11 indicted; 556 guns seized By Mark Harrison The Times-Journal Published February 02, 2006 A two-year undercover investigation into gun sales at north Alabama flea markets – including Collinsville Trade Day – resulted in charges against 11 people and the seizure of 556 weapons, authorities said Wednesday. U.S. Attorney Alice Martin said the suspects were accused of running businesses that sold weapons without the proper license. Hobbyists can legally sell guns without a license, she said, but the 11 were making sales too frequently to be legal. “These people who are operating every Saturday and Sunday and are selling hundreds of guns have gone beyond hobby,” said ...

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A judge ruled Thursday that offering driver's license exams in a dozen languages is not in violation of a 1990 amendment to the state constitution, which declares English the official language of Alabama. Circuit Judge William Shashy said the amendment "makes English Alabama's official language - not its only language." His ruling came in a suit filed against the state by a nonprofit group called "ProEnglish," which says the test should only be administered in English. The group argued that the Alabama Department of Public Safety's practice of allowing tests in multiple languages violated the state constitution and endangers all drivers. ...

Media uncritically cast Bush's defense of spy program as "strong" and "vigorous"Summary: Following President Bush's State of the Union address, various media figures described his defense of domestic eavesdropping as "strong," "vigorous," and "fierce." But they failed to note the numerous inaccuracies Bush employed in justifying the surveillance program, whose legality has been challenged not just by Democrats, but by Republicans and some prominent conservative legal scholars as well. Following President Bush's January 31 State of the Union address, during which he defended the administration's warrantless domestic surveillance program, ...

U.S. Capitol Police took Sheehan away in handcuffs and charged her with unlawful conduct, a misdemeanor, when she showed up to President Bush’s address Tuesday night wearing a shirt that read, “2245 Dead. President Calls For Spending Restraint Human Events By Brian Riedl February 1, 2006 President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address called for restraining federal spending, reforming runaway entitlements, and making permanent the tax cuts that are set to expire in the years ahead. President Bush proposed much less new spending than is typical in a State of the Union address and called for savings of $14 billion next year alone. However, the President declined to reveal his goal for total spending next year, and the tradeoff he envisions between new spending and any savings will not be known until his budget is released next week. As the President said, progress in slowing the ...

(02-01) 08:11 PST WASHINGTON, (AP) -- The Patriot Act is set to be extended for another month while conservative Republicans and the White House work out changes they say would protect people from government intrusion without weakening the war on terror. A day after President Bush insisted that Congress renew 16 provisions set to expire Friday, the House was set to extend the act until March 10 to give negotiators more time to come up with a deal. The Senate was expected to follow before the deadline. "The enemy has not lost the desire or capability to attack us. Fortunately, this nation has superb professionals in law enforcement, intelligence, the military and homeland ...

By Jeff Stein, CQ Staff “Contrary to popular belief, there is no absolute ban on [military] intelligence components collecting U.S. person information,” the U.S.Army’s top intelligence officer said in a 2001 memo that surfaced Tuesday. Not only that, military intelligence agencies are permitted to “receive” domestic intelligence information, even though they cannot legally “collect” it,” according to the Nov. 5, 2001, memo issued by Lt. Gen. Robert W. Noonan Jr., the deputy chief of staff for intelligence. “MI [military intelligence] may receive information from anyone, anytime,” Noonan wrote in the memo, obtained by Secrecy News, a ...

What Really Happened. by CindySheehan Wed Feb 01, 2006 at 01:19:44 AM PDT Dear Friends, As most of you have probably heard, I was arrested before the State of the Union Address tonight. I am speechless with fury at what happened and with grief over what we have lost in our country. There have been lies from the police and distortions by the press. (Shocker) So this is what really happened: This afternoon at the People's State of the Union Address in DC where I was joined by Congresspersons Lynn Woolsey and John Conyers, Ann Wright, Malik Rahim and John Cavanagh, Lynn brought me a ticket to the State of the Union Address. At that time, I was wearing the shirt that said: 2245 Dead. How ...

Federalizing Social Policy

As the Senate prepares to vote on the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito this week, our nation once again finds itself bitterly divided over the issue of abortion. It's a sad spectacle, especially considering that our founders never intended for social policy to be decided at the federal level, and certainly not by federal courts. It's equally sad to consider that huge numbers of Americans believe their freedoms hinge on any one individual, Supreme Court justice or not. Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided, but not because the Supreme Court presumed to legalize abortion rather than ban it. Roe was wrongly decided because abortion simply is not a constitutional issue. There is not ...

January 27, 2006Have You Been Contacted by the BATFE? Congress will do nothing to stop BATFE abuses of gun owners unless Congress hears from us loud and clear. Courts won’t protect our rights until they realize that our rights are being violated. Our publicizing the Glover matter – including the video of the botched BATFE “test” of the alleged “machine gun” – has already sent shockwaves through BATFE. That was just one example. Imagine the effects when we can report dozens, even hundreds of examples of BATFE harassment, hostility, heavy-handedness, and oppressive conduct! As part of our Boot the BATFE campaign, we are asking firearms owners and dealers ...

WASHINGTON — A new provision tucked into the Patriot Act bill now before Congress would allow authorities to haul demonstrators at any "special event of national significance" away to jail on felony charges if they are caught breaching a security perimeter. Sen. Arlen Specter , R-Pa., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sponsored the measure, which would extend the authority of the Secret Service to allow agents to arrest people who willingly or knowingly enter a restricted area at an event, even if the president or other official normally protected by the Secret Service isn't in attendance at the time. The measure has civil libertarians protesting what they ...

An Anonymous Email From An Airline Mechanic For reasons you will understand as you read this I can not divulge my identity. I am an aircraft mechanic for a major airline. I work at one of our maintenance bases located at a large airport. I have discovered some information that I think you will find important. First, I should tell you something about the "pecking order" among mechanics. It is important to my story and to the cause to which you have dedicated yourself. Mechanics want to work on three things. The avionics, the engines, or the flight controls. The mechanics that work on these systems are considered at the top of the "pecking order". Next come the ...

Washington, DC - At today's news conference, President Bush was asked whether his explanation about his domestic spying program was comparable to President Nixon's assertion that, "When the President does it, that means that it is not illegal." This quote from President Nixon in 1977 first resurfaced in a Democratic National Committee web video that was released on January 6, 2006. "Democrats believe that we should spy on terrorists and aggressively fight the War on Terror," said Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Josh Earnest. "We reject President Bush's Nixonian above-the-law mentality." To view the video and hear Nixon's quote, go to: ...

January 28, 2006 Bush Broke the Law by Charley Reese When The New York Times revealed that President George Bush had authorized warrantless surveillance of Americans, the Bush administration reacted in its usual manner: attack and then stage a public-relations campaign. The attack was in the usual jingoistic mode, implying that both the Times and its source, a whistle-blower at the National Security Agency, were providing aid and comfort to the enemy and undermining the war on terror. That's garbage, of course. Any terrorist with more than a two-digit IQ knows that the NSA has the means to intercept any electronic communication. Terrorists don't need to read the Times to figure that ...

January 28, 2006 Bush Presses On in Legal Defense for Wiretapping By ERIC LICHTBLAU and ADAM LIPTAK WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 — President Bush, defending the wiretapping program he ordered soon after the Sept. 11 attacks, declared a few days ago that "there's no doubt in my mind it is legal." So resolute is Mr. Bush, in fact, that he and his senior aides made this assertion, or some variation of it, at least 48 times in the last week. Despite the administration's arguments, many legal scholars — both conservatives and liberals — say they remain skeptical about Mr. Bush's assertion that the Constitution and a September 2001 authorization to use military force provided ...
