> GOP Wants Insiders to Staff OutsidersLeaders Recruiting Top Aides for New Members By Jackie Kucinich and Anna Palmer Roll Call Staff Oct. 26, 2010, 12 a.m. In anticipation of major GOP gains in next week’s elections, House Republican leaders have put together a list of experienced Washington hands to help fill top staff positions for the surge of newly elected outsiders. Leading the effort are Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio), Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) and the National Republican Congressional Committee. The leaders have put together a list of about 75 to 80 potential chiefs of staff, including current and former Capitol Hill staffers and lobbyists who have been ...

I Wish I Could Vote

I Wish I Could Voteby David Calderwoodby David Calderwood Recently by David Calderwood: From Where Comes Consent?    Honestly. I watch people line up at the church in my neighborhood, the one that volunteers its facility to enable convenient voting, and I long for a world where I could just go into a little folding booth every couple years and cast my vote to put some wise folks in charge of the society that I share. It sounds so nice and simple, doesn’t it? Just yesterday a woman running for Illinois Treasurer promised me that if given the power of that office she’ll reverse Illinois’ horrific unemployment problem by forcing banks that were recipients of ...

Residents of Portland, Maine will soon vote on giving voting rights to foreign nationals Portland, Maine Photo: Ken Gallager On November 2, Portland residents will vote on a ballot measure to give non-citizens the legal right to vote in local elections. The League of Young Voters is behind the proposal, as they gathered thousands of signatures earlier in the year to force a ballot initiative. The group had until July 14th to collect 5,000 signatures. Portland is home to about 7,000 foreign nationals, mostly from Sudan and Somalia. In March, Will Everitt of the League of Young Voters told WCSH News: “They are here, they are going to our public schools, and the city gets federal ...

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), a 1.6 million member public sector union, has taken the lead as the biggest outside campaign spender in the 2010 election cycle, the Wall Street Journal reports. AFSCME is contributing a combined $87.5 million to support democratic candidates in the upcoming election, it confirmed to CBS News. It now leads prominent conservative groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the Rove-supported American Crossroads in expenditures on the campaign, according to the Journal. Critics of heavy political expenditures by public-sector unions argue that taxpayers are essentially footing the bill for these contributions, as they ...

Aldermen lose interest in running for mayor Most who showed initial enthusiasm decide they are unwilling to risk their jobs By Kristen Mack and John Chase, Tribune reporters October 16, 2010 Within minutes of Mayor Richard Daley's bombshell pronouncement last month that he would not run for re-election, nearly a dozen aldermen flirted with the idea of ascending the political ladder from City Hall's second-floor council chambers to the mayor's office on five. But as the weeks have passed, the stream of aldermen willing to step up has fallen off. On Friday, the number dwindled again as the City Council's dean, Ald. Ed Burke, 14th, said he'd rather run for re-election. ...

Tea Party Tory

Before the Tea Party philosophy is ever even tested in America, it will have succeeded, or it will have failed, in Great Britain. For in David Cameron the Brits have a prime minister who can fairly be described as a Tea Party Tory. Casting aside the guidance of Lord Keynes— government-induced deficits are the right remedy for recessions— Cameron has bet his own and his party's future on the new austerity. He is making Maggie Thatcher look like Tip O'Neill. Two headlines Thursday testify that the Tories have seized the Tea Party banner. First was the headline in The Washington Times, "Tea Party Urges Drastic Cutting," that carried a caveat subhead, ...

Two Numbers Behind Voters' Sour Mood

Understanding this year's big midterm election isn't so hard after all.Two numbers from a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll—46 and 48—tell you all you need to know. The first is the percentage of voters who think the health-care overhaul was a bad idea, which shows how that legislative achievement has never become the asset Democrats hoped. Instead, for some Democrats at least, the milestone has become more of a millstone. The second number is the percentage of voters who say they would rather elect a congressional candidate with no experience whatsoever than one with 10 years of experience. That sentiment illustrates the rise of the tea-party movement and the ...

Barney Frank gives $200K to his campaign Longtime Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank has given his re-election campaign $200,000 as he faces his toughest race in years. A campaign finance report filed Tuesday showed that Frank, the chairman of the powerful House Financial Services committee, lent himself the money Tuesday. Frank, a 15-term lawmaker from Newton, Mass., raised $316,644 last quarter and reported more than $1 million on hand with no debts. His campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The chairman is facing one of his toughest fights in recent memory against Republican Sean Bielat, a 35-year-old Marine veteran with degrees from Georgetown, Harvard and ...

Tancredo relegates Constitution Party as a mere 'marriage of convenience', disses Sarah Palin

L.A. County Libertarian Examinerhttp://www.examiner.com/la-county-libertarian-in-los-angeles/tancredo-relegates-constitution-party-as-a-marriage-of-convenience-disses-sarah-palin Former GOP Rep. Tom Tancredo is gloating over results of a recent poll which indicates that he may indeed become governor of Colorado. A recent Rasmussen Poll revealed that Tancredo was dwarfing the Republican candidate, making the race a contest between Democrat John Hickenlooper and the former GOP Congressman. Tancredo, known for his strict advocacy of immigration control, left the Republicans and switched his affiliation to the Constitution Party in order to run for governor. According to the recent poll, ...

Establishment Republicans Poised to Take Control of House from Establishment Democrats

Desperate to turn the tide rising against Obama and the Democrats, Ryan Rudominer, a DCCC spokesman, told Politico the ranks of resurgent Republicans include candidates with ties to organized crime, a Nazi enthusiast, and one being sued for attempted rape and sexual assault. “So for all the Republicans’ popping the champagne and the countless millions spent in secret funds from shady right wing groups, they haven’t been able to close the deal in their targeted races, and that’s why Democrats will win,” Rudominer confidently boasted. The non-partisan Cook Political Report, however, predicts a GOP net gain of at least 40 House seats, with 90 Democratic seats in ...

Tom Tancredo scoffs at global warming, yet vows to appoint 'clean air, clean job' zealot to key post

There is a fascinating development in the race for Colorado governor which reveals either the shocking ignorance, or devious duplicity of former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo. Tancredo has long scoffed at the idea of man made global warming and climate change, addressing fears of global warming with the line "We have a position, its bull****.” Yet Tancredo has promised, if elected governor, to appoint a Colorado Senator who voted for the the controversial and much opposed 'clean air, clean jobs act' to head the State's Dept of Natural Resources. Tancredo, who recently switched parties and is running under the Constituion Party label, issued a press release which stated, in ...

Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate's Name Misspelled As 'Rich Whitey' On Electronic-Voting Machines

There are typos and then there are complete and utter catastrophes. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the name of Green Party gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney is misspelled "Rich Whitey" on electronic-voting machines in 23 wards -- "about half in predominantly African-American areas." The error only occurs on screens voters would see when they are reviewing their choices (Whitney's name appears correctly on the initial screens), but officials say the error cannot be corrected before election day. Jim Allen, spokesman for the Chicago Board of Elections, told the Sun-Times he expects 90% of votes on election day to be cast on paper ballots -- minimizing the ...

Another Republican Star Born: Raises Most in House Races

If money is any indication, the hottest Republican House candidate in the country is Kristi Noem. The 38-year-old rancher has raised more campaign cash than any Republican house challenger in the country. Noem has raised $1.1 million over the past three months, about twice as much as her opponent, Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin (D-SD). And that money will go a long way: South Dakota's media market is one of the least expensive in the country. 2010 Election Maps: Follow the Senate, House and Governors' Races Noem may need the cash. Herseth-Sandlin is a moderate Democrat with a proven ability to win, and win big, in South Dakota. She decimated her Republican opponent in 2008 with ...

Landing in the email box today, the following from a loyal and attentive listener: "You've commented on how Republicans in the majority never reverse the legislative damage done by the previous Democratic congress – but you’ve never said why. Why?" ~ Inquisitive In Toledo Dear Inq To understand why, we have to set the Wayback Machine to 1912 and meet the progressive tag team of King Roosevelt the First and Woodrow the Evil. I wrote Christine O’Donnell’s 2005 Lawsuit: Liberals are lying & smearing by claiming Christine O’Donnell Lied

Liberal elites continue to bash Delaware’s Cinderella-like U.S. Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell, as part of a nation-wide campaign to smear all Republicans. One false narrative is that she misrepresented her academic background. They build that lie on completely distorting the lawsuit that I wrote for Christine in 2005, as a Virginia attorney. Saul Alinsky radicals assert the exact opposite of what my lawsuit said, hoping no one will read it. They claim that Christine claimed to already be enrolled in a Princeton Master’s program in 2005. Building on that falsehood, they then claim that minor differences in wording elsewhere are “yet another” example of ...

The most effective and most unchallenged form of human control is that Which the population doesn't see. Who is going to rebel about not being free When they think they are? Key to that illusion of freedom is the illusion of choice. Once people Realise they have no choice in the force and agenda that governs their society The penny drops that they live in a one-party state, a tyranny. The task of any Control System, therefore, which has ambitions for long Term pre-eminence, is to maintain the façade of political choice and central To this is 'the people's right to vote'. This is seen as the ultimate confirmation of a 'free' society - people can Cast their ...
