BREAKING: McCain Reaches Agreement With Bush On Military Tribunals NBC News reports that President Bush and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) have reached a deal on military tribunals. Details of the compromise have yet to be released, but according to news accounts, the White House has dropped its insistence on redefining the obligations of the United States under the Geneva Conventions. No word yet on whether Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R-PA) has also agreed to the compromise. Specter earlier took issue with the McCain, Warner, and Graham position: I disagree with Senator McCain, Graham and Warner and the president trying to eliminate habeas corpus, that is ...

(09-21) 08:43 PDT Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- New federal security rules for issuing driver's licenses could cost $11 billion to implement, raising concerns among states about paying for the changes, according to a national survey of states released Thursday. "There's no question that state legislators believe driver's licenses should be as secure as is possible," said William Pound, executive director of the National Conference of State Legislatures which helped conduct the survey. "The $11 billion question is, 'Who's going to pay for it?'" The requirements which are not final are part of the Real ID Act of 2005, which grew out of a recommendation by the ...

WASHINGTON Sep 21, 2006 (AP) The Bush administration asked an appeals court Thursday to step in immediately and dismiss a lawsuit over the government's warrantless eavesdropping program, calling a lower judge's ruling dangerous and wrong. The Justice Department asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn the decision earlier this month by U.S. District Judge Garr King in Portland, Ore., that kept the suit alive. Government attorneys argued that continuing the case would risk the disclosure of "highly sensitive foreign intelligence information." The lawsuit was filed by the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, which had a chapter in Ashland, Ore., that went out of ...

Bush Administration And Its Allies Seek to Restrict Detainees’ Access to Courts Post Date: 2006-09-20 22:12:14 by Brian S

Although the effort has been partly obscured by the highly publicized wrangling over military commissions for war crimes trials, the Bush administration and its allies in Congress are trying to use the same legislation to strip federal courts of their authority to review the detentions of almost all terrorism suspects. Both the legislation introduced on behalf of the administration and the competing bill sponsored by a group of largely Republican opponents in the Senate include a provision that would bar foreigners held abroad from using the federal trial courts for challenges to detention known as habeas corpus lawsuits. If the provision was enacted, it would mean that all of the lawsuits ...

I'm currently on the air and thus not able to look into it further, so I've not been able to get any explanation for this. But I thought you should know. According to leaked documents, the guest list included such prominent figures as U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Mexican Secretary of ...

Frist Warns GOP Opponents of Bush's Proposal They Must Accept Two Key Provisions Wednesday, September 20, 2006; A04 Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist signaled yesterday that he and other White House allies will filibuster a bill dealing with the interrogation and prosecution of detainees if they cannot persuade a rival group of Republicans to rewrite key provisions opposed by President Bush. Frist's chief of staff, Eric M. Ueland, called the dissidents' bill "dead." With Congress scheduled to adjourn in nine days, delaying tactics such as a filibuster could kill the drive to enact detainee legislation before the Nov. 7 elections, a White House priority. Bush faced still more ...

(09-19) 15:01 PDT San Francisco (AP) -- San Diego County investigators can search welfare applicants' houses without warrants to prevent fraud and ensure they are eligible for assistance, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday. Welfare advocates unsuccessfully claimed the searches, which include peeking in closets and cabinets, are unconstitutional. Under the program adopted in 1997 to cut down on fraud, unarmed investigators from the district attorney's office arrive unannounced at applicants' houses to verify assets. They also conduct interviews, determine if eligible dependents live there and certify an "absent" parent does not live there. The American Civil Liberties ...

I do not know if other participants in these Hearings have take the time to research the accounts of these historical debates when formulating the suggestions they will present to this Committee, but, having researched the Founders' original tax reform package, I am inclined to believe its fundamental principals are as valid today as when they were put into practice over two hundred years ...

WASHINGTON Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Tuesday that Congress should require Internet service providers to preserve customer records, asserting that prosecutors need them to fight child pornography. Testifying to a Senate panel, Gonzales acknowledged the concerns of some company executives who say legislation might be overly intrusive and encroach on customers' privacy rights. But he said the growing threat of child pornography over the Internet was too great. This is a problem that requires federal legislation, Gonzales told the Senate Banking Committee. We need information. Information helps us makes cases. He called the government's lack of ...

Security Analysis of the Diebold AccuVote-TS Voting Machine Ariel J. Feldman, J. Alex Halderman, and Edward W. Felten Abstract This paper presents a fully independent security study of a Diebold AccuVote-TS voting machine, including its hardware and software. We obtained the machine from a private party. Analysis of the machine, in light of real election procedures, shows that it is vulnerable to extremely serious attacks. For example, an attacker who gets physical access to a machine or its removable memory card for as little as one minute could install malicious code; malicious code on a machine could steal votes undetectably, modifying all records, logs, and counters to be ...

Hotel minibar keys open Diebold voting machines by lambertstrether [Subscribe] Mon Sep 18, 2006 at 10:58:28 AM PDT Oh. My. God. Via Freedom to Tinker: On Wednesday we did a live demo for our Princeton Computer Science colleagues of the vote-stealing software described in our paper and video. Afterward, Chris Tengi, a technical staff member, asked to look at the key that came with the voting machine. He noticed an alphanumeric code printed on the key, and remarked that he had a key at home with the same code on it. The next day he brought in his key and sure enough it opened the voting machine. This seemed like a freakish coincidence -- until we learned how common these keys are. ...

And now you can't bring your cup of coffee on board the airplane. It's the latest new rule laid down by the nation's security wizards. Everyone knows it's ridiculous - the notion that you can toss together a few liquids and make an explosive is a fiction from late-night movies. You might as well prohibit bald men on the grounds that the evil Lex Luthor was bald and so was Blofeld, the head of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. But we ditch our venti latte in the trash barrel (goodbye, four bucks) and board the flight, and there we read in the paper that aggressive CIA questioning of an al-Qaida bigwig, stripping him, ...

A Very Inconvenient Document by Vin Suprynowicz Thanks to a 2004 law authored by U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., every American school and college that receives federal money must teach about the Constitution on Sept. 17 (the date the document was adopted, in 1787), or the closest school day available. Needless to say, the edict has brought some whimpering. Dan Fuller, director of federal programs for the National School Boards Association, told the Associated Press last year that such dictates interrupt regular lessons on other subjects. (Gaia worship, perhaps? "Recycling IV"? "Multicultural Sensitivity"?) "We dont need the federal micromanagement," ...

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACYRemarks by U.S. Representative Bob Barr (GA-7)The Conservative Political Action ConferenceSaturday, January 23, 1999 The sound of your freedom disappearing. Hear it? It may be silent. There's no great roar. But it's disappearing, and fast. As we gather today, there is an insidious conspiracy underway just across the Potomac River in our nation's capital. This is not a conspiracy that meets in dark rooms in the dead of night. The co-conspirators don't identify themselves with a secret handshake and a code word. And, therein lies their greatest danger. The conspiracy I'll be discussing today meets in a much different environment. They gather on weekdays -- with ...

At a Friday press conference, an animated President Bush tells reporters that the U.S. program to interrogate terrorist suspects will not continue unless Congress creates new legal definitions for Common Article ...
