How to End Mexico’s Deadly Drug War
Post Date: 2010-10-29 16:45:55 by F.A. Hayek Fan

Albert Einstein declared, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” He wasn’t describing the federal government’s nearly century-long war on drugs but he might as well have been. Despite ample lip-service for “hope” and “change,” the Obama administration’s cynical response to the escalating drug prohibition-related violence around the Mexican border epitomizes Einstein’s oft-quoted observation. Since 2008 more than 7,000 people—over 1,000 last January alone, including Mexican civilians, journalists, police, and public officials—have been killed in clashes with ...

Thank Goodness for WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks has released close to 400,000 U.S. classified military documents relating to the Iraq war. The American people, the theoretical masters of the government, were not supposed to see them. So, just as it was when the website released 77,000 documents on the Afghan war in August, WikiLeaks was roundly condemned. Unnamed officials in the Obama administration are reported to have asked European governments to criminally investigate WikiLeaks director Julian Assange. There was even talk of charging him under the U.S. Espionage Act. The website Daily Beast said that “the U.S. effort reflects a growing belief that WikiLeaks and organizations like it threaten grave damage to American ...

No Free Lunch From the Hackers

I recently wrote an article posted here at LewRockwell.com on The State Versus The Internet. In it, I outlined the current (and very serious) threats to the Internet. Along with a few "thank you" comments, I got several that said, "yeah, but surely the hackers will bring this down." I’m here to tell you that this is a vain hope, and that it is not the hackers’ fault. PAST GLORIES The hacker mystique dates back to the late 80s and early 90s, when they won the first crypto war. And while the hackers deserve enduring credit for that victory, it is important to remember two things: 1. That was a much easier situation than the one we now face. 2. The community ...

A few days ago i received two envelopes in the mail that made my day. my wife & i had gone to the beach one weekend with our travel trailer. we'd done this many times before, but this time, when we came back from swimming, there were two tickets- one on the trailer, & one on the truck. Apparently the city had passed a new zoning law forbidding a combined length of 23 feet. the tickets were $40 each! 80 bucks? quite an expensive day at the beach. i went online & looked up the exact words of the statute, & found the citys zoning maps. our parking spot was in fact legal, because it was zoned 'open space', not 'residential' as the new parking law specified. ...

One of the most striking things about this year's political discourse (as if name-calling and wild accusations can be dignified with such a term) is that what used to be considered traditional and commonplace thinking is now labeled as extremism and bigotry. A few examples: If you believe that the U.S. Constitution means only what it actually says, you are an extremist who ought to be wearing a powdered wig. If you believe that marriage is exclusively the union of one man and one woman, you are a homophobe and a bigot. If you think people should not be allowed to break into our country illegally, then get free education, health care and jobs and to march in our streets to protest the ...

Treasury Shields Citigroup as Deletions Undercut Disclosure A Citi logo appears on a flag flying outside the Citigroup Inc. headquarters in New York. Photographer: Daniel Acker/Bloomberg Finance professor at the Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University Joseph Mason, seen here, said more openness concerning the causes of the crisis and the government’s response would help the economy recover. Economist Joseph Stiglitz: Put Corporate Criminals in Jail An institutionalized system of skewed incentives allowed Wall Street bankers and other corporate executives to gamble with America's wealth and then get away largely scot-free after the house of cards came tumbling down, plunging the U.S. into the worst economic crisis in decades and destroying trillions of dollars of wealth worldwide. That's the analysis of Joseph Stiglitz, an internationally renowned economist and winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in economics. (His latest book, Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy, is just out in paperback.) During a wide-ranging interview with DailyFinance ...

A civil rights complaint has been filed against a woman in Grand Rapids, Mich., who posted an advertisement at her church last July seeking a Christian roommate. The ad "expresses an illegal preference for a Christian roommate, thus excluding people of other faiths,” according to the complaint filed by the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan. "It's a violation to make, print or publish a discriminatory statement," Executive Director Nancy Haynes told Fox News. "There are no exemptions to that." Haynes said the unnamed 31-year-old woman’s case was turned over to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. Depending on the outcome of the case, she said, ...

Project Overview Can you say "Psychological Warfare?" I have a project and I need the help of like minded people. I will try to be brief. I have recorded an anti-government protest song. The style is country-rock, and the song is pretty direct. I need people to request it on radio stations. My goals are- 1. The short answer is, I want to influence the mass psychology of the entire nation. I want politicians and their staff to hear it and recognize that We the People do not like what they are doing, and I want all other government employees to hear it and recognize that they are NOT just ordinary Americans trying to earn a living, they are on the wrong side and we do not like what ...

Soros Gives $1 Million to Target Fox News George Soros repeatedly has denied allegations by Glenn Beck and others that he funds Media Matters. But on Wednesday, he said his donation is designed “to hold Fox News accountable for the false and misleading information they so often broadcast.” (AP Photo) Billionaire currency titan George Soros, long a patron of liberal political causes in the United States, is giving $1 million to Media Matters in what he says is an attempt to stop the growing popularity of Fox News. The money, Soros said, is designed purely to “to hold Fox News accountable for the false and misleading information they so often broadcast.” The donation ...

PARIS (AP) - Protesters blockaded Marseille's airport, Lady Gaga canceled concerts in Paris and rioting youths attacked police in Lyon on Thursday ahead of a tense Senate vote on raising the retirement age. A quarter of the nation's gas stations were out of fuel despite President Nicolas Sarkozy's orders to force open depots barricaded by striking workers. Gasoline shortages and violence on the margins of student protests have heightened the standoff between the government and labor unions who see retirement at 60 as a hard-earned right. New violence broke out in Lyon, as police chased rampaging youths who overturned a car and hurled bottles. Riot officers tried to subdue ...

The Rest of the Story The Bronfman Crime FamiliesBy Allan May The Purple Gang originated in Detroit. Dalitz, who once lived in Detroit and had family there, had connections to the Purple Gang but his main influence was in Cleveland. Born in Boston, Dalitz moved to Cleveland and used the name Maurice Davis so he wouldn't embarrass his family, who remained in Detroit and ran a legitimate laundry business. Dalitz's important status in the underworld was apparent when he was invited to the Atlantic City crime conference in 1929. The meeting, which coincided with Meyer Lansky's honeymoon, was the first movement toward a national crime syndicate. The theme of the ...

Uncovering the HiddenBronfman and the Mafia Sells Out the United States to Russia 7/2/1996 -- Bitterly, former Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion referred to Mussolini admirer Vladimir Jabotinsky, as "Vladimir Hitler". In the process leading to the establishment of the state of Israel, the faction of the Irgun ("The Organization"), linked to Mussolini-admirer Jabotinsky, was something which most Jews, worldwide, denounced in fearful whispers. The hard-core of the Irgun were fascitsts by profession, politically allied with Mussolini, strongly objecting to Adolf Hitler's anti-Semitism, but not Hitler's other fascists crimes. At the core, they were also ...

If ever I am tempted by the siren songs of my tribal past as a deep-fried, yellow-dawg Democrat, and begin to feel any faint, atavistic stirrings of sympathy for the old gang, I simply think of things like the scenario below, sketched last week by Johann Hari, and those wispy ghosts of partisanship past go howling back to the depths: Imagine if, an hour from now, a robot-plane swooped over your house and blasted it to pieces. The plane has no pilot. It is controlled with a joystick from 7,000 miles away, sent by the Pakistani military to kill you. It blows up all the houses in your street, and so barbecues your family and your neighbours until there is nothing left to bury but a few ...

It’s about time that Americans get over themselves and look to Latin America with a new eye. The changes that are happening to the nations of South America are astounding. Hugo Chavez is not the strongman dictator that the United States would want you to believe he is. Evo Morales is not the dictator that the U.S. State Department would like you to believe he is. The leaders of South America are a vibrant breath of fresh air and an example of what we here in the United States could become. It is no accident that left-wing governments have appeared in South America. The leaders of the US can only blame themselves for the rise of socialism to our south. Years of American imperialism and ...
