The Mold Is Smashed (ANDREW SULLIVAN) Post Date: 2008-01-04 12:08:15 by aristeides

The Mold Is Smashed Look at their names: Huckabee and Obama. Both came from nowhere - from Arkansas and Hawaii. Both campaigned as human beings, not programmed campaign robots with messages honed in focus groups. Both faced powerful and monied establishments in both parties. And both are running two variants on the same message: change, uniting America again, saying goodbye to the bitterness of the polarized past, representing ordinary voters against the professionals. Neither has been ground down by long experience, but neither is a neophyte. You have a Republican educated in a Bible college; and a Democrat who is the most credible African-American candidate for the presidency in ...
Paulites For Obama? (ANDREW SULLIVAN) Post Date: 2008-01-04 11:38:55 by aristeides

Paulites For Obama? How can I write "The Conservative Soul" and find myself rooting for Obama? How can my core beliefs resonate with the libertarianism of Ron Paul and yet allow for support of an urban liberal like Obama? Good questions. One short answer: because conservatism faces a deeper threat from corrupt Republicans than from honest liberals. Because, after eight years of big government Christianism, a unifying liberalism is something I can live with. Because I want to win the long war against the Jihadists - and we need to unite the country again to do it. Because grow-ups know that any democratic society needs at least two parties and that the alternation of right and ...

GOP race in total disarray By John F. Harris and Jonathan Martin Jan 3, 2008 10:22 PM EST Updated: January 4, 2008 09:34 AM EST DES MOINES, Iowa Mike Huckabees startling, not-even-close victory over Mitt Romney and the rest of the GOP field in the Iowa caucus means the Republican Party is in for a wildly unpredictable ride in the weeks ahead. Heres whats certain: Romneys dethroning has created a big opening for a John McCain revival in the New Hampshire primary next Tuesday. The Iowa results, with a victory for a populist social conservative deeply mistrusted by many people in the Republican establishment, also virtually guarantee that the nomination ...
Most Improved Candidate? Edwards Reconsidered Post Date: 2008-01-04 07:45:01 by Zoroaster

January 3, 2008 Most Improved Candidate? Edwards Reconsidered By NORMAN SOLOMON There have been good reasons not to support John Edwards for president. For years, his foreign-policy outlook has been a hodgepodge of insights and dangerous conventional wisdom; his health-care prescriptions have not taken the leap to single payer; and all told, from a progressive standpoint, his positions have been inferior to those of Dennis Kucinich. But Edwards was the most improved presidential candidate of 2007. He sharpened his attacks on corporate power and honed his calls for economic justice. He laid down a clear position against nuclear power. He explicitly challenged the power of the insurance ...

January 4, 2008 The War and the Elections Is the antiwar wave cresting? by Justin Raimondo The last election was all about the war, a referendum on a policy that has led us ever deeper into the Middle East, and the verdict was clear: the voters have had enough. In the interim, however, we've had a veritable D-Day-style propaganda campaign, designed to fool the public into believing that the so-called "surge" has worked, we're on the path to a "drawdown," and never mind that look over here! Voting Groups Urge Presidential Candidates to Demand Paper Ballots for Upcoming Primaries Post Date: 2008-01-04 01:26:30 by robin

Five voting integrity groups have sent a letter to presidential candidates urging them to call on states to use paper ballots for the 2008 primary elections. The groups, among them Iowans for Voting Integrity (whose state holds the first caucus tomorrow), cited a recent report out of Ohio that examined voting machines made by Diebold/Premier, Election Systems & Software and Hart InterCivic and found serious security vulnerabilities -- among them a vulnerability in ES&S iVotronic touch-screen machines that would allow someone to manipulate code on the machines via an infrared port. Ohio's secretary of state declared all of the machines unfit and called for paperless machines to ...

Poster Comment:Might as well have some fun. The mainstream media is not allowed to let us have a free and open debate. The greatest issue to me for 2008 is Iran and not Iraq. I would like to ask this question of all Presidential candidates on live TV: Why do we have 17,500 sailors and marines stationed in the Persian Gulf when they are within range of Iran's Russian made anti-ship missiles? It would seem sensible to move them to the Persian Gulf where they would be out of harms way when, not if, Israel attacks Iran. I believe our Fifth Fleet is intentionally being set up as the Next Pearl Harbor so Israel and Bush-Cheney can launch WW III. There is no issue more important to me than ...

The Iowa caucus: insignificant, yet overly complicated Enjoy it, Hawkeye State, because in a few hours we're gonna forget all about you for another four years. Everybody knows the Iowa caucus is the first major event of each party's presidential nomination process. Everybody knows the results often determine which candidates remain in the race and which ones will carpool with Dennis Kucinich back to Washington. But nobody really knows exactly how the Iowa caucus works. Do Iowans count up ballots to choose a candidate like most civilized states? No. Do they have some sort of electoral college system? Not really. Are the voting procedures similar to those portrayed in the adult ...

Poll: Hillary Barely Ahead In NH, McCain Shoots Ahead Of Romney By Eric Kleefeld - January 2, 2008, 7:15PM New polling from Franklin Pierce college shows Hillary Clinton clinging to a statistically insignificant lead in New Hampshire, while John McCain appears to have overtaken Mitt Romney. Here are the numbers, with comparisons to their last poll from mid-September: Democrats: Clinton 32% (-4) Obama 28% (+10) Edwards 19% (+7) Richardson 8% (-2) Republicans: McCain 37% (+23) Romney 31% (+1) Giuliani 10% (-13)Paul 6% (+3) Huckabee 5% (+3) Romney's problem is not that he's lost any support. Instead, he's stayed in one place while McCain has shot up in the polls and ...

Des Moines, Iowa - GOP presidential candidate John McCain is deeply worried that his resurgent national campaign may be stalled by a relatively strong showing in tonight's Iowa caucuses by the iconoclastic Ron Paul. The Arizona senator's campaign told the HuffPost that their candidate is concerned that Paul will finish third behind front-runners Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney. McCain, whose campaign floundered earlier in the year, has been showing renewed strength in the battle to win the key New Hampshire primary next week. His national numbers have also been rising and one respected poll now has him in first place.. The McCain campaign also gives former Arkansas Governor Mike ...

Iowa Is Uncertain as Out-of-State Students Return By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE Published: January 2, 2008 DES MOINES One of the $64,000-questions about Thursdays Iowa caucuses is how much students from out of state will influence the outcome. A big argument has been raging here about rules that allow out-of-state students who attend schools in Iowa to vote as long as they are not registered elsewhere. Although presidential campaigns here have been notorious over the years for using out-of-staters to pack rallies and organize, at issue here is their actual participation in the caucuses: some see it as a hijacking of their process, while others see it as a voting rights issue and ...

Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner is ordering Franklin County and all other 56 Ohio counties that use touch-screen voting machines to provide enough paper ballots for voters who request them in the March 4 primary. Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- The stakes in the U.S. presidential election may be the highest in decades, with danger spots multiplying around the world and economic threats looming at home. The election -- the first in 56 years that doesn't involve an incumbent president or vice president -- kicks off today in Iowa, a year after candidates such as Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama began campaigning. After the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8, no more than a third of the 20 Democrats and Republicans who took part in last year's debates are likely to be left standing. Both Democrats and Republicans are stressing the election's importance, spending ...

Obama grabs Iowa lead from Edwards Thu Jan 3, 2008 7:20am EST By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama surged to a four-point lead over John Edwards in Iowa, with Hillary Clinton fading to third just hours before the first presidential nominating contest, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Thursday. Obama and Edwards gained ground overnight in the tracking poll, and Clinton fell four points to third place -- a finish that, if it held, would deal a dramatic setback to the one-time Democratic front-runner. Obama was at 31 percent among likely Democratic caucus-goers, Edwards at 27 percent and Clinton 24 percent. No ...

Fred Thompson may drop out By: Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen January 2, 2008 11:20 PM EST DES MOINES, Iowa Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompsons presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursdays Iowa caucus. Thompsons campaign, which last spring and summer was generating fevered anticipation in the media and with some Republican activists, has never ignited nationally, and there are no signs of a late spark happening here in Iowa, where even a third-place finish is far from assured. This realitycombined with a fundraising droughtleft well-connected friends ...

Iowa Republicans To Choose Their Favorite Fearmonger Thursday night, Republicans in Iowa will gather in various caucus locations to choose the candidate who will do the best job of scaring the fucking shit out of America. Months ago, the most overzelaous fearmonger of the group, Rudy Giuliani, pulled out of Iowa and the resulting vacuum sucked Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney into the shared role of scaring the fucking shit out of Iowa. Since then, both have proved to be equally ...
Obama On Track To Win Caucus 2nd Tier Support Post Date: 2008-01-02 20:44:25 by robin

Des Moines--Barack Obama has already begun shoring up support among the lower-tier candidates who lack the money or poll numbers to be serious contenders in the early primary states, such as Iowa, and Offthebus hears that "agreements" with these candidates may be announced soon. Dennis Kucinich started what may add up to the critical mass Obama needs for a win or strong second-place showing in the Iowa caucuses, when Kucinich encouraged his supporters - few though there are in this frozen state - to join the Obama forces on caucus night, if Kucinich doesn't have enough voters to be viable. The Kucinich endorsement flooded the blogoshpere and the main-street-media and handed ...

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has widened his lead in Iowa over Hillary Clinton and John Edwards heading into Thursday's nominating caucuses, according to The Des Moines Register's final Iowa Poll before the 2008 nominating contests. Obama's rise is the result in part of a dramatic influx of first-time caucusgoers, including a sizable bloc of political independents. Both groups prefer the Illinois senator in what has been a very competitive campaign. Huckabee, Obama maintain leadsObama was the choice of 32 percent of likely Democratic caucusgoers, up from 28 percent in the Register's last poll in late November, while Clinton, a New York senator, held ...
