PHILADELPHIA -- A Philadelphia family said they are outraged over the arrest of one of their family members. The family of Neftaly Cruz said police had no right to come onto their property and arrest their 21-year-old son simply because he was using his cell phone's camera. They told their story to Harry Hairston and the NBC 10 Investigators. "I was humiliated. I was embarrassed, you know," Cruz said. Cruz, 21, told the NBC 10 Investigators that police arrested him last Wednesday for taking a picture of police activity with his cell phone. Police at the 35th district said they were in Cruz's neighborhood that night arresting a drug dealer. Cruz said that when he heard a ...

Founded on March 16, 2002, LEAP is made up of current and former members of the law enforcement and criminal justice communities who are speaking out about the failures of our existing drug policies. Those policies have failed, and continue to fail, to effectively address the problems of drug abuse, especially the problems of juvenile drug use, the problems of addiction, and the problems of crime caused by the existence of a criminal black market in drugs. Although those who speak publicly for LEAP are people from the law enforcement and criminal justice communities, a large number of our supporting members do not have such experience. You don't have to have law enforcement experience to ...

Lou Dobbs took a critical look at President Bush's use of signing statements. An American Bar Association task force has determined that the president's use of signing statements are a violation of the Constitution. Signing statements are similar to a line-item veto which the Supreme Court said was unconstitutional. Dobbs quotes the ABA, "This is an outrage being perpetrated against the Constitution of the United States."

WHO OWNS YOUR CHILD? PART 1 of 2 Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, DO July 25, 2006 http://NewsWithViews.com This case should send a deep chill through the heart of every parent. After he had endured three months of ineffective treatments last year for Hodgkins lymphoma, Abraham Cherrix rejected his doctors recommendation to go through a second round of chemotherapy. He chose instead to seek out more natural, nontoxic methods using alternative medicine. After doing his research, he traveled with his father to Bio-Medical Center in Tijuana, Mexico. His treatments included liquid herbal supplements and a sugar-free, organic diet consisting mostly of fresh fruits and vegetables. When they ...

First published: Friday, July 7, 2006 In the winter of 1933, before Franklin Roosevelt's first inauguration on March 4, there was a clamor in the United States for a military dictatorship. The banks were closing, a quarter of Americans were unemployed, rebellion threatened on the farms. Only drastic reforms, mandated by the president's power as commander in chief, would save the country. Something like the fascism of Mussolini's Italy, viewed benignly by many Americans in those days because it worked, or so everyone said, would save the country from communist revolution. As Jonathan Alter reminds us in "The Defining Moment," his brilliant book about FDR's first hundred days, men ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush's penchant for writing exceptions to laws he has just signed violates the Constitution, an American Bar Association task force says in a report highly critical of the practice. The ABA group, which includes a one-time FBI director and former federal appeals court judge, said the president has overstepped his authority in attaching challenges to hundreds of new laws. The attachments, known as bill-signing statements, say Bush reserves a right to revise, interpret or disregard measures on national security and constitutional grounds. "This report raises serious concerns crucial to the survival of our democracy," said the ABA's president, Michael ...

The Government's Sick War on Marijuana Post Date: 2006-07-22 23:15:48 by IndieTX

Excuse me for a moment while I vent about the mind-boggling stupidity of the autocratic, bureaucratic, right-wing, Neanderthal numskulls who keep pushing an insane, inane, and inhumane holy war against marijuana which is, after all, a weed. The most embarrassing thing for these holy warriors is that the weed is winning! They've been at this war since 1937, spending billions and billions of our tax dollars, militarizing our borders, and stomping on our Bill of Rights. They've used phone taps, garbage searches, jackbooted raids, and draconian prison terms to ... well, to do what? To nab peaceful, mellow tokers who aren't bothering anyone, that's what. Despite 60 years of spending our ...

July 22/23, 2006 -- This past Thursday, two audience members at the NAACP convention were arrested briefly by the Secret Service for responding to George W. Bush's call for curing diseases. They yelled, "How about curing a disease called Dick Cheney!" The Secret Service removed the protestors from the DC Convention Center and held them for about 15 minutes. One of the questions that Secret Service asked them was, "What's your problem with Bush?" It would take this editor much longer than 15 minutes to explain to the Secret Service what is wrong with Bush.

July 22/23, 2006 -- Yesterday, the Washington Post's Dana Priest (about the only reporter there who still does actual investigative journalism) had a story about a CIA contractor for BAE Systems who was fired after posting an entry on the intelligence community's internal classified intranet, Intelink, which questioned the U.S. torture practices known as waterboarding and secret detentions. Using the screen name "Covert Communications," CIA computer software contractor Christine Axsmith has now been threatened with criminal prosecution for writing that CIA transcripts she read of prisoner interrogations indicated that the torture and detention practices had done nothing to prevent ...

Bushs Signing Statements Are a Real Danger By Bob Barr, Special to Roll Call Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 9:00 AM Late in June, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Pennsylvanias Arlen Specter (R), presided over a hearing about presidential signing statements. This might seem an obscure issue, of little importance in Americans daily lives. However, presidential signing statements go to the very heart of our countrys system of checks and balances. Throughout history, signing statements have been used to thank supporters, provide reasons for signing a bill or express satisfaction or displeasure with legislation passed by Congress. More recently, Presidents ...

On June 23, the New York Times and other papers revealed that the Bush administration has been vacuuming up records passing through a Belgian hub for international banking. According to Treasury Undersecretary Stuart Levey, the United States government may have conducted hundreds of thousands of warrantless searches of personal financial data. Some government lawyers doubt the legality of the program, and administration officials told the Los Angeles Times that it had only been marginally successful at going after al-Qaeda. No matter. The exposé set off perhaps the biggest boom in conservative press-bashing since Watergate. The White House quickly ...

A federal Department of Homeland Security agent passed along information about student protests against military recruiters at UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz, landing the demonstrations on a database tracking foreign terrorism, according to government documents released Tuesday. The documents were released by the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed a Freedom of Information Act request on behalf of student groups that protested against recruiters who visited their campuses in April 2005. The students were angry when they turned up in the database of a Pentagon program called Threat and Local Observation Notice, or TALON, which the government started in 2003 as a way to collect data ...

Former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr filed a lawsuit against New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday, claiming Bloomberg's attempt to crack down on gun dealers was "careless, willful and clearly illegal." The lawsuit, filed in Cobb County Superior Court, is in response to a federal lawsuit filed by Bloomberg in May alleging that 15 firearm brokers in five states, including Georgia, were "rogue gun dealers." Bloomberg's chief spokesman, Stu Loeser, dismissed the suit as a "public relations stunt." Bloomberg recently went to Georgia and discussed gun control with the mayor of Atlanta, who is part of his coalition of mayors against gun violence. Barr said his ...

Gag Order By Lawrence Siskind For forty years, the United States has lived with a variety of government programs applying preferential treatment based on race or gender or both. These programs have generally been limited to education and public contracting. Recently, in a 2-1 decision, a panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a decision which may provide a foundation for applying preferential treatment to freedom of speech. If allowed to stand, the decision could authorize local governments to set varying limits to free expression, depending on the race, religion, or sexual orientation of the listener. Preferential treatment has proved one of the most divisive policies ...
