ATHENS, Greece Riot police fired tear gas at farmers Monday to prevent them from driving their tractors to the Greek capital to demand government financial help. At least two people, including an opposition socialist PASOK party deputy, were hurt in the scuffles at the port of Piraeus outside Athens. Greek farmers have protested for two weeks over low prices for their products, using tractors to block border crossings and highways across the country while demanding financial help from the government. The government last month promised euro500 million ($645 million) of help for agriculture, but many farmers have complained the amount is too small. About 1,000 farmers, local mayors ...

BY ZLATI MEYER FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER January 30, 2009 A Detroit woman and her seven children ages 9-18 are suing the Detroit Police Department for $15 million, because they allege officers attacked them without provocation in their home earlier this month. Tasha Flowers said Thursday that approximately 14 police officers barged into her home in the 19000 block of Shrewsbury about 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 3 without a search warrant, demanding to know where drugs and guns were. After she explained she didn't have any, she said they twisted her arm and tried to handcuff her, while her children and two of their friends were there. The following day, a police officer came back ...

Turtle's ex had a five-year-old Honda Pilot with 80,000 miles on it, but wanted a new one. So she haggled with the dealer and after the trade-in paid $20,000 for her barnd-new Pilot. However, she is so angry with the banks getting bailouts from her taxpayer money, and including the fact they raised her interest rate to 25%, cut her limit, and told her too bad when she complained, she quit paying her credti card bills and negotiated a settlement for 50% of what she owned. So she essentially got her new Pilot for free.
"Camps": We are not "good Germans." We will not acquiesce in our own enslavement. Post Date: 2009-01-30 09:12:10 by PSUSA

Pete has a post here that everyone needs to read. Here is the bill it refers to. thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:h645: My attitude is this: What? You think we weren't paying attention to the central lesson of the 20th Century? You may build the camps, we will not go. Try to put us in them by force, and we will kill you. Try to fill them with political prisoners, and those of us you have not snared will break the wire, shoot the guards, slit the throats of the commanders, burn down the businesses of those who collaborate with tyranny to support them and blow up the rails, roads and bridges leading to them. We are not "good Germans." We will not acquiesce in our own ...

How Cooking For the Taliban Gets You Life in Guantánamo by Andy Worthington Those of us who prefer justice to arbitrary and unaccountable detention without charge or trial were delighted when, last week, Barack Obama fulfilled a long-stated promise and issued a presidential order stating that Guantánamo will be closed "as soon as practicable, and no later than one year from the date of this order," and establishing an immediate review of the cases of the remaining 242 prisoners to work out whether they can be released. A year is a long time, of course, if you're unfortunate enough to have been imprisoned in Guantánamo for up to seven years with no way ...
Phony Guantanamo Recidivism Numbers? Post Date: 2009-01-29 06:15:23 by Ada

Phony GuantanamoThe Department of Defense claimed in a dramatic press briefing on January 13 that 61 in all former Guantanamo detainees are confirmed or suspected of returning to the fight of terrorism. This figure has been repeated incessantly since that time by the mass media, often without the or suspected of qualifier in the statement. Now experts in the matter are suggesting that the Pentagon study exaggerated the number, as has happened in the past. Seton Hall Law School Professor Mark Denbeaux has authored a study on the Pentagons claim, including an exposé of exaggerated Pentagon statements back to March 2004 about Guantanamo detainees who ...

Smoking Mirrors As long as certain twisted souls feel the need to lie, cheat and murder to achieve their ends some of us need to keep pointing it out... Visible Origami is the metaphysical blog Visible Stream of Consciousness is the poetry blog and Reflections in a Petri Dish is the cultural blog. Tuesday, January 27 Genocide, from the World's Biggest Victim Industry. When I was a child I read a great deal of history, biographies and the Greek and Roman myths. I found the myths especially fascinating. Even in my youth I knew they related to human existence as much as anything did. I used to wonder about the extreme cruelties that people visited on each other. It didnt ...
White children most likely to be bullied Post Date: 2009-01-27 15:41:00 by X-15

White children are much more likely to be bullied than any other ethnic group - reversing racial stereotypes surrounding playground abuse, Government research indicates. Two thirds of children from white families say they had been bullied in the last three years but less than half of children of Indian origin make the same assertion. Anti-bullying campaigners say white children are now in the minority in some areas raising their chances of being bullied. Claude Knights, director of anti-bullying charity Kidscape, said:More and more were hearing that in some cities it isnt the usual isolation of ethnic groups, suddenly we have got statistics that show we have got a ...

With America having ruined its finances through excessive debt, the new administration is urging more hair of the dog that bit us: borrowing another $820 billion or so for fiscal stimulus. Of course, in all the infrastructure spending in the Democrats bill, theres no mention of beefing up or speeding up one massive infrastructure project already underway: the lagging border fence. The rationalizations for the stimulus keep changing. Obamas latest featured money pitwind and solar energy!being a desperate throwback to last summer when gasoline prices were twice as high. Sure, none of it makes much sense. But for Obama, politically, its a ...

Educated in a Tent Post Date: 2009-01-24 17:12:59 by Turtle

A few years ago, I ran across an article about a 52-year-old man who had lived with his 12-year-old daughter in a tent in a Portland , Oregon park for four years. When they were discovered, the girl was described as "well-spoken beyond her years." Actually, this girl, who would have been in the seventh grade, tested at the 12th grade level. And what did her educational materials consist of? A set of old encyclopedias and a Bible. Not long after, in one of those odd synchronicities that happen to all of us, I ran across another article about a father encountering three high-school girls who were talking about a party they had attended. He writes: "Seemingly still semi-drunk ...

Friday, January 23, 2009FAKE "Freedom Fighters" Among Us Anyone in activism knows that there are many types of personalities out there you will have to deal with. But which ones of these personalities are getting paid to create friction and which ones are just truly ONLY psychotic or more difficult than most to understand...?The common myth is that anyone experiencing "friction" in their respective group is "in-fighting." They are encouraged to "forget about it" and commonly hear things like "let's all get along and unite." What many do not know is that you will NEVER be able to unite and become effective as long as you are infiltrated ...

US Has Been Torturing Our Own Citizens, Including Children, For Decadesby William Cormier Page 1 of 9 page(s)www.opednews.com The subject of torture has been a sore spot for me, and because of personal embarrassment, I have written little on the subject except for an article written in 2005 that has remained buried in the archives. The time for avoiding this subject has come to its end, and to start-off the commentary, I am raising from the dead an article that was written before I became fairly well known - and I've kept it buried on purpose. One out of nine adults in the United States has been incarcerated or on parole or probation, and 35 years ago, I was ...

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities at a North Carolina college say a huge snowball fight got out of control, forcing campus police to use pepper spray on some students to contain the rowdy crowd. Police were called to a dormitory at East Carolina University three times Tuesday as hundreds of students pelted each other with snow, The Daily Reflector of Greenville reported. The college is in a part of the state which doesn't get snow often, but a rare storm dropped several inches on campus that day. Police said some students were getting too aggressive and an officer used pepper spray on a group that rushed officers trying to make an arrest. Junior Brandon Davis said "it all ...

When tyrants rule, jesters often boldly tell truths that falter on the lips of fear-plagued philosophers. Perhaps this explains why, amid the consolidation of a totalitarian Homeland Security State, it fell to Kevin James, gifted comic actor, mixed martial arts fan, and cinematic role model for economy-sized American men, to put into play the notion that we would be better off doing away with government police forces outright, and entrusting security to private citizens and entrepreneurs. James co-wrote, co-produced, and stars in the new movie Paul Blart: Mall Cop, a modestly produced family comedy whose immense opening weekend success (it took in something north of $34 million, or nearly ...

A correspondent recently informed me about the Global Poverty Act of 2007. This bill did not pass Congress. It can be re-introduced in the current Congress. Obama favors this bill.
I have a negative opinion of this bill. I could explain why my opinion is negative. I’ve done that before with other laws that have been passed by the federal government. Instead, I will go to the root of the political matter.
Dozens of these bills are introduced into Congress and many get passed. Along the way, there are hundreds of groups that favor and oppose these bills. One can be fighting these fights 24 hours a day. This is not my idea of living. In my remaining years, I’d like to do a few other ...
Logan mother reports deputies to FBI Daughter alleged rape by police in September Post Date: 2009-01-21 18:56:21 by Disgusted

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The mother of a woman who says she was raped by three Logan County law enforcement officers says deputies have harassed her and her daughter since then. The woman, who did not want her name used in this story for fear of revealing her daughter's identity, said she contacted the FBI after two Logan County sheriff's deputies followed her and her daughter around in early December. After passing two deputies several times as they went through Logan, the woman says she went into City Hall and left her 22-year-old daughter in the car. The same two deputies pulled up behind her, the woman said. "So after the fifth time of seeing the same ones, it was time to get ...
Dutch Court orders prosecution of Wilders for incitement to hatred Post Date: 2009-01-21 16:56:56 by Disgusted

Dutch Court orders prosecution of Wilders for incitement to hatred This translation of a Dutch document was sent to me by Dutch reader Sam H. The document appears to be an official document of the Dutch justice system. Below it I have posted the response by Wilders's Freedom Party. As I've said before, so long as Europe's totalitarian "anti-hate" laws remain in effect, any movement to stop the Islamization of Europe will be strangled in the cradle, because, under those laws, which make it a criminal offense to "incite hatred or discrimination" against a group, any truthful, critical statement about Islam is a crime. Therefore a top priority of the ...
Shadow of vigilantes appears in Mexico drug war Post Date: 2009-01-21 07:37:48 by PSUSA

Mon Jan 19, 2009 6:11pm EST By Julian Cardona CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Shadowy vigilante groups are threatening Mexico's drug gangs near the U.S. border in retaliation for a wave of murders and kidnappings that killed 1,600 people in this city alone last year. One group in the border city of Ciudad Juarez pledged last week to "clean our city of these criminals" and said their mission was to "end the life of a criminal every 24 hours." The emergence of vigilantes would be a new twist to a vicious drug war that killed 5,700 people in Mexico last year and forced the United States to give hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to the Mexican ...

It is true the amount of comic books I read as a kid weighed more than I did. It got to the point where I couldn't lift the box in my closet in which I stored them. I wish I had kept them. I wouldn't be able to retire on their sale, but I wouldn't have any more car payments. Comics, for me, were just way cool. I was fascinated by the multi-colored drawings depicting things impossible in real life, such as guys zooming through the air like The Rocketeer. Whoa! Even the most-advanced CGI in movies today is finally beginning to catch up with the comics of 50 years ago. Mostly, though, I liked the stories. Without them, comic books would be meaningless colored pictures. ...

Smugglers of truth * Naomi Wolf Naomi Wolf discusses the book and film of The End of America Link to this video Every once in a while, a culture shifts. You feel like a Luddite until your new learning curve is complete. That is the experience I have been having recently, as my book The End of America has been turned into a documentary. Can political documentaries make a difference? For someone who lives mostly in the dimension of words, it is an exciting and scary question. The End of America details the 10 steps that would-be dictators always take in seeking to close an open society; it argued that the Bush administration had been advancing each one. I took the message on the road, and ...

One way I like to do this, and have been quite successful at, is fighting traffic tickets here in California. I have beaten six of them in court; in the one case the kangaroo court judge found me 'guilty' of speeding, but I filed an appeal in the Superior Court of Appeals in San Bernardino County, CA. I wrote my own legal brief, filed it through the mail, (one ...
Woman fights for firehouse - and right to speak up Post Date: 2009-01-18 14:38:34 by freepatriot32

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Overlooking this 200-year-old city is a neighborhood called the Heights, where simple frame homes built for immigrant coal miners, brewery workers and railroad hands after the Civil War stand cheek by jowl along sharply inclined streets and alleyways. There's little open space among the singles, twins and rowhouses here. One consequence: If a house catches fire, adjacent structures are at risk, too. Seconds count when firefighters get a call. Generations of Heights dwellers have known this. So when the mayor decided to shutter the neighborhood's lone, dilapidated firehouse - saying it required costly repairs that Wilkes-Barre could ill afford - Denise Carey ...
