Fekete Professor Emeritus Memorial University of Newfoundland Recitativo Why not assure monetary virtue by trusting, not in the monetary wisdom of men, but in an objective standard? Why not emulate our great grandfathers and tie our currency to gold? Very few economists think this would be a good idea. Rondo So few economists indeed, that it is a statistical oddity. It is all the more curious given the miserable record of the fiat dollar for the past 35 years while it has been trying to make do without a link to gold. What makes the loser ...

As Tax Slavery Day Approaches …(Ruminations on Ownership)

As Tax Slavery Day approaches and I assemble the pieces of paper necessary to account to Uncle Sam for every penny I earned last year, I find myself with a number of questions. (Tax Slavery Day, by the way, is Yatesspeak for April 15, which comes as regularly as Christmas and Easter, but with far less celebration.) Who owns the individual? Do I own my life and the fruits of my labors, or does it all belong to the state? Isn’t self-ownership one of the necessary conditions for true liberty (as opposed, perhaps, to "democracy")? We no longer have self-ownership in America. Not even close. As I look at these forms, I am compelled to admit: given what a Marxist would call the ...

Secret U.S. Court Approved Record Number Of Terror Warrants Last Year

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. government requested and won approval for a record number of special warrants last year for secret wiretaps and searches of suspected terrorists and spies, 75 per cent more than in 2000, the administration disclosed Friday. Assistant attorney general William Moschella revealed the figure in an annual report to Congress. Last year's total of 1,754 approved warrants was only slightly higher than the 1,724 approved in 2003. But the number has climbed markedly since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, as authorities have moved aggressively against terror suspects. In 2000, there were 1,003 warrants approved under the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Since ...

They Hate the Rule of Law

During the series of Witch Hunts that constituted the GOP's orchestrated reaction to the election and re-election of President Clinton, we constantly heard the tiring refrain that it was all about the rule of law. It wasn't the sex, it was the lying (under oath), doncha know? Well needless to say, none of our friends on the other side of the aisle ever really believed what they were saying, and the depths of their genuine hatred -- or at least utter disregard -- for the rule of law has become abundant in the years since then. That this is so has been evident in the ceasless invective against "activist judges" (read: any judge with whom we disagree) and lawyers that has been part ...

Dissent a dirty word at Bush talks Supporters eject, ban people from events March 31, 2005 BY RON HUTCHESON FREE PRESS WASHINGTON STAFF WASHINGTON -- Some of President George W. Bush's supporters seem to be going overboard in their efforts to stifle dissent when he comes to town to talk about changing Social Security. In Denver, three people say they were booted out of a presidential event last week even though they never uttered a peep, apparently because their car bore a bumper sticker denouncing the war in Iraq. In Fargo, N.D., last month, local Republicans developed a blacklist of more than three dozen residents, including a city commissioner, who were to be banned from Bush's ...

Conservative Federal Judge Blasts Congress Over "Terri's Law"

I know it may seem a little bit belated at this point, but I wanted to call your attention to an opinion issued yesterday by Judge Stanley Birch of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Birch wrote a concurrence when his court denied the Schindlers' last-gasp appeal, presumably, as the noted Constitutional law scholar Erwin Chemerinsky observed, to go "on the record" about "Terri's Law" and Congress's behavior before it was too late. It's quite a scathing opinion (PDF): In resolving the Schiavo controversy it is my judgment that, despite sincere and altruistic motivation, the legislative and executive branches of our government have acted in a manner demonstrably at ...

Republicans Find Agenda Conflicts With States' Rights Principles An AP News Analysis By Jim Abrams Associated Press Writer Published: Mar 31, 2005 WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans who swear by the principle of states' rights are having to make some exceptions when it comes to the Terri Schiavo case, or reining in trial lawyers, protecting the sanctity of marriage and advancing the party's other priorities. Capping medical malpractice payouts, putting in place President Bush's centerpiece education law and modernizing the election system also are among the GOP goals that, critics say, expand federal powers at the expense of states' rights. "Our members have raised the alarm" ...

Looking into the Spyglass Portland's Red Squad past plays into present-day terrorism debate. BY ANGELA VALDEZ The City Council can draw from a long line of historic police-surveillance abuses as it prepares to reaffirm Portland's liberal-burg status by pulling out of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force. With the council expected to vote tonight on a resolution demanding greater civilian oversight of the task force-a deal-breaker for the FBI-local activists point to parallels between the police who staff the 8-year-old JTTF and cops who kept tabs decades ago on union organizers and suspected Communists. The two Portland Police Bureau officers now with the JTTF had previous assignments ...

Mayor Tom Potter originally planned to vote Wednesday on a resolution that would require the city to pull out of the Joint Terrorism Task Force if the FBI refused to give him and Police Chief Derrick Foxworth greater access to federal files. Searching garbage requires warrant, appeals court rules The ruling says police can't use items found in the trash as evidence in two drug cases Thursday, March 31, 2005 ASHBEL S. GREEN The Oregon Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that Portland police officers were wrong to search the curbside garbage can of a fellow officer for evidence of drug abuse, saying police must first get a search warrant. The ruling involved both the Portland police case and an unrelated drug investigation of a Columbia County couple. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1988 that the U.S. Constitution does not require police to get a warrant before searching curbside garbage because people could not reasonably ...

Patriot Act used in Mayfield case, government says By RUKMINI CALLIMACHI Associated Press Writer PORTLAND, Ore. - FBI agents used provisions of the USA Patriot Act during their investigation last year of a Portland attorney who was wrongly jailed for two weeks on suspicion of involvement in the Madrid train bombings, according to a Justice Department letter. The Patriot Act allows for covert searches of homes, without conventional search warrants. Brandon Mayfield was jailed last May after his fingerprint was incorrectly matched to one found on a bag of detonators near the scene of the Madrid attack, which killed 191 people. He was released after the FBI admitted its mistake. Mayfield, ...

Compromise Reached Over Marine Photograph By Shellie Bailey-Shah and KATU Web Staff Salem, Ore, - After a Salem high school student was told she could not post a photograph of her Marine brother holding a weapon in a classroom, school district officials have now come up with a compromise that is agreeable to both sides. The controversy began when Shea Riecke brought a picture to McKay High School for an assignment showing the school's graduates at work. However, the principal would not allow the picture to go up because two of the soldiers in the photograph are seen holding assault rifles. Principal Cynthia Richardson cited the school's zero tolerance policy on weapons as a reason for ...

To objectively ascertain the following, one may need to re-examine preconceived ideologies relating to the dualistic nature of mankind. Resolving the philosophical question of whether we are inherently good or inherently evil is tantamount in shaping our perception of reality; specifically, the spiritual variable within the equation of ...

The city's demands come amid a nationwide debate over possible inappropriate federal use of local officers in the anti-terror fight Tuesday, March 29, 2005 The debate over the Rose City's role in a federal anti-terrorism team may seem like a distinctly Portland kind of dust-up. But as Mayor Tom Potter and city commissioners get serious about making Portland the first city in the country to pull out of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, they're diving into a growing national debate about the relationship between local police and federal investigators after Sept. 11. "This is a fundamental issue playing out in Portland: The federal government is relying increasingly on local officers to ...

Colorado Supreme Court Throws Out Death Penalty From Bible-Reading Jurors By Steven K. Paulson Associated Press Writer Published: Mar 28, 2005 DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Supreme Court on Monday threw out the death penalty in a rape-and-murder case because jurors had studied Bible verses such as "eye for eye, tooth for tooth" during deliberations. On a 3-2 vote, justices ordered Robert Harlan to serve life in prison without parole for kidnapping 25-year-old cocktail waitress Rhonda Maloney in 1994, raping her at gunpoint for two hours and then fatally shooting her. The jurors in Harlan's 1995 trial sentenced him to die, but defense lawyers discovered five of them had looked ...

State, 1; Schiavo, 0 by Gary North With Terri Schiavo close to death as I write, let me say that what I say here is not going to affect the outcome. She is going to die. But so are 50 million unborn infants this year and every year, worldwide. For them, there are no headlines. There are representative cases that, for unpredictable reasons, do get headlines. The Schiavo case is one. Such cases are important as representative cases that point to where we are headed: judicially, morally, and economically. Terri Schiavo is going to die because the state is paying for her, and it wants off the hook. But it does not want to admit defeat, so it will not allow private parties to pick up the ...

by Douglas Herman In 1912 the steamship Titanic was an enormous floating palace with many levels of society enclosed in a single vessel. The upper levels of the ship housed the wealthy and powerful. Below the richly furnished staterooms of the elite, the corresponding levels of society descended to the very bottom of the ship, where the lowest classes lived and worked. "At her launching in May 1911, the British press hailed the White Star Line’s 46,000-ton superliner Titanic as ‘the Wonder Ship,’ the most stupendous, the most luxurious, the safest ship afloat," wrote Sir James Bisset. Despite the media rapture that heralded the Titanic as the most ...
