US Army Officer Who Refused to Deploy to Iraq Rallies Support Post Date: 2006-12-20 18:02:23 by Eoghan

HONOLULU An Army lieutenant who refused to deploy to Iraq told supporters that he was only following his military oath by challenging an "illegal and immoral policy." First Lt. Ehren Watada, 28, faces a court-martial in February. Speaking before a crowd of more than 100 supporters, Watada said he understands that in order to live with a clear conscience he would have to face the legal repercussions, including a possible prison sentence, for refusing to go to Iraq. "As leaders, as officers, we must stick our necks out and take that first step," he said. Watada, a member of the Army's first Stryker Brigade Combat Team at the time, refused to go to Iraq after ...

KARACHI - In the plains of southwestern Afghanistan, confident Taliban move around openly with their weaponry, to the frustration of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Afghan National Army (ANA) troops who can see them, but seem helpless in containing them. Indeed, foreign troops are mostly held hostage in their bases, and their alternatives are stark: conduct aerial bombings in which civilians would surely be heavy casualties, or pull out. The mood on the ground in Afghanistan is that the latter option will prevail. "It was really fun to fight with the Soviets [in the 1980s], but not so with the Americans. I remember once, three Soviet soldiers were besieged by ...

Apocalypto Thread Post Date: 2006-12-14 00:34:00 by Horse

I saw Mel Gibson's Apocalypto in Silicon Valley today. It is a message film and the message was made clear to me when I left the theater and drove home on the expressway which was packed with cars in both directions. The movie was about two dying cultures, the Aztecs and the Mayans, and was also telling us that we are about to die. Mel Gibson has said that he considers our service men and women as being human sacrifices for serving in Iraq. And he has said that we should pay attention to the Mayan calendar which runs out in 2012. The movie plot is about one man's struggle to resist evil and to save his family. That keeps us interested. The film is not for children, but the violence ...
General foresees 'generational war' against terrorism (50 to 100 years) Post Date: 2006-12-13 13:18:26 by Horse

The American people need to prepare for a long-duration war against radical Muslims who are set to fight for 50 to 100 years to create an Islamist state in the region, a top Pentagon strategist in the war on terror says. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark O. Schissler said in an interview that the current strategy for fighting Islamists includes both military and ideological components that make it similar to the 40-year Cold War against communism. "We're in a generational war. You can try and fight the enemy where they are and where they're attacking you, or prevent them and defend your own homeland," said Gen. Schissler, deputy director for the war on terrorism within the ...
$20bn gas project seized by Russia Post Date: 2006-12-13 07:00:21 by Eoghan

Shell is being forced by the Russian government to hand over its controlling stake in the world's biggest liquefied gas project, provoking fresh fears about the Kremlin's willingness to use the country's growing strength in natural resources as a political weapon. After months of relentless pressure from Moscow, the Anglo-Dutch company has to cut its stake in the $20bn Sakhalin-2 scheme in the far east of Russia in favour of the state-owned energy group Gazprom. The Russian authorities are also threatening BP over alleged environmental violations on a Siberian field in what is seen as a wider attempt to seize back assets handed over to foreign companies when energy prices were ...
Man to serve 55 years in prison for marijuana Post Date: 2006-12-12 15:59:42 by Neil McIver

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand the mandatory 55-year prison sentence that a lower court imposed on a man who was convicted of carrying a handgun during three marijuana deals in Utah. By refusing to hear the case, the U.S. Supreme Court ensured that 27-year-old Weldon Angelos will spend just about the rest of his life behind bars for selling three eight-ounce bags of marijuana to an undercover informant. As his attorneys noted, the sentence he will serve is harsher than the sentence for raping a child -- or the sentence for detonating a bomb aboard an aircraft. Even the federal judge who was required to issue the mandatory minimum sentence called it "unjust, cruel, and ...

(12-12) 08:12 PST BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Two car bombs targeting day laborers looking for work exploded within seconds of each other Tuesday on a main square in central Baghdad, killing at least 63 people and wounding scores, the government said. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a member of Iraq's Shiite majority, condemned the attack and blamed it on Sunni extremists and supporters of Saddam Hussein. In the northern city of Mosul, a television cameraman working for The Associated Press was shot to death by insurgents while covering clashes the third AP employee killed in the Iraq war. The coordinated attack in Baghdad's Tayaran Square involved a suicide attacker who ...

Airport Hustlers by Becky Akers by Becky Akers DIGG THIS In its tireless efforts to molest passengers, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is photographing them at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Naked. The TSA is about the baddest, bawdiest bureaucracy ever to curse a country, but geez, even they must have needed help on this one. I figure they went to Larry Flynt at Hustler Magazine for advice. Only a pornographer of his unsavory talents could have dreamed up such wickedness: tell Americans that merely groping us is no longer enough protection from the terrorists thronging our airports. Now we must pose for dirty pictures, too. And so the TSA has installed ...

A Young Marine Speaks Out by Philip Martin by Philip Martin DIGG THIS I'm sick and tired of this patriotic, nationalistic and fascist crap. I stood through a memorial service today for a young Marine that was killed in Iraq back in April. During this memorial a number of people spoke about the guy and about his sacrifice for the country. How do you justify 'sacrificing' your life for a war which is not only illegal, but is being prosecuted to the extent where the only thing keeping us there is one man's power, and his ego. A recent Marine Corps intelligence report that was leaked said that the war in the al-Anbar province is unwinnable. It said that there was nothing we ...
Iranian Holocaust Conference Will Showcase Deniers and Anti-Semites From Around the World Post Date: 2006-12-07 19:13:58 by Eoghan

ADL Urges European Leaders to Speak Out The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today urged European leaders to condemn an upcoming conference in Iran titled, "Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision," in which the Iranian government will feature dozens of speakers questioning the historical fact of the Holocaust. "We believe this type of Holocaust denial has no place in the family of nations, and that it is essential for European and world leaders to condemn this conference and everything it stands for at its core, which is anti-Semitism," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor. "Holocaust denial is an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory that ...

(12-07) 12:39 PST CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Private Saudi citizens are giving millions of dollars to Sunni insurgents in Iraq and much of the money is used to buy weapons, including shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles, according to key Iraqi officials and others familiar with the flow of cash. Saudi government officials deny that any money from their country is being sent to Iraqis fighting the government and the U.S.-led coalition. But the U.S. Iraq Study Group report said Saudis are a source of funding for Sunni Arab insurgents. Several truck drivers interviewed by The Associated Press described carrying boxes of cash from Saudi Arabia into Iraq, money they said was headed for ...

Brian Anderson, Undersheriff of Josephine County, broke down and could not finish speaking as he announced that Kim's body was found at 3:03 p.m. ET. This is an answer to the post I put up as Leaderless Resistence 2, and it shows, very cleraly, what the ONLY non-corruptable government is on this earth. All natural government flows from this, and this is the basis of what the Constitution was supposed to be about; DO NOT PERMIT THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT TO TOUCH THE PEOPLE, OR, INTERFERE IN THEIR LIVES! The points brought out here are important to understand why I, nor most of my friends, do not participate in the so-called government of the US. Such as voting. Some technical points...I took each item of your list of axioms and made a list of my own to show a different perspective. 1. governments *do* exist in nature. there is only one ...

This is just a rough draft - suggestions welcome!! Police: Estranged husband killed woman, 35 Mother of three fatally stabbed in front of 9-year-old son By TERRI SANGINITI, The News Journal Posted Tuesday, December 5, 2006 At 2:45 a.m., the little boy should have been asleep. But the loud noises coming from his mother's bedroom woke him up, so he went to investigate. What the 9-year-old saw, he later told police, was his dad on top of his mom, stabbing her with a screwdriver. He couldn't protect her, but he could run. So in the middle of the night, he was running to a neighbor's house in Lake Shore Village, north of Cheswold. It was past 3 a.m. when he knocked on their door and asked them to call 911, saying his dad had just ...

ADVERTISEMENT The images, taken from an unclassified Defense Department video, show Padilla being chained hand and foot and led out of his cell by three guards dressed in camouflage and wearing riot helmets and visors. The video images are the first publicly released of Padilla's 3 1/2-year detention at a ...

"Hes not an ordinary politician. He has strong beliefs." ~ Senator Charles Schumer describing Senator James Webb I have never met Senator-elect James Webb (D-VA), a highly decorated Vietnam War-era Marine, former U.S. Navy Secretary, novelist, screen writer, and historian, but I knew he was a man I should respect when I read his latest book, Born Fighting: A History of the Scots-Irish in America. Unlike so many books on American history, especially those about the "Civil War" era, Born Fighting gives one the impression that the author had embarked on a relentless search for truth and had no tolerance for the poison of political correctness. My intuition about ...

The Spirit of Resistance in Mexico City - by Stephen Lendman National Action Party (PAN) candidate Felipe Calderon had center stage at 12:01 AM, December 1 at the presidential residence of Los Pinos as Mexico's new president addressed the country on national television after a brief stealth swearing-in ceremony for him to the office he didn't win and will now assume illegitimately because of the fraud-laden electoral coup d'etat that gave it to him. He then had to be slipped in a back door of the Congress later that morning to take the oath of office there, as constitutionally required, in a second "lightning-fast" chaotic ceremony preceded by a brawl between ...
