5PM SA Local Time, 11 April 2008 South Africa Sucks Blog, hosted by Google, an alternative news site for South African news, has just been deleted, apparently for TOS violation. It was very popular, getting close to a million hits, over three thousand articles and with a very active discussion community and usually about six regular contributors. It was a real community project and the new editors often were chosen from some of the regular commenters. It was one of the few places you could get a real feel for the day to day life and situation in South Africa. It was for the most part by South Africans but the readership and commenters were from all over the world. It also exposed the ...

The Iraqi government has dismissed about 1,300 soldiers and policemen who deserted or refused to fight during last month's offensive against Shiite militias and criminal gangs in Basra, officials said Sunday. Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said 921 police and soldiers were fired in Basra. They included 37 senior police officers ranging in rank from lieutenant colonel to brigadier general. The others were dismissed in Kut, one of the Shiite cities where the fight had spread. Last month, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordered the security forces to confront armed groups in Basra, Iraq's second largest city. But they met fierce resistance and the attack ...

A harrowing account from a man the CIA handed over to Jordan -- smuggled from prison on tiny paper -- exposes U.S. complicity in torture. A message written by Ali al-Hajj al-Sharqawi, smuggled from prison, describing Sharqawi's torture by Jordanian intelligence. April 10, 2008 | On a recent trip to Amman, Jordan, during a visit to the home of someone who had been detained by the Jordanian intelligence service in 2002, I was given two very thin strips of paper covered with Arabic writing and marked with a thumbprint. Curled up into a tight spiral, they were no bigger than the cap of a pen. My contact, who had smuggled the papers out of intelligence detention a few years previously, ...

The BBC has carried a report of research by something called Migration Integration Policy Index. MIPEX, as it is known, is:-
a handy quick-reference guide to migrant integration policies in Europe. Using over 100 policy indicators it scores countries on six key dimensions of integration policy. Policies are given a 1-3 score. A score of 3 signifies that a policy sets the most favourable conditions for migrant integration. Here best practice is defined by European Directives, Council of Europe Conventions and NGO proposals. This, then, is a measure of government-sanctioned national suicide. The six key dimensions of integration policy are: long-term residence, nationality ...

Man it feels good to not pay a dime, not plead guilty, and not waste a day in 'traffic school'. Screw that! I was taking the dog to the vet last year and got a speeding ticket, for violating VC 22350. (basic speed law). The first thing i did was get the maximum extension, which was 60 days. Then when the extension was drawing to a close I filed for a trial by declaration (through the mail) helpigotaticket.com/declar/index.html and I asked for a BAIL WAIVER so i didn't have to post bail. Basically the trial by declaration is as complex or as simple as you want it to be. I keep it simple, you write on the form that you didn't do it. I said that there was no evidence I ...

By Keith O'Brien, Globe Staff The Massachusetts Municipal Association severed ties today with the Anti-Defamation Leagues embattled No Place For Hate program, reigniting a debate that had gone quiet recently over the ADLs position on the World War I-era Armenian genocide. In a unanimous vote, the board of directors at the association, a nonprofit advocacy group for Massachusetts cities and towns, expressed strong disapproval of the ADL for failing to unequivocally acknowledge the Armenian genocide at a national meeting last November, according to a statement released yesterday. "Unequivocal recognition," the associations board of directors ...

Two women told a Senate subcommittee today they were raped, assaulted and harassed while working in Iraq for the U.S.-based contractor KBR though no criminal charges have been brought in either case. The testimony was explicit, graphic in detail and emotional. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., elicited their stories with gentle questions. Mary Beth Kineston told the committee she was raped by a fellow KBR employee, a Turkish national, in the cab of her truck at the dark Tigris river pumping station where she had to fill her truck by flashlight. "He pinned me down. I tried to fight so hard I hit the side of my arm so hard that it was black and blue for days," said Kineston. ...

ATLANTA (AP) A convoy protesting high diesel prices pulled out of a truck stop south of Atlanta about 30 strong, and got a lot stronger. By the time the truckers reached a section of Interstate 285 east of the city Tuesday morning, there were about three miles of tractor-trailers, headlights on, caution lights flashing, puttering along at about 20 mph. "We picked up drivers all along the way," said Danny Ashley, an independent driver who organized the protest. "A lot of drivers rode by and didn't stop, but we got a lot of owner-operators who joined in." Independent truckers across the country protested fuel prices by pulling off the road or slowing to a ...

The Sieve Benton squinted narrowly at the green leaf Dave Ander was experimentally rolling in his hand. "I don't know, Dave," said Benton. "Maybe it's none of my business. Still" He looked around at the trees, some of them six feet through the butt, that surrounded the clearing. The carcass of the dead roller was still sprawled over a heap of fallen logs at the edge of the clearing. The wrecked dozer was still upside down, and was already rusting where the roller's claws had ripped off the protective coating. Benton took a deep breath. "All the same, we've got to get going again. Summer won't last forever." Ander broke up several more ...
Report: More than 1K Iraqis deserted, refused to fight in Basra Post Date: 2008-04-05 00:33:38 by richard9151

Iraqi military commanders tell The New York Times that more than 1,000 soldiers and police officers either deserted or refused to fight during last week's crackdown on Shiite militants in the southern city of Basra. "The crisis created by the desertions and other problems with the Basra operation was serious enough that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki hastily began funneling some 10,000 recruits from local Shiite tribes into his armed forces," the paper says. "That move has already generated anger among Sunni tribesmen whom Mr. Maliki has been much less eager to recruit despite their cooperation with the government in its fight against Sunni insurgents and criminal ...
McCain Holds Off on Secret Service Protection Post Date: 2008-04-04 06:31:58 by Ada

Weeks after clinching the Republican presidential nomination, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) still has no Secret Service protection and has not requested it, the head of the agency told Congress yesterday. Director Mark Sullivan said the Secret Service does not provide agents, metal detectors, vehicles or other security measures to candidates until they ask for them. McCain's Democratic rivals, Sens. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) have round-the-clock Secret Service coverage. "Statutorily he is not required to take protection," Sullivan said of McCain, in response to several questions from Rep. Ciro D. Rodriguez (D-Tex.) and Rep. Harold Rogers (R-Ky.). ...

VIOLA, Wis. (AP) A landowner with "strong anti-government attitudes" barricaded himself in his rural home Thursday and fired shots at SWAT officers trying to search his home and arrest him, authorities said. No one was injured. The dispute started Monday when Richland County sheriff's deputies tried to serve Robert Bayliss, 60, with a lawsuit seeking to evict him for failure to pay property taxes back to 2001 on his home and 18 acres, Richland county counsel Benjamin Southwick said. The county took ownership of the land in November because of the unpaid taxes, Southwick said. Rifle shots were fired at officers who went to the property Monday, said Darin Gudgeon, the ...
