Vivid 9/11 memory emboldens U.S. attorney The Buffalo News By Dan Herbeck April 2, 2006 In his 17-year legal career, Terrance P. Flynn has never prosecuted a criminal or completed a trial in federal court. But the Bush administration has put him in one of the region's most important law enforcement jobs, as the U.S. attorney for Western New York. Flynn, 42, acknowledges that politics played at least some role in his appointment. He is a longtime friend and supporter of Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds, R-Clarence. Flynn's brother, William, is chairman of the state Public Service Commission. But Flynn is also proud of his own legal abilities and work ethic. He believes he can handle the task of ...

Silence in classUniversity professors denounced for anti-Americanism; schoolteachers suspended for their politics; students encouraged to report on their tutors. Are US campuses in the grip of a witch-hunt of progressives, or is academic life just too liberal? By Gary YoungeGary YoungeTuesday April 4, 2006GuardianAfter the screenwriter Walter Bernstein was placed on the blacklist during the McCarthyite era he said his life "seemed to move in ever-decreasing circles". "Few of my friends dropped away but the list of acquaintances diminished," he wrote in Inside Out, a memoir of the blacklist. "I appeared contaminated and they did not want to risk infection. The Immigration Question

The recent immigration protests in Los Angeles have brought the issue to the forefront, provoking strong reactions from millions of Americans. The protesters’ cause of open borders is not well served when they drape themselves in Mexican flags and chant slogans in Spanish. If anything, their protests underscore the Balkanization of America caused by widespread illegal immigration. How much longer can we maintain huge unassimilated subgroups within America, filled with millions of people who don’t speak English or participate fully in American life? Americans finally have decided the status quo is unacceptable, and immigration may be the issue that decides the 2008 presidential ...

"Well if the GOP (assuming you are speaking on their behalf) think that desiring equal treatment under the law for our politicos is a "psycho - rant", then perhaps you can expect to LOOSE the next election. A GREAT MANY voted for Bush hoping that he'd clean up the government, but if that isn't going to happen, then what's the difference between having a democRAT in office and a republican ... if both are going to ignore the law? Frankly, I'd rather have the opponent in office whose motive I understand (the DNC) then a group whose motives I don't. Perhaps it is time to send a message to the GOP." 156 posted on 02/05/2002 10:44:38 AM PST by BeAChooser

Supreme Court Rejects Jose Padilla Case

Writer1 hour, 12 minutes ago A divided Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from Jose Padilla, held as an enemy combatant without traditional legal rights for more than three years, sidestepping a challenge to Bush administration wartime detention powers. Padilla was moved in January to Miami to face criminal charges, and the government argued that the appeal over his indefinite detention was now pointless. Three justices said the court should have agreed to take up the case anyway: Justices David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer. And three other court members, including Chief Justice John Roberts, said that they would be watching to ensure Padilla receives the ...

The Associated Press WASHINGTON - A divided Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from a man held until recently as an enemy combatant without traditional legal rights, in effect sidestepping a challenge to Bush administration wartime detention powers. Jose Padilla was moved in January to Miami to face criminal charges, and the government argued that the appeal over his indefinite detention was now pointless. Three justices said the court should have agreed to take up the case anyway: Justices David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer. An appeals court panel had all but called for the court to deal with the case, saying it was troubled by the Bush administration's ...

H istory repeats itself, but always with new twists. We are back to the good old days when a Declaration of War preceded the start of a war. Such declaration occurred on March 16th, 2006. Reversing the old order, we are now in the "Sitzkrieg", to be followed shortly by an aerial "Blitzkrieg" in the coming days. In the old days, Congress declared war, and directed the Executive to take action. In the new millenium, the Executive declared war last March 16th, then Congress will pass H.R. 282, "To hold the current regime in Iran accountable for its threatening behavior and to support a transition to democracy in Iran." This bill and previous ones like it are in ...

It's war. It's a 'Continuity Presidency'Exclusive The US Department of Justice (DoJ) and the office of the White House Counsel are preparing a draft document laying out the President's wartime authority to remain in office past 2008, The Register has learned. The scheme is described as an emergency "continuity presidency," made necessary by the extraordinary circumstances and unique challenges of protecting the United States from the threat of international terrorism. "The world changed on 9/11," a confidential DoJ memo obtained by The Register explains, "and no Administration in US history is better suited to adapt productively to those changes than this one. ...

M E M O R A N D U M TO: Chairman Henry Hyde FROM: Dana Rohrabacher DATE: March 30, 2006 RE: Oklahoma City Bombing Hearing After a twelve-month personal inquiry into the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, I have concluded that there is ample evidence to justify an investigative hearing into this historic crime. The title of the proposed hearing: Was There a Foreign Connection to the Okalahoma City Bombing? The official position today, defended by the FBI and Justice Department, is that the OKC bombing, which left 168 persons dead, was planned and executed solely by two disgruntled veterans, Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols, with the limited ...

There is much debate these days about the inherent powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief. This is the chief, and fallback, justification given by this Administration and its supporters for the continued warrant-less surveillance in contravention of the FISA Act. Today, in an extraordinary statement during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on censure of the President, Senator Orrin Hatch stated that no law passed by Congress, e.g. the FISA Act, could supersede the inherent Commander-in-Chief powers of the President. This is, to say the least, a Constitutional leap of faith. There is no passage in the Constitution that suggests that some inherent power, not explicitly granted ...

Mexicans: Southwest U.S. is ours Mexico reconquering U.S. southwest New Zogby Poll: Mexicans Say Southwest U.S. Belongs to Them; Shouldn't Need Permission to Enter U.S. WASHINGTON, June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans and Mexicans have widely divergent views of border issues, according to a new poll by Zogby International. Zogby found that a large majority of the Mexican population believes the southwest territory of the U.S. rightfully belongs to Mexico, and that Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without first obtaining U.S. permission. By contrast, Zogby's survey of Americans conducted within a few days of the Mexican poll shows a large majority supports reducing ...

PHILADELPHIA - The Justice Department is demanding internal files from dozens of Internet service providers and other technology firms as it seeks to defend a controversial Internet child protection law. The subpoenas are similar to one given to Google Inc., which waged a partially successful battle over the government's request for millions of pieces of information about search engine requests and Web site domains. InformationWeek magazine unearthed subpoenas that show the government also demanded information from at least 34 other companies, including Internet service providers such as Comcast Corp. and EarthLink Inc., security software firms and other technology companies. Photographer: Herald got it right By Marie Szaniszlo Thursday, March 30, 2006 - Updated: 09:39 AM EST Amid a growing national controversy about the gesture U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia made Sunday at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the freelance photographer who captured the moment has come forward with the picture. “It’s inaccurate and deceptive of him to say there was no vulgarity in the moment,” said Peter Smith, the Boston University assistant photojournalism professor who made the shot. Despite Scalia’s insistence that the Sicilian gesture was not offensive and had been incorrectly characterized by the Herald as obscene, the photographer said the ...

We are forewarned. A reading of history -- it is all in mainstream historical accounts -- tells us that we are about to lose the most precious thing we have -- our individual freedoms."

80 Eyes on 2,400 People If terrorists come to tiny Dillingham, Alaska, security cameras will be ready. But privacy concerns have residents up in arms. By Tomas Alex Tizon, Times Staff Writer March 28, 2006 DILLINGHAM, Alaska — From Anchorage it takes 90 minutes on a propeller plane to reach this fishing village on the state's southwestern edge, a place where some people still make raincoats out of walrus intestine. This is the Alaskan bush at its most remote. Here, tundra meets sea, and sea turns to ice for half the year. Scattered, almost hidden, in the terrain are some of the most isolated communities on American soil. People choose to live in outposts like Dillingham (pop. 2,40 ...

Pillaging The Treasury And The Constitution Bush Is No Conservative

3-29-6 President Bush passes himself off as a conservative Republican and a born-again Christian. These are disguises behind which Bush hides. Would a Christian invade another country on false pretenses, kill tens of thousands of innocent civilians, and show no remorse or inclination to cease the aggression? Long-time Republican policy-wonk Bruce Bartlett recently published a book, Impostor, in which he proves that President Bush is no economic conservative, having broken all records in spending taxpayers' money and running up public debt. Were Bush merely another big spender, his presidency wouldn't differ from other pork barrel administrations, but Bush's radicalism goes far ...
