Baghdad (eCanadaNow) - Four US soldiers have died in a multiple bomb attack in Iraq, the US military said Thursday, as meanwhile joint US and Iraqi forces continued to carry out an aggressive new security operation in Baghdad. An official statement said the four were killed Wednesday in Diyala province, north of Baghdad, after a number of explosive devices detonated close to their vehicles. Two other soldiers were wounded and taken to a coalition medical facility for treatment. At the same time, there were conflicting claims about the whereabouts of Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr. Samy al-Askari, an advisor to the Shiite Premier Nuri al-Maliki, said that al-Sadr was currently in Tehran ...

Mexifornia, Five Years Later

Mexifornia, Five Years Later Victor Davis Hanson The flood of illegal immigrants into California has made things worse than I foresaw. In the Spring 2002 issue of City Journal, I wrote an essay about growing up in the central San Joaquin Valley and witnessing firsthand, especially over the last 20 years, the ill effects of illegal immigration (City Journal’s editors chose the title of the piece: “Do We Want Mexifornia?”). Controversy over my blunt assessment of the disaster of illegal immigration from Mexico led to an expanded memoir, Mexifornia, published the following year by Encounter Press. Mexifornia came out during the ultimately successful campaign to ...

On War #205 February 13, 2007 Distributed Ops or Dumb Ops? By William S. Lind [The views expressed in this article are those of Mr. Lind, writing in his personal capacity. They do not reflect the opinions or policy positions of the Free Congress Foundation, its officers, board or employees, or those of Kettle Creek Corporation.] For some years, the U.S. Marine Corps has been playing with a concept called "Distributed Operations." On January 11, it issued a short paper over the signature of Lt. General J. F. Amos, the grandiloquently titled "Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration" (I can remember when Marines would have choked on a title like that) ...

Life After Capitalism – And Now Too by Michael Albert; October 14, 2004 Mikhail Gorbachev, President 17 October 2004 ---- The Talk was: Why have Robin Hahnel and I devoted great time and energy to developing, describing, and now advocating an economic model to replace capitalism? What are the model's features, how does it differ from other models, and what are its immediate implications? We address economic vision because in the words of the great economist John Maynard Keynes - "[Capitalism] is not a success. It is not intelligent, it is not beautiful, it is not just, it is not virtuous -- and it doesn't deliver the goods. In short, we dislike it, and we are ...

by Paul Craig Roberts DIGG THIS Is the high command of the US military breaking ranks with the Bush Regime? With the "mainstream media," that is, the government’s propaganda ministry, bombarding the American public with "news reports" from unidentified sources that the US government has proof that "the highest reaches of the Iranian government" is supplying weapons to the Iraqi insurgency, Marine General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, demurred. General Pace told the Voice of America on February 12 that he has no information indicating that Iran’s government is supplying weapons to the Iraqi insurgency. General Pace said that ...

UN Peacekeeping Paramilitarism - by Stephen Lendman The world community calls them "Blue Helmets" or "peacekeepers," and the UN defines their mission as "a way to help countries torn by conflict create conditions for sustainable peace" by implementing and monitoring post-conflict peace processes former combatants have agreed to under provisions of the UN Charter. The Charter empowers the Security Council to take collective action to maintain international peace and security that includes authorizing peacekeeping operations provided a host country agrees to have them under Rules of Engagement developed and approved by all parties. At that point, the UN ...

Bar-Ilan prof. defiant on blood libel book 'even if crucified'

The author of a book on the use of blood by Jews in Ashkenazi communities in the Middle Ages said Sunday, in the face of the furor its publication aroused, "I will not give up my devotion to the truth and academic freedom even if the world crucifies me." In an interview with Haaretz from Rome, Professor Ariel Toaff said he stood behind the contention of his book, "Pasque di Sangue," just published in Italy, that there is a factual basis for some of the medieval blood libels against the Jews. However, he said he was sorry his arguments had been twisted. "I tried to show that the Jewish world at that time was also violent, among other things because it had been hurt ...

UK: Jewish group says criticism of Israel 'censored'

Claims made by group of British Jews that Jewish community is censoring attempts to criticize Israel stir row The Jewish community in Britain is "stifling debate" on Israel – that at least is the claim being made by a group of around a hundred British Jews, who have formed Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) . "None of us is suggesting that there is an unofficial censor who prevents individuals from expressing unpopular views about Israel or Zionism. It's what happens after people speak out - how their words are received - that is the point," Brian Klug, a founder of the group, wrote on the IJV's website. "Moreover, individual dissenting voices get ...

In yesterday’s article on Illegal Immigration we showed that Mexico is invading the United States: This is a war without a declaration of war. We also showed that the President of the United States was adhering to this enemy of the United States by giving aid and comfort to Mexico and its invaders and that Congress was acquiescing: This is treason. We also showed that the People have the Duty, the Right and the constitutional Power to peaceably procure relief by forcing the Government of the United States to faithfully execute the immigration laws and to otherwise honor and defend the Constitution: This is the power of the First Amendment Right to Petition for Redress of Grievances. ...

Will the Watada Mistrial Spark an End to the War?

A military judge in Fort Lewis, Washington, has declared a mistrial in the court-martial of Lieut. Ehren Watada, the first commissioned officer prosecuted for refusing to go to Iraq. A new trial is believed to be unlikely before summer, if at all. The mistrial represents a significant victory for Watada, for the rights of military resisters and for the movement of civil resistance to US war crimes in Iraq. On the surface, the ruling by Lieut. Col. John Head appears to result from a procedural technicality, but in fact it is a defeat for the Army's central goal in prosecuting the 28-year-old officer. The judge had gone to extraordinary lengths to try to keep Watada from achieving his ...

I've been mulling over an NBC Nightly News report from Iraq last Friday in which a number of soldiers expressed frustration with opposition to war in the United States. I'm sure the soldiers were expressing a majority opinion common amongst the ranks - that's why it is news - and I'm also sure no one in the military leadership or the administration put the soldiers up to expressing their views, nor steered NBC reporter Richard Engel to the story. I'm all for everyone expressing their opinion, even those who wear the uniform of the United States Army. But I also hope that military commanders took the soldiers aside after the story and explained to them why it wasn't ...

To provide the necessary context for what follows, I must offer a brief excerpt from the first part of this series: History provides us with stories of individual heroism from which we draw courage. We wonder: why did Hans and Sophie Scholl fight against the immense evil of the Nazi regime, even when they knew their actions would very likely lead to their deaths, as they did in fact? In our own time, we wonder: why does Ehren Watada refuse to participate in acts that he regards as evil, even when he knows the penalty for his refusal may be exceptionally severe? From what source does he derive his strength, and why is he willing to pay such a terrible price? As I noted in an earlier part of ...

Glenn Beck: A Cause for Concern by James Zogby (Monday February 05 2007) "When Beck is not venting his own prejudiced view of Islam, he invites on-air guests who amplify his views. They are of three types: Israelis, right-wing Americans with a long-established axe to grind against Arabs and Muslims, and lastly, a handful of Muslims who are largely alienated and self-styled outcasts who have found their shtick striking out against their co-religionists." Glenn Beck represents a truly troubling trend in television journalism. Since May 2006, the radio talk show host has had his own one hour nightly program on CNN’s Headline News channel. While the network may have hoped ...

The timing of his departure is both striking and curious. Since the Street Crimes Unit which he commanded was forced to close after the killing of Amadou Diallo, Chief Smolka has had a meteoric rise within the NYPD. He is currently the borough commander of Manhattan south of 59th Street, which is the plum patrol assignment at his level within the department. Why would Chief Smolka choose to leave now, at the height of his career, holding one of the most prestigious assignments the department has to offer? Is it ...

What to Do When Jury Duty Summons You

When you open your mailbox this afternoon, the last thing you’d expect to find is a summons to serve on a grand jury or regular trial jury. Most people cross their fingers hoping they can go through life without ever being called to jury duty. Unfortunately, plenty of people do get called and are unprepared for what is before them. It is because of this ignorance that prosecutors are able to indict virtually anybody for anything in the grand jury room, and it’s also the reason that the vast, vast majority of jury trials end in a conviction. There are some key things you can do if you are ever called to serve in a grand jury or regular jury that can help stem prosecutorial abuses. ...

FOUR YEARS ago today, then Secretary of State Colin Powell testified before the UN Security Council on the absolute necessity of going to war against Saddam Hussein. What followed is history. That testimony will define the bleak legacy of Colin Powell, but lately he has marked his distance from the war that his testimony both justified and enabled. In December, he contradicted administration claims to declare that the United States is "losing" the war in Iraq, and last month he contradicted the Bush "surge" strategy by calling for a "drawdown" of forces. Clearly, the former secretary of state is a man in the grip of regret. Powell's example calls to mind ...

Are Ed and Elaine Brown income tax protestors? Not hardly. Tax protestors, in this author’s opinion are people who mistakenly believe that the federal government has been given the power to tax the citizens of the ...

by Walter Block DIGG THIS When my son Matthew was growing up, my wife wanted me to teach him practical things like carpentry and plumbing. But when I was a kid (my father was an accountant), when a door jammed or the pipes were stopped up, this wasn’t the sort of thing you did yourself. Instead, you called a carpenter or a plumber. So, I knew nothing about these skills and cared less. Frankly, they bored me. Of course, part of bringing up a child, a big part, is doing things with him. To me it didn’t much matter what I did with Matthew, as long as it was something. So, what skills did I have that might interest him? Well, I played the violin, swam, and played handball. So I ...

(02-06) 08:08 PST LONDON, United Kingdom (AP) -- A leaked video in which an American pilot is heard saying "I'm going to be sick," then "we're in jail, dude," after U.S. troops killed a British soldier during a friendly fire incident in Iraq was released by The Sun newspaper Tuesday. Lance Cpl. Matty Hull died when troops fired on his convoy in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on March 28, 2003. A coroner investigating Hull's death had demanded the video be released and presented as evidence in the inquest but U.S. authorities refused. The leak means that the material is now in the public domain, his office said Tuesday, suggesting it may be shown when ...
