MT... The European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday ordered Russia to pay 20,000 euros ($23,442) in damages to relatives of murdered investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, saying it had failed to carry out an effective investigation into her killing. Politkovskaya, a critic of the Kremlin, was shot dead in her apartment block in Moscow in 2006 in a killing opposition leaders blamed on the Kremlin. Russian authorities denied any role in her death. In response to the decision by the Strasbourg-based court, the Russian Justice Ministry said on its website that the ruling had not taken effect and could be appealed against by the ministry within three months. Body Language Expert Shreds Media’s Entire ‘Putin Was in Charge’ Narrative By Cillian Zeal July 17, 2018 at 8:27am Was Vladimir Putin the one in charge at Monday’s press conference with President Donald Trump at their Monday summit in Helsinki? Many people would say yes. But one body language expert says that may not have been the case. Regarding the opening press conference between the two leaders, the U.K. Express reached out to someone to read the tea leaves (so to speak) in Trump and Putin’s posture — and it’s something that’s going to have a lot of Democrats furious. “Judi James, author and body language expert, told Express.co.uk the ...

Is Hungary Experiencing a Policy-Induced Baby Boom?

In 2015, the government of Hungary announced a major new policy: families would be given generous subsidies to buy or build new homes, and the subsidies would scale up based on their marital status and the number of children they had. This “Family Housing Allowance Program,” or CSOK (the abbreviation of the program’s Hungarian name), gives a maximum benefit to married couples with three or more children, equivalent to a $36,000 grant to buy a new home, alongside a major value-added tax deduction for each home, and a capped-interest loan for part of the home value. {snip} Given that the average salary in Hungary is only around $11,000 to $15,000 per year, an ...

The offer was that U.S. forces will leave some of its key military bases in its military occupation of Syria, if all of Irans forces, which Syrias Government had invited into Syria in order to help conquer the tens of thousands of jihadists who are trying to overthrow and replace Syrias Government, leave all of Syria, and if Iran also stops supporting Hezbollah in Lebanon, and stops supporting Shiites in Iraq. Here is the key part of Magniers report: ...

PressTV... The Turkish government’s plan to purchase the Russian S-400 systems would give the advanced air defense shield, used by “known foes” of NATO, deep insight into the US radar-evading F-35 fighter jets arriving in increasing numbers in Europe, the top American Air Force general in Europe warns. “Anything that an S-400 can do that affords it the ability to better understand a capability like the F-35 is certainly not to the advantage of the coalition,” said General Tod Wolters, who is also the NATO Allied Air Commander, on Sunday. The US general, who was in the UK for the 2018 Chief of the Air Staff’s Air Power Conference in London, further said that ...

Watch Dick Cheney enthusiastically sign a ‘waterboard kit’ by Avi Selk July 9, 2018 After a year of being ineligible, “Game of Thrones” leads the Emmy nomination pack with 22 nods. Here’s what you need to know about the other notable nominees. (Taylor Turner, Nicki DeMarco/The Washington Post) When you first see the clip — and it’s a very short clip — it almost looks as if Richard B. Cheney is cradling a baby. Maybe it’s the way he’s smiling at the bundle, balanced on his lap in a comfy-looking armchair. There’s warmth in that smile. A fraction of a second later you realize, no, that’s not a baby he’s holding. ...

On July 1, 2015, The First Church of Cannabis opened its doors in Indiana, due, mostly, to the state’s newly introduced Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). A week later, it was suing the state to allow churchgoers (called “cannataerians”) to smoke marijuana during religious ceremonies. Three years later, a judge ruled that the church cannot play the “religious freedom” card to circumvent state drug laws. The First Church of Cannabis is the brainchild of Bill Levin, who also serves as its Grand Poobah. Members follow a set of guidelines known as the Deity Dozen. They advise people to be nice to one another, help those in need, enjoy nature, etc. And smoke ...

The Saudi-led coalition, unable to secure control of the strategic port city of Hodeida, has recently flooded the cities and towns surrounding Hodeida with foreign and indigenous mercenaries, hoping to bring the port city to its knees by taking control of the surrounding region. Backil al-Shimi is one of the thousands of Yemenis from the Amran governorate that volunteered to join a group of Yemeni civilians fighting alongside Ansar Allah (Houthi) fighters this week. “I am not ready to see my sons die from famine or malnutrition” al-Shimi, a father of eight told MintPress. Hailing from the village of al Shim, 45 km south Sanaa, al-Shimi participated in a fierce battle to retake ...

From the authors of The South was Right! comes what one historian calls one of the most important and original histories of the Southern people. Punished with Poverty tells the unvarnished story of the intentional policy of economic devastation and exploitation of the South which has affected all Southerners, both black and white, long after the close of the “Civil War” and “Reconstruction.” In fact, the sad legacy of these punitive policies continues to this very day. The over-arching theme of Southern history is not Race, as is conventionally stated, but Poverty—poverty not due to the South’s shortcomings, but imposed on them by the system under which they ...

Here it comes, the moment we’ve been waiting for, when Trump and Putin meet in Helsinki to officially launch the Destruction of Democracy, and very possibly the Apocalypse itself. That’s right, folks, once again, it appears we’re looking at the end of everything, because according to the corporate media, on July 16, 2018, Trump is probably going to disband NATO so that Putin can invade the Baltic states, then Germany, then the rest of Europe, and then presumably order an all-out thermonuclear strike on the United States, which will pretty much end civilization as we know it. Or perhaps the plan is to do away with NATO, withdraw all American troops from Poland, let Putin ...

After pulling out money to pay for food last week at Surfside in Northwest Washington, customers Aaron Bateman and Roxann Barr hear from cashier Obed Amaya that the restaurant does not accept cash. (Jahi Chikwendiu/The Washington Post) Aaron Bateman pulled out a few bills to pay for a taco lunch in the nation’s capital. To his surprise, his money was no good in the city where money is printed. Surfside, a 24-hour Mexican eatery in Dupont Circle, doesn’t take cash. No cash means no register for robbers to empty out, no bills for workers to slip into their pockets and no change-counting holding up lines. The global cashless movement has reached Washington, where a growing number ...

London: Landlord Renames Pub “The Trump Arms” to Support President’s UK Visit

Ever since President Trump announced his upcoming visit to the UK, London – Europe’s most pious Islamic stronghold – has been in a state of constant stress. The local press have gone into full anti-Drumpf mode, shocked that this literal reincarnation of Hitler would dare visit a progressive, tolerant caliphate like Britain. Tens of thousands of liberals plan to flock to Trafalgar Square next week, eager to protest the man the establishment told them to hate. And the Paki mayor, Sadiq Khan, authorized the flight of an unflattering Trump balloon across the city’s skies. It’s all been a bit wild. But London isn’t completely gone. The 40% white capital is still ...

The Yankee Problem In American History by Clyde Wilson It is true that we are completely under the saddle of Massachusetts and Connecticut, and that they ride us very hard, cruelly insulting our feelings, as well as exhausting our strength and substance. ~ Thomas Jefferson, 1798 [S]eeing that we must have somebody to quarrel with, I had rather keep our New England associates for that purpose, than to see our bickerings transferred to others. They are circumscribed within such narrow limits, and their population so full, their numbers will ever be the minority, and they are marked, like the Jews, with such a perversity of character, as to constitute, from that circumstance, the natural ...

The New Normal: Our Evil Gift to a Generation Which Didn’t Deserve It

“Nothing,” economist Milton Friedman once observed, “is so permanent as a temporary government program.” And nothing makes a government’s programs – or, more importantly, changes in its core values – more permanent than the loss of collective memory that comes with generational changes. We’re hitting a big one soon. It worries me. Next year, the first generation of Americans who weren’t yet born on September 11, 2001 will come of age. They’ll graduate high school. They’ll get jobs. They’ll vote. What they will not do, because they can’t, is remember: Remember a time before the 9/11 attacks, or the changes in American ...

The fact that the US is facing a profound crisis, possibly the worst one in its history, is accepted by most observers, except maybe the most delusional ones. Most Americans definitely know that. In fact, if there is one thing upon which both those who supported Trump and those who hate him with a passion can agree on, it would be that his election is a clear proof of a profound crisis (I would argue that the election of Obama before also had, as one of its main causes, the very same systemic crisis). When speaking of this crisis, most people will mention the deindustrialization, the drop in real income, the lack of well-paid jobs, healthcare, crime, immigration, pollution, education, and ...

Camera Catches UFC Hall of Famer Laughing as He Pins Drunk Jerk Trying To Fight Him By Benjamin Arie July 5, 2018 at 4:46pm You’ve probably heard the saying: “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.” The point of the tongue-in-cheek phrase is simple. Actions have consequences, and whether it’s trying to block traffic with your body or pointing a gun at police officers, the results of those incredibly stupid decisions are pretty predictable. Matt Serra knows a few things about “winning prizes,” but his came more from hard work than stupidity. He’s a well-known name within UFC mixed-martial arts fighting and won the welterweight championship in 2007. ...

Guardian... Reducing plastics when shopping for food, toiletries and travel products should be easy – so why is it so difficult? Is plastic-free living only truly accessible to those with a significant disposable income? Photograph: DutchScenery/Getty Images/iStockphoto A few months ago, my partner and I went snorkelling off the coast of Indonesia. We dove off tiny deserted islands and swam in the deep with giant manta rays, but what I remember most vividly about that trip was not the stunning coral or dazzling array of colourful, curious fish; it was the sheer amount of garbage in the water. Shopping bags, plastic cups, toothpaste tubes, orange peel, all manner of human debris ...
