Rude cellphone users now under attack by the jammers Post Date: 2007-11-05 11:09:22 by angle

Most everyone has a rude cellphone user story. Boorish louts yakking inside movie theaters, or in lines at grocery stores having intensely personal conversations, or rambling on in elevators loudly as their precious signal wanes. Some people are now fighting back with a devious little gadget. There is the growing use of a cigarette size box that emits a powerful radio signal that will cut off the offending cellphone transmission and any others in a 30-foot radius. The New York Times reports of a small but growing band of vigilantes who are using the cellphone jammer, a gadget that renders nearby mobile devices impotent. The technology is not new, but exporters of jammers say ...
'Thought Crimes' HR 1955 Passed With 404 Votes Post Date: 2007-11-05 06:35:06 by Ada

Submit, Ye Citizens, Silently to State Murder The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed HR 1955, titled the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. It was passed with 404 votes in favor. A close reading within an historical context keeping especially in mind the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act of 2006 and Presidential Executive Orders, pursuant to which the government has engaged in massive surveillance of its own citizens, as well as detentions, extraordinary renditions, assassinations, and torture leads me to the following conclusions: This is a "Thought Crime" bill of the type so often discussed in an ...

Sir Richard Dearlove head of MI6 from 1999 - 2004 Confronted by We Are Change Uk and MI5 Whistleblower Annie Machon at a talk entitled, Can Journalists be trusted with public security? In a leaked Downing Street memo Sir Dearlove is quoted as saying that, "the facts and intelligence are being fixed (by the US) around the policy (of invadiing Iraq)" subsequent to his prior trip to Washington. Is this an instance in which journalists have jeopardised public security? since the contents of the memo were perhaps not what the government would have wanted made public, or does the fact that the majority of people are unaware of this memo illustrate that there is a comfortable ...

Vice President Dick Cheney's remarks that the country should not abandon Iraq was met with protest both inside and outside the Hyatt Regency in Dallas on Friday. "We must maintain the will to see the mission through," he told the World Affairs Council during a luncheon at the downtown hotel. "We believe Iraq does matter. We believe the stakes are very high, he said. Mr. Cheney warned that a premature withdrawal from Iraq would destabilize the Middle East. Mr. Cheney also said it was critical that Iran not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapons program. A woman sitting in the back of the luncheon stood and shouted, "Get out of Iraq," and ...

The Guantamo Suicides Post Date: 2007-10-31 06:22:25 by Ada

The grim story of the Guantánamo suicides--the deaths of three men, Ali al-Salami, Mani al-Utaybi and Yasser al-Zahrani in June 2006, and another, Abdul Rahman al-Amri, in May this year--took another turn last week, when, in the absence of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service's long-awaited report into the deaths, Navy Capt. Patrick McCarthy, the senior lawyer on Guantánamo's management team, spoke out in an interview, declaring that all four men had killed themselves with "craftily fashioned nooses." Speaking as the ridiculous saga of smuggled underwear continued to make waves in the media, McCarthy attempted to highlight the seriousness of the ...
Prior Permission From Government to be Required for Each Flight Post Date: 2007-10-27 01:58:35 by Horse

The Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security are quietly pushing for a set of crazy new rules. All travellers in the U.S. will be required to get government-issued credentials and official clearance before every flight, both within the United States as well as internationally. And Monday we received a new political action alert from Edward Hasbrouk, The Practical Nomad blogger who's been fighting the plan (and who testified about it at a TSA hearing). "The international Advance Passenger Information System rules were published, as 'final' effective February 19,2008, with no further opportunity for public comment even on the changes ...

Shut Down Downtown Tacoma! We want to show the powers that be, that a homeland security detention center will not be tolerated in our communities and in our region. This will be in solidarity with the No Borders camp that will be happening the same week down south. We plan on sending a very visible, clear message by not allowing business as usual to happen on these days. Tacoma W.A has the biggest Homeland Security Detention Center in the North West! They have been tearing apart families, separating children born here from their parents and loved ones that were not. Sixty-four people have died in these detention centers since 2004, and just recently about three hundred people were made ill ...

Todays issues unfortunately being totally boring for the most part, forcing you to replace the word gun in your song with plan, because amending a clean energy bill at the last minute to subsidize nuclear power plants doesnt really scan. Also, maybe there will be a camera there and you can talk about your feelings! Only dont let the camera linger too long on Jackson ...

California Appeals Decision Limits Car Confiscation Full text of a California Appeals Court decision limiting car seizures outside the home of a motorist. A three-judge California Appeals Court panel issued a unanimous ruling last week limiting the ability of police to seize automobiles from outside a motorist's own home without a compelling safety reason to do so. The case began when Santa Monica Police Officer Derek Morton stopped Ricky Conley Williams for not wearing a seatbelt, just outside of Williams' home. Because Williams was driving a rental car at the time, he did not have the vehicle's registration or insurance information. Officer Morton decided to arrest Williams ...
Immunity for Telecoms May Set Bad Precedent, Legal Scholars Say Post Date: 2007-10-22 21:14:23 by Dakmar

When previous Republican administrations were accused of illegality in the FBI and CIA spying abuses of the 1970s or the Iran-Contra affair of the 1980s, Democrats in Congress launched investigations or pushed for legislative reforms. The proposal marks the second time in recent years that Congress has moved toward providing legal immunity for past actions that may have been illegal. The Military Commissions Act, passed by a GOP-led Congress in September 2006, provided retroactive immunity for CIA interrogators who could have been accused of war crimes for mistreating detainees. Legal experts say the granting of such retroactive immunity by Congress is unusual, particularly in a case ...
Bill Maher boots protester from audience Post Date: 2007-10-20 11:22:10 by kiki

LOS ANGELES - Bill Maher can add "security guard" to his job description alongside comedian and political commentator. Maher on Friday night helped security remove a rowdy protester from the studio during his weekly HBO show "Real Time with Bill Maher," and it was all captured on live television. Maher was talking science during one of his weekly panel discussions when a protester in his audience stood up, held up a smuggled-in sign reading "9/11 is a cover up fraud" and shouted comments to the same effect. The host tried to shout down the audience member, who only became more agitated. "Do we have some (expletive) security in this building," ...
Bitter Harvest for Small Farms Post Date: 2007-10-20 08:17:30 by purpleman

WINGINA, Va. -- To some, Richard Bean is a folk hero: the small farmer who dared to sell local, naturally raised pork chops, ribs, sausages and bacon. To the government, Bean looks like a felon. Since 2001, Bean has sold his pork to restaurants and at farmers markets in the Charlottesville area, where he also offers chicken, vegetables and homemade bread. In many ways, his Double H Farm is exactly what the burgeoning eat-local movement wants: a diversified, family-run farm that sells to nearby customers. But to make farming sustainable, Bean said, he has evaded government requirements that producers have animals slaughtered and processed in inspected facilities. His defiance led to his ...

Why, Even If You Have Nothing To Hide, Government Surveillance Threatens Your Freedom The Case Against Expanding Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Powers Find Law | October 19, 2007 JOHN W. DEAN "I've got nothing to hide, so electronic surveillance doesn't bother me. To the contrary, I'm delighted that the Bush Administration is monitoring calls and electronic traffic on a massive scale, because catching terrorists is far more important that worrying about the government's listening to my phone calls, or reading my emails." So the argument goes. It is a powerful one that has seduced too many people. Millions of Americans buy this logic, and in accepting it, ...
Resign, Retire, Renounce Post Date: 2007-10-19 06:55:04 by Ada

What should generals do if Bush orders a foolish attack on Iran? From the Joint Chiefs of Staff to U.S. Central Command, most of America's military leaders have expressed wariness about, if not outright opposition to, the idea of bombing Iran. So, if President George W. Bush starts to prepareor actually issues the orderfor an attack, what should the generals do? Disobey? Rally resistance from within? Resign in protest? Retire quietly? Or salute and execute the mission? The appropriateness of military dissent is a hot topic among senior officers these days in conferences, internal papers, and backroom discussions, all of which set off emotional arguments and genuine ...

Toward dusk on the evening of October 21, 1967, a burly federal marshal took hold of my feet, dragged me away from the plaza in front of the Pentagon where I had been sitting in, and pulled me down the adjacent embankment, before depositing me on the pavement of the building's north parking lot. I was then 16 years old, a high-school junior from a small town in Connecticut on my first trip to the nation's capital. I picked myself up bruised, dusty, and choking from tear gas and limped back across the bridge connecting Arlington, Va., to Washington. All in all, I thought, it had been the best day of my life. It was probably not the best day in the life of Secretary of ...
