The Democrat's Immigration Priority

The great thing about racists is they'll always take the bait. You won't get far into an immigration-reform debate, for instance, before the GOP's more zealous legislators start doing things like criminalizing priests and calling Miami a "third world country." Which is why Democrats ought to be more eager to spend 2010 debating immigration. Back in summer 2009, that looked like the plan. President Obama made a big show of brainstorming reforms, by holding a White House summit and meeting with legislators in both parties. New York Sen. Charles Schumer teamed up with South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham to work on a bipartisan bill and immigration seemed ...

Worker ID Card at Center of Immigration Plan March 8, 2010 by national National Workers ID Card Immigration Plan Calls for ID Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain. Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker. The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are ...

Texas vs. California: No contest

March 08, 2010Texas vs. California: No contestRick Moran One is a big government state, the other a small government state. One has lost population, one has gained. One has low taxes, the other high.Is it any wonder that California is near default while Texas thrives?Michael Barone:Texas is a different story. Texas has low taxes -- and no state income taxes -- and a much smaller government. Its legislature meets for only 90 days every two years, compared with California's year-round legislature. Its fiscal condition is sound. Public employee unions are weak or nonexistent. But Texas seems to be delivering superior services. Its teachers are paid less than California's. But its test ...

Reporting from Washington - Despite steep odds, the White House has discussed prospects for reviving a major overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, a commitment that President Obama has postponed once already. Obama took up the issue privately with his staff Monday in a bid to advance a bill through Congress before lawmakers become too distracted by approaching midterm elections. In the session, Obama and members of his Domestic Policy Council outlined ways to resuscitate the effort in a White House meeting with two senators -- Democrat Charles E. Schumer of New York and Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina -- who have spent months trying to craft a bill. According to a ...

AZ may criminalize presence of illegal immigrants

PHOENIX – Over the past several years, immigration hard-liners at the Arizona Legislature persuaded their colleagues to criminalize the presence of illegal border-crossers in the state and ban soft immigration policies in police agencies — only to be thwarted by vetoes from a Democratic governor. This year, their prospects have improved. A proposal to draw local police deeper into the fight against illegal immigration has momentum, and even opponents expect the new Republican governor to sign off on the changes. The proposal would make Arizona the only state to criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants through an expansion of its trespassing law. It also would require police ...

A boy steps boldly into the night traffic and waves a gun to bring the cars to a halt, clearing a path for a motorcycle which screeches into the intersection. Riding pillion is another boy, brandishing a machinegun. Later two teenagers, also riding pillion on motorbikes, flash their guns at other motorists; nearby, a boy can be seen taking aim with a rifle equipped with a telescopic sight. Other youths wander the street smoking crack. For residents, the junction between the busy Dom Helder Câmara and dos Democráticos, in North Rio de Janeiro, has become known as the Corner of Fear — and video footage of daily life there has shocked a nation already familiar with guns and ...

Illegal Immigrants: Not So Scary

Illegal Immigrants: Not So Scary Steve Chapman Sunday, February 21, 2010 From listening to the more vigorous critics of illegal immigration, our porous borders are a grave threat to safety. Not only can foreign terrorists sneak in to target us, but the most vicious criminals are free to walk in and inflict their worst on innocent Americans. In xenophobic circles, this prospect induces stark terror. Fox News' Glenn Beck has decried an "illegal immigrant crime wave." A contributor to Patrick Buchanan's website asserts, "Every day, in the United States, thousands of illegal aliens unleash a reign of terror on Americans." Sure they do. And I'm Penelope Cruz. ...

Having spent three weeks in a hospital in Naples, Florida with my wife I couldn’t help noticing what was going on in the hospital and I had a lot of time to talk to the doctors and nurses about what I had observed. Below is a commentary from an ER Doctor. Do you think this might be a big reason our health care system and our social security system are so screwed up? Do you think this might be a big reason our taxes keep going up? Who do you think these people are going to vote for? From a Florida ER doctor: "I live and work in a state overrun with illegal's. They make more money having kids than we earn working full-time. Today I had a 25-year old with 8 kids - that’s ...

Latinos say their votes could tip 40 congressional races

WASHINGTON -- Failing to overhaul the nation's immigration system, currently a backburner issue for Congress and President Barack Obama, could play a pivotal role in key mid-term election races in November, according to a new study on Latino voting patterns. The report by America's Voice, which supports comprehensive new immigration policies, says revising the laws is the defining issue for Latino voters. The report says that progress - or the lack thereof - in revamping immigration laws and regulations could affect as many as 40 congressional races in areas with sizeable Latino populations, including the re-election bids of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Sen. John ...

CHIBA — The body of an unidentified person, believed to be an adult black male, was found in the landing gear bay of a Delta airliner that arrived at Narita airport from New York on Sunday, Chiba prefectural police said. A mechanic found the body in the left bay of the Boeing 777 and reported it to police shortly after 6 p.m., they said. The man was only wearing a long-sleeve shirt and jeans, and he was apparently frozen to death as his body showed signs of frostbite, according to police, adding the man had no identification on him.

BOSTON -- President Barack Obama's African aunt is going before an immigration judge for a second time to argue she should be allowed to stay in the United States. Kenya native Zeituni Onyango is scheduled to appear Thursday in U.S. Immigration Court in Boston. Onyango moved to the United States in 2000. Her first asylum request was rejected. She was ordered deported in 2004. But she didn't leave the country and continued to live in public housing in Boston. Her status as an illegal immigrant was revealed just days before Obama was elected. Obama says he didn't know his aunt was living in the country illegally. He says laws covering the situation should be followed. A ...

Phoenix OKs 2% sales tax on food items

Desperate to save police, fire and other city jobs, a divided Phoenix City Council on Tuesday approved a sales tax on grocery items that will generate tens of millions of dollars a year. The 2 percent food tax will take effect April 1 and expire after five years, though Mayor Phil Gordon said the council has the option of reversing its decision after it hears from the public during 15 budget hearings planned for this month. The tax on milk, meat, vegetables and other food purchased by shoppers will generate an estimated $12.5 million for the fiscal year that ends June 30. It will raise another $50 million for fiscal 2011. Food purchased with food stamps will not be taxed. The extra tax ...

Hit-and-Run: Death in a 'Sanctuary City'

It was one of the strangest hit-and-runs police had ever seen in Austin, Texas. Early last September, officers answering a call at 4:19 a.m. found a young man dead along a highway. They surmised he was a motorcyclist. He was, after all, wearing motorcycle garb -- a helmet, black-leather jacket, boots. A few hundred feet away, officers spotted a single skid mark running down the highway, and disappearing from sight. Oddly, no motorcycle could be found. A check of the victim's driver's license revealed his name: Eric M. Laufer. Laufer, 25, was a highly-regarded musician and songwriter in Austin -- and unlike many musicians here, the graduate of Boston's prestigious Berklee ...

Immigration Debate Prompts Growing Jewish-Latino Ties [Full Thread]

Washington — Even as health care reform twists in the wind, immigration policy looms as the next big political debate — and Hispanics and Jews are moving to the forefront in a burgeoning political alliance. The next three months are seen as critical in the fight for immigration reform, but the weakening of the Democrats’ grip on Congress with the recent loss of a key Massachusetts Senate seat does not bode well for the passage of reform legislation. The Jewish-Latino alliance on immigration issues builds on the heritage and experience of the Jewish community and on the enthusiasm and urgent needs of the Hispanic community, which has a strong interest in issues of family ...

Supporters of Sarah Palin at rally in Richmond, Va., on October 13, 2008. Footage and interviews by Shepherd Johnson and David Swanson. Poster Comment:Pathetic. The camera team obviously likes Obama. The saddest thing is that people in 2008 believed a vote for Obama would be a vote for peace. Lesson #1: your vote does not matter. Zip. Forget it. Both parties were effectively 100% pro-Amnesty at the time of this interview.

Hit by the recession, Mexican migrants sent home 15.7% less in remittances last year, a record drop, the country's central bank reports. Although it marked the second straight yearly decline — and the second drop since tracking began in 1996 — migrants still sent home big bucks: about $21.2 billion. For 2008, the bank reported $25.1 billion in remittances. The Banco de Mexico breaks out the types of transfers for the last three months of '09, along with a state-by-state breakdown of where the money went in Mexico from April to December. If you want to know more about how money can be transferred through a U.S. bank, the details are here. Seeking Alpha pointed out this ...

How Some Haitians Want to Save Port-au-Prince: Leave It Behind By JAY NEWTON-SMALL / PORT-AU-PRINCE AND JIMANI Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 A dozen young men jostled one another waiting in line on Jan. 24 for food and water in Cité Soleil, one of Haiti's poorest neighborhoods. One wore an Obama campaign T-shirt, and when asked about it, he and his comrades grinned and chanted, "Obama!" But when asked if they would stay in Port-au-Prince and help rebuild the devastated city as the Obama Administration is encouraging Haitians to do, they all shook their heads. "As Obama said, all Haitians are Americans, and all Americans are Haitians," said Bertrand Aboite, 31. The ...

A Southern California councilman is attracting attention and drawing some fire for declaring at an anti-immigration rally that he is "a proud racist" if that means believing that the United States should have only one flag and one language, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. In a long article posted yesterday (and flagged by memorandum), the paper writes that Santa Clarita Councilman Bob Kellar "stood by his remarks" at the Jan. 16 rally, saying they "reflected his frustration with illegal immigration, but weren't intended to express animosity against nonwhites." "It doesn't mean I'm going to saddle up the horses at midnight," said ...

SAN FRANCISCO - GOVERNOR Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested on Monday California could ease its crowded prison system by sending thousands of undocumented inmates to specially built jails in Mexico. Speaking to reporters at the Sacramento Press Club, Mr Schwarzenegger said California could ease its strained finances by a billion dollars if 20,000 illegal immigrants currently held in the state were housed across the border. 'I think that we can do so much better in the prison system alone if we can go and take, inmates for instance, the 20,000 inmates that are illegal immigrants that are here and get them to Mexico,' Mr Schwarzenegger said. 'Think about it - if California gives ...
