Texan hosts arm against crime wave By Philip Sherwell in Houston (Filed: 27/08/2006) Hurricane Katrina may not have pounded Houston, but a year later the city is reeling from an ugly aftermath of the storm - a surging crime wave. The murder rate in the Texan city has soared by almost 20 per cent since 150,000 Katrina evacuees arrived in August last year. According to police statistics, they are involved - as victim or killer - in one of every five homicides. In the gun stores and on the shooting ranges of America's oil industry capital, business is booming as fearful locals take their defence into their own hands and buy concealed weapons licences that allow them to travel armed. ...
Keith Olberman on Rummy's Speech Post Date: 2006-08-31 11:18:33 by bluedogtxn

The man who sees absolutes, where all other men see nuances and shades of meaning, is either a prophet, or a quack. Donald H. Rumsfeld is not a prophet. Mr. Rumsfeld's remarkable speech to the American Legion yesterday demands the deep analysis--and the sober contemplation--of every American. For it did not merely serve to impugn the morality or intelligence -- indeed, the loyalty -- of the majority of Americans who oppose the transient occupants of the highest offices in the land. Worse, still, it credits those same transient occupants -- our employees -- with a total omniscience; a total omniscience which neither common sense, nor this administration's track record at home or abroad, ...
US General in Iraq Claims 'Great Progress' in Baghdad Security Clampdown Post Date: 2006-08-30 12:03:44 by Brian S

The top U.S. commander in the Middle East says a U.S.-Iraqi security clampdown in Baghdad is making great progress, and he says Iraq is far from civil war. General John Abizaid spoke to reporters Thursday in Baghdad. He said comments he made earlier this month that civil war was possible in Iraq have been misinterpreted. The general said he did not mean Iraq is close to civil war. In the latest violence, a car bombing in Baghdad killed two people, and a bomb north of the capital in Baquba killed at least two policemen. The U.S. military says three American soldiers have died in attacks over the past 24 hours in Baghdad and south of the capital. On Wednesday, a top U.S. military ...
COURAGE AND RESISTANCE IN OAXACA AND MEXICO CITY Post Date: 2006-08-30 08:01:14 by Stephen Lendman

Courage and Resistance in Oaxaca and Mexico City - by Stephen Lendman It began on May 15 this year when teachers belonging to the 70,000 strong National Union of Education Workers in Oaxaca, Mexico took to the streets for the first time to press their demands to the state government to address their long-neglected needs. They included restructuring teachers' salaries, improving the deplorable educational infrastructure forcing teachers to conduct classes in laminated cardboard shacks, a lack of books and other educational materials and providing food for the many impoverished children who come to school each day hungry. After Chiapas, Oaxaca is the poorest of Mexico's 31 states, each of ...

I wish she did a better recording of this. I am writing her to ask that she do so. Great song, bad recording. Oh my god this is our life We're living like their victims Living like the captives Tired of sitting thinking dark thoughts Contemplating motion Time to become active Do you know that your lies Burn as bright as the bombs You're dropping on the innocent? And we've got something good to show you And you don't wanna miss this You don't wanna miss this one How will you answer the questions How will you defend The murders you've instructed We know there are many reasons People take to killing Reasons they've constructed Will you try to deny All the damage you've done Or will ...

Hitlerian Totalitarianism on the Home Front by Karen De Coster Opponents of an absolute state often wonder how far the American people will go in allowing Hitlerian totalitarianism into every single aspect of their lives. When will they stop being compliant little beings, and instead, stand up and fight for their right to exist unencumbered by one totalitarian measure after another? The government intimidates the people daily via the reporting of so-called terror plots and flashing its danger alerts. The media frenzy that follows gives us the caveat that we are all in immediate danger from assorted hazardous weapons such as killer bras, sandal soles, eye compact, lipstick, and ...
Celebrating Irrelevancy! Post Date: 2006-08-29 11:07:56 by Pandora

Lying here in my motel room recovering from my 4th trip to the ER in a little over two weeks, and two surgeries, I found out from the Waco Tribune (Sunday, August 27) that I have become "irrelevant" to the anti-war movement. At first, I was a little defensive about that statement. I didn't really think that the article was fair, because in the last two weeks, I have been really ill and I have spent more time in the hospital and recovering from being in the hospital than I have not. Camp Casey has been limping along in my absence doing some huge things (like promoting the GI Rights Hotline at Ft. Hood and protesting Karl Rove and counter-recruitment) that haven't been covered by ...

Aug. 29, 2006 -- Reporting today from Copenhagen. Three sole peace demonstrators maintain a lonely vigil outside the Parliament (Folketing) building in Copenhagen. They are protesting the first aggressive military action Denmark has taken in 150 years -- its joining with the United States in the military occupation of Iraq. They have been at the Parliament since October 19, 2001 and today marks day number 1775 since they -- along with an eternal flame -- have reminded Danish lawmakers and the public of the Danish government's culpability in joining the Bush and Blair administrations in the genocidal war in Iraq. Day 1775 for the lonely Danish Peace Watch outside the Parliament in ...

Cuba Under Castro - by Stephen Lendman Having just turned 80 on August 13 and undergone major surgery for what may have been stomach cancer at the end of July, a transitional time may be near in Cuba with Fidel Castro Ruz beginning to hand over power to his brother Raul and/or others in the months ahead. It passed without irony or mention of imperial arrogance in a brief front page comment in the August 19th issue of the Wall Street Journal that the US won't invade Cuba but a "dynastic succession" is not acceptable. It would have been too much to expect the Journal to have noted that same type succession happened in the US in 2000 and 2004 and in elections exposed and documented ...

Professor cleared in assault of child Judge cautions parents should let children resolve their own petty disputes Published on August 24, 2006 By Kate Leckie News-Post Staff FREDERICK -- Squabbles between children are perhaps best left on the playground -- or refereed by school officials, a judge said Wednesday in Frederick County District Court. Judge Janice Rodnick Ambrose delivered that message as a postscript to her acquittal of Tracy Parker, 38, an assistant professor at Frederick Community College. Charged with conspiracy to commit second-degree assault and contributing to the condition of a child, the legal term for contributing to delinquency, Ms. Parker could have been jailed if ...

Last week, I made my first trip to South Lebanon since the war began. Having traveled a fifth of the world, and been present during wars in Iraq, Palestine, and New York, I can honestly say that I have never seen such complete devastation in my entire life. The only thing that even comes close are the pictures Ive seen from World War II. Much of South Lebanon simply lies in ruin. In the South, Israeli warplanes occasionally break the sound barrier, rattling people as they fly off on God knows what missions. Israeli drones constantly fly overhead. The low, insistent hum of their engines serves as a continual reminder that Lebanon is not yet safe.Bombed out gas stations and ...

ALTERNATIVES TO THE COLLAPSED WTO DOHA ROUND TALKS Post Date: 2006-08-23 08:24:58 by Stephen Lendman

Alternatives To the Collapsed WTO Doha Round Talks - by Stephen Lendman On July 24, 2006, World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Pascal Lamy was forced to halt the five years of negotiating of the so-called Fourth WTO Ministerial Doha Round that began in Doha, Qatar in November, 2001 and ended (for now, at least) in Geneva, Switzerland. The talks had been ongoing to strike a trade deal but broke down because the US, as usual, demanded all take and little give in return expecting it could strong-arm developing nations to accept whatever it proposed as it's always been able to do in the past. No longer, apparently, as nations with growing clout like Brazil, India and others ...

United StatesThe 'New' New Orleans Blues By Sheerly Avni Aug 22, 2006, 09:07 Spike Lee's HBO doc about Hurricane Katrina is a haunting and expertly told story that shows how little our government truly cares about many of its citizens. In one of several remarkable scenes from Spike Lee's new four-hour documentary, "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem for New Orleans in Four Acts," a young man who sat out the flood in the hot and stenching Superdome surprises us with a recollection of grace. During a particularly desperate moment in the sewer--no water, no food, no help in sight--someone took charge. "There was this brother named Radio," he tells us, "...and he ...

Is It Time To Get a Divorce from America? By Ezekiel Jones Aug 22, 2006, 04:40 Editors Note: This article was received August 22 from Ezekiel Jones with the following introduction: Below is a submission for Axis of Logic that would make a nice response to Cathy Garger's screed against Michael Ruppert. I left the U. S. in 2005, in part because of what was happening to the country politically. In my view, things have seriously deteriorated since then, to the point that I feel obligated to urge people to leave, or at least make preparations to leave, before it's too late. I have been amazed by people like Ms. Garger who react so virulently against those who suggest that making a Plan B ...

By Jan Lamprecht: http://www.africancrisis.org Take note that I am originally from Zimbabwe and now live in S.Africa. This website is about the plain and simple fact that White people are on their way out of Africa, and I feel that White people need to be defended or else S.Africa will end up just like Zimbabwe, and all the rest. Take note, I never took part in any politics in S.Africa until Robert Mugabe started driving White farmers off the land in Zim. That was the key event which brought about a big change in my mind, and that is why I started this website and wrote my book. To me, Robert Mugabe's actions, and some of the actions of the ANC are to me, tantamount to a DECLARATION OF ...

The Great Deception: The propaganda that we pay for By Dr. Abbas Bakhtiar Aug 20, 2006, 17:05 What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. (Bertrand Russell) So it is with Messrs. Bush and Blair which have acted time and again on the flimsiest of evidence to reshape Middle East ...

London Daily Mail: Flight 93 'Was Shot Down' By ROWLAND MORGAN The heart-thumping moment came when when passengers on board one of the hijacked 9/11 jets fought back against the ruthless fanatics hellbent on crashing the plane into the heart of America. Jumping out of their seats to a rallying cry of Lets roll!, they charged towards the front of the Boeing 757 and began smashing down the cockpit door to reach the hijackers at the controls. Amid the desperate commotion, the plane rolled violently from right to left and pitched up and down as the rogue pilots tried to throw the passengers beyond the door off balance. As the struggle continued, the cockpit voice recorder ...
