Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik was indicted on Tuesday for lying to White House officials while he was being vetted for Secretary of Homeland Security in 2004. Kerik had been indicted last year of similar charges in New York, but those charges were dismissed and transferred to D.C., where the crimes allegedly occurred. According to prosecutors, Kerik had given misleading and false statements about his relationship with contractors who were seeking to do business with the city when he was police commissioner in 1999 and 2000. Kerik, who was also commissioner of corrections at the time, had spoken to city regulators on behalf of the ...

A particular universalism

The following is pretty long and is something like an attempt to sum up my world-view and contains many tangential connections. You may be more interested in my case against WW2 being black-and-white (without even mentioning nukes or firebombs), which appears to have succeeded in convincing my target, although it could be that I’m failing to recognize sarcasm on the internet. I, and I suspect many of my readers, are wary of something we call (among other things) “universalism”. The universe is a large and scary thing, the local and particular less so. Universalism seems to have the upper hand in the battle of ideas, which perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising given it ...

The Republican strategist who helped Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman prepare for a possible presidential run says the Republican party is in for a devastating defeat if its guiding lights are Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney. "If it's 2012 and our party is defined by Palin and Limbaugh and Cheney, then we're headed for a blowout," says strategist John Weaver, who advised Huntsman and was for years a close adviser to Sen. John McCain. "That's just the truth." Huntsman, a favorite of GOP moderates, left the Republican presidential race last week after accepting President Obama's offer to become U.S. ambassador to China. Before that, Huntsman appeared to ...

PrisonPlanet.com is increasingly using the 'anti-semite' canard, and had a moderator changed the name of a topic to I am not an anti-semite, I just blame jews for everything (Title Modified) I do not know what the original title was. The topic now has 121 pages of replies.(!) Here is the latest page from that thread. Meanwhile, the article FEAR AND CENSORSHIP RAMPANT IN "PATRIOT" COMMUNITY, which I first posted here at 4um, was linked on the front page of Rense.com. Mike Rivero of Whatreallyhappened.com responded to one of his members who posted it: Fear and Censorship Rampant In "Patriot" Community I post this as food for thought. The NWO boys use ...

Cheney aligns GOP future with Limbaugh over Powell

WASHINGTON (AP) — Dick Cheney made clear Sunday he'd rather follow firebrand broadcaster Rush Limbaugh than former Joint Chiefs chairman Colin Powell into political battle over the future of the Republican Party. Even as Cheney embraced efforts to expand the party by ex-governors Jeb Bush of Florida and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and the House's No. 2 Republican, VirginiaRep. Eric Cantor, the former vice president appeared to write his one-time colleague Powell out of the GOP. Asked about recent verbal broadsides between Limbaugh and Powell, Cheney said, "If I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd go with Rush Limbaugh. My take on it was Colin had ...

Sarah Palin's Approval Rating in Alaska is Crashing. When Will the Burning Start?

After the last six weeks of watching the Palin train cars derail one by one, in what can only be described as agonizing political slow motion, we've been waiting with curiosity to see what would happen when the latest Hays Research poll came out. The last poll numbers we had showed Palin's approval rating at 59.8% (sum of very favorable and favorable ratings) and her approval index (very favorable minus very unfavorable) at +14. Bear in mind that at one point, before people started paying attention, her approval rating hovered a hair under 80% and her approval index was an unheard of +40. Let's take a look at what those numbers looked like last July before the nomination. ...

Some members of the Islamic community are troubled by a recent meeting of a local Republican club after the speaker alleged that most American Muslims are involved in terrorism. Dorrie O’Brien of Grand Prairie was the guest speaker at the Metroplex Republican Women’s monthly meeting April 17 in Hurst. She is the head of the Grand Prairie chapter of ACT! for America, a Pensacola, Fla.-based group that describes itself as dedicated to fighting "the assault of radical Islam," according to its Web site. O’Brien’s speech described most or all Muslims in America as cooperating with terrorist organizations and supporting the overthrow of America, said people who ...

Specter Will Be Junior Democrat on Committees May 5, 2009, 8:55 p.m. By John StantonRoll Call Staff Despite promises from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) that Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) would retain his seniority after switching parties, Specter will be put at the end of the seniority line on all his committees but one under a resolution on the floor late Tuesday. Under the modified organizing resolution, Specter will not keep his committee seniority on any of the five committees that he serves on and will be the junior Democrat on all but one — the chamber’s Special Committee on Aging. On that committee, he will be next to last in seniority. As a result, Specter ...

What do you think about same-sex marriage at a state level?Wurzelbacher: At a state level, it's up to them. I don't want it to be a federal thing. I personally still think it's wrong. WASHINGTON (CNN) - Coming soon to a battleground state near you: a new effort to revive the image of the Republican Party and to counter President Obama's characterization of Republicans as "the party of 'no.'" CNN has learned that the new initiative, called the National Council for a New America, will be announced Thursday. It will involve an outreach by an interesting mix of GOP officials, ranging from 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain to Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor and the younger brother of the man many Republicans blame for the party's battered brand: former President George W. Bush. In addition to Sen. McCain and Gov. Bush, GOP ...

7 mins ago WASHINGTON – Confirming 40 cases of swine flu in the U.S., the Obama administration said Monday it was responding aggressively as if the outbreak would spread into a full pandemic. Officials urged Americans against most travel to Mexico as the virus that began there spread to the United States and beyond. President Barack Obama urged calm, saying there was reason for concern but not yet "a cause for alarm." Yet just in case, administration officials said that they were already waging a vigorous campaign of prevention, unsure of the outbreak's severity or where it would show up next. U.S. customs officials began checking people entering U.S. territory. ...

(CNN) — John McCain’s general election campaign began as “the strategic equivalent of throwing a football through a tire at 50 yards” – and was doomed weeks before Election Day, his former chief strategist said Thursday. “We were running a campaign under extra difficult circumstances — the state of the Republican Party, the president’s unpopularity, the economy — a lot of issues that were not John McCain’s fault, but were John McCain’s problem in this race,” Schmidt told an audience at the University of Delaware, according to Politico. “When Lehman Brothers collapsed in the fall I knew pretty much right away that … from ...

Rep. Peter King: Torture Trial Should Spark "Scorched Earth" Policy And Use Procedural Means To Bring The Place To A Halt — Go To War

New York Republican Rep. Peter King thinks his party needs to go nuke if Bush era officials are prosecuted on torture charges. King, the outspoken ranking member of the House homeland security committee, said Republicans should "shut down [legislative] activity across the board" if any Bush-era officials are hauled into court. "We would need to have a scorched-earth policy and use procedural means to bring the place to a halt — go to war," he told POLITICO. He added: "If we have another 2,000 people killed, I want Nancy Pelosi and [liberal philanthropist] George Soros, John Conyers and Pat Leahy to go to the funeral and say, 'Your son was vaporized ...

After 20 percent of US conservatives voted for Barack Obama, the Republican party was left in tatters. So what next? Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009, Page 9 A few weeks ago, in a large business hotel in Washington, a crowd of around 80 people had congregated outside one of the ballrooms when the double doors opened and a bald man in jeans and a lumberjack shirt backed out into the hallway. He was bent almost in half, wedging the doors open. “We’re almost ready to begin!” he called out. The crowd, who were waiting for a panel discussion on the future of the American Right, entitled Conservatism 2.0, paid only partial attention: The organizers had just started distributing ...

Neocon Fantasies of Empire Crushed: the New Global Reality

Not long ago, excitement over American imperialism reached levels not seen in a century. "People are coming out of the closet on the word ‘empire,’" the right-wing columnist Charles Krauthammer told The New York Times in early 2002. Neoconservatives were on the rise in Washington, and their leading propagandists were not shy in making the case for aggressive expansionism. Wall Street Journal editor Max Boot, for instance, took issue with Pat Buchanan’s belief that the United States should be a "republic, not an empire." "This analysis is exactly backward," Boot wrote. "[T]he Sept. 11 attack was a result of insufficient American ...

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The former vice president Dick Cheney is slamming President Obama’s efforts to set a new tone for relations with the U.S. on the world stage. “I guess I’ve been concerned the way that we’ve been presented overseas,” Cheney told Fox News host Sean Hannity Monday night. Cheney said he found it “disturbing” that the new president had gone overseas and seemingly apologized for past actions of the United States. “I think you have to be very careful. The world outside there — both our friends and our foes –will be quick to advantage of a situation if they think they’re dealing with a weak president or one who’s ...

Flanked by two burly security guards, U.S. conservative writer and activist David Horowitz posed the question to a packed crowd: are we all being indoctrinated? Last night, the Penn College Republicans brought Horowitz to Huntsman Hall to discuss his latest book, One-Party Classroom: How Radical Professors at America's Top Colleges Indoctrinate Students and Undermine Our Democracy. Horowitz began his address by stating that the function of a university is not to indoctrinate students but to encourage them to think for themselves. Students are taught that "society is dominated by race, gender and social hierarchies," Horowitz said. While he said he has no problem with ...

McCain Rebukes Hispanic Voters

John McCain sounds angry and frustrated that, despite the risks he took in pushing immigration reform, Hispanic voters flocked to Democrat Barack Obama in last year's presidential contest. McCain's raw emotions burst forth recently as he heatedly told Hispanic business leaders that they should now look to Obama, not him, to take the lead on immigration. The meeting in the Capitol's Strom Thurmond Room on March 11 was a Republican effort led by Sens. McCain of Arizona, John Thune of South Dakota, and Mel Martinez of Florida to reach out to Hispanics. But two people who attended the session say they were taken aback by McCain's anger. What began as a collegial airing of ...
