Libyan Islamists to U.S.: Don't interfere or face worse than Iraq Post Date: 2014-05-28 04:39:15 by Tatarewicz

BENGHAZI Libya (Reuters) - The leader of Islamist militant group Ansar al-Sharia in Libya's Benghazi city warned the United States on Tuesday against interference or it would face worse than the conflicts in Somalia, Iraq, or Afghanistan. Libya's young democracy is in turmoil three years after the NATO-backed war that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, with rival Islamist, anti-Islamist, regional and political factions locked in a complex struggle for influence in the OPEC member state. Four decades of Gaddafi's one-man rule left few institutions or national army to resist competing militias and brigades of former rebels who have become de facto power-brokers. Ansar al-Sharia, listed ...

Free State Project Leader Wins Victory Against Cops Trying to Punish Filming Them (New Hampshire) Post Date: 2014-05-26 11:47:22 by X-15

Good news from Carla Gericke, current president of the Free State Project (which encourages libertarians to move to New Hampshire and help turn it into a more libertarian land). Gericke had been arrested in 2010 by Sgt. Joseph Kelley of the Weare, New Hampshire, police department, for, among other charges, allegedly violating the state's wiretapping statues by attempting to film his actions after he'd pulled over a friend Gericke was driving behind. (The camera she aimed at him wasn't actually working.) Gericke never went to trial, as the city declined to go ahead with the prosecution. But Gericke went ahead and sued the officer, the department, and city, claiming that the ...

Snowden's Journalist of Choice In June of 2013, Glenn Greenwald was the first to report on the classified national security agency documents leaked by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, through a series of articles in "The Guardian." Last November, VICE traveled to meet Greenwald at his home in Brazil, three months after his partner David Miranda was detained by British authorities at Heathrow international airport under the guise of anti-terrorism legislation. The investigation is ongoing. The UK and the US governments hate the journalism that Glen is doing. What they want to do is what they're always trying to do in these cases, which is use intimidation and ...

“In person”–or “in the flesh”? Post Date: 2014-05-24 01:26:44 by Lorie Meacham

Hi Al, I recently had an interesting experience in court that I would like to share with you. In a nut shell, I gummed up the works with the judge by stating that I was present in the flesh. She was literally tossing and turning in her seat, visibly frustrated and was searching for ways to regain control of the situation. I believe that the judge was trying to find a way to have me make an appearance in court in person or by representing myself (my self?), so that she could administer the trust account. I said that I was not representing any artificial persons, that I do not make appearances in court by paper and that I was present ...
Wings of Swiss air force clipped in nationwide ballot Post Date: 2014-05-22 05:36:32 by Tatarewicz

SwissInfo Voters have rejected the purchase of Swedish fighter jets for Switzerlands air force. It is the first major defeat for the government in a ballot on military matters for 20 years. Final results show 53.4% of voters came out against the acquisition of 22 JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets by the Swedish Saab company. Political analyst Claude Longchamp of the leading GfS Bern research and polling institute says opposition by both the political left and some centrist parties made the difference. It gives the armed forces something to think about, says Longchamp. It is the first time that the left, who had challenged a parliament decision to a nationwide vote, has been ...

Govt Seizes Control of All Your Financial Accounts Written by Damon Geller Everyone knows that the United States has gone bankrupt. As the U.S. government and the Fed poured trillions of dollars of YOUR money into the banks and markets after the 2008 economic collapse, this unprecedented level of money-printing is catapulting the U.S. debt to $28 trillion by 2018. But now, the U.S. government and the Fed are completely out of ammo. They desperately need money to maintain their own power, and taxes are no longer enough. So in order to keep the Ponzi scheme going, the U.S. government has made several highly controversial moves to be in position to seize control of all your financial ...
Sino/Russian Unity: What Washington Most Fears Post Date: 2014-05-20 15:23:22 by Stephen Lendman

Sino/Russian Unity: What Washington Most Fears by Stephen Lendman China is an economic powerhouse. It's the world's second largest economy. It's heading for number one status. Perhaps sooner than most expect. It's growth way outdistances America. It's multiples greater. Russia matches Washington's military might. It does so in nuclear weapons strength. With sophisticated delivery systems. Able to strike global targets accurately. With hugely destructive force. Enough to decimate potential adversaries. Perhaps to discourage potential aggression. Russia is rich in what China needs most. Oil and gas mainly. Technological expertise. Industrial equipment. ...

Did you know that 85 to 90 percent of wars casualties are non-combatant civilians? That is the conclusion reached by a nine-person research team in the June 2014 issue of the American Journal of Public Health. The deaths of soldiers who are fighting the war are a small part of the human and economic cost. Clearly, wars do not protect the lives of civilians. The notion that soldiers are dying for us is false. Non-combatants are the main victims of war. Keep that in mind for July 4th, which is arriving in six weeks. July 4th is Americas most important national holiday celebrating American independence from Great Britain. On July 4th, 1776, Americas Founding Fathers ...
Judge, Jury, and Executioner: Have the Police Become a Law Unto Themselves? Post Date: 2014-05-20 14:25:33 by Lorie Meacham

Police are specialists in violence. They are armed, trained, and authorized to use force. With varying degrees of subtlety, this colors their every action. Like the possibility of arrest, the threat of violence is implicit in every police encounter. Violence, as well as the law, is what they represent.Kristian Williams, activist and author Living in a free society means not having to look over your shoulder to see whether the government is watching or fearing that a government agent might perpetuate violence upon you. Living in a free society means not having to look over your shoulder to see whether the government is watching or fearing that a government agent might perpetuate violence upon you. Unfortunately, as I detail in my book A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, subjected as we are to government surveillance, body scanners, militarized police, roadside strip searches, SWAT team raids, drones, and other trappings of a police state, we the people do not live in a free society any longer. Not only are we no longer a free people but we have become a fearful people, as well, helped along in large part by politicians eager to capitalize on our fears. As Julie Hanus ...
Is US Behind ‘Rogue’ General’s Libya Coup? Post Date: 2014-05-20 06:50:54 by Ada

Gen. Hifter Lived in Metro DC for Decades On May 14, the US Marines announced the deployment of 200 marines to Sicily, in southern Italy, as a crisis response force for Libya. They did so at the behest of the US State Department, who at the time insisted there was no specific threat, nor any imminent plan to evacuate the embassy in Tripoli. Just four days later, General Khalifa Hifter and his self-proclaimed Libyan National Army attacked Tripoli, took over parliament, and announced his intention to purge the nation of Islamists, starting with the parliamentarians themselves. Its Gen. Hifters second attempted coup this year, and seems to be going quite ...

Why Won't Kerry Leave Syria Alone? Post Date: 2014-05-19 06:47:23 by Ada

US Secretary of State John Kerry seems to be on a personal mission to draw the US into an invasion of Syria. At the least, he remains determined to continue backing the rebellion against the Syrian government until the country is completely destroyed. Meeting yesterday in London, the self-styled "Friends of Syria," including, in addition to the US and UK, such model democracies as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, determined to increase assistance to those who for three years have fought to overthrow the Syrian government. Kerry took the opportunity at the meeting to again accuse the Syrian government of using chemical weapons, apparently not at all chastened by his fraudulent ...

PressTV... The US city of Portland has recently got rid of $9 million, or 25 percent, of its investments in Walmart. This marks the beginning of a divestment program that will purge Portland's investment portfolio of $36 million in Walmart bonds by 2016, according to a press release. The divestment plan is part of the city's responsible investment initiative, introduced by City Commissioner Steve Novick, and adopted in October 2013. The initiative also prohibits the city from purchasing Walmart bonds in the future. Portland is not only discontinuing its investments in Walmart, but has set up a committee to advise it on making socially responsible investments in the future. The ...

Meet Russell George. Russell was driving Stott Street one Sunday night last year, when he noticed a police van driving fast and recklessly. The van was swerving and turned into oncoming traffic. At this point I was concerned about the safety of other road users, self-employed George told The Witness. He suddenly jammed on his brakes and came to a complete stop. I got out of my car and went towards him and I asked him if he knew what he was doing. He started his car and carried on driving, he said. Continuing to drive recklessly, the policeman turned into Logan Road and came to a stop at the Howard Road intersection. George decided it would be best ...

Don’t Buy the Lies, 8 Jury Nullification Objections Rebutted Post Date: 2014-05-16 21:31:06 by Lorie Meacham

A recent Chicago Tribune editorial targets a new fully informed jury bill introduced by the New Hampshire House of Representatives. The bill would strengthen the current state law passed in 2012 that allows lawyers to inform the jury of its right to judge the facts and the application of the law in relation to the facts in controversy. The editorial is noteworthy, because it deploys the most common legal establishment objections to jury nullification. Objection #1: Jury nullification was a tool of the Jim Crow South bad jury nullification It begins by reminding readers of one of the most horrific examples of racial injustice in the Jim Crow South. In 1955, two white men went ...
