Police in Maryland say a man has been charged with assault for using a slingshot to fire glass marbles at a speed camera van. Authorities say Bruce Lawrence May of Ellicott City was arrested Tuesday. The 50-year-old Lawrence was also charged with destruction of property and reckless endangerment. He was released on $3,000 bond. Howard County police say that at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, the van was near Manor Woods Elementary School when the operator heard something hit the side of the vehicle. Mittens Comes to Town Post Date: 2012-06-28 15:20:05 by Ada

Yesterday, I needed to get some new Heli-Coil inserts to fix some damaged threads, so I hopped on one of my bikes and headed into town town being Roanoke-Salem in southwest Virginia. On the way home, I encountered a traffic jam. This is a rare almost nonexistent occurrence down here. Almost always, theres an accident and thats whats holding things up. This time, Mittens was holding things up. Mittens had come to town along with his Praetorians, a motorized consort of black SUVs with black tinted windows and what appeared to be every cop in town (and perhaps the surrounding towns, too). Keeping us safe, apparently, ...

How the Taliban mastered the operational art of modern war. The greatest intellectual challenge in Fourth Generation warwar against opponents that are not statesis how to fight it at the operational level. NATO in Afghanistan, like the Soviets three decades ago, has been unable to solve that riddle. But the Taliban appears to have done so. The operational level of war lies between strategy and tactics. While great commanders have always thought and fought at the operational level, the concept was not formally recognized until the 19th century. As usual, it was the Prussian army that led the way. Some historians think the operational level may have been formalized by Field ...

74% Pakistanis consider United States an enemy country Post Date: 2012-06-28 02:49:14 by Tatarewicz

Three-in-four Pakistanis consider the United States an enemy country, a new survey conducted by the Washington-based Pew Global Attitudes Project indicates. The Pew survey, which was published on its website on Wednesday, said that last year 69 percent used to hate the US but in 2012 the figure jumped to 74 percent. The survey also showed an exceptionally low regard for US President Barack Obama among Pakistanis. They believe Obama is as bad a leader as former US President George W. Bush had been during his final year in office. US-Pakistan relations have been strained over the civilian casualties caused by the non-UN-sanctioned US drone attacks, and over a number of other issues. ...
Texas college hacks government drone Post Date: 2012-06-28 00:21:42 by Buzzard

There are a lot of cool things you can do with $1,000, but scientists at an Austin, Texas college have come across one that is often overlooked: for less than a grand, howd you like to hijack a US government drone? A group of researchers led by Professor Todd Humphreys from the University of Texas at Austin Radionavigation Laboratory recently succeeded in raising the eyebrows of the US government. With just around $1,000 in parts, Humphreys team took control of an unmanned aerial vehicle operated by the US Department of Homeland Security. After being challenged by his lab, the DHS dared Humphreys crew to hack into their drone and take command. Much to their chagrin, they ...

Too Much College Post Date: 2012-06-26 08:29:25 by Ada

In President Barack Obama's 2012 State of the Union address, he said that "higher education can't be a luxury. It is an economic imperative that every family in America should be able to afford." Such talk makes for political points, but there's no evidence that a college education is an economic imperative. A good part of our higher education problem, explaining its spiraling cost, is that a large percentage of students currently attending college are ill-equipped and incapable of doing real college work. They shouldn't be there wasting their own resources and those of their families and taxpayers. Let's look at it. Robert Samuelson, in his Washington Post ...
Only a lunatic would join the EU: Swiss minister Post Date: 2012-06-24 03:37:41 by Tatarewicz

Nobody in their right mind would consider joining the European Union in its current state, Switzerlands defence minister believes. In an interview with Geman news weekly Die Zeit, Defence Minister Ueli Maurer said: Europe has passed its high point. In Switzerland, he said, nobody still in possession of their marbles wants to join the EU. This alliance of states has lost much of its credibility. Maurer, who represents the far-right Swiss Peoples Party, added: "We are the best economy in the world. People admire our democracy; we are a country with many virtues. "We are actually the model for the future. Sharing responsibility with the people ...
Hands-On Accountability for the Police Murder of Stanley Gibson Post Date: 2012-06-23 15:43:02 by Ada

Stanley Gibson, a disabled Gulf War veteran, was murdered in a Las Vegas parking lot last December 12. He was shot seven times in the back of the head, without provocation, by a stranger wielding an AR-15 rifle. The killer, 34-year-old Jesus Arevalo, remains at large and is easy to find: Hes an officer with the Las Vegas Metro Police. Gibson was unarmed. He was not a criminal suspect and posed no threat to anybody. His killing was a clear and unmistakable case of criminal homicide. Yet Arevalo has not been charged with a crime. He is on an extended vacation called "administrative leave," during which he continues to collect his taxpayer-funded salary and benefits. ...
President ousted, Paraguay in turmoil Post Date: 2012-06-23 01:12:25 by Tatarewicz

Paraguayans have clashed with police outside the Congress building in Asuncion, shortly after it was announced that the Senate had voted to remove President Fernando Lugo from office. The lower house of the Paraguayan Congress impeached Lugo on Thursday, and the Senate opened his trial on Friday and quickly reached a guilty verdict, ousting Lugo. Lugo was immediately replaced by Vice President Federico Franco, a ferocious opponent of the leftist leader. Franco was sworn in as the new president of Paraguay on Friday evening. "Although the law's been twisted like a fragile branch in the wind, I accept Congress' decision," Lugo said in a speech on national television ...
Govt Lawyers: Drone Strikes Must Remain Classified: Insist Even Mentioning the Types of Documents That Exist a Threat Post Date: 2012-06-23 00:14:00 by F.A. Hayek Fan

US officials have been very public in talking about the CIA drone strikes, sometimes. But it depends partially on whim, and partially on whether they think they have something to lose, whether youre going to get the president jovially joking about drone strikes against the Jonas Brothers, or government lawyers angrily insisting that not only is data related to the strikes classified, but that even mentioning the existence of documents related to the program in open court is a threat to the ongoing terror war. The new argument has the US government is attempting to quash FOIA requests by the ACLU seeking documents about the legal basis by which the CIA carried out assassinations ...

Simon Black Senior Editor of Sovereign Man There are consequences to being flat broke. There are consequences to investing any level of confidence in a financial system underpinned by debt and the creation of paper currency. There are consequences for ignoring reality and pretending that everything is normal. This is one of them: European officials have flat-out admitted that they were discussing rolling out a series of harsh capital controls across the continent, including bank withdrawal limits and closing down Europes borderless Schengen area. Some of these measures have already been implemented sporadically; customers of Italian bank BNI, for example, were all frozen out of ...
Can the State Produce Wealth? Post Date: 2012-06-20 05:23:28 by Tatarewicz

In his latest speaking gaffe, President Obama once again demonstrated his ignorance on all things economics when he declared at a White House press conference that the private sector is doing fine. Obama, who once remarked on how automated teller machines are putting people out of work, blamed the stagnating economy on public sector layoffs at the state and local level: Where we are seeing weaknesses in our economy, had to do with state and local government, often times cuts initiated by governors or mayors who are not getting the kind of help that they have in the past from the federal Government, and who dont have the same flexibility as the federal government in ...
Two Alaska militia members convicted of conspiracy to commit murder Post Date: 2012-06-19 16:38:20 by CadetD

(Reuters) - The leader of an Alaska militia group and one of his followers were found guilty on Monday of conspiracy to commit murder and of various weapons offenses in a plot to kill government officials and law enforcement officers. But a U.S. District Court jury in Anchorage failed to reach a unanimous verdict on a murder conspiracy charge against a third co-defendant in a case that federal prosecutors said highlighted a rise in anti-government militancy in recent years. The prosecution of Schaeffer Cox, 28, founder of the Alaska Peacekeepers Militia, and two followers, also tested the limits of free-speech rights and the point at which violent talk can be interpreted as a threat to ...
Why Lying to Kids is a Good Thing Post Date: 2012-06-19 14:20:48 by Turtle

The only time its required to tell the truth is if the person has to know the truth. Sometimes, and most especially for kids, its necessary to tell them lies. Of course, it depends on how you define lies. Lying to kids is a form of play, and that kind of lying is necessary for them to grow up and be good people. Play is a rehearsal for growing up, and as such necessary to becoming an adult. Kittens and puppies play all the time, much to the damage of my fingers and hands. For children, one of the ways adults help children grow up is to lie to them through amusing stories. Stories are a way to transfer the accumulated wisdom of the human race from adult to child. The ones that ...
'Dear TSA: I am not your customer' Post Date: 2012-06-19 07:29:54 by Ada

The Transportation Security Administration has taken quite a beating in the news cycle so far this year. In late April, screeners were caught taking bribes to allow drugs to pass through Los Angeles International Airport. Recently, a 4-year-old was detained, yelled at, patted down and otherwise terrorized for hugging her grandmother, who hadn't completed screening yet. In April, the TSA made us safer by terrorizing a 7-year-old with cerebral palsy. CBS DC reported that Dina Frank cannot use metal detectors because she walks with crutches and leg braces. The thorough pat-down of the 7-year-old caused the family to miss their flight. No doubt such incidents will prompt people to call ...
Sometimes, Homeschooling Ain’t All it’s Cracked Up To Be Post Date: 2012-06-18 06:16:05 by Ada

My kids and I finished our 8th year of homeschooling two weeks ago. It was the very best year weve ever had, in spite of being interrupted by endless sessions of editing my book and then launching the book in March, complete with lots of interviews and excitement. As I think about our 8 years as a homeschooling family, I have to be honest. It hasnt all been happy faces and gold stars. There are some downsides that not many of us like to talk about. 1.At times, your children will be outsiders. They wont be hip to all the latest fashion trends, video games, music, and fads. Many of these are fun and harmless, but it will be your kids who may seem like the odd man out ...
US military intervention in Syria – “Not if but when” Post Date: 2012-06-17 17:44:31 by bush_is_a_moonie

As the violence in Syria continued to go from bad to worse in scope and intensity, US official sources had this to say Saturday, June 16, about planned US military operations in the war-torn country: The intervention will happen. It is not a question of if but when. A Syrian Free Army rebel delegation is now in Washington to talk about their requests for heavy weapons from the Obama administration. In their meetings with US Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford and the State Departments expert on Syria Fred Hof, the rebel leaders handed in two lists for approval: types of heavy weapons capable of challenging Bashar Assads armed forces and selected ...
Ban Weaponized Drones from the World Post Date: 2012-06-16 07:10:51 by Tatarewicz

Meticulous researchers have documented that U.S. drones are killing many innocent civilians in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere. Drones are making the world less stable and creating new enemies. Their remoteness provides those responsible with a sense of immunity. Weaponized drones are no more acceptable than land mines, cluster bombs, or chemical weapons. The world must renounce and forbid their manufacture, possession, or use. Violators must be held accountable. We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, urge the United Nations Secretary General to investigate the concerns of Navi Pillay, the U.N.'s top human rights official, that drone attacks violate international law -- ...
Hubris as the Evil Force in History Post Date: 2012-06-14 08:37:42 by Ada

I have always been intrigued by the Battle of Bull Run, the opening battle of the US Civil War, known to southerners as the War of Northern Aggression. Extreme hubris characterized both sides, the North before the battle and the South afterwards. Republican politicians and their ladies in their finery road out to Manassas, the Virginia town through which the stream, Bull Run, flowed, in carriages to watch the Union Army end the Southern Rebellion in one fell swoop. What they witnessed instead was the Union Army fleeing back to Washington with its tail between its legs. The flight of the northern troops promoted some southern wags to name the battle, the Battle of Yankee Run. ...
