FBI details surge in death threats against lawmakers

I voted for you,” the caller said in a voice mail to Democratic Rep. Heath Shuler’s district office. “If you vote for that stimulus package, I’m gonna kill you. Simple as that.” The FBI says the caller was a 70-year-old resident of Shuler’s North Carolina district with a history of mental illness and a cache of guns. In the weeks before calling Shuler’s office, the FBI says, the caller beat and choked his wife. She told the FBI that she’d tried to clear her home of guns — and that she went to bed at night with a can of mace tucked under her pillow. When agents showed up at the man’s door, they asked him why he’d threatened to kill ...

Baby Steps

Baby Steps Paul Jacob Sunday, May 23, 2010 Back in college, decades ago, my political theory professor regaled his students with stories of the brilliant political analyses and insights of his favorite European socialist intellectuals. Abhorring socialism, I began to better appreciate my Mother’s oft-repeated challenge: “If everyone else jumps off a cliff, are you going to jump, too?” Ideas are wise or foolish, however, without regard to national origin. Americans can and have learned great concepts from folks in Europe and Asia and Africa. It’s called paying attention. We Homo sapiens do have an uncanny knack for imitation. Take Switzerland. The Swiss Confederation ...

Sheriff feared years earlier that Ohio man accused of killing 2 Ark. cops was dangerous

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — An Ohio man's resentment of authority and run-ins with the law was enough for a local sheriff to warn that he could be dangerous if confronted by law enforcement. Years later, the sheriff appears right: The man and his teenage son are suspected of fatally shooting two Arkansas police officers during a traffic stop before they died in a shootout. Jerry Kane Jr., 45, of Forest, Ohio, and his son Joseph Kane, believed to be 16, were killed during an exchange of gunfire with officers in a Walmart parking lot, Arkansas State Police said Friday. The shootings came about 90 minutes after West Memphis police Sgt. Brandon Paudert, 39, and Officer Bill Evans, 38, ...

Guns as Equalizers

Pistols, in the 19th Century, were called “equalizers” because they made the tiniest woman equal to the biggest man. I’m not even going to say I’m believer, because I don’t “believe” it’s true, no more than I believe 2+2=4. It just is true. I have known three women who were murdered. I did not know them personally. One was strangled by a serial killer a few weeks after I left my job and she was hired. She was a young little woman, and for that matter, the guy who killed her wasn’t that big. I could have taken him, which is why these guys kill the weaker, such as women. The other two were sisters, and I did meet their mother. They were raped ...

Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin'. Repairman Jack: the Slaugher of the Sheep

I am a fan of F. Paul Wilson’s “Repairman Jack” novels. Wilson s clearly a libertarian, and so is Repairman Jack. Jack lives “off the grid,” has no identity, and “fixes” things the bumblers in government cannot or won’t fix. And he does something that everyone should do: carry a concealed handgun. In his case, most of the time, it’s a Semmerling in an ankle holster. In the last novel of Wilson’s I read – “Hosts” – the action starts right at the beginning. Jack is riding a subway when some lunatic decides to slaughter dozens of people with his two 9mms, both with silencers. Shades of Colin Ferguson! The first words out ...

Home School, Sweet Home School Bill Murchison Monday, May 17, 2010 As I addressed a home school graduation exercise the other day, I thought -- more than once -- ah, good old human nature at work once more. It's what happens when institutions fail or give the distinct impression they're about to. Customers head for the exits: not all of them, maybe just a handful. Yet those who do flee, taking their hopes and their children with them, tend to be people of sharp and quick perception; the kind you want around as much and as long as possible. Their departure evacuates the institution in considerable degree of priceless qualities -- sense of mission, dedication to task, willingness to ...

LONDON (AP) - A British lawmaker was stabbed Friday during an advice session with his constituents, Labour Party officials said Friday. Stephen Timms, the member of Parliament for the constituency of East Ham and a former Treasury secretary, was being treated at the Royal London Hospital after the attack, a statement from the Labour Party said. Timms, 54, was taken to the Royal London Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. "He has received visitors and is in good spirits," the statement said. A spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police said a 21-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident. According to his website, Timms has ...

Every researcher, writer, and filmmaker who tackles the New World Order issue will suffer the unfortunate experience of running into people who are almost criminally uninformed, and this will happen on a regular basis. For a long time, our frustration was magnified by our inability to specifically define what it was that made these people the way they were. Were some just mentally inadequate, and unable to effectively process the facts? Were they so indoctrinated... Click for Full Text! Poster Comment:Interesting.

LIVING IN THE U.X.A. At the height of the Great Depression, a group of unemployed Oakland workers decided to take matters into their own hands. The system wasn’t working, so they set up their own system. Money was nearly worthless, so they decided to live by barter. They called themselves the Unemployed Exchange Association and they soon went on to write a remarkable chapter in American economic history. This is their story. Tonight at 10 (eastern), Deadliest Warrior brings you one of the most ferocious pre-gun battles we've seen to date: Aztec vs. Zande. Join Max Geiger in this week's Blood on the Sand for a look at why this is a battle for the ages. First off, thanks for checking out Jesse James and Al Capone last week, and I'm sorry to report that unlike Geoff, I won't be sharing any sweet vacation photos that relate to this episode. That said, this matchup, Aztec warrior vs. Zande warrior, is one of my favorites this season. It's got two ancient warriors wielding some of the most creative weaponry we've seen to date, and there's some great history behind each of them. This ...

Activists redefine GOP platform (Maine)

In a move that seemed to surprise many members of Maine's Republican Party, a group of tea party-style activists redefined the party platform at the convention Saturday. After the vote, in which a vocal majority supported a wholesale replacement of language worked on by the party establishment since at least January, a string of delegates congratulated Horatio "Ted" Cowan III, a retired marine electrician from Rockland who wrote the adopted amendment. "This is the first Republican organization to get realigned back to constitutional conservative values," said Blaine Richardson. "To me, as Maine goes, so goes the rest of the nation. With the national Tea Party ...
