I went down to the Camp Casey candle light vigil this evening. I think Cindy Sheehan spoke but it was hard to tell. There was a huge mob holding candles surrounding her and you couldn't get close. The speakers were simply standing in the middle of a field with no stage or platform. They used a bullhorn for the PA and it wasn't very loud. I hung around on the outside of the crowd and watched people. It was a very impressive sight. I don't have a very good camera and so I couldn't really capture how it appeared. Cindy Sheehan and her Vetrans Against the War are now set up on the mall. They have the field covered with 1800 white crosses and they have set up another field with the boots of fallen soldiers. The traffic around DC got insane today with the people coming in for the rally. I haven't seen it like this since the 1.2 million showed up for the woman's march. I made a trip to Reston earlier today and every car on the train coming back had five or six people going to the rally. People coming in from Dulles with big suitcases that had sleeping bags tied on. They were coming from everywhere.

If anyone is going to be in DC this weekend, the people from http://www.YellowCakeWalk.net will be teaming up with a Street Theater / Mime Troop from San Francisco for a special marathon chimp slapping this Sunday. The event will take place on the North side of the White House and should run from about 12:30 until dark. Anyone who shows up is welcome to take part in the festivities. A few Bush masks will be available on site for the walk ons, but it would be helpful if you could bring your own. Incidentally, I just heard that Wayne Cramer from the MC5 is going to be one of the acts at the 3:00 PM concert. Is this a blast from the past or not?

Folks, keep a close eye on very soon to be Hurricane Rita. I just finished an email to Christine debating on whether or not to go ahead and post my thoughts on the matter. My primary source for weather information comes from the blogs of Dr Jeff Masters and Steve Gregory of Weather Underground. We bought huge memory cards and special batteries for our cameras in preparation for Sept 24th. I went out to test mine today and took 160 pictures around the neighborhood. Most of them were garbage, but some were pretty interesting. I posted some below: These houses were built in about 1760. It looks like the Bush team is expecting a respectable (and embarassing) turn out for the upcoming Sept 24th rally. The Freepers and some of their friends just launched a website regarding the Sept 24 demonstration here in DC: http://www.supportthetroopsweekend.org/ I was told on Saturday that the only spot they were given on Sept 24th was ten blocks from the main event. Apparently Laura Bush is having a book signing on that day and they will be next door. I'll try to confirm this tomorrow.

I saw this guy lugging a cross up near the Viet Nam War Memorial in DC. His name is John and he says he carries the cross in a different majory city each Good Friday and each September 11th. He says that he is raising money to carry the cross in Baghdad next Easter. I don't know if the photo conveys just how massive the cross is. Stopped in at the ANSWER vigil planned for 5:00 this evening. Not much going on. I got there about 5:30 and there were about 50 people present. It broke up at six o'clock sharp. The only high point was some 30 year old Freeper in a neck tie who completely lost it after the demo broke up. He cornered some young girl and began screaming some incoherent rant at her. Went on about 13th Century liberals and all kinds of goofy stuff. The White House guards finally showed up and mau mau'd him until he stalked off. The people running the demo were on the music committee for Sept 24 and will get me some info tonight about the show on the mall on the 24th. Apparently its a big deal. I'll post it if ...

DC Candle Light Vigil I just got back from the Cindy Sheehan Candle Light vigil at the White House. It was held on the new marble street between the park and the Whitehouse fence. I estimate that there about 1000 people there. In front of the White House they stood thirty to forty deep and extended width of the White House. The crowd then curled around to the other side of the string to form a big ring. To the left the Freepers were demonstrating. They had a big banner set up and it appeared that 14 people were present. Looks like Sheehan is scaring the pants off the Bush team. Drudge is down to alleging that he is receiving unsigned emails from Sheehan's relatives telling Drudge that they don't support her. No real names. Just "Aunts, Uncles, and numerous cousins". Hmmmmm. An unsigned email out of the blue. Isn't this what tipped Drudge off about kerry's affair with the intern - the one we are still waiting for him to prove up? Hmmmmmm.
