War Talk Post Date: 2007-03-03 03:55:13 by Zoroaster

March 3, 2007 War Talk by Charley Reese It's interesting how much of our language is taken from war. Politicians in particular like to wage "war" on such things as cancer, drugs and terrorism (all of them lost so far). Aspiring politicians who probably haven't had a real fight since second grade always promise "to fight" for whatever they happen to be promising. "Lock, stock and barrel" refers to the parts of a rifle, and the expression "shot his wad" refers not to sex, as the modern mind might think, but to the fact that in a battle involving muskets, soldiers would sometimes forget to put the musket balls in and thus shoot only their ...

KING, N.C., March 2 Magnets in the shape of yellow ribbons with the slogan Support Our Troops are disappearing from U.S. cars. In one sign of the times, Magnet America, in King, N.C. -- the largest manufacturer of the patriotic symbols -- has a stockpile of 1 million of them, The Financial Times reported. The company says its sales of the yellow ribbons have dropped to 4,000 a month from 1.2 million. Every product has a lifespan and this one has run its course, said Micah Pattisall, the company ' s director of operations. The company's largest seller now is a wristband promoting premarital abstinence with the slogan True Love Waits. There appear to be a number of reasons for the ...

Another year has gone by without justice. All of the survivors are living in other parts of the state and Mt. Carmel is now overrun by squatters and outsiders. This whole case has been very heartbreaking to say the least. Each year that goes by another generation of children is born not knowing this even happened. I need to call Clive Doyle so I can see if there is going to be a memorial this year. Obviously due to the squatters, there will be no services at Mt. Carmel, but perhaps they are still having a get-to-gether anyway elsewhere. I'll keep you posted. After April 19th I will no longer be able to run this news service. Circumstances in my life are as such that I have to ...

Hicks tells of torture and abuse at Guantanamo Tom Allard, Sydney March 2, 2007 AFTER arriving in Guantanamo Bay, David Hicks says he was shown a photo of a battered fellow Australian, Mamdouh Habib, and told he would be sent to Egypt for similar, brutal treatment if he did not co-operate with US interrogators. The claim of abuse is one of many made by accused terror suspect Hicks in a document to be presented in May to a British court as he seeks UK citizenship. The document aims to chronicle claims of mistreatment and torture by US guards and interrogators, both allegedly experienced and seen by Hicks. While the US has repeatedly denied mistreating prisoners, Hicks claims his ...

The Libertarian Pledges by Max Raskin DIGG THIS As a high school junior, it always entertains me when I see how people get so worked up over the Pledge of Allegiance. I hate to break it to you, but honestly, most students dont care one way or another what they have to say in the morning. As Lewis Black says, the Pledge is nothing more than coffee to wake up groggy students; no one really cares about philosophic ideology at eight in the morning. But lets say that I was an extremely contentious young person and did care about issues like the nature of our federal union first thing in the morning. I delved into the recesses of my memory to recall the single incident I have ...

Men of the West, Stand and Fight! Jared Taylor, Special to AR News, Feb. 26, 2007 On February 23, the two top leaders of the Vlaams Belang party (VB) addressed a group of nearly 100 Americans in Arlington, Virginia. Now the largest party in Belgium, the VB is one of the most successful European political parties battling for immigration restriction and local autonomy. Party spokesman Philip Dewinter and chairman Frank Vanhecke stressed to an enthusiastic audience that their struggle is Americas struggle, that they are fighting for the preservation of Western Civilization everywhere. The meeting was organized by the Robert A. Taft Club, which brings speakers to the ...

There is an attorney from Shreveport, Louisiana named Tom Cryer who is being prosecuted by the income tax enforcement apparatus. His story and mine have some interesting parallels, among them, (1) that he was mindful of his oath to support and defend the Constitution taken as an army officer and an attorney, (2) that he set out, initially, to disprove claims that the federal income tax was illegally administered and enforced and ended up concluding the claims were true and (3) the IRS has done everything possible to destroy him. http://www.gcstation.net/liefreezone/#restStory The scorched earth campaign aimed at Tom has left him without the economic means to defend himself and the IRS ...
Democrats Back Away From Iraq Plan Post Date: 2007-02-27 02:43:08 by Horse

WASHINGTON - Democratic leaders backed away from aggressive plans to limit President Bush's war authority, the latest sign of divisions within their ranks over how to proceed. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Monday he wanted to delay votes on a measure that would repeal the 2002 war authorization and narrow the mission in Iraq. Senior Democrats who drafted the proposal, including Sens. Joseph Biden of Delaware and Carl Levin of Michigan, had sought swift action on it as early as this week, when the Senate takes up a measure to enact the recommendations of the bipartisan Sept. 11 commission. Reid, who will huddle with Democrats Tuesday to discuss whether to postpone ...

When it comes to Iraq, the opposition party is afraid to oppose. It's hard to get out of a deal with the devil. That's the congressional Democrats' dilemma as they continue to treat the Iraq war as a speed bump on their pathway to the perks of restored power. Take Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware. Asked on one of the Sunday venues for pompous pontificators how he would respond to any attempt by President Bush to escalate the war in Iraq (to "surge," if you prefer it in Newspeak), the Democratic "leader" on foreign policy responded, "There's not much I can do about it." This is a man who sees a future president during his morning look in the ...

President Carter Rips Cheney Over Iraq: His Batting Average Is Abysmally Low Last week, Last week, Vice President Cheney attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) for supporting Iraq redeployment. He charged that their plan would validate the al Qaeda strategy. Today, former President Jimmy Carter rejected Cheneys charges, stating that calls for a change of policy in Iraq are not playing into the hands of al Qaeda or the people who are causing violence and destruction over there. He added, If you go back and see what Vice President Cheney has said for the last three or four years concerning Iraq, his batting ...

Elites to Anti-Affirmative-Action Voters: Drop DeadHeather Mac Donald The University of California has spent a decade wiggling around Proposition 209. In 1996, Californians voted to ban race and gender preferences in government and education. Ten years later, the chancellor of the state-funded University of California at Berkeley, Robert Birgeneau, announced a new Vice Chancellorship for Equity and Inclusion, charged with making Berkeley more inclusive and less hostile to underrepresented minority . . . groups. This move is just the latest expression of the University of Californias unrelenting resistance to the 1996 voter initiative, in every ...

U.S. prison population projected to soar by 200,000 in five years The Associated PressPublished: February 14, 2007 WASHINGTON: Get-tough policies that lock up offenders for longer sentences are propelling a projected increase of nearly 200,000 in the U.S. prison population in the next five years, according to a private study released Wednesday. The increase projected by the Pew Charitable Trusts' study to be three times faster than the overall population growth in the United States is expected to cost states more than $27 billion. "As a country, we have a problem," said Susan Urahn, managing director of policy initiatives at the Pew Charitable Trusts, which ...

Whether you are Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Native American, Buddhist, Atheist, Agnostic, Gaian, or any other believer in any other faith, you have free will - with an individual brain, individual needs, and specific traditions. Whether you believe your free will is by virtue of universal laws, biology, religious traditions and concepts, or by the laws of any land, free will of the individual mind exists in its pure and natural state. In other words, you cannot enforce the capture or roboticism of the human mind. It cannot be done. The human, biological, religious, and familial minds of human beings are the essence and proof of free will. All creativity, invention, art, social and ...

OSLO (AFP) - Forty-six countries meeting in Oslo on Friday have pledged to seek a treaty banning cluster bombs by next year, with major user and stockpiler Britain and manufacturer France signing on. "Forty-six of 49 countries agreed on this declaration. It is a huge achievement and we are very satisfied," Norway's state secretary for foreign affairs Raymond Johansen told AFP. Japan, Poland and Romania refused to sign the accord, while key nations such as Israel and the United States did not take part in the conference. But, said Johansen, "countries like the UK came on board and that was more than we were expecting." The 46 countries agreed to "commit ...

Pardon me while I reminisce. I remember many years ago, sometime around 1965, when my mother asked me to go to a pop machine and buy her a cola. ( I remember that day because I lost the dime that she gave me - I was very young) I had a dime because that was the price of the bottle of cola. That's right - ten cents. Eariler today when I went to one of those machines I had to pay a dollar. A dollar? Why so much more than what I paid 40 years ago? Did the quality of the cola increase by ten times? Was it worth that much more today than what is what back then? I took a little time to compare some other prices as well, you know, just for the fun of it, and here's what I found. ...
Psychiatrist says US terror suspect has Stockholm syndrome Post Date: 2007-02-23 06:58:20 by Ada

A psychiatrist told a court in Miami US terror suspect Jose Padilla is unable to assist in his defense as he identifies with the military captors who held him for more than three years. Speaking at a hearing held to determine whether Padilla is fit to face trial on charges of aiding Al-Qaeda, forensic neuropsychiatrist Angela Hagerty said Padilla suffers from symptoms of the Stockholm syndrome, in which captives identify with their captors. "He's constantly advocating for the position of the government," said Hagerty, who examined Padilla between February and June 2006 and was called to the witness stand by the defense lawyers. "He lacks the capacity to assist the ...

1. nothing (or extremely little) in the slanderous comments made by "Wes" are relevant to anything (to the best of my memory). they are the same kind of spin-attacks the mass media throws at 911 truthers. just personal attacks - no proof - no substance - no meaning - other than to damage reputation. if you don't like working for someone, the proper thing to do is give notice, and leave politely. what "Wes" the dickhead "Perkins" did was so immature/pathetic, it's repulsive. 2. i think it was a little stupid for Stadtmiller to say/do some of the things i have heard him say/do - but no one is perfect - and i am sure his job isn't always easy. it ...

On War #206 February 20, 2007 A Swedish Lesson By William S. Lind [The views expressed in this article are those of Mr. Lind, writing in his personal capacity. They do not reflect the opinions or policy positions of the Free Congress Foundation, its officers, board or employees, or those of Kettle Creek Corporation.] Sometimes, single words can say more than whole essays. The Swedish captain in the 4GW seminar I lead at Quantico recently introduced me to such a word. It is the Swedish word for military intelligence: underrättelser. The literal translation of underrättelser is "correction from below." What a remarkably instructive term for military intelligence! The ...

I will never forget standing in formation after the end of our final "hump," marine-speak for a forced march, at the end of the Crucible in March, 1997. The Crucible is the final challenge during Marine Corps boot camp and is a two-and-a-half day, physically exhausting exercise in which sleep deprivation, scarce food, and a series of obstacles test teamwork and toughness. The formidable nine-mile stretch ended with our ascent up the "Grim Reaper," a small mountain in the hilly terrain of Camp Pendleton, California. As we stood at attention, the Commanding Officer made his way though our lines, inspecting his troops and giving each of us an eagle, globe, and anchor pin, ...
One In Three Iraqis 'In Poverty'; a sharp deterioration since the 2003 invasion.... Post Date: 2007-02-19 11:12:02 by Brian S

One-third of Iraqis are now living in poverty, according to a new UN study, with 5% in extreme poverty, a sharp deterioration since the 2003 invasion. Oil riches are not benefiting many of Iraq's people, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) study says. The report's authors are also highly critical of US-led attempts to try to introduce a market economy quickly. They single out education, saying things have not improved since the neglect of the Saddam years. Other indicators show a sharper fall, with half the population having unsatisfactory water supplies and more than 40% deprived of good sanitation. They say economic shock treatment in recent years has been naive and immature. ...

When it makes no sense at all
So be careful of those killing in Jesus's name (1)
He don't believe in killing at all (1)
And I wish you a long sight line (2)
And the strength to walk tall (2)
Walk tall
Yeah walk on
Through this world
Walk tall
Somewhere out in the distance
Is the death of you and me
Even though we don't think of it much
It's still out there for us to see
If you treat life like a bar room fight
You'll die stinking of gin
No drunkards are allowed in ...

Combating Iraqs militias means declaring war on the communities they govern. Think 20,000 more American troops in Baghdad will make Moqtada al-Sadrs Mahdi Army and the other Iraqi militias roll over and say uncle? Think again. The Bush administrations policymaking in Iraq remains where it has always beenat least three years behind what is actually happening on the ground. Gen. Dave Petraeus is being sent out as the new U.S. ground forces commander. Middle and junior level U.S. Army and Marine officers are eagerly snapping up copies of the just republished paperback version of Sir Alistair Hornes A Savage War of Peace, his classic account of the Algerian War ...

Improvised explosive devices don't require international conspiracies. By Andrew Cockburn PRESIDENT BUSH HAS now definitively stated that bombs known as explosively formed penetrators EFPs, which have proved especially deadly for U.S. troops in Iraq are made in Iran and exported to Iraq. But in November, U.S. troops raiding a Baghdad machine shop came across a pile of copper disks, 5 inches in diameter, stamped out as part of what was clearly an ongoing order. This ominous discovery, unreported until now, makes it clear that Iraqi insurgents have no need to rely on Iran as the source of EFPs. The truth is that EFPs are simple to make for anyone who knows how to do it. ...
