Following the recommendations of a presidential commission, the FBI has agreed to allow John Negroponte, the director of national intelligence, help choose the bureau's intelligence chief, The New York Times reported in Sunday editions. The new intelligence chief would be chosen jointly by Negroponte and FBI Director Robert Mueller. The post would carry the tentative title of associate director for intelligence and would be the third-ranking FBI official, the Times said. Citing Bush administration officials, the Times said the move came under pressure from the White House. It would be the first time in FBI history the bureau gave an outsider a large role in selecting a high-level ...

Protest the 'North American Community' -- Call Congress at 1-877-762-8762 By 2010 The US Government Plans To Make America 'One Community' With Canada & Mexico It came on last night's Lou Dobbs Show. The conversation is below. Do you suppose this is the reason why Jorge Boosh won't secure the border, and why he refuses to apprehend and deport illegal aliens? Why he wants illegal aliens to get mortgage loans to buy homes? The French and Dutch voted NO on the EU Constitution, and the British are expected to. People in civilized countries are rejecting one-world government, and Amerians need to as well. Call your Senators and Congressman and tell them you want to be an American, not a ...

WASHINGTON -- The Republican chairman walked off with the gavel, leaving Democrats shouting into turned-off microphones at a raucous hearing Friday on the Patriot Act. The House Judiciary Committee hearing, with the two sides accusing each other of being irresponsible and undemocratic, came as President Bush was urging Congress to renew those sections of the post-Sept. 11 counterterrorism law set to expire in September. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairman of the panel, abruptly gaveled the meeting to an end and walked out, followed by other Republicans. Sensenbrenner declared that much of the testimony, which veered into debate over the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, was irrelevant. ...

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — The chief of Bolivia's armed forces warned Thursday that the military could intervene in a grave political crisis as lawmakers gathered to name a new president. Meanwhile, the near month-long crisis reportedly claimed its first life when a protesting miner was killed in the country's south. Navy Adm. Luis Aranda Granados went on national television to urge the lawmakers to remain within the bounds of the constitution and hear the "will of the people" in their work to choose a new leader. But he rejected an assessment by outgoing President Carlos Mesa that the country was on the brink of a civil war. "It's evident that there does exist a risk of ...

[New and relevant info highlighted] Larry Franklin wanted to sway policy, not just spill intel. The circumstances surrounding the arrest of Pentagon analyst Lawrence A. Franklin for passing classified information to two employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) would make a good thriller. Acted out against a backdrop of war and terrorism, it’s a cloak-and-dagger tale swathed in mystery, pregnant with political implications, and hinting at a subtext of hostility beneath the “special relationship” binding the U.S. to Israel. It has all the elements of good fiction—a strong plot, a fascinating set of characters, and a theme that will have the ...

A majority of small and midsize business owners and managers surveyed in a Crain’s poll support a state constitutional amendment banning racial, gender and ethnic preferences in state government and universities. The findings mirror another poll by John Bailey & Associates, which was commissioned by the Detroit Regional Chamber. Crain’s poll, conducted by EPIC-MRA, had a larger sample size. (See box, Page 88.) Both polls showed 53 percent of respondents would vote “yes” to enact an amendment, an issue expected to be on the state ballot next year. Most respondents in both polls were small and midsize businesses. The findings mean it’ll be tough for the chamber ...

Pot as Medicine: An Odd Decision Can the cultivation and use of marijuana for noncommercial purposes solely within one state be construed as "interstate commerce?" Six members of the U.S. Supreme Court say yes. The other three say -- in effect -- that's nuts. We agree with the dissenters. So it is in the unpredictable world of the Supreme Court. Just when voting patterns appear to be well-established, the voting blocs can shift suddenly. That's what happened in the "medical marijuana" decision this week. Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, the closest thing to Siamese twins in their judicial views since the early days of "Minnesota Twins" justices ...

LAW ENFORCEMENT GROWTH INDUSTRY In trying to appraise this issue of law enforcement, courts, prisons, punishment, crime, rehabilitation, the death penalty, incarceration, and cruel and unusual punishment, much has been written and much more will be written. One point that all seem to agree upon is that crime is out of control and something must be done about it. We call this America, the land of the free, and refer to the Soviet Union as a police state, but the facts tell us another story. The facts show that this country holds more people per capita in jails than the Soviet Union. The Russians have one-third the number of people incarcerated than we do in America. In realty, citizens of ...

Desperate for Terror Arrests, FBI Turns to Entrapment by Paul Craig Roberts The U.S. has a vast and very expensive Homeland Security bureaucracy with nothing to do. There hasn't been a terrorist attack in America since 2001. There has been a vast quantity of terror alerts, the purpose of which was to scare Americans into supporting an unnecessary and illegal aggressive attack on Iraq. As very few, if any, real terrorists have turned up, the FBI has resorted to creating terrorists by soliciting Muslim-Americans and appealing to them with schemes to aid "jihadists." Recently, two American citizens were caught in a FBI sting. One, an Ivy League-educated physician, is charged with ...

Bare-breasted Eve creates uproar Texas case parallels one in Michigan June 7, 2005 BY CHRISTY ARBOSCELLO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Artists on other ends of the country, inspired by the same masterpiece, dipped their paintbrushes in hot water when they created a topless biblical first woman. It's a tale of how two unrelated murals dabbled into strikingly similar controversies. Artworks painted on outside gallery walls in Michigan and Texas contained a bare-chested Eve and transpired into court affairs after city officials deemed them inappropriate. But he said Republicans failed to prove that GOP candidate Dino Rossi would have won if those votes had been disregarded. "Unless an election is clearly ...
