THE ELIMINATION OF THE NATIONAL DEBT IN 1835 - AND THE MEANING OF JACKSONIAN DEMOCRACY Economic and Business Historical Society, David O. Whitten, EBHS, Archivist and By Carl Lane Professor of History Felician College Lodi & Rutherford, New Jersey On January 1, 1835, the United States paid off entirely its longstanding public debt. For that year and the next the nation enjoyed debt-freedom, the only two years in its entire history when it held no obligation to creditors. For this reason the years 1835-1836 are unique and significant, but, oddly enough, historians of Jacksonian America have overlooked what this financial circumstance and its anticipation meant to the era.1 This ...
W Pushes Envelope On U.S. Spying; New postal law lets Bush peek through your mail Post Date: 2007-01-04 11:37:13 by Brian S

WASHINGTON - President Bush has quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant, the Daily News has learned. The President asserted his new authority when he signed a postal reform bill into law on Dec. 20. Bush then issued a "signing statement" that declared his right to open people's mail under emergency conditions. That claim is contrary to existing law and contradicted the bill he had just signed, say experts who have reviewed it. Bush's move came during the winter congressional recess and a year after his secret domestic electronic eavesdropping program was first revealed. It caught Capitol Hill by surprise. ...
Spence: $2M settlement underscores loss of freedom Post Date: 2007-01-04 05:52:23 by Ada

Fresh from winning a $2 million settlement in a suit against the FBI for wrongly tying an Oregon lawyer to the Madrid bombing case, Jackson Hole attorney Gerry Spence warned Tuesday of growing fascism in America. Spence was the lead attorney in a case brought by Oregon lawyer Brandon Mayfield against the FBI for his arrest in the case that saw 191 people killed in Spain. The FBI began investigating Mayfield after computers said his fingerprints came close to matching a print found on a bag containing explosive detonators connected to the March 11, 2004, bombing. Mayfield announced the settlement last week in Portland, Ore., but the flamboyant Spence has been missing from many of the news ...
NRA comic called a hoax, but accusations later withdrawn Post Date: 2007-01-03 22:50:14 by rack42

A controversial, leaked graphic novel that may have been produced to bolster the National Rifle Association's agenda was called a hoax over the weekend. But further analysis of the source material appears to confirm that the purported NRA publication, which contains alarming racial overtones, is legitimate. Last Friday, the website Wonkette published exclusive images from Freedom in Peril: Guarding the 2nd Amendment in the 21st Century. The expertly illustrated graphic novel alleges a coordinated strategy on the part of gun control advocates to roll back the second amendment and strip Americans of their rights to bear arms. Many of the images contained in the graphic novel suggest ...

Spider-Man lassos White House in his web Its hard not to think of the Bush administration when thumbing through the latest The Amazing Spider-Man comic (#536). First, some background (and you probably dont need to be a rocket scientist to see the parallels): In Marvel Comics ahem Civil War story arc, the U.S. government passes the Superhuman Registration Act after hundreds of innocent American men, women and children become collateral damage in a superhero-related tragedy (the president of the United States even swings by the disaster site to assess the damage). The act mandates registration of all superheroes with the ...

"The Good Shepherd" is actually pretty good Posted by Daniel McCarthy at December 24, 2006 02:31 AM To my surprise, the movie is not the glorification of CIA skulduggery that the previews had led me to expect. As a film, it's well-made and rewards attentive viewing. But it's particularly interesting thematically, especially for moviegoers of a libertarian bent. Slight spoilers follow... The best scene in the movie is when the CIA picks up a Russian defector who claims to be another Russian defector whom they've already picked up. So the agents waterboard him, pound him into hamburger, and finally fry his mind with LSD -- all tactics that appear to be about as ...

Sen. Leahy's request for White House detainee docs denied RAW STORY Published: Wednesday January 3, 2007 A key Democratic U.S. senator reveals that the government turned down his request for documents pertaining to the White House's treatment of detainees, Congressional Quarterly is reporting. "The Justice Department has rebuffed a Senate request for documents related to the Bush administration's policy on the detention and interrogation of suspected terrorists, particularly those held by the CIA," writes Keith Perine for CQ. Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-VT) "requested the documents from Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales on Nov. 16, after the CIA ...
Homeland Security, UN-Constitutional, Illegal and Dangerous Post Date: 2007-01-03 08:52:30 by IndieTX

Listening to faux conservative pundits on our airwaves, I am amazed at their duplicity. It seems that trashing the United States Constitution is fine so long as it is a Republican doing the trashing. The Homeland Security bill is the latest frontal assault on our freedom and it is being done by that darling of the faux conservatives, George W. Bush. Hiding behind the specter of a phony and unjustified war against Iraq (while simultaneously ignoring the fact that the Al Qaeda have re-grouped in Pakistan and stand poised to launch yet another major terror attack against our nation), the Bush administration is pandering to the fears of some segments of the American public who believe that ...
Pelosi Set to Attack Conservatives (The Bill of Rights) Post Date: 2007-01-02 14:45:11 by Horse

Leading Capitol Hill watchdogs are sounding alarms by plans of the soon-to-be Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and her majority of House Democrats to ram through a new law that would seriously undermine free speech and put restrictions on conservative groups and others who encourage ordinary citizens to directly deal with Congress. Pelosi has already stated she is planning to push through major legislation during the first 100 session hours after the Democrats take control of Congress this week. At the top of the list is seemingly good legislation intended to curb the power of lobbyists. But the Pelosi law goes far beyond bridling Washington influence peddlers. Under ...

COMMUNITARIANISM - THE DICTATORSHIP OF EVERYTHING Nancy Levant January 2, 2007 http://NewsWithViews.com Let us start with the premise the title offers. Let us assume that our Constitution and three branches of government, our state constitutions and governors, our schools and universities, our health care systems, taxation systems, all regional and appointed governing bodies, commissions, and councils; our churches and synagogues, our military, land and watershed systems, and all forms of licensure and credentialing, including travel, are under the governing auspices of internationally emerging laws. Then let us try to figure out what is not under global dictatorship specifically ...

Eliot Spitzer's Constitutional Hang-up by Joshua Frank http://www.dissidentvoice.org December 30, 2006 New York will soon be inaugurating a new governor and many liberals here and across the country are excited about the prospect of having a celebrated K Street watchdog scale the ranks of the Democratic Party. Voters ushered Spitzer into office in unprecedented fashion last November, with almost 70% casting their vote for his sweeping crusade. Spitzer, like young Barack Obama, is often seen as the face of a new, invigorated Democratic Party -- one that isn't afraid to shine its progressive credentials. Eliot Spitzer, unfortunately, is anything but progressive. In many ways he ...
US 'licence to snoop' on British air travellers Post Date: 2007-01-01 01:37:42 by Horse

Britons flying to America could have their credit card and email accounts inspected by the United States authorities following a deal struck by Brussels and Washington. By using a credit card to book a flight, passengers face having other transactions on the card inspected by the American authorities. Providing an email address to an airline could also lead to scrutiny of other messages sent or received on that account. The extent of the demands were disclosed in "undertakings" given by the US Department of Homeland Security to the European Union and published by the Department for Transport after a Freedom of Information request. About four million Britons travel to America ...

Newt Gingrich's First Amendment Post Date: 2006-12-29 23:41:21 by Brian S

Newt Gingrich is one of the most intelligent public figures in this land. Over the years, hearing this former history professor talk and write on the health-care system, education and other issues, I've learned a lot. Even when I've often disagreed with him, he's made me think. On first hearing he might run for president in 2008, I thought I might have a candidate who has a mind of his own that works. But then came his Nov. 27 Manchester, N.H., speech at the annual Loeb First Amendment dinner. Newt Gingrich proposed a serious national dialogue about the First Amendment - what it protects, and what it should not protect. He's right, and I also agree thoroughly ...

Gen. Augusto Pinochet served as president of Chile during a troubled period of that countrys history. His fate was to become the worlds most demonized person in the last quarter of the 20th century, and his death on December 10, 2006, was met with a new outpouring of denunciation by the international left. Just as the neoconservative Bush regime had no factual basis for its demonization of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein as a threat who would arm terrorists with weapons of mass destruction to be used against America, the international left has scant evidence in behalf of its demonization of Pinochet. Unlike Bushs war on terror in which US troops are fighting abroad, ...

The Justice Department is building a massive database that allows state and local police officers around the country to search millions of case files from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and other federal law enforcement agencies, according to Justice officials. The system, known as "OneDOJ," already holds approximately 1 million case records and is projected to triple in size over the next three years, Justice officials said. The files include investigative reports, criminal-history information, details of offenses, and the names, addresses and other information of criminal suspects or targets, officials said. The database is billed by its supporters as a much-needed ...

Real money meets virtual reality: Designers sell items in online world, but who legally owns their creations? By By Alan Sipress Veronica Brown is a hot fashion designer, making a living off the virtual lingerie and formalwear she sells inside the online fantasy world Second Life. She expects to have earned about $60,000 this year from people who buy her digital garments to outfit their animated self-images in this fast-growing virtual community. But Brown got an unnerving reminder last month of how tenuous her livelihood is when a rogue software program that copies animated objects appeared in Second Life. Scared that their handiwork could be cloned and sold by others, Brown and her ...

In the end, the taxman cares not who you worship, as long as he gets what he thinks is owed to him." The above sentence is blarney. Paying money to the tax man is an act of worship. Worship is exactly defined by the tendering of a sacrifice on the nicoliatan altar. You lack understanding what "worship" is. It is an act of homage, they are synonymous. Homage is to pay taxes, rent, or labor to a lord. So the tax man is there to ensure you worship the government, to pay your tribute. Freedom of religion is allowed by the benevolent dictatorship of social engineers, as long as it is not real religion that would conflict with your homage to the church of the incorporated ...

Forest Service rule disputed - Comments from public will no longer be added to some agency plans Corinne Purtill The Arizona Republic Dec. 23, 2006 12:00 AM Conservation groups are angry about a new rule from the U.S. Forest Service that they say will diminish the public's voice in how their forests are used. Earlier this month the Forest Service implemented changes to the 15-year management plans required of each national forest and grassland. One of the major changes involves no longer including an environmental-impact statement. In practical terms, this means that each forest plan, which outlines which parts of the forest should be used for different activities, will no longer ...
