Makes me damn proud of my associated with Purdue, actually. The short version is that researchers at Purdue, which is known for having one of the finest engineering schools in the country, have concluded a 2.5 year study on the 9/11 attacks. The focus of the study was to examine the structural failure of the WTC towers with an eye towards designing buildings that could withstand aircraft strikes. But…but…but…that’s UNPOSSIBLE! The news was grim. Nine firefighters were killed after fire collapsed the roof at the Sofa Super Store, a former Piggly Wiggly on a busy retail highway. The deaths are the worst loss of firefighters since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Hrm. Anybody see any Bush admin stooges lurking around with detonators tucked under their trenchcoats? Anyone? Snark aside, my condolences to the families who lost loved ones in this tragic event, and to Charleston’s fire/rescue community. Today is the last day city workers can register for a chance to apply for disability benefits related to their work at the World Trade Center site. Those who qualify have to file a notice of participation, reserving their right to apply for a tax-free accidental disability pension. To qualify, workers must have worked at least 40 hours at one of four sites between September 11, 2001 and September 12, 2002.
