Is Teacher-Student Sex OK If The Student Is 18? Sunday, June 18, 2006 By Susan Estrich LOS ANGELES Should it be a crime for a public school teacher to have sex with one of her students? Is that a hard question? For me it isn't. The answer is yes. It's a particularly easy question where the state, in this case Texas, has passed a simple and straightforward law that makes it a crime, without regard to the age or gender of the student. But don't tell that to some of my friends on the panel last night of Fox's "On the Record," where I was all alone with host Greta van Susteren in being willing to enforce the law against a 25- year old former beauty contest participant who ...

Guantanamo detainees unaware of defense lawyers BY CAROL ROSENBERG Knight Ridder Newspapers MIAMI - The Yemeni captive who killed himself at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, had an attorney arranging to visit him in August, but did not know it when he committed suicide. One of the Saudis, Mani Shaman al Utaybi, 30, had been approved for transfer to a jail back home, but also had never been told he was cleared to depart the U.S. detention center. As the Pentagon was silent Thursday on the repatriation of the bodies of the three men from the island prison, their lawyers questioned whether their isolation and lack of knowledge about their status contributed to their deaths. The three men hanged ...

GOVERNMENT ORDERS SPY BLIMP Friday, June 16, 2006 - http://FreeMarketNews.com The government has hired defense subcontractor Lockheed Martin to design and develop an enormous blimp that will be used to spy on Americans, according to the Athens News. Government agencies such as the NSA are anticipating that as early as 2009 the blimp will be operational and begin supporting new ways of monitoring everything that happens in the country. A prototype of the blimp is already being developed at a cost of $40 million. The spy ship, called the High Altitude Airship, will be seventeen times larger than the Goodyear Blimp and hover 12 miles above the ground. Although it is very large it will be ...

[Excerpted] For years, all the intelligence agencies have been tussling with the American Civil Liberties Union over documents about the innovative Bush administration policy of locking people up in foreign countries where they can be tortured without the inconvenience of anyone knowing about it or bringing up, you know, like, the Constitution. It is not yet clear -- though there is little reason for optimism -- whether the courts will let them get away with it, but the official position of the executive branch under President Bush is that the U.S. government can lock you up anywhere in the world, torture you and tell no one about it. And if someone does find out and starts talking trash ...

"The demands that I tell police what weapons I had was designed to force me to produce weapons and be shot down at once as a crazed writer in a battle with police." For more than five years, I have been battling to stay alive in the State in which I live. My adversary has not been the mafia, but the Commonwealth of Virginia. The occasion was my publishing the American-Christian Messenger, founded in 1972, in the summer of '72 issue, titled the Red State of Virginia. I revealed for the first time that the famed Byrd machine, which maintained iron control over the people of Virginia for many years, was actually the Rothschild-Byrd Machine. In December, 1893, Tom Martin, a railroad ...

Shirlington Had Inside Line on DHS Contract? By Paul Kiel - June 15, 2006, 1:31 PM Justin just called in with another dispatch from today's hearing on the Department of Homeland Security's contract with Shirlington Limousine. Tell me if this sounds fishy to you. As revealed in today's hearing, Shirlington President Christopher Baker told committee staff that he'd originally submitted a proposal to DHS in January of 2004 to provide shuttle services. Here's why that's fishy - that was 3 months before DHS even announced that they'd be seeking bids for such a contract. But it gets better. In March of 2004, Baker applied for HUBZone status for Shirlington - that's a federal program whereby ...

Records reveal Hastert's hand in land deal $3 million gain for 3 partners in 3 years By Mike Dorning and Andrew Zajac Washington Bureau June 15, 2006 WASHINGTON -- Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert and two partners turned a profit of more than $3 million on property they accumulated and sold in just over three years near the route of a proposed controversial freeway on the western fringe of suburban Chicago, according to land records and financial disclosure reports released Wednesday. Hastert spokesman Ron Bonjean rejected the notion that the land, located 5 1/2 miles from the proposed Prairie Parkway route, rose in value because of the highway project. The speaker long has ...

Chi Trib: Hastert Pocketed $1.5 Mil on Real Estate Deal By Paul Kiel - June 15, 2006, 4:44 PM The Chicago Tribune puts a number on Speaker Dennis Hastert's (R-IL) killing on that real estate deal: $1.5 million. And here are the basics, first reported by the Sunlight Foundation yesterday. Hastert acquired the first part of the land in August, 2002, a 69 acre portion of a 196-acre farm purchased under his wife's name. The rest was acquired by a land trust in Feburary, 2004 of which Hastert had a quarter interest - the two partners were Dallas Ingemunson ("a long-time supporter and political mentor to Hastert who is chairman of the Kendall County Republican Party") and Thomas ...

Internet Phone Wiretaps Draw Fire Post Date: 2006-06-15 14:52:18 by Neil McIver

A court ruling that gives authorities the ability to listen to Internet conversations has drawn fire from a group of technology heavyweights, who are arguing that enabling VoIP wiretaps not only poses risks to Internet security but also represents an invasion of privacy and will thwart innovation. A report issued Tuesday by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) contends that VoIP wiretaps would require either reworking the Internet to enable accurate call intercepts or would introduce dangerous network security risks by adding a layer of technology that would create the ability to eavesdrop on other network services. Building Wiretaps ITAA's study, coauthored by ...

(06-15) 08:23 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that police armed with a warrant can barge into homes and seize evidence even if they don't knock, a huge government victory that was decided by President Bush's new justices. The 5-4 ruling signals the court's conservative shift following the departure of moderate Sandra Day O'Connor. The case tested previous court rulings that police armed with warrants generally must knock and announce themselves or they run afoul of the Constitution's Fourth Amendment ban on unreasonable searches. Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for the majority, said Detroit police acknowledge violating that rule when they called out their ...

Judge Rules That U.S. Has Broad Powers to Detain Noncitizens Indefinitely By NINA BERNSTEIN Published: June 15, 2006 A federal judge in Brooklyn ruled yesterday that the government has wide latitude under immigration law to detain noncitizens on the basis of religion, race or national origin, and to hold them indefinitely without explanation. The ruling came in a class-action lawsuit by Muslim immigrants detained after 9/11, and it dismissed several key claims the detainees had made against the government. But the judge, John Gleeson of United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, allowed the lawsuit to continue on other claims, mostly that the conditions of ...

A recent Washington Post article claims More than 500 children die annually from accidental gunshots: Some shoot themselves, while others kill friends or siblings, often after discovering a gun.[1] To understand how a biased or under-educated writer makes an inaccurate and misleading error, we must first clarify the term child. Oxford English Dictionary defines the word childhood as: The state or stage of life as a child
the time from birth to puberty.[2] Oxford defines puberty as: The period during which adolescents reach sexual maturity and become capable of reproduction, distinguished by the appearance of secondary ...

"Flag Day" Today is Flag Day. I know this because its on the calendar. I know this because I see a few flags flying from various homes. I know it is Flag Day because I saw a sign in the window saying Happy Flag Day. What is the point of Flag Day? What is it that makes this day, any more special or auspicious than any other day? What is it that we celebrate? Do we celebrate the fact that we actually have a flag? Do we celebrate the fact that it has three colors? Do we celebrate the fact that there are 50 stars, and 13 stripes on it? Do we celebrate the fact that our nation has been in existence for more than 229 years? Really, what are we celebrating on Flag ...

How To Deal With Police Officers - Magic Words? Post Date: 2006-06-14 10:20:16 by christine

When dealing with the police, keep your hands in view and don't make sudden movements. Avoid passing behind them. Nervous cops are dangerous cops. Also, never touch the police or their equipment (vehicles, flashlights, animals, etc.) - you can get beat up and charged with assault. The police do not decide your charges; they can only make recommendations. The prosecutor is the only person who can actually charge you. Remember this the next time the cops start rattling off all the charges they're supposedly "going to give you." Questioning Interrogation isn't always bright lights and rubber hoses - usually it's just a conversation. Whenever the cops ask you anything besides your ...
PEACE OFFICERS OR SANCTIONED THUGS? Post Date: 2006-06-14 09:41:41 by christine

In August 1992, Americans watched the siege at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, happen. Television sets all over America provided minute by minute coverage of the killing of Vicki Weaver as she stood in the doorway of the family home holding her infant daughter, and Sammy Weaver, shot in the back after agents shot and killed his beloved dog. What was this familys sin? Their religious worldview did not conform to that sanctioned by the GHW Bush Administration. A short eight months later, America was again subjected to minute by minute coverage of the killing of Branch Davidians in their compound in Waco, Texas. People watched as the compound was besieged and set ablaze by government forces under ...

A civil rights watchdog agency opened an investigation on Monday into a Philadelphia cheese steak restaurant that posted a sign saying "This is America - when ordering, speak English." The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations complaint effectively opens a case against Geno's Steaks of South Philadelphia, said Rachel Lawton, acting executive director of the agency. The Philadelphia controversy has fed a national debate over immigration in which the U.S. Senate passed a bill that would declare English the national language and politicians have raised objections to a Spanish version of the national anthem. The sign may violate the city's Fair Practices Ordinance, which bans ...

Originally published June 12, 2006 The National Security Agency's surveillance program faces its first major court test today before a veteran federal judge in Detroit. In January, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Michigan branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and several individuals, who said they feared the government was spying on them, filed a 60-page lawsuit seeking to have the warrantless wiretapping program declared unconstitutional. The NSA launched the program after the Sept. 11 attacks. It permits the agency to listen in on phone calls and obtain e-mails if one party is outside the U.S. The program also allows the agency to conduct these actions without ...

CAIRO (AP) Al-Qaeda in Iraq said in a Web statement posted Monday that a militant named Abu Hamza al-Muhajer was the group's new leader. Al-Muhajer succeeds Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed Wednesday by a U.S. airstrike on his hideout northeast of Baghdad, Iraq. The name al-Muhajer, Arabic for "immigrant," suggested he was not Iraqi. "Al-Qaeda in Iraq's council has agreed on Sheik Abu Hamza al-Muhajer to be the successor for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in the leadership of the organization," said a statement signed by the group on an Islamic militant Web forum where it often posts messages. It said al-Muhajer was "a beloved brother with jihadi (holy war) ...
