BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- Cingular Wireless LLC pulled a ringtone from its Web site Tuesday after learning that it carried a message the company called "blatantly offensive." The cell phone company became aware of the ringtone, which uses mixed English and Spanish and threatens deportation, after an inquiry from a reporter for The Brownsville Herald. The newspaper reported in its online edition Tuesday that the ringtone started with a siren, followed by a male voice saying in a Southern drawl, "This is la Migra," a slang term for the Border Patrol. "Por favor, put the oranges down and step away from the cell phone. I repeat-o, put the oranges down and step ...

May 10 (Bloomberg) -- Almost half of U.S. population growth last year was Hispanic, adding the equivalent of a city the size of Phoenix, U.S. Census Bureau statistics showed. The 1.3 million Hispanics added in the year that ended in July 2005 included 800,000 births and 500,000 immigrants, according to census figures released today. The nation grew by 2.8 million overall, to 296.4 million people. Hispanics are the U.S.'s largest minority group, at 42.7 million people, followed by blacks, at 39.7 million, according to the figures. Hispanics are now 14.4 percent of the population and blacks are 13.4 percent, Census spokesman Robert Bernstein said. ``It's important to underscore that a lot ...

DHS: DENY, HEDGE, SPIN

The Customs and Border Protection agency at DHS has issued a statement, much-ballyhooed by blind Bush supporters, which calls the Inland Valley Bulletin's story on the Border Patrol/Minutemen/Mexican government "inaccurate." Let's examine the full bluster: Today’s report by the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, “U.S. tipping Mexico to Minuteman patrols,” is inaccurate. Border Patrol does not report activity by civilian, non-law enforcement groups to the Government of Mexico. During a detention of a legal or illegal immigrant that produces an allegation of improper treatment, Border Patrol reports the allegation and allows the appropriate consulate to interview the ...

Immigrant-Rights Organizers Look to Ballot Box By Teresa Watanabe Times Staff Writer 9:09 PM PDT, May 9, 2006 LOS ANGELES -- Aiming to transform street passions into political power, organizers of recent immigrant-rights marches Tuesday announced a national campaign to produce 1 million new citizens and voters by the November midterm elections. The drive will "channel the unprecedented momentum of our previous marches into a targeted mass campaign for civic action," Roman Catholic Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala said at a news conference at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. Flanked by immigrant mothers holding white Mothers' Day roses to symbolize their ...

U.S. tipping Mexico to Minuteman patrols

While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen -- and telling the Mexican government where they are. According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that ...

10 minutes ago Frustrated by the political rhetoric surrounding the illegal immigration debate, a political consultant and a Web designer are launching an Internet campaign aimed at shattering stereotypes about Latinos and getting them involved. The site for the new "I am a Proud American" campaign, http://www.iamaproudamerican.com, was designed to cross ethnic and social lines and hook people, young and old, creators Bettina Nava and Max Fose said. "Were hoping it's edgy, it's controversial," said Nava, a Republican political consultant who has worked with Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), R-Ariz. "I don't know what the impact this endeavor is going to have in the ...

'Sanctuary City' for Immigrants Gets Pricey Cambridge, Mass., Is a Sanctuary for Illegal Immigrants - if Any Can Afford It

The Associated Press CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - This famously liberal city is serving notice that illegal immigrants are welcome, even while Congress is considering tough new penalties. Police won't harass you. Education and health care are available. Here's the hitch: You probably can't afford to live here. Back in 1985, when Cambridge first declared itself a "sanctuary city," rent control kept apartments affordable. Today, however, Cambridge no longer has rent control; cheap apartments were turned into luxury condominiums and the city home of Harvard and MIT is among the most expensive places to live in the United States. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is around ...

Russia's Nazis launch wave of racist attacks

WEARING camouflage and firing pellets from imitation AK-47 assault rifles, the Russians acting out battle scenes in the woods last week could have been mistaken for weekenders taking part in a game of paintball. But the secret military training exercise 70 miles southeast of Moscow was far more sinister. The three-day gathering was attended by 50 hardline neo-Nazis who worship Adolf Hitler and believe that dark-skinned immigrants living in Russia should be killed. The boot camp, which had taken months to organise, was planned to train them in combat skills and extremist ideology. Those taking part either support or have helped carry out a string of vicious racist attacks that have ...

MY VISIT TO THE MINUTEMEN H.Q. IN ARIZONA  By: Devvy KiddMay 1, 2006 NewsWithViews.comOn April 19, 2006, I was at the Minutemen HQ in Arizona. I cannot give you the exact location as all media are required to sign an agreement which prohibits revealing the location of their base operations and non disclosure of the names of ranchers who are donating use of their property for the Minutemen. Not a problem for me because I fully understand there is a war going on along those four border states. The safety and security of these operations requires this type of secrecy and also to keep the enemy off balance. It's called guerilla warfare. I can tell you the location is far from a 7-11, ...

WASHINGTON -- Sending a brick to your congressman might cost more than a plain old letter, but there's no doubt that it carries more weight. Four bricks landed in the offices of Nevada's Washington representatives in recent days, sent by constituents who want Congress to build a wall or otherwise secure the U.S.-Mexico border. "The first one we got we were all wide-eyed, like, what's a brick doing here?" said David Cherry, spokesman for Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev. Scores of lawmakers on Capitol Hill have been hit by the grass-roots brick campaign, including Reps. Jim Gibbons and Jon Porter, both R-Nev., and Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev. Gibbons' brick came with a letter stating, ...

A posse of 100 volunteers and deputies with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office will be assigned to patrol the desert and main roadways in the southwest area of the county and arrest illegal immigrants, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a news release. The effort is an attempt to slow the tide of illegal immigrants into the county, Arizona's most populous, according to the release. Well, it appears that the millions of hop-scotching flag-waving and dancing illegal immigrants had a rather nice field day Monday, with Mexican flags and picnics, when they skipped work, stalled traffic and pulled the cameras’ acute eyes away from the all too identifiable and deeply brooding miens of New York’s senior trust buster and Massachusetts’ junior rat terrier and prolific Blistex user. A few thousand even got the chance to turn Bill Richardson’s carefully crafted shadow boxing antics into a real form of a major Duke-city send up with the police in Santa Ana, California, when riot attired cops battled with the peaceful all demanding aliens for control of the ...

The tour, which starts from L.A. today, is a response to immigrant rights marches and will focus on loss of jobs. May 3, 2006 Seeking to counter mass demonstrations by immigrant rights groups, organizers of the Minuteman Project plan to launch a nationwide caravan in Los Angeles today that will focus, in large part, on the jobs they contend are lost to illegal immigrants. In particular, the group hopes to highlight the concern over job losses in the African American community. "They are the most harmed by illegal immigration, and it's time that we focused our efforts in our inner cities," said Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist, who plans to kick off the nine-day caravan ...

Teddy Roosevelt On Immigrants

Teddy Roosevelt On Immigrants 5-1-6 The following is one of my favorite thoughts on the issue of immigration. It's from President Theodore Roosevelt in a letter to the American Defense Society in 1919, 10 years after his presidency. --Lou Dobbs "In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance ...

SASABE, Mexico - Wearing tight jeans and a glittery “bebe” T-shirt, the 17-year-old scrambled out of a packed van as the temperature edged toward 90 degrees in this barren stretch of the U.S.-Mexican border. Carrying no hat or sunscreen, the teenager who called herself Adriana Brenda said the longest hike she’d taken was through a shopping mall. But here she was, ready for a three-day trek across the desert. She carried two gallons of water — enough, experts say, to keep her hydrated for two hours. As temperatures rise, the U.S. Border Patrol and aid groups are gearing up for what they fear could be one of the deadliest summers for migrants sneaking into the United ...

Tue May 2, 12:30 PM ET Illegal immigrants and their supporters vowed to keep up the pressure on Congress for reforms after more than 1 million people stepped out of the shadows and poured into the streets in a nationwide show of economic clout. A day after rallies, boycotts and marches in Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Miami and elsewhere, the challenge for immigration advocates was to extend the momentum of Monday's "Day Without Immigrants" into a sustainable effort to get immigrants more involved in the political process. "We have far exceeded our expectations," said Mahonrry Hidalgo, chairman of the Immigration Committee of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New ...

National Anthem Sung In Spanish At First Bush Inaugural On Friday, President Bush blasted the idea of singing the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish. But Bush’s highly-scripted 2001 inaugural ceremony actually featured a rendition of the national anthem sung in Spanish by Jon Secada. From Cox News Service, 1/18/01: The opening ceremony reflected that sentiment. A racially diverse string of famous and once famous performers entertained Bush, soon-to-be First Lady Laura Bush, Vice President-elect Richard B. Cheney and his wife, Lynne, who watched on stage from a special viewing area. Pop star Jon Secada sang the national anthem in English and Spanish. Apparently, Secada singing the ...

It was billed as "A Day Without Immigrants." According to its propagandists, official and media, the purpose of the May Day walkout from schools and jobs and boycott of shops and stores was to show how much immigrants contribute and how they deserve appreciation and respect, and not to be treated like criminals. But if this was all it was about, there would have been no need to go on strike. Americans have always welcomed immigrants. They are better treated here than anywhere on earth. While most Americans believe we now need a timeout to assimilate the 36 million here and their children – like the moratorium we had in the Roosevelt-Truman-Eisenhower-Kennedy years – no ...
