Mexico on the brink

Last month, President Felipe Calderón announced that Mexico was at a crossroads: the country's drug cartels had grown so powerful that they now posed a threat to future of Mexican democracy. As if to underscore his point, the country was last week gripped by a fresh wave of brutal violence, as heavily-armed gunmen laid siege to police stations across Calderón's home state, left a dozen federal agents dead by the side of a mountain highway and assassinated the mayor of a northern ranching town. The cartels' brazen attacks point to their evolution from ragged criminal collectives into de facto military organisations. Better funded, better trained and far more ...

WASHINGTON — Apparently deterred by rising unemployment in the U.S., the number of Mexican immigrants who crossed the border dropped sharply in the past year to the lowest level in a decade, even as undocumented workers already here are opting to stay. The analysis of census data from the U.S. and Mexican governments, being released today by the Pew Hispanic Center, highlights the impact of the economic downturn on Mexican immigrants. The study found that the number of immigrants arriving from Mexico fell by 249,000 from March 2008 to March 2009, down nearly 60 percent from the previous year. As a result, the annual inflow of immigrants is now 175,000, having steadily decreased from ...

Poster Comment:This is a video on the border bewtween India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh is smaller than the American state of Iowa. Yet they have a population of 156,050,883 (July 2009 est.) according to the CIA Factbook. There are an additional 20,000,000 Bangladeshis living illegally in India. The fence was built by India after the MumBai massacre. I posted this to show what we could build along our border with Mexico. We have a lot of unemplyed people who cuild build the fence and a lot of unemployed veterans with military training to guard the border. Warning. This video was made by liberals though it does show how things can go too far. This video is not embedded so you will have to ...

Commissioners eye voting rights for non-citizens Printer-friendly version Reader Comments story tools sponsored byWhether Portland can put such a system in place without a change to state law is still unclear. By TOM BELL, Staff Writer July 23, 2009 PORTLAND — Several members of the city's Charter Commission want to grant non-U.S. citizens the right to vote in city elections. It's unclear whether Portland can do this on its own, though, or whether it would have to convince the Legislature to amend state law, an unlikely prospect. Still, that hasn't stopped some commissioners from pushing the idea forward. Commissioner Anna Tevarrow, who campaigned on the issue, said ...

Prosecutors filed sexual assault charges against four boys ages 9 to 14, officials said Thursday, alleging they brutally attacked an 8-year-old girl after luring her to a shed with chewing gum. Police said the girl's parents criticized her after the violence, blaming her for bringing shame on the family. All five children are refugees from the West African nation of Liberia. The boys held the girl down while they took turns assaulting her, police said. “She was brutally sexually assaulted for a period of about 10 to 15 minutes,” police Sgt. Andy Hill said, calling it one of the worst cases the department has investigated. The 14-year-old boy was charged Wednesday as an ...

French ministry accused of covering up Bastille Day violence

The interior ministry said that around 500 cars were burned by gangs of youths around the country on the night of July 13. However it has refused to issue figures for July 14, saying only that it was "relatively calm". Journalists on local and national newspapers who tried to find out more were told by police that strict instructions had been issued from the ministry in Paris "not to communicate on the incidents of July 14". In the past, the number of cars burned on Bastille Day itself has tended to equal or exceed those destroyed the night before. The run-up to last week's holiday was marred by two much-publicised outbreaks of suburban violence. In Firminy, near ...

SENATOR BOB SMITH ON BORDER SECURITY, ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, JOBS AND BENEFITS FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS AND AMNESTY: "NO! NO! AND HELL NO!"The paragraphs below outline why amnesty and illegal immigration are morally wrong and patently unfair and I hope you will read it all carefully. However, I want to start off this issue with exactly what I will do to stop it as a U.S. Senator. There will be no vacillating or double talk from me during this campaign and I will answer the questions with strength, passion and resolve, every time I am asked , because that is the way I feel. I spent 18 years in the U.S. House and Senate. I voted 100 percent of the time against amnesty and illegal ...

Among the most shocking aspects of Barack Obama’s presidency so far has been his embrace of the power that George W. Bush assumed to incarcerate people suspected of terrorism for the rest of their lives, without a jury trial to determine whether they are in fact guilty of the offense. There is absolutely no reason why Obama and any future president cannot expand that power to other federal criminal offenses, including drug crimes and gun crimes. Let’s keep in mind, after all, that terrorism is a federal criminal offense. It was a federal criminal offense before 9/11 and it continued to be one after 9/11. Under America’s system of justice, people suspected of having ...

Jamaica - Crime and Tourism (May 24/2009) - A line that seems to have been particularly offensive to female readers of this page has been removed (it had to do with the body-type, race, and age of women hiring rent-a-dreads, which, although accurate, was overly sarcastic). One can only take so much scolding. With regard to internet activity, the page is currently getting about 100-120 views per day - somewhat under 10% of our total traffic. It also generates regular emails to the author, most of it positive, some very much not. The majority are politely answered, even those from naive souls who object, and take pride in their thorough knowledge of the part of Jamaica located within a ...

The drug war in Chihuahua intensified Tuesday with the slaying of a town mayor, the fatal shooting of a man with press credentials and double-digit homicides for the second day in a row in Juárez. Despite the killings, Juárez Mayor José Reyes Ferriz said Joint Operation Chihuahua has not been a failure even if the military has been unable to quell bloodshed that has claimed more than 1,000 lives this year.Reyes, responding to criticism of the federal anti-crime deployment, said the operation has different phases that won't be complete until October, when the growing police force finishes being trained by the Mexican army. The violence Tuesday reached out to elected ...

Schumer: Amnesty Bill for Illegals by Labor Day Wednesday, July 8, 2009 6:40 PM Article Font Size WASHINGTON — The lead Democrat steering an immigration overhaul through the Senate said Wednesday that he expects to have a bill ready by Labor Day that is more generous to highly skilled immigrant workers than those who are lower skilled and is tough on future waves of illegal immigration. During an interview with The Associated Press, Sen. Chuck Schumer said an immigration bill can be done by the end of the year or early next year that works out disagreements between labor and business interests on the flow of legal foreign workers. "I think we'll have a good bill by ...

Council on Foreign Relations backs amnesty for illegals, opposes Arpaio-style raids Source: Phoenix Business Journal The uber-establishment Council on Foreign Relations said Wednesday it favors granting legal status to many of the roughly 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., creating a guest worker program for low-skilled foreign workers to come and work in the U.S and opposes local police getting to conduct immigration raids. The CFR issued an immigration policy report Wednesday that looks to lift caps on foreign university students in the U.S. and allow skilled foreign graduates to get more work visas. The international policy group also wants to create legal paths to ...

The shocking truth about speeding busts: sometimes a ticket is not the worst part. The camera looks forward through the windshield of a police car in Austin, Texas, recording a traffic bust. We see the back of Cpl. Thomas O’Connor as he strides forward on the driver side of the sedan he just stopped on South Mopac Expressway. O’Connor speaks hurriedly. He sounds angry as he identifies himself by name and department and finishes the sentence with a demand for a driver’s license and proof of insurance. Five seconds have elapsed since he left the patrol car. In the next nine seconds he tells the driver, Eugene Snelling, 32, that he was stopped for 70 in a 65 zone and for ...

Sales of Silver, Gold Coins Surge

Sales of gold and silver bullion coins were up sharply in the first half of 2009, when dealers were citing strong physical demand amid worries about other investments. Sales remained strong but abated somewhat in late spring and early summer, but there are at least some signs it might be on the rise again, said one dealer. “Over the last 30 days, business has picked up again mostly because, I believe, there is a lot of skepticism still in the market about which way the economy is heading,” said Scott Thomas, president and chief executive of American Precious Metals Exchange in Edmond, Okla. Bullion coins are meant to provide investors with a convenient and cost-effective way to ...

Italy's parliament has given final approval to a law criminalising illegal immigration and allowing citizens' patrols to help the police keep order. The new measures have been strongly criticised by human rights groups and the Vatican. Illegal immigration will be punishable by a hefty fine and those who knowingly house illegal migrants will face up to three years in prison. The law also extends detention periods for illegal migrants to six months. It was passed in the Senate (upper house) on Thursday, with 157 in favour and 124 against. The lower house passed it in May. Citizens' patrols The unarmed citizens' patrols are among the most controversial measures. A ...

If enacted, the plan would more than double the force at the border in an effort to staunch drug violence that has killed at least 11,000 in Mexico since 2006. By David Montero July 01, 2009 at 8:17 am EST With Mexico sliding deeper into violence, President Obama could be preparing to send 1,500 National Guard soldiers to shore up the border. Senior administration officials say the Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security are hashing out the plan, according to the Associated Press. If enacted, it would more than double the current National Guard operation at the border, which consists of 575 Guard members. The program would ask for National Guard volunteers to go to ...

Federal agents hunt for guns, one house at a time By DANE SCHILLER Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle June 30, 2009, 9:36PM In front of a run-down shack in north Houston, federal agents step from a government sedan into 102-degree heat and face a critical question: How can the woman living here buy four high-end handguns in one day? The house is worth $35,000. A screen dangles by a wall-unit air conditioner. Porch swing slats are smashed, the smattering of grass is flattened by cars and burned yellow by sun. “I’ll do the talking on this one,” agent Tim Sloan, of South Carolina, told partner Brian Tumiel, of New York. Success on the front lines of a government blitz on ...

I visited the Statue of Liberty for the first time last week. The morning trip to the island required only a short line to the ferry, a cursory bag inspection by bored state security. The ferry is not cheap, but visiting Liberty Island itself is "free." When we docked on Liberty Island, a long, wrap-around line was evident, containing people from an earlier ferry, as well as those from ours. It was reminiscent of a line for a broken ride at Disney World, before the linees know that the ride isn’t going anywhere. About 90 minutes later we arrived at the security checkpoint, complete with a number of GE EntryScan walkthrough devices, the "puffer." Interestingly, DHS ...

PALM SPRINGS, Ca -- In just a few weeks time, California hits the wall. And Americans should take a good, long look at the fiscal and social wreck of the Golden Land, because California is at a place to which all of America is heading. In May, when five fund-raising proposals were put on the ballot, Gov. Schwarzenegger pleaded with the overtaxed Californians not to make their state "the poster child for dysfunction." As The Economist writes, "On May 18th, they did exactly that." Arnold went to the White House for U.S. loan guarantees for new state bonds. But with the president's approval rating wilting because of a belief he is spending too much, the Obama-ites ...
