Charlie Wilson's Peace: Former Rep. Who Armed Mujahideen Calls for Withdrawal Before War in Afghanistan Becomes Another Vietnam Post Date: 2009-10-08 15:37:04 by Horse

Hidden away in the Scranton Times-Tribune "Arts and Living" section Tuesday was a bombshell from former Democratic Representative of Texas Charlie Wilson. The man whose adopted mission to save Afghanistan from the Soviet incursion in the 1980s spawned the notion of "Afghan freedom fighters," a book and a Hollywood movie now says we need to get the hell out of Dodge. In an interview with the Pennsylvania paper, Wilson said he advocates a "calculated withdrawal" of American troops from the country, "rather than lose a lot of soldiers and treasure." On the eighth anniversary of the beginning of the war in Afghanistan and during the heated debate in ...
American troops in Afghanistan losing heart, say army chaplains [Full Thread] Post Date: 2009-10-08 09:57:15 by Horse

American soldiers serving in Afghanistan are depressed and deeply disillusioned, according to the chaplains of two US battalions that have spent nine months on the front line in the war against the Taleban. Many feel that they are risking their lives and that colleagues have died for a futile mission and an Afghan population that does nothing to help them, the chaplains told The Times in their makeshift chapel on this fortress-like base in a dusty, brown valley southwest of Kabul. The many soldiers who come to see us have a sense of futility and anger about being here. They are really in a state of depression and despair and just want to get back to their ...

Wake: Vote likely will reshape schools By Thomas Goldsmith - Staff Writer RALEIGH -- Update: 9:15 p.m. Wake Countys public schools could be headed for a historic remake as candidates critical of the current board and its approach to school diversity swept three districts in Tuesdays election, and a fourth candidate led in race that likely will end in a runoff. If seen as a referendum on the boards policies on diversity, the election showed that the voters who turned out in the four districts at stake decided in large numbers to reject the status quo. The candidates who won outright won by an average of more than 22 percentage points. What I think really came ...

(10-02) 07:22 PDT Concord, N.H. (AP) -- A New Hampshire woman has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for amassing an arsenal of weapons at her fortress-like home after she and her husband were convicted of tax evasion. Elaine Brown was convicted with her husband in July of plotting to kill federal agents during a nine-month standoff at their Plainfield home. She was sentenced Friday. Her lawyer had asked for a 30-year sentence, arguing that she is an exceptional woman who was motivated by firmly held convictions rather than anger or greed. Prosecutors asked for at least 41 years. The Browns, who insist the federal income tax is unconstitutional, holed up in their hilltop home ...

Politics as a War Against Life Post Date: 2009-10-02 06:38:46 by Ada

Even the most piddling life is of momentous consequence to its owner. ~ James Wolcott "Good morning, and here are the lies your government would like to have you believe today!" A friend of mine, who worked for an all-news radio station a number of years ago, told me of his temptation to go on the air one morning with such a greeting. While such words would be refreshing to hear today, they would be passé in this age of "The Daily Show," YouTube, "The Colbert Report," and other sources that have discovered that the best way to satirize absurdity is to factually report same. The late stand-up philosopher, George Carlin, was fond of saying that he ...

I thought we might listen to it again on the Eve of Destruction. It looks to me like Israel will not get diplomatic support for an attack on Iran but that hasn't stopped them yet from committing atrocities and starting wars.

Christopher Donovan on Why We WriteChristopher Donovan One White Mans Scream Out Across the Internet" I write because I cant stand whats happening to whites. Its personal and its political. Its as small as the chicken bones strewn in the gutter of the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, and its as big as the future of the United States and the rest of the West. Its about the kind of world my white children will grow up in. Its everywhere I look, so its no use trying to avert my eyes. I hate what I see, and I have to scream. If we as whites are lobsters in a slow-boiling kettle, Im sensing the heat. I am a ...
Health Care Overhaul and Mandatory Coverage Stir States’ Rights Claims Post Date: 2009-09-29 20:45:00 by Horse

ST. PAUL In more than a dozen statehouses across the country, a small but growing group of lawmakers is pressing for state constitutional amendments that would outlaw a crucial element of the health care plans under discussion in Washington: the requirement that nearly everyone buy insurance or pay a penalty. Approval of the measures, the lawmakers suggest, would set off a legal battle over the rights of states versus the reach of federal power an issue that is, for some, central to the current health care debate but also one that has tentacles stretching into many other matters, including education and drug policy. Opponents of the measures and some constitutional scholars ...

Candidate Raffles Off AK-47 to Launch Campaign Greenville (The Greenville News) -- A Greenville man plans to launch his political campaign for adjutant general Saturday by giving away an AK-47 assault rifle. Dean Allen, 58, said he will give away the rifle in a free sweepstakes open to all. He said it's his way of celebrating the Second Amendment and showing solidarity against gun-rights opponents. The winner will receive a gift certificate, Allen said. To take possession of the gun, the winner will have to pass an FBI background check, show identification and fill out federal paperwork, he said. "I'm not worried about people that legally own weapons," Allen said. ...

. Dear Congresswoman Schakowsky: It is an age-old tactic, when one cannot refute statements with facts, to attempt to discredit the witness. I just posted this:Elizabeth Warren: "I'm Not Hearing the Plan" by Government to Fix the Economy I decided to post this as a separate essay. Barack Obama is not functioning as a President. He is reading prepared teleprompter messages written by other people. None of the plans being put forward ranging from health care to Afghanistan to the Bailout are designed to work. My proposal will unite Obama's voters who want his campaign promises to work with those of us who opposed his policies from Day One. My plan is that at all future protests we demand Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod resign and force Barack Obama to become President. And, since, Obama has only had one meeting ...

G-20 opponents, police clash on Pittsburgh streets By DANIEL LOVERING and MICHAEL RUBINKAM (AP) 2 hours ago PITTSBURGH Police threw canisters of pepper spray and smoke at anarchists protesting the Group of 20 summit Thursday after some marchers responded to calls to disperse by rolling trash bins and throwing rocks. The march turned chaotic at just about the same time that President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama arrived for a meeting with leaders of the world's major economies. The clashes began after several hundred protesters, many advocating against capitalism, tried to march from an outlying neighborhood toward the convention center where the summit is ...
