Rudy, the Values Slayer

WITH the new president heading off to his Texas vacation during that slow news month of August 2001, I wrote a column about a man who would never be president: Rudy Giuliani. Banished from Gracie Mansion after dumping his second wife for Judith Nathan, New York’s lame-duck mayor had been bunking for two months with a gay couple. No brand-name American politician had ever publicly done such a thing, so I decided to pay a visit to Rudy’s home away from home. His Honor was out that day, but Howard Koeppel, a garrulous Queens car dealer, and his partner, Mark Hsiao, a Juilliard-trained pianist, were gracious tour guides to their 32nd-floor apartment on East 57th Street. I asked Mr. ...

No Joke: Colbert's Campaign May Run Afoul of Law

Campaign Finance Law May Spoil Comedian's Fun Stephen Colbert says his presidential campaign is serious business and the Federal Election Commission may find that's no joke. (AP) With its snack-food sponsorship, Democratic and Republican affiliations, and Sen. Larry Craig as a possible running mate, Stephen Colbert's run for the presidency is hardly serious business. But the joke could be on Colbert if federal election officials decide his candidacy is for real. If his campaign plays out the way he's indicated that it will, Comedy Central and Colbert's sponsor, Doritos, could be violating federal laws that bar corporations from backing political campaigns, election ...

Gravel Supporter Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is

About two weeks ago, a supporter of Sen. Mike Gravel purchased a full page advertisement in the Concord Monitor. The ad likened Gravel to New England's favorite, and currently dominant, sports teams: "The Red Sox and Patriots used to be underdogs, too." It was a very simple ad, composed of little more than a metaphor and a plea for voters to "root for" Mike Gravel. The man behind that ad, Gregory Chase, just decided to up the ante a whole lot. Today he is putting more than $1,025,000 of his own money on the line for the cause of a low-polling, financially-floundering former Senator from the wilds of Alaska. That's right, Million with an "M". Mr. ...

Romney Open to Iran 'Bombardment'

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - Republican Mitt Romney said Thursday he would be willing to use a military blockade or "bombardment of some kind" to prevent Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon. The former Massachusetts governor's comments came as the Bush administration announced new sanctions designed to isolate the government in Tehran. Romney applauded the move, while several Democratic presidential contenders spoke out against it - and used it as an opportunity to criticize front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton. Said former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards: "I learned a clear lesson from the lead-up to the Iraq War in 2002: If you give this president an inch, he will take a ...

Stupid White Men

What woman would want to marry a man who'd leave her if she chose to get an education and a job? Sounds like a real jerk, doesn't he? Unfortunately, that guy - the stubborn, insecure, socially conservative misogynist - is the man David Paul Kuhn wants the Democratic party to bend over backwards to please. No matter that his ideology is essentially incompatible with modern liberalism. Ignore the fact that white men are demographic losers, composing just 33-36% of the US electorate, and quickly being overtaken by the burgeoning population of college-educated single women and people of color, both groups that prefer the Democratic party. To Kuhn, the white man is the ...

The War Party can't win the war in Iraq, so they're taking it out on the GOP The ongoing hara-kiri of the GOP proceeds apace, with the latest being a concerted effort by the party's neoconservative wing to oust sitting Republican members of Congress who oppose the war. The latest examples: Walter B. Jones of North Carolina and Wayne Gilchrest of Maryland. Rep. Jones attracted national attention when, at the height of the pre-invasion war hysteria, he led an effort (with now-jailed Rep. Bob Ney) to rename the French fries on the menu in the House cafeteria "Freedom Fries" – and then attracted more serious attention when he turned against the war he had ...

Clinton finds way to play along with Drudge: She plays nice with Web site publisher, former nemesis of Bill Clinton By Jim Rutenberg The New York Times Updated: 4:32 a.m. CT Oct 22, 2007 WASHINGTON - As Senator Barack Obama prepared to give a major speech on Iraq one morning a few weeks ago, a flashing red-siren alert went up on the Drudge Report Web site. It read, “Queen of the Quarter: Hillary Crushes Obama in Surprise Fund-Raising Surge,” and, “$27 Million, Sources Tell Drudge Report.” Within minutes, the Drudge site had injected Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s fund-raising success into the day’s political news on the Internet and cable television. ...

WASHINGTON — Mel Martinez, the public face of the Republican National Committee as its general chairman, announced Friday he was stepping down from his post after serving only 10 months. "I believe that our future as a party and nation is bright and I have every intention of continuing to fight for our president, our party and our candidates," the Florida senator said in a statement. His resignation came months earlier than anticipated. Martinez wasn't expected to step down until a Republican presidential nominee was selected, and the earliest that could occur is February. The RNC said Martinez' job would not be filled. Martinez, a prominent Cuban-American who is ...

And flip-flopping Scientologist Parisian Mitt Romney wants you to know he’s as GOP as it gets when it comes to a man’s love of Tube Steak. Mmmm, nothing like a hot wiener sliding into your mouth on a hot day! The tragic part about this is that Mitt Romney is the only Republican front-runner with anything resembling the “family values” so beloved by the religious wingnuts who show up for the straw polls and primaries and such — the sordid semen-stained infidelities of John ...

ffffuckabees!Huckabee Suggests We All Just Masturbate You know, Mike Huckabee’s not all that bad. Guy likes improving public health, cancer research, being fiscally… good…. Whatever. He’s just adorable sometimes, is the point. But about once a week he throws out a dark, bitter or stupid line — probably all psychological relics from his repressed history as a fattie. Last week, for example, he made a joke on MSNBC about how Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani et al. should slit their wrists because of inflated P/E ratios or something. Now, as HuffPo’s “Off the Bus” blogger Mike Caulfield reports, Huckabee has asked a group in New Hampshire (video ...

Texas Gov. Rick Perry confirmed his support for Rudy Giuliani for president in an appearance in Washington and a telephone press conference with Texas reporters Wednesday morning. Perry’s most pungent statement, though, might have been his renewed disavowal of interest in being a Republican vice presidential nominee. Though he didn’t say never-ever-ever, Perry repeated that he’s happy to remain governor. “I have a really really good job. I love my job,” Perry said. Referring to a recent move out of the Governor’s Mansion so the building can be overhauled, Perry continued: “I just had to move out of the mansion and I’m not looking for another ...

NEW YORK (CNN) — Democratic strategist and CNN analyst James Carville tossed out a provocative idea during a panel discussion on politics Tuesday. Jeb is a younger brother of President Bush. Giuliani: Big Spitter newVideoPlayer("Tonight_Show_Dana_Carvey.flv", 475, 376); Dana Carvey gave away some trade secrets on Leno last week and tells how he arrived at his Giuliani impression: start with Leno, add some Brooklyn thug, a dash of stutter and just a hint of spit. Yes, spit! And it’s really weird because Giuliani does spit. Or does he froth? Anyway, once while complimenting me on my tie, he spit on me (Oh, it’s a Ferragamo—Hey! What the hell?!). It was like shaking my hand and tripping me at the same time. Strange. Seriously, though, has he spit on anyone else, or is it just me?
