ANOTHER AMERICAN GULAG ACCOUNT

I received this in an E-mail; the account is incredibly disturbing. Reporter Susan Lindauer has been moved from Carswell Federal Prison Mental Hospital to a holding facility in Oklahoma City. I had been organizing patriots in the Austin area to demonstrate for her release, and found out a few days ago she was just moved to O.C. For those unaware of the violations of First Amendment and basic human rights that this activist/dissident/journalist has suffered, you may read about her by googling her. http://www.seattleweekly.com/news/0607/lindauer.php In a nutshell, after a period of activism in terms of the Iraqi war, and after putting out information contrary to the official story ...

April 23, 2006 -- Former National Security Agency (NSA) signals intelligence analyst Kenneth Ford Jr., whose May 2003 analysis of Iraqi communications concluded that the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was not proven and was subsequently set up by the NSA, the FBI, and Justice Department in a crafty operation that saw a classified document placed within his home by an FBI contractor, has been ordered to report to the high security Federal Prison in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania on May 15. Ford was convicted by a tainted jury, acting under the influence of a judge who was "shopped for" by a Federal prosecutor who was carrying out a political ...

April 23, 2006 We Americans came not from a revolution but from an evolution. That is in large part why our so-called revolution produced success while most throughout history did not. We came as much from the Magna Carta as from our own doings, as much from British common law and parliamentary development as from the Declaration of Independence and Continental Congress. Unlike the true revolution on the other side of the Atlantic that led to Napoleon's dictatorship and strife and conflict all across Europe, our evolution founded the greatest country the world has ever seen. That was true in every element of power and in the uniqueness that makes us great, our constant striving ...

4/22/2006 Tennessee Supreme Court Overturns ID Roadblocks Tennessee Supreme Court Finds An ID Roadblock Illegal Because It Was Used To Issue Traffic Tickets In The Name of Safety. On Thursday, the Tennessee Supreme Court unanimously found the use of roadblocks to check identification papers, driving licenses and automobile registrations to be unconstitutional. The court struck down a Chattanooga Housing Authority (CHA) "residency" checkpoint at Poss Homes on 2409 Washington Street. The authority, which has its own police force, claimed the stops would protect residents from crime and illicit drug use by turning away non-residents. CHA Police Officer Ralph Brown had stopped ...

Bill Would Make Sale of Sex Toys Illegal In South Carolina By SEANNA ADCOX The Associated Press April 21, 2006 COLUMBIA — Lucy’s Love Shop employee Wanda Gillespie said she was flabbergasted that South Carolina’s Legislature is considering outlawing sex toys. But banning the sale of sex toys is actually quite common in some Southern states. The South Carolina bill, proposed by Republican Rep. Ralph Davenport, would make it a felony to sell devices used primarily for sexual stimulation and allow law enforcement to seize sex toys from raided businesses. "That would be the most terrible thing in the world," said Ms. Gillespie, an employee the Anderson shop. ...

The Firing of Mary McCarthy

The case against the CIA Intelligence Officer, Mary McCarthy, fired for her alleged role in leaking information about secret prisons to the Washington Post's Dana Priest smells a little fishy. Let me state at the outset that the officer in question, Mary McCarthy, is an old acquaintance. I hasten to add that I do not consider her a friend. She was my immediate boss in 1988-89 and was instrumental in my decision to leave the CIA and take a job at the State Department's Office of Counter Terrorism. Mary, in my experience, was a terrible manager. I left the CIA in 1989 despite having received two exceptional performance awards during my last eight months on the job because I could not stand ...

The US federal sources confirmed the incident to CNN. Deputy Commissioner (North) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Obaidul Haque said he knows about such an incident and an abduction case filed in that connection but he does not know whether the 'abducted person' was deported to the US. When The Daily Star asked the DC whether ...

Purge at the CIA: America's Gulag

Often small things provide the most disturbing evidence for world-changing events, as when naturalists observe the quiet disappearance of some little known species. The CIA's firing of senior officer Mary O. McCarthy is a political event of just this nature. Ordinarily, the firing of some middling CIA officer is not an event to interest many other than John Le Carre fans and those who linger over cappuccino at the CIA's Langely cafeteria. Not just conservative throw-backs recognize the need for secrecy in many intelligence matters. Ordinarily, the fact that some CIA agent has broken his or her oath of secrecy would not cause much disturbance outside the unhinged James Angleton types who ...

CIA Officer Fired for Leaking Classified Info to Media

WASHINGTON — A CIA officer has been relieved of his duty after being caught leaking classified information to the media. Citing the Privacy Act, the CIA would not provide any details about the officer's identity or assignments. It was not immediately clear if the person would face prosecution. The firing is a highly unusual move, although there has been an ongoing investigation into leaks in the CIA. "The officer has acknowledged unauthorized discussions with the media and the unauthorized sharing of classified information," said CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano. "That is a violation of the secrecy agreement that everyone signs as a condition of employment with the ...

U.S. Attorney General Calls For 'Reasonable' ISP Data Retention

Published: April 20, 2006 ALEXANDRIA, Va.--The failure of some Internet service providers to retain user logs for a "reasonable amount of time" is hampering investigations into gruesome online sex crimes, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Thursday, indicating that new data retention rules may be on the way. "The investigation and prosecution of child predators depends critically on the availability of evidence that is often in the hands of Internet service providers," Gonzales said in a morning speech to staff at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children headquarters here. "Record retention by Internet service providers (that is) consistent ...

10 minutes ago An Iraqi actor who plays a hijacker in a new film about the September 11 attacks on the United States complained on Friday he had been denied entry into the country for the movie's premiere. But the U.S. embassy in London said Lewis Alsamari, who has lived in Britain since 1995, had not given sufficient notice about his planned trip. A spokeswoman said officials at the embassy would try their best to get Alsamari to New York on time but could give no guarantees. Alsamari stars in "United 93," a film about the hijacked plane that crashed in Pennsylvania which has sparked intense debate about whether Americans are ready to see an on-screen portrayal of the ...

Property Tax Dispute Threatens Band of Polygamists

HILDALE, Utah, April 19 — Thousands of polygamists are engaged in a highly unusual standoff here over property taxes that could ultimately cost them their houses or thrust them into a mainstream America they fear and despise. In one corner is a group of 8,000 or so adherents of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, an offshoot of the Mormon Church that had long paid the property taxes of its members, sometimes even rolling a wheelbarrow through meetings to collect the needed cash. At the other corner is a stocky accountant from Salt Lake City, Bruce R. Wisan, who says he is determined to help the church members even if they do not want it. The church ...

Federal judge says Air Force ignored records law (FOIA)

6:54 a.m. April 20, 2006 WASHINGTON – The U.S. Air Force engaged in a pattern of ignoring requests for the release of classified documents dating to the Vietnam War, establishing a response rate that is worse than the CIA's, a federal judge has ruled. U.S. District Judge Rosemary M. Collyer ruled Wednesday in favor of the Washington-based National Security Archive, the largest non-governmental library of declassified documents, in significant parts of a lawsuit the group filed against the Air Force in 2005. Collyer found that the Air Force had no defense – or essentially conceded – that it had failed to respond to requests under the Freedom of Information Act for up to 18 ...

When Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld appeared on Rush Limbaugh's talk radio show on Monday, his remarks defending himself from calls for his resignation drew wide attention. Generally overlooked were a couple of questions and answers on the subject of press coverage in Iraq. For one thing, Rumsfeld said it was important to "recognize that the terrorists, Zarqawi and bin Laden and Zawahiri, those people have media committees. They are actively out there trying to manipulate the press in the United States. They are very good at it. They're much better at (laughing) managing those kinds of things than we are." Asked why fewer reporters were embedding in Iraq, Rumsfeld said ...

Published: Thursday April 20, 2006 Five major civil rights organizations and six business leaders announced their support for a suit filed against President Bush to stop the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretap program today, RAW STORY has learned. Last year, it became known that the NSA has been intercepting the phone and e-mail communications of Americans without first obtaining judicial approval. Many believe this to be in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The American Civil Liberties Union also believes the program violates consitutional free speech and privacy rights. The group has filed suit in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of ...

April 19, 2006 -- Bush administration wants to confiscate Jack Anderson's papers. In one of the most dramatic examples of the fascism of the Bush regime, Scott Shane is reporting in today's New York Times that the FBI is seeking access to the papers of the late investigative journalist Jack Anderson. Over his long career Anderson amassed some 200 boxes of papers. The FBI believes that among Anderson' papers are classified documents leaked to the journalist by government sources over his long career. The Bush regime's draconian desire to confiscate Anderson's papers comes after it began reclassifying documents held by the National Archives and Records Administration. Some of the affected ...

The Law That Never Was -- The Fraud of Income & Social Security The Premise The authority of the federal government to collect its income tax depends upon the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the federal income tax amendment, which was allegedly ratified in 1913. After a year of extensive research, Bill Benson discovered that the 16th Amendment was not ratified by the required 3/4 of the states, but nevertheless Secretary of State Philander Knox fraudulently announced ratification. Watch the Benson Video Text of the 16th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America: "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever ...

How Big Is Bush's Big Government?

When teaching economics I sometimes find it beneficial to use government budget data to apply the lessons of economics to our current political circumstances. The students tend to be surprised at the size of our government, the amount of tax revenues that we "pay," and the amount of government debt. The following numbers get the point across. We, in the United States, live under the rule of the largest civil government, measured in budgetary terms, in history. Federal spending alone in fiscal year 2006 is expected to be over $2.7 trillion, which means the federal government spends $7.4 billion a day or $5.1 million in every minute of the year. This is 815 times the level of ...

The Associated Press Wednesday, April 19, 2006; 4:14 AM TORONTO -- Akhil Sachdeva, an accountant from India who emigrated to Canada, still wonders why he was seized at gunpoint by U.S. agents and held for months with hundreds of foreigners following the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Chaining him to a bench at the FBI's Manhattan office on Dec. 20, 2001, federal agents demanded to know his religious and political beliefs, asked whether he had taken flying lessons and sought his personal views about the suicide hijackers, he said in an interview with The Associated Press. The 33-year-old is among eight foreign detainees who have sued U.S. officials, contending they were mistreated and ...

Waco and the Bipartisan Police State

Every year around this time, I find it worthwhile to reflect on the siege at Mt. Carmel, just outside of Waco, Texas, which began on February 28, 1993, when an ATF publicity stunt went awry, and ended 51 days later on April 19 with about 80 civilians killed. Waco is still important, because it illustrates the violent nature of the state, the fact that political power flows from the barrel of a gun, and the scary truth that the U.S. government is ultimately no different from all others in this respect. Many people, including many libertarians, would just as soon forget the debacle. But we must remember. Thirteen years ago the federal government of the United States ended its altercation ...

Kirsch: Cheney Tax Return Shows Katrina Tax Benefits for Non-Katrina Charitable Contributions Michael Kirsch (Notre Dame) points out an interesting aspect of the Vice-President's 2005 tax return: It appears that the VP is a major beneficiary of the Hurricane Katrina tax relief act. In particular, he claimed $6.8 million of charitable deductions, which is 77% of his AGI -- well in excess of the 50% limitation that would have applied absent the Katrina legislation. The press release indicates that the charitable contribution reflects the amount of net proceeds from an independent administrator's exercise of the VP's Halliburton options -- apparently, the VP had agreed back in 2001 that he ...
