Christianity -- a Modest Defense
Post Date: 2010-06-10 12:02:05 by Turtle

Christianity - A Modest Defense I can recall so clearly those Sundays in my youth growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1950s. I attended a large Presbyterian church. I was one of the few who asked questions in Sunday School. And most of my questions were about the book of Matthew. I remember one Sunday school teacher in particular. He was a lawyer, and a professor at the University of Cincinnati Law school. At the tender age of 12 I had just read Matthew 23, the famous condemnation by Christ of Scribes and Pharisees. So I asked this teacher, "what is a Pharisee?" "I dunno." He did not even care enough to look it up and give me an answer in the following week! Ironic ...

My once-in-a-generation cut? The armed forces. All of them

We are safer than at any time since the Norman conquest. Yet £45bn is spent defending Britain against fantasy enemies I say cut defence. I don't mean nibble at it or slice it. I mean cut it, all £45bn of it. George Osborne yesterday asked the nation "for once in a generation" to think the unthinkable, to offer not just percentage cuts but "whether government needs to provide certain public services at all". What do we really get from the army, the navy and the air force beyond soldiers dying in distant wars and a tingle when the band marches by? Is the tingle worth £45bn, more than the total spent on schools? Why does Osborne ...

Have you ever been burned by somebody because they told you an outright lie? It can happen in your personal or business life – you’re on cloud nine when your girlfriend says she loves you, only to find out later she’s been cheating on you for months; a client says their business is solvent, but they end up bankrupt, and you lose a ton of money on an account. Wouldn’t it be great to avoid these situations by being able to tell right then and there if someone is lying to you? Well, based on research by behavioral scientists and the work and experience of FBI agents and police officers, a system has been developed to help people become human lie detectors. Below we ...

How Propaganda Works

How Propaganda Works by Bob Wallace "Once you base your whole life striving on a desperate lie, and try to implement that lie, you instrument your own undoing." - Ernest Becker, The Denial of Death. It's not hard to understand how propaganda works. You don't need a college degree, or to even to read any of those thick textbooks everybody hates. Everything relevant can be explained in one not-particularly-long article. And, I guarantee you, you must understand how propaganda targets you, to immunize yourself against the attempts. Propaganda works by appealing to our most base, animalistic instincts. It does not appeal to our better nature, although one of the purposes of it is to ...

Poster Comment:"From the film Kymatica. Our society is run by lawyers, our politicians are lawyers, they write our laws. Our judges are lawyers, our presidents are lawyers. They are above us, do you suppose they want you to understand the law? These are the witch doctors of the current age, ruling over us with their lawyer speak that we could never understand. We do understand though that this requires sacrificing the individual for the "system". In order to understand how to resist what is being forced upon us I think it is imperative that we educate ourselves to the multi-faceted system that is the source of our oppression. So many things we sign, and by doing so waive our ...

So, what exactly is a Freedom Outlaw?

“Freedom Outlaw.” The term came up here a few days ago. It’ll arise again and again on this blog. If you’ve been hanging out in my vicinity for a few years, you probably know what I mean by it. If not, you might be puzzled or even offended by the notion that people who believe in freedom are (or should be) criminals. Thought I’d stop this morning and define some terms. So this is mostly for people who haven’t heard it all before. A Freedom Outlaw is (loosely) somebody who cares so much about freedom that he or she will go after it regardless of any laws or regulations blocking the way. Will go after it personally. Not petition for it. Not write letters for ...

Suicide or Murder at Guantánamo?

On June 2 last year, the Pentagon announced that a Yemeni prisoner at Guantánamo, Mohammed al-Hanashi (also known as Muhammad Salih) had died, reportedly by committing suicide. He was the fifth reported suicide at Guantánamo, following three deaths on June 9, 2006, and another on May 30, 2007, and he was the sixth man to die at the prison, following the death, by cancer, of an Afghan prisoner, Abdul Razzaq Hekmati, on December 26, 2007. All of these deaths were, in one way or another, suspicious, except for Hekmati, a 68-year old Afghan, whose story, instead, hinted at medical neglect, and also revealed, on close examination, the callous cruelty of the regime at ...

In a country born out of political dissent, we watch our leaders in Washington slowly pass bills that label ordinary Americans as thought criminals and potential domestic terrorists for simply questioning the actions of their government.

The EPA can go to Hell, and I will go to Texas

Last week, the feds sent the Environmental Protection Agency out to harass the sovereign state of Texas. Texas needs to reclaim the spirit of Davy Crockett, when he famously proclaimed “you may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas”; and send the federal agency packing. Here’s why and how. EPA’s Goal is Centralization of Power By sending the EPA to Texas, the federal government’s goal is not environmental improvements. The goal is centralization of power. The tactic is to use the unelected bureaucrats of the EPA to increase Texas dependence on the federal government through arbitrary and economically crippling regulation. Refinery permits are just tools that the ...

Are Cameras the New Guns? The move to stop recording of police misconduct.

In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states (Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland), it is now illegal to record an on-duty police officer even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists. The legal justification for arresting the “shooter” rests on existing wiretapping or eavesdropping laws, with statutes against obstructing law enforcement sometimes cited. Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland are among the 12 states in which all parties must consent for a ...

Police arrest Census taker - Property Rights ~vs~ Federal Rights

A battle is brewing between the state and federal governments over a Census taker arrested in Puna for misdemeanor trespassing. The U.S. Attorney's office filed papers Thursday in federal court in Honolulu to take the case of 57-year-old Russell Haas out of 3rd District Court. That will pit the feds against local prosecutors. "I'm looking to have it kept in state court," county Deputy Prosecutor Christopher Bridges said Friday. Haas pleaded not guilty on April 8 to second-degree trespassing. He was arrested March 10 at 12:30 p.m. in in Hawaiian Acres, after a resident Haas says was an off-duty police officer allegedly refused to cooperate with the Census and called ...

Begin With Lone Wolves

by Tom Metzger All struggles start with lone wolves who eventually meld into a concerted effort when they gain enough power and financing. In the beginning is when such an endeavor is most vulnerable. Stalin operated as a train robber until he gained enough power to do otherwise. Hitler started with himself and seven others. Both succeeded in forming an organization due to the terrible economic conditions and anti government feelings in the public. It took both Stalin and Hitler many years to advance to a real organization with power. I only use these two as an example because of tactics. Tactics are tactics no matter who and why they are employed. I think many of the thoughts I express ...

Government is Morally Wrong

Government is morally wrong. The premise of government is that an "official" group of thugs is perfectly justified in stealing, killing and threatening people at the point of a gun to impose their value system on the entire population for their own gain. Anarchists reject such fallacious moral claims and affirm that no one should be able to monopolize force and use it to threaten an entire population. Whatever their specific position, anarchists hold that only by eliminating government will individuals be able to express their values in the way they see best, and by doing so effect a superior and progressive society. The moral comparison There are four main lines of argument ...

Ezra Pound on Money
Post Date: 2010-05-28 13:32:03 by Turtle

We're never far from money. We spend most of our time and energy in quest of money. But how did this thing become an intermediary between us and the world around us? Before money, we bartered. Why did money supplant barter and who is custodian of the money system? These questions are dangerous: they cost Ezra Pound twelve years. Pound was a victim of political persecution at the behest of financiers and their minions like Franklin Delano Roosevelt. These people feared Ezra because he asked “what is money for,” and came up with an inconvenient answer. Pound understood that money is ticket for exchange. People who make things can trade more easily with other people who make ...

The Misfortune of Feminism

It was in college that I first encountered feminism and realized it was not as it was portrayed. I had actually been somewhat sympathetic, believing then as I do now, in fairness. I did not find this “fairness” in feminism. Instead I realized it was founded by man-hating lesbians, and was dumbfounded to find they had conned straight women into feeling sorry for themselves and being hostile toward men. And, instead of it claiming that men and women were equals, it instead insisted women were the victims of oppressive men – of “patriarchy,” a word I still read even today among far leftists. These claims, as it true for all such claims, are based on the idea that ...

High schoolers outed for "Beat the Jew"

Students at a Southern California high school are getting an "F" in sensitivity and compassion after designing a game mocking the Holocaust. Their Facebook page the group "Beat The Jew" outlined the rules: A willing person, "the Jew" is blindfolded and brought to a point on Highway 111 in La Quinta. The other team, "the Nazis", is in cars and try to catch, tackle and capture "the Jew". "I cannot understand why they would have this kind of insensitivity, it's beyond my understanding, I'm profoundly disappointed," says La Quinta High School Principal Donna Salazar. Salazar says about 40 students are involved, and they ...

The Last Trench Source: Essays by Louis Beam Author: Louis Beam The Last Trench As they walked through the bodies strewn throughout the overran trenches, one officer could not help but comment on the composition of the dead laying everywhere: "Old men with silver locks lay dead, side by side with mere boys of thirteen or fourteen. It almost makes one sorry to have to fight against people who show such devotion for their homes and their country." Silver haired men lay across the bodies of thirteen-year-old children piled in clumps or scattered individually where a last desperate stand had been made. The blood of both meeting in one final offering to freedom, liberty and ...
