‘Worst Bush-era policies’ becoming the ‘new normal’: ACLU Post Date: 2010-07-30 06:24:35 by Ada

From the point of view of civil libertarians, the Obama administration has been an exercise in frustration, with every hopeful sign followed by failures to live up to its own promises. The ACLU has just issued a report (pdf), titled "Establishing a New Normal: National Security, Civil Liberties, and Human Rights Under the Obama Administration," which focuses on this pattern of inconsistency. "The administration has displayed a decidedly mixed record," explains ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romaro, "resulting, on a range of issues, in the very real danger that the Obama administration will institutionalize some of the most troublesome policies of the previous ...

Statement by Governor Jan Brewer on SB 1070July 28, 2010 This fight is far from over. In fact, it is just the beginning, and at the end of what is certain to be a long legal struggle, Arizona will prevail in its right to protect our citizens. I am deeply grateful for the overwhelmingly support we have received from across our nation in our efforts to defend against the failures of the federal government. I have consulted with my legal counsel about our next steps. We will take a close look at every single element Judge Bolton removed from the law, and we will soon file an expedited appeal at the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. For anyone willing to ...

The people of Afghanistan keep losing their trust in government because of corruption Pictures of prisoners being tormented in Abu Ghraib led to a tidal wave of revulsion against the US occupation of Iraq. The release of the vast archive of US military documents on Afghanistan is not likely to have the same explosive impact, but the sheer nastiness of the conflict is vividly conjured by the cumulative effect of thousands of uncensored reports from the frontline. The "Afghan Files" explain why the Kabul government is getting weaker, despite the fact that the US now has over 90,000 troops fighting 28,000 Taliban at a cost of $300bn (£190bn) over the last nine years. And ...

Its a sign of the New American times that even when we know we dont have cogent grounds to continue our woebegone wars, we cant invent compelling reasons to end them. In September 2009, President Obama caved to Pentagon demands to send more troops to the Bananastans* even though nobody in the Department of Defense could tell him what theyd do with the extra troops. This was before Obama fired Gen. David McKiernan as Bananastan commander to make way for Gen. Stan McChrystal, who was fired to make way for Gen. David Petraeus, whom Obama should have fired the second he took office, along with Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs chairman Mike Mullen, and the ...

May 19, 2000/14 Iyar 5760, Vol. 52, No.37 Defamation row Hefty verdict sends message of responsibility J.J. GOLDBERG Special to Jewish News Anti-Defamation League director Abe Foxman likes to tell stories about people he meets while traveling. They ask him what he does. He says he runs an agency that defends Jews. Their response, typically, is astonishment: "Really? Jews need defending?" Foxman's point is that Jews are losing their underdog image as they win increasing acceptance in America. This is one of those good news-bad news messages, particularly for the folks charged with wielding the machinery of Jewish power. It's easier than ever to throw your weight ...

Woman 2, thugs 0 after home invasion Oklahoma break-in turns deadly when 'victim' pulls gun and fires That was what Linda Smith (a pseudonym) was thinking after two thugs broke into her Oklahoma apartment. One was holding a weapon (she initially thought it was a knife but it turned out to be a screwdriver) at her throat, and the other was pacing back and forth while holding her purse and demanding her money and valuables. She screamed, and was told if she screamed again, she'd be dead. She was doing as police recommend in robberies comply with a robber's demands. But her Lady Smith & Wesson .38 special, which she carries by permit, was hidden in her purse ...
Still not illegal to film police: New York Rep. Towns brings the issue to Congress Post Date: 2010-07-25 20:42:52 by Artisan

Rep. Edolphus Ed Towns is a 14- term member of the U.S. House of Representatives in New York's 10th District. He has a Masters Degree in social work and is an ordained Baptist minister. On July 20th, Towns introduced Resolution 298, affirming the public's right to film police. In his press release, Towns briefly referred to an incident in New York where police beat up a man then falsely charged him with a crime; the man was acquitted after videotape of the beating came to light. (Incidentally, that video has been featured on my youtube channel for years, and has almost 200,000 views. See 'Cops beat the hell out of handicapped man, try to frame him'). Towns ...
More Rich Americans Renounce U.S. Citizenship for Lower Taxes Post Date: 2010-07-24 14:57:31 by Ada

More Americans are renouncing U.S. citizenship for tax reasons. A U.S.-born resident of Ireland recently came into some money after he and his wife sold a farm they inherited from her parents. Instead of enjoying his windfall, the man is furious at the Internal Revenue Service for penalizing him for running afoul of the agency's confusing regulations regarding the reporting of income from foreign bank accounts. He is so mad, according to his attorney, Jane Bruno, that he's considering renouncing his U.S. citizenship. While such a move is drastic, it's also becoming increasingly common. In fact, so many people are eager to renounce their U.S. citizenship for tax reasons, that ...

In this video, Minister Farrakhan exposes the Rothschilds, Warburgs, central banks, and corrupt government politics. He discusses how the Rothschilds and Warburgs loaned money to Hitler to help fund the war even though they were Jewish themselves. He discusses anti-sematism and how governments have been taken over by international banking institutions. RENO, Nev. Two people found dead in a home that burned in an upscale Reno neighborhood had heavily fortified the foreclosed house, apparently anticipating the sheriff's deputies who came to evict them, police said Wednesday. An investigation continued into the cause of death of the two people whose bodies were removed from the charred rubble Wednesday morning and taken to the Washoe County medical examiner's office for an autopsy. They have not been positively identified but were believed to be Therese Christenson, 83, and her son, Gary "Axel" Christenson, 46, who had lived for decades in the house that was sold at a foreclosure auction in June. Will America’s Police Become Federales? More centralization of power. Post Date: 2010-07-22 16:47:03 by F.A. Hayek Fan

Police unions across America are moving closer to being federalized. The Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act of 2009 was reintroduced in the Senate by Majority Leader Harry Reid on April 12, where it currently awaits debate. The act is part of a supplemental appropriations bill meant to fund military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. If passed, the act would place first responders (police, firemen, paramedics) under federal union regulations. Control would be removed from state and local authorities except in places with fewer than 5,000 people or with fewer than 25 full-time first responders. In effect the act seeks to nullify important aspects of the Taft-Hartley Act of ...

Chavez Warns of US Military Escalation in Costa Rica Post Date: 2010-07-21 15:18:55 by Rotara

Against the will of the Costa Rican congress, President Obama recently sent a force of 7,000 troops, 200 helicopters, and 46 warships into the country. When push comes to shove, the political machinery in Costa Rica is subservient to U.S. government and corporate interests. Nevertheless, there are many in Costa Rica who are declaring that the agreement is a violation of their national sovereignty and is unconstitutional. Inside Costa Rica - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned Sunday of increased international tensions over the military escalation by the United States and its allies around the world. "There are highly alarming elements: the military exercises that the South ...
Race Card Fraud Post Date: 2010-07-21 06:13:16 by Ada

Credit card fraud is a serious problem. But race card fraud is an even bigger problem. Playing the race card takes many forms. Judge Charles Pickering, a federal judge in Mississippi who defended the civil rights of blacks for years and defied the Ku Klux Klan back when that was dangerous, was depicted as a racist when he was nominated for a federal appellate judgeship. No one even mistakenly thought he was a racist. The point was simply to discredit him for political reasons -- and it worked. This year's target is the Tea Party. When leading Democrats, led by a smirking Nancy Pelosi, made their triumphant walk on Capitol Hill, celebrating their passage of a bill in defiance of ...

Tea Party Express leader Mark Williams kicked out over 'Colored People' letter Post Date: 2010-07-19 15:15:08 by X-15

Racism is tearing the Tea Party movement apart. The National Tea Party Federation has expelled a prominent activist group, the Tea Party Express, because it wouldn't rebuke and fire one of its leaders for writing an offensive blog post. Mark Williams, a California radio host who is leading protests in New York against a proposed mosque near Ground Zero and has drawn Sarah Palin to his rallies, had previously called the President an "Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug" and said Muslims were "animals" who worship "a monkey god." But when he posted a satirical letter this week from "the Colored People" to President Lincoln about how little they ...
Tollway agency vows to boost billing (Texas) Post Date: 2010-07-19 13:48:51 by X-15

The North Texas Tollway Authority acknowledges it is losing revenue by failing to collect tolls from too many of its customers and is searching for a way to increase collections. The NTTA uses about 2,000 cameras to monitor its highways, and yet one out of every three drivers without a TollTag is never identified and never billed. In the first three months of 2010, about 15 percent of NTTA customers used its roads without a TollTag. "We can't accept this," NTTA Chairman Paul Wageman said. "We need the revenue that we're losing, and we owe it to our paying customers to do everything we can to reduce those numbers." He said the authority will keep working to ...

When Booker, who was being processed on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, didn't obey, he was held down, hit with electric shocks and then placed facedown in a holding cell, according to two inmates who watched it unfold. Booker never got up. He was pronounced dead later that morning. "I've never seen anything happen like that before in my life," said John Yedo, 54, who was being processed on a charge of destruction of property and said he witnessed the scene. "What ...
