through a Freedom of Information Act request filed last February. "It cannot be an accident or coincidence that nearly 200 antiwar protests ended up in a Pentagon threat database," Ann Beeson, associate legal director of the ACLU, said in a statement. ...
Pentagon PSYOPs directed against Saturday DC anti-war marchers. Post Date: 2007-01-25 11:28:00 by robin

January 25, 2007 -- Pentagon PSYOPs directed against Saturday DC anti-war marchers. First, the corporate media attempted to ignore the January 27 anti-war march on Washington. As the Internet and progressive talk radio spread the word about the march and groups around the nation began to mobilize their members to participate in it, the Bush administration -- now armed with all sorts of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) "non-lethal" toys, decided to stage a test of an anti-crowd microwave weapon, code named "Sheriff," in a demonstration for the media at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia. On January 24, the military demonstrated its Active Denial System (ADS) ...
Gonzales says the Constitution doesn't guarantee habeas corpus Post Date: 2007-01-25 05:44:58 by Ada

Attorney general's remarks on citizens' right astound the chair of Senate judiciary panel One of the Bush administration's most far-reaching assertions of government power was revealed quietly last week when Attorney General Alberto Gonzales testified that habeas corpus -- the right to go to federal court and challenge one's imprisonment -- is not protected by the Constitution. "The Constitution doesn't say every individual in the United States or every citizen is hereby granted or assured the right of habeas,'' Gonzales told Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Jan. 17. Gonzales acknowledged that the Constitution ...

WASHINGTON--The Bush administration hasn't settled on what data it would like Internet service providers to retain about their subscribers or for how long, a U.S. Department of Justice attorney said Tuesday. U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales made it clear last fall that he planned to seek national legislation requiring the controversial practice known as data retention, but "we don't have any position officially about how long records would have to be retained or what records would have to be retained," said Eric Wenger, a trial attorney with the Justice Department's computer crime unit. During an event here hosted by the Federal Communications Bar Association, ...

http://skepdic.com/remotevw.html remote viewing Remote viewing is the alleged psychic ability to perceive places, persons and actions that are not within the range of the senses. Remote viewing might well be called psychic dowsing. Instead of a twig or other device, one uses psychic power alone to dowse the entire galaxy, if need be, for whatever one wants: oil, mountains on Jupiter, a lost child, a buried body, a hostage site thousands of miles away, inside the Pentagon or the Kremlin, etc. Ingo Swann and Harold Sherman claim to have done remote viewing of Mercury and Jupiter. Dr. Russell Targ and Dr. Harold Puthoff studied Swann and Sherman, and reported that their remote viewing ...

Bushs Get-Out-Of-Impeachment Card by: Patriot Daily Mon Feb 27, 2006 at 10:13:28 AM PST A perfect impeachment storm is brewing. While the MSM does not cover the story, the White House is truly concerned that Bush faces real impeachment risk for the NSA scandal. A majority of Americans (52%) want Congress to impeach Bush if he wiretapped without a judges approval. It is not just Democrats. Moreover, only 36% supported hearings to consider Clintons impeachment. Even GOP Senator Specter agreed that if it is determined that Bush violated the law, both impeachment and criminal prosecution are legitimate remedies. The Bush team was so worried that Senate hearings would ...

January 23, 2007, 5:37 PM EST WASHINGTON -- Dozens of mayors from around the country gathered Tuesday to urge the new Democratic Congress to fight crime by allowing wider tracking of illegal guns. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino were joined by 50 other mayors, who argue more access to gun sales data would reduce crime in the streets of their cities. Minneapolis, Miami, Newark, N.J., and Omaha, Neb., were among the cities represented. Bloomberg, a moderate Republican, said it was time to "begin showing Congress that it is possible to find common ground on common sense issues." "We refuse to fall into the same old trap that it is an ...

January 23, 2007 -- As Europe and Southeast Asia moves further towards free trade and transit areas, George Bush's fascist/fortress America now requires Canadians and Mexicans -- our so-called "NAFTA partners" -- to have passports to enter the United States. In addition, American travelers to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Caribbean islands are now required to have a passport to enter the United States. The Bush/Michael Chertoff policies on entry into the United States have resulted in drastic financial losses for the U.S. travel and hospitality industries. According to our European correspondent, the 86,000 attendees at the largest Nordic Travel Expo in Helsinki, ...

Sometimes officials of the Bush Administration have me wondering who really won the Cold War. Such was the case when Attorney General Alberto Gonzales testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 18th, in his conversation about habeas corpus with Senator Arlen Specter (R-Penn.): Gonzales: The fact that the Constitution again, there is no express grant of habeas [corpus] in the Constitution. There is a prohibition against taking it away. But its never been the case, and Im not a Supreme Specter: Now, wait a minute. Wait a minute. The Constitution says you cant take it away, except in the case of rebellion or invasion. Doesnt that mean ...

Why anti-discrimination laws make quotas inevitable Post Date: 2007-01-22 20:28:28 by Peetie Wheatstraw

A woman reader writes: "And while we're at it, for the record as a member of a so-called protected group (hard to argue that women constitute a minority in this country), I take great offense at the notion that standards need to be watered down for me to compete against anyone. I'm perfectly capable of competing on the only criterion that counts: performance. What I do take exception to is when people erect arbitrary "standards" that have little or nothing to do with performance in order to keep us "broads in our place"." This points out why utterly colorblind and/or sex-blind anti-discrimination laws like the famous Civil Rights Act of 1964 ...
FOLLOW UP TO Attorney General Gonzales claim that we have no right of habeas corpus. Post Date: 2007-01-22 12:10:21 by richard9151

Attorney General Gonzales is correct, because he is referring to all United States citizen, who live in the several states as RESIDENTS, and have contracted with Congress for priviliges and benefits. That makes United States citizens SUBJECT to Congress, and removes all inalienable rights. Richard John Perna wrote: FOLLOW UP TO Attorney General Gonzales claim that we have no right of habeas corpus. What is really fascinating about the Attorney General Gonzales position is the revealing look that it gives into his mind set. There is no specific "grant" of habeas corpus in the constitution, because inalienable rights are not given to us by government. Our founding fathers did ...

Gonzo the Bozo by Becky Akers by Becky Akers DIGG THIS The Attorney General of the United States actually testified last Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee that "the Constitution doesnt say, Every individual in the United States or every citizen is hereby granted or assured the right to habeas [corpus]." Whoa. You might think a weasel like Alberto Gonzales would leave himself some wiggle room after advancing a claim this bold, but no. He continued, "It doesn't say that. It simply says that the right of habeas corpus shall not be suspended..." And here wed hoped that only Supreme Court justices harbored this much contempt for ...

In June 1935, British author E. M. Forster addressed an international writers' congress called to discuss ways of defending culture against the threat of fascism. In England, the author of A Passage to India observed, "our traditions and our liberties are closely connected," freedom having been "praised for
several hundred of years." English freedom was race- and class-bound, he conceded, "but the fact that our rulers have to pretend to like freedom is an advantage." The same can be said about the civil rights struggle in this country; in the Fifties and Sixties, the nation could no longer pretend that the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution and ...

One of the disheartening things I have seen in 4um is the belief that seems to be carried by a number of posters here that, somehow, all of what is going on with the United States and its military is new; that George Bush and his pappy were the first to really, really reach out and touch the world with the US soldiers. Nothing, but nothing, could be further from the truth! -- Excerpt from a speech delivered in 1933, by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC. War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the ...

The Federal War on Gold by Jacob G. Hornberger Given the rising price of gold and the fact that federal spending is totally out of control, the prospect of gold confiscation and criminalizing the private ownership of gold by federal authorities inevitably rears its ugly head. There are few things that federal big spenders hate more than gold. Why? Because they know that, historically, gold has provided the best means by which people could protect themselves against the ravages of a rapidly depreciating currency. The mainstream press often uses the term 60;inflation61; to describe rising prices. That57;s incorrect. Actually, when the general price level is rising, that57;s a result of ...

The United States has already won in Iraq The original intention of Operation Iraq was to prevent the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction against that region. We never found any Weapons of Mass Destruction. Then we changed the mission into deposing Saddam Hussein. Saddam Hussein has been hanged. These stated missions have been accomplished. American should ask this: WHAT WOULD HAVE TO HAPPEN BEFORE WE WOULD CONCLUDE THAT WE SHOULD LEAVE IRAQ? While we are "chasing terrorists" in their own country, what are we doing about the thousands who walk across our own borders every day? Americans have already won the Operation in Iraq. NOW Bush is hinting that we must resolve all of ...
