Phoenix will not host the National Republican Convention in 2012, another blow to the state already besieged with financial problems and an economic boycott. Tampa was awarded the convention. Phoenix was a finalist along with Salt Lake City and Tampa. Millions were at stake. The convention where President Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination generated $266 million in economic spending in the region, according to a Denver study. Arizona Republicans estimated that the event could have brought as much as $200 million in convention revenue to Phoenix, and that they would push for Phoenix to host the 2016 convention. The GOP convention will be held the week of Aug. 27. Members of the ...

Is Obama’s Supreme Court pick Elena Kagan independent? Hardly– She is a bankster operative who sat on a Goldman Sachs advisory council between 2005 and 2008. Democrats are going gaa-gaa over Obama’s Supreme pick Elena Kagan. “Democrats praised Kagan as ‘razor sharp’ and impeccably qualified for the lifetime appointment on the nine-member bench, but Republicans promised to vigorously vet a ’surprising’ choice, noting she had never been a judge,” reports Agence France-Presse. “I have selected a nominee who I believe embodies… excellence, independence, integrity and passion for the law, and who can ultimately provide that same kind of ...

Record Number of Jews slated for next U.S. Congress

When the new Congress debuts in January 2009, a record 45 Jews will take the oath of office: 32 in the House of Representatives and - regardless of the outcome in the still-contested Minnesota election - 13 Jews in the Senate. Among the three newcomers to the House are a young, gay, multimillionaire entrepreneur; a seasoned veteran of New Jersey's rough-and-tumble politics, and a wealthy attorney who poured $2 million of his own money into a raucous campaign that now gives him the right to say he represents Mickey Mouse. And even with all that, the record is bittersweet for those who work to elect Jews to public office. Some high-profile races fell short: Losers included Ethan ...

US Sen. Bob Bennett ousted at Utah GOP convention By BROCK VERGAKIS, AP SALT LAKE CITY — Republican Sen. Bob Bennett was thrown out of office Saturday by delegates at the Utah GOP convention in a stunning defeat for a once-popular three-term incumbent who fell victim to a growing conservative movement nationwide. Bennett's failure to make it into Utah's GOP primary — let alone win his party's nomination — makes him the first congressional incumbent to be ousted this year and demonstrates the challenges candidates face from the right in 2010. "The political atmosphere obviously has been toxic, and it's very clear that some of the votes that I have cast ...

Is Faisal Shahzad Crazy?

If so, he's far from alone. Amid all the media coverage of the Times Square Fizzler, Faisal Shahzad, we still know very little about the circumstances surrounding his actions. As Rachel Maddow helpfully pointed out on MSNBC Wednesday night, all those leaks about his alleged "links" to the Pakistani Taliban, and other "news" stories purporting to tell us what he’s told investigators, are unsourced, often single-sourced, and subject to the agendas of various factions who want to put their "spin" on the failed attack. What we do know is this: his father, Baharul Haq, is a retired Pakistan air force officer, a former top official of the civil aviation ...

Victor Thorn interviewed Debra Medina’s lawyer, who produced a smoking gun in the railroading of the gubernatorial candidate and darling of the Texas tea party movement. The same week that Victor Thorn exposed Glenn Beck (AFP, April 28, 2010) for the deceitful fraud that he is, this writer interviewed Debra Medina’s lawyer, who produced a smoking gun in the railroading of the gubernatorial candidate and darling of the Texas tea party movement. Ms. Medina, 47, was the little-known, grassroots, constitutional candidate campaigning against two political behemoths—incumbent Rick Perry and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson—for the Republican nomination for governor of Texas. ...

The former U.S. representative from Ohio, who was released from prison last year after serving seven years on bribery, racketeering and other charges, today filed petitions to run for Congress as an independent, according to the Associated Press. Traficant, who served nine terms in Congress as a Democrat, is seeking victory in his old stomping grounds of northeast Ohio. He will challenge Democrat Tim Ryan, who won the seat over Traficant when Traficant attempted to win reelection from federal prison. ...

Sarah Palin Has Earned an Estimated $12 Million Since July

Pundits can debate the political costs and benefits of Sarah Palin's decision to step down as Alaska governor, but the monetary advantages of leaving her $125,000-a-year public service post are beyond dispute. Since leaving office at the end of July 2009, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee has brought in at least 100 times her old salary – a haul now estimated at more than $12 million -- through television and book deals and a heavy schedule of speaking appearances worth five and six figures. That conservative estimate is based on publicly available records and news accounts. The actual number is probably much higher, but is hard to quantify because Palin does not ...

Heart of McDarkness

The latest bunker mentality bunk to emanate from Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, is that he has too many civilian contractors hoofing around on his turf. Back in June 2009, a "civilian surge" was a key component of his strategy. What made him change his mind? Maybe his attitude adjustment has something to do with the recent announcement that five former Blackwater employees, including former president Gary Jackson and former vice-presidents William M. Mathews Jr. and Ana Bundy, have been indicted on charges of illegally obtaining automatic weapons and then lying about it. Also indicted was former Blackwater general counsel Andrew Howell. ...

Establishment Terrified by Tea Party Movement Matt Towery Thursday, April 15, 2010 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Whenever I'm in the nation's capital, it's always entertaining to see government staff, aides, lobbyists and elected officials doing their thing. They can make you feel like an outsider -- unless, that is, you were there when Ronald Reagan was sworn in, doing then as they are doing now. Then you realize that they're just younger versions of yourself. With age and experience comes a trace of wisdom. In talking to various Washington insiders over the last few days, I've noticed a predominant theme: The GOP establishment hasn't a clue how to manage the so-called Tea ...

Scott Brown snubs Sarah Palin, bags Tea Party rally By Edward "3rd degree" Mason Monday, April 12, 2010 U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, whose stunning victory in January was fueled in part by Tea Party anger, has snubbed the fiery grassroots group and declined its invitation to join Sarah Palin Wednesday at a massive rally on Boston Common, the Herald has learned. Brown’s decision to skip the first big rally in Boston by the group whose members are credited with helping him win election has some experts saying he’s tossed the Tea Party overboard, as he prepares for re-election in 2012. “He wants to mainstream himself before the election,” said Larry Sabato, a ...

Why Politics Is Not the Answer

This is Chapter 3 of Direct Citizen Action: How We Can Win the Second American Revolution Without Firing a Shot “He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.” ~ Sun Tzu There are three basic approaches to changing public policy: politics (elections and lobbying), direct citizen action and violence. We can quickly rule out violence as morally repugnant, inefficient and unpredictable. Political action has rarely in human history caused government to shrink in size and power. The natural tendency of government is to grow and expand its powers. The events of 2008–2010 illustrate that. Over time, it will tend to tax and spend more, hire more people and assume ...

The Oklahoma City Bombing: 30 Unanswered Questions From Team Infinity TeamInfinity.com/ Despite Timothy McVeigh's guilty verdict, numerous unanswered questions about the murderous Oklahoma City bombing remain. Indeed, there are so many unanswered questions, it is amazing that the prosecution was able to secure a conviction at all. So pull up a front-row seat for the McVeigh lynching, folks, and contemplate a few of the contradictions in the official account of the OKC bombing before it all gets flushed down the memory hole. 1. If the bombing of the Alfred E. Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City was a terrorist reprisal for the Federal massacre of the Branch Davidians at Waco, why ...

GOP wary of push for health law repeal in fall races by CHARLES BABINGTON and PHILIP ELLIOTT Associated Press Writers Originally printed at www.katu.com/news/national/89603022.html WASHINGTON (AP) - Top Republicans are increasingly worried that GOP candidates this fall might be burned by a fire that's roaring through the conservative base: demand for the repeal of President Barack Obama's new health care law. It's fine to criticize the health law and the way Democrats pushed it through Congress without a single GOP vote, these party leaders say. But focusing on its outright repeal carries two big risks. Repeal is politically and legally unlikely, and grass-roots activists ...

Growing 'Frustration' With Steele Inside RNC

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele "allowed a certain climate to exist" that resulted in the committee paying for a now infamous visit to a Los Angeles strip club, a senior RNC committeeman told Fox News. Steele's critics point to the strip club story as another in a series of controversies in which his leadership has been found wanting. The chairman's office has rejected such flak as unwarranted by the facts in the case. RNC spokesman Doug Heye also points out that Steele was not at Voyeur, did not have any knowledge of the expenditure and finds the use of committee funds at such a location unacceptable. Publicly filed documents revealed this week ...

Each of the last eight presidents has spoken at the college on their way to victory. It will be the latest in a series of speaking engagements where the head of the US Central Command region, which covers the Middle East and Central Asia, has veered well into foreign policy discussion and often faced questions about his political ambition. His stock response is ...

ALBANY — Fresh off an announcement that jolted the New York political world, Steve Levy, the Long Island Democrat who abandoned his party to run for governor as a Republican, is working to secure endorsements as he tries to gain an edge in the contest for the nomination. His candidacy barely a day old, Mr. Levy, the Suffolk County executive, has already siphoned away the support of several influential county leaders from former Representative Rick A. Lazio, who until this week appeared to be the Republican front-runner. Mr. Levy is preparing to crisscross the state ...

Are there no depths to which conservatives will not sink in their ardent embrace of the war on terrorism? The latest monstrosity from the right came courtesy of Keep America Safe, a toxic organization headed by Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who recently put out a disgraceful TV ad, “Who Are the Al-Qaeda Seven?” The ad questioned the loyalty and patriotism of nine lawyers in the Justice Department who had represented prisoners at Guantánamo before joining the DoJ. To be fair, Liz Cheney’s ad has backfired badly, drawing the ire not only of those on the left, but also of heavyweight conservatives, nineteen of whom signed a statement last ...

Sarah Palin, billed as the Tea Party savior, is now shopping around a reality TV series. “The former governor of Alaska, who currently contributes to Fox News, has been pitching a reality series with producer Mark Burnett in Hollywood this week, Entertainment Weekly reports,” explains TV Guide. The proposed show is described as a “docudrama” on her home state, Alaska. Despite this, Palin’s handlers expect us to regard her as a serious politician. Last month, she was the keynote speaker at the Tea Party convention at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville. People plunked down $549 to bask in the aura of Palin and other Republican celebrities who insist they ...

March 3 (Bloomberg) -- Texas Governor Rick Perry, who led lawmakers in closing a 2003 budget deficit, won the Republican primary after U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison conceded last night. Republican voters in the second most-populous U.S. state chose Perry, 59, the longest-serving governor in Texas history, by a margin of about 51 percent to 31 percent, against Hutchison, with 51 percent of precincts reporting, according to returns posted on the Secretary of State’s Web site. Debra Medina, 47, a Tea Party movement activist, won 18 percent of the Republican vote. The winner needed more than 50 percent to avoid a runoff. Hutchison, 66, offered Perry her support in her televised ...
