Like the Roman legions vanquished in the Teutoburger Wald in Lower Saxony in 9 AD, the 17,000 police officers that marched into the woods around the nuclear storage facility in Gorleben in northern Germany on Sunday morning looked invincible. Police personnel from France, Croatia and Poland had joined in the biggest security operation ever mounted against protestors against the a train carrying nuclear waste to a depot in an isolated part of Lower Saxony’s countryside. Helicopters, water canons and police vehicles, including an armoured surveillance truck, accompanied an endless column of anti-riot police mounted on horses and also marching down the railway tracks into the dense ...

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of encouraging an act of terrorism in connection with a website that listed MPs who voted for the Iraq War, police said today. The man was taken into custody at 9.30am in connection with the internet blog which influenced a student who tried to kill (British) MP Stephen Timms. Officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit conducted a search of the man's home address in the Dunstall area of Wolverhampton and arrested him under section one of the Terrorism Act 2006, West Midlands Police said. A police spokeswoman added: "The website is the same one that was in the press last week in connection with stabbing of MP Stephen ...

A delegation of politicians and community activists gathered on August 7 in La Leonesa, a small farm town in Argentina, to hear Dr. Andres Carrasco speak about a study linking a popular herbicide to birth defects in Argentina's agricultural areas. But the presentation never happened. A mob of about 100 people attacked the delegation before they could reach the local school where the talk was to be held. Dr. Carrasco and a colleague locked themselves in a car as the mob yelled threats and beat on the vehicle for two hours. One delegate was hit in the spine and has since suffered lower-body paralysis. Another person was treated for blows to the head. A former provincial human rights ...

MSNBC host Dylan Ratigan invites guest to advocate violent revolution

It's not often that you see liberals calling for violence but that is exactly what appears to have happened Monday on a left-leaning cable network. MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan drew the ire of conservatives after he asked political cartoonist Ted Rall to explain why a violent revolution is necessary. While Ratigan didn't go so far as to call for violence himself, he opened the segment by putting the idea in the minds of his viewers. "Are things in our country so bad that it might actually be time for a revolution?" Ratigan asked. "The answer obviously is yes. The only question is how to do it?" Rall joined Ratigan to discuss his new book The Anti-American ...

Wiretap Charges Tossed in Videotaping of Trooper (FOX) A judge threw out criminal charges Monday against a Maryland man who videotaped his traffic stop by a plainclothes state trooper and posted the video on YouTube. Anthony J. Graber III had been indicted under Maryland’s wiretap law, which requires the consent of both parties to record a private conversation. His video shows the trooper pulling his gun and telling Graber to get off his motorcycle before he identifies himself as a police officer. Harford County Circuit Judge Emory A. Plitt Jr. ruled that the wiretap law did not apply to a traffic stop because the conversation was not private. “In this rapid information ...

If AT&T has its way before the Supreme Court, any business that issues a contract to customers would be able to prevent them from joining class-action lawsuits, taking away arguably the most powerful legal tool available to the little guy. By David Lazarus November 5, 2010 It hasn't gotten a lot of press, but a case involving AT&T that goes before the U.S. Supreme Court next week has sweeping ramifications for potentially millions of consumers. If a majority of the nine justices vote the telecom giant's way, any business that issues a contract to customers — such as for credit cards, cellphones or cable TV — would be able to prevent them from joining ...

Why Americans Will Believe Almost Anything By Tim O'Shea 10-30-7 Aldous Huxley's inspired 1954 essay detailed the vivid, mind-expanding, multisensory insights of his mescaline adventures. By altering his brain chemistry with natural psychotropics, Huxley tapped into a rich and fluid world of shimmering, indescribable beauty and power. With his neurosensory input thus triggered, Huxley was able to enter that parallel universe described by every mystic and space captain in recorded history. Whether by hallucination or epiphany, Huxley sought to remove all bonds, all controls, all filters, all cultural conditioning from his perceptions and to confront Nature or the World or Reality ...

Boehner under fire: First cut should be lawmakers' salaries Soon-to-be Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) is being pressed by taxpayer groups to slash the salaries of House lawmakers. Cutting member pay would show voters the new GOP majority in the House is going to lead by example in their efforts to rein in spending and start with their own wallets, say officials with three prominent taxpayer advocacy groups in Washington, D.C. “There has to be a visible gesture that people can immediately relate to,” said Pete Sepp, the executive vice president of the conservative National Taxpayers Union. “And cutting pay would be one of the best symbols, because unlike virtually anything ...

Just two days after Oklahoma voters approved a ballot measure banning state courts from considering Islamic or international law when ruling on cases, a local Muslim has filed a federal lawsuit saying the measure is unconstitutional. The lawsuit against ballot measure, State Question 755 – or better known as "Save Our State" -- seeks a temporary restraining order to block the results of the election from being certified by the state Election Board on Nov. 9. The measure is scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1. Oklahoma residents approved the measure with 70 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election. But Muneer Awad, executive director of the Council on ...

The Kid and the Benevolent Bully - A tale of exploitation

The kid had eighteen cents. The benevolent bully had a buck-forty-nine. The kid went to the corner candy store, bought a licorice pipe and a jawbreaker for two cents. He was giving serious consideration to the chewable wax lips, when he overheard a big kid at the fountain ordering a large lemonade for a dime. He put back the lips and hustled down to the grocer’s on the next block. “I can make better lemonade and sell it for a nickel,” the kid thought. So he bought a supply of lemons, sugar and paper cups, scrounged up some pitchers and a lemon squeezer from the attic, and a card table and folding chair from the garage. He perched out on the corner with a cardboard sign ...

WASHINGTON — A shooting at a Coast Guard recruiting station in Northern Virginia is connected to a string of similar incidents at military-related buildings, the FBI said Wednesday. FBI spokeswoman Lindsay Godwin said ballistics tests concluded that the same gun was used in the first four shootings, and preliminary test results also link the latest shooting. The Coast Guard incident was reported Tuesday. No one has been injured in any of the shootings. No details about the type or caliber of weapon have been released. But investigators previously have said it appeared that the shots were fired from a high-powered rifle. An unknown gunman first took aim on the National Museum of the ...

By JIM DEMINT Congratulations to all the tea party-backed candidates who overcame a determined, partisan opposition to win their elections. The next campaign begins today. Because you must now overcome determined party insiders if this nation is going to be spared from fiscal disaster. Many of the people who will be welcoming the new class of Senate conservatives to Washington never wanted you here in the first place. The establishment is much more likely to try to buy off your votes than to buy into your limited-government philosophy. Consider what former GOP senator-turned-lobbyist Trent Lott told the Washington Post earlier this year: "As soon as they get here, we need to co-opt ...

French Worker Struggles for Justice - by Stephen Lendman Since early October, France resembles May 1968, at least in part, predatory capitalism again on trial. More on that below. Today it's over austerity moves, not for raising the retirement age to 62 as misreported. It's much more, as Diana Johnstone explained in her article titled, "Collapse of Social Security: French Workers Confront the Neoliberal Policy Agenda," saying: "For one thing, (public outrage) is an expression of exasperation with the (Sarkozy) government....which blatantly favors the super-rich over the majority of working people in this country." Elected on the slogan, "Work more to earn ...

Is Crime Making a Comeback? 12 Crime Statistics That Make You Wonder What Is Happening To America

For about a decade and a half, crime rates in the United States have generally fallen. That is the good news. The bad news is that even during those "good" years, the United States still had the most car thefts, the most rapes and the most murders in the world. And even though the United States has the most people in prison in the entire world by a large margin, there are all kinds of signs that there are still enough criminals out there for crime to start moving back up again. Sure, there are some areas that are still recording small decreases in the crime rate, but there are other areas where the jump in crime statistics is more than a bit alarming. There are millions of ...

It is ideas that group men into fighting factions, that press the weapons into their hands, and that determine against whom and for whom the weapons shall be used. It is they alone, and not arms, that, in the last analysis, turn the scales. ~ von Mises (Liberalism, p. 51) Several months ago I asked readers for a suggestion of a practical tool for our age for use in withdrawing support from tyrannical government. It would be, metaphorically, a small crowbar that could be leveraged in the cracks of the armor of the state. It would be a simple and effective tactic, like Gandhi’s or Martin Luther King’s tool of nonviolence, but suited to our times. My query implied that the ...
