A Joe of His Own?
Post Date: 2008-08-27 00:03:46 by christine

The anguished cries of Hillary supporters pierced the midday calm here on Saturday, as Barack Obama confirmed that his vice presidential choice was not Clinton, who got about 18 million votes this year running against him, but rather Joe Biden, who gained the support of a few thousand caucusgoers in Iowa before dropping out of the race. (OK, I didn’t personally hear any anguished cries from my work space near the Pepsi Center. But I’m an empathetic guy — I felt as if I could hear them.) McCain operatives were pleased by the Biden selection, which they considered, as one said to me, “a pick from weakness.” Still, it complicates McCain’s vice presidential ...

Clinton die-hards voice anger in convention protest

DENVER, Colorado (AFP) — Defiant Hillary Clinton loyalists marched through Denver Tuesday to vent anger at the outcome of the bitter Democratic primary race in a final show of support for their beaten idol. Just hours before Clinton was to address Democrats in a speech that party grandees hope will heal the schism caused by the nominating battle, more than 1,000 supporters of the former first lady paid vocal tribute to her campaign. Despite the calls for a unified front heading into November's presidential election, it is clear that some of Clinton's supporters will never be able to forgive Barack Obama for his hard-fought victory. "We're here to say thank you to ...

Joe Biden's Awful Record on Drug Policy

Among the likely choices for Obama's running mate, Joe Biden was not the person reformers were hoping to see on the democratic ticket. Radley Balko sums up Biden's drug war credentials: …from a policy perspective, it’s a disaster. Biden has sponsored more damaging drug war legislation than any Democrat in Congress. Hate the way federal prosecutors use RICO laws to take aim at drug offenders? Thank Biden. How about the abomination that is federal asset forfeiture laws? Thank Biden. Think federal prosecutors have too much power in drug cases? Thank Biden. Think the title of a “Drug Czar” is sanctimonious and silly? Thank Biden, who helped create the position ...

Barack Obama and the exercise of free speech

Barack Obama did a double-twist on free speech yesterday in reaction to the ad produced by an outside political group regarding his association with William Ayers. After his own campaign produced an ad that Factcheck called a “smear” tying Jack Abramoff to John McCain through Ralph Reed, American Issues produced an ad that pointed out Obama’s political ties to the unrepentant former domestic terrorist, William Ayers. Instead of letting it drop, Obama’s campaign took two really stupid actions: they produced a response ad and then demanded that the Department of Justice investigate American Issues while pressuring television stations to reject the ad: Obama’s ...

Obama Seeks to Silence Ad Tying Him to 60s Radical Barack Obama is striking back fiercely and swiftly to stamp out an ad that links him to a 1960s radical, eager to demonstrate a far more aggressive response to attacks than John Kerry did when faced with the 2004 "Swift Boat" campaign. Obama not only aired a response ad to the spot linking him to William Ayers, but he sought to block stations the commercial by warning station managers and asking the Justice Department to intervene. The campaign also planned to compel advertisers to pressure stations that continue to air the anti-Obama commercial. It's the type of going-for-the-jugular approach to politics many ...

If Obama Loses Racism is the only reason McCain might beat him. By Jacob Weisberg Posted Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at 12:02 AM ET What with the Bush legacy of reckless war and economic mismanagement, 2008 is a year that favors the generic Democratic candidate over the generic Republican one. Yet Barack Obama, with every natural and structural advantage in the presidential race, is running only neck-and-neck against John McCain, a sub-par Republican nominee with a list of liabilities longer than a Joe Biden monologue. Obama has built a crack political operation, raised record sums, and inspired millions with his eloquence and vision. McCain has struggled with a fractious campaign team, ...

Biden Means Business As Usual What 'new politics'? by Justin Raimondo August 25, 2008 To anyone who really believed Barack Obama's candidacy represented "hope" and "change," the selection of Joe Biden as his running mate should put that illusion to rest. Antiwar activists point to Biden's vote in favor of authorizing Bush to go to war with Iraq, but even worse was his behavior in the run-up to the invasion. Today he wails that he didn't know, that nobody knew the truth about Iraq's alleged "weapons of mass destruction," but it cannot be said that Biden was all that eager to discover the truth, either. As chairman of the Senate Foreign ...

JOSEPH BIDEN: LIAR, CHEAT, TRAITOR?

Back on December 18, 2006, I wrote a column on Joseph Biden's decision to once again run for president. Biden has now been tapped as Marxist Barack Hussein Obama's choice for vice-president. One columnist wrote this was akin to a Watergate suicide. Biden was dropped like a hot potato by the DNC in 1998 when he ran for president because Biden was exposed as a liar and cheat, although now it seems to be a qualifier for both the Democrat and Republican parties. I'm not a Republican and I would never vote a despicable person like Juan McCain. Like Obama, Biden plagiarized someone else's speech. Biden also plagiarized in law school; NY Times article back in 1987. Some boob tube ...

Tensions boil between Obama-Clinton camps

As Democrats arrived here Sunday for a convention intended to promote party unity, mistrust and resentments continued to boil among top associates of presumptive nominee Barack Obama and his defeated rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton. One flashpoint is the assigned speech topic for former president Bill Clinton, who is scheduled to speak Wednesday night, when the convention theme is “Securing America’s Future.” The night’s speakers will argue that Obama would be a more effective commander in chief than his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain (Ariz.). The former president is disappointed, associates said, because he is eager to speak about the economy and more broadly about ...

McCain Advocates Military Tactics in U.S. Neighborhoods Written by Ann Shibler Thursday, 14 August 2008 14:11 When asked a question about his approach to combating crime, presidential hopeful John McCain laid his cards out on the table for all to see. The question on how to combat crime on city streets came during McCain’s Urban League appearance. ABC’s David Wright reported that McCain suggested that military strategies be applied to high crime neighborhoods in the United States. “You go into neighborhoods, you clamp down, you provide a secure environment for the people that live there, and you make sure that the known criminals are kept under control," McCain ...

Analysis: Obama, McCain woo white voters The Associated Press Sun, Aug 24, 2008 (4:18 p.m.) Barack Obama's selection of a running mate, the stagecraft of his nominating convention and Republican rival John McCain's ad to stir up Democratic trouble all have a target. White America. The candidates are going after those white working-class voters who are still up for grabs in their tightly fought campaign. From polls the candidates know many of these voters are skeptical of the first-term senator who will become the first black presidential nominee of a major party. Obama's convention is aimed to tell them that he shares their values and has a truly American story, even if he ...

If I Were President by Chuck Baldwin

Due to my frequent criticisms of President George W. Bush, I am often asked what I would do if I were President of these United States. This column will serve as an attempt to answer that question. If I were President, I would begin the process of safely extracting our troops from Iraq. In the first place, our troops are no longer fighting a war, they are an occupation force, which occupies a sovereign country. And this is being done without a Declaration of War. The Iraqi people resent our occupation as much as we would resent another nation stronger than ours invading and occupying America. If such a thing happened to our beloved country, I'm sure many of us would also become ...

The Good: For years, Sen. Biden (D-DE) has been calling for the prison camp at Guantanamo to be shut down, saying it has “become the greatest propaganda tool that exists for recruiting of terrorists around the world.” Biden says the prisoners should be moved to the maximum security military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He has cosponsored legislation that would release all Guantanamo prisoners who have not been charged. This would mean releasing nearly all the prisoners. Biden voted against the Military Commissions Act. Sen. Biden (D-DE), who was in the Senate at the passage of FISA in 1978, spoke out against Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program, which he called ...

I. FACTUAL BACKGROUND Since the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, in order to serve as President, one must be a “natural born citizen” and may not hold dual citizenship or multiple citizenships with foreign Countries. U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1. There appears to be no question but that Defendant Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, was a U.S. citizen. It is also undisputed, however, that his father, Barack Obama,Sr., was a citizen of Kenya. Obama’s parents, according to divorce records, were married on or about February 2, 1961. Defendant Obama claims he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961 and it is uncertain in which hospital he claims to ...

DENVER (AP) - The candidate of change went with the status quo. In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weakness - inexperience in office and on foreign policy - rather than underscore his strength as a new-generation candidate defying political conventions. He picked a 35-year veteran of the Senate - the ultimate insider - rather than a candidate from outside Washington, such as Govs. Tim Kaine of Virginia or Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas; or from outside his party, such as Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska; or from outside the mostly white male club of vice presidential candidates. Hillary Rodham Clinton didn't even make his short list. The picks ...

Is Hillary Going For The Kiill At The Denver Convention?

Is Hillary Going For The Kill At The Denver Convention? Alan Hart – Information Clearing House August 22, 2008 According to conventional wisdom Barak Obama agreed, for the sake of party unity, that Hillary Clinton should be “put into nomination” at the Denver Convention, on the understanding that when nominated, and before the first roll call, she would release her delegates to him and urge them to vote for him. That, apparently, is how it’s supposed to happen next Tuesday evening. But is that the way it will happen? The key to understanding what could actually happen is in the fact that Hillary did not withdraw from the race. She announced only that she was ...

(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama has selected Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate, according to his official Web site and a text message the campaign sent to supporters on Saturday. "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee," the text message, sent at around 3 a.m. ET, said. "Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois -- the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago," Obama said in an e-mail sent to supporters Saturday morning. "I'm excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can't do this alone," he wrote. " We need your help to keep ...

Ohio Voting Machines Contained Programming Error That Dropped Votes

A voting system used in 34 states contains a critical programming error that can cause votes to be dropped while being electronically transferred from memory cards to a central tallying point, the manufacturer acknowledges. The problem was identified after complaints from Ohio elections officials following the March primary there, but the logic error that is the root of the problem has been part of the software for 10 years, said Chris Riggall, a spokesman for Premier Election Solutions, formerly known as Diebold. The flawed software is on both touch screen and optical scan voting machines made by Premier and the problem with vote counts is most likely to affect larger jurisdictions that ...

The Deal Breaker (Chet Edwards Obama's VP?)

As we watch our email and text messages for “the announcement” from Barack Obama for the identity of his running mate, most conventional, political wisdom is pointing to one of the following: 1. Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia, 2. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, 3. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, or, 4. Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana. However, there is a rumored dark-horse finalist who, if chosen, will constitute such a grave lapse in judgment that it will represent a deal breaker for me. His name is Rep. Chet Edwards of Texas. From the Left has learned that Edwards’ background was checked by Obama’s campaign and he is a finalist for the job of vice president. If Obama puts Rep. ...

First published 07/15/2008 14:19 by {article_topic_desc}   Barack Obama is not a left candidate. This fact has seemingly surprised a number of progressive people who are bemoaning Obama’s “shift to the center.” (Right-wingers are happy to join them, suggesting Obama is a “flip-flopper.”) It’s sad that some who seek progressive change are missing the forest for the trees. But they will not dampen the wide and deep enthusiasm for blocking a third Bush term represented by John McCain, or for bringing Obama by a landslide into the White House with a large Democratic congressional majority. A broad multiclass, multiracial movement is converging ...

Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, will deliver the invocation at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on Aug. 28, 2008. WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Jewish voters and organizations often are among the first to object when Republicans and Christian conservatives inject religion into politics. But this year, especially at their convention next week, the Democrats are jumping into the religion game -- and looking to rabbis for help. Religious leaders -- among them at least seven rabbis -- are expected to play an unprecedented role at this year’s Democratic convention in Denver. The convention is kicking off with a multifaith gathering ...

The following are excerpts taken from a story by Chris Akiri in Nigeria's Guardian newspaper. The report was published on Thursday, Aug. 14: I witnessed the launch, on Friday, July 18, 2008, of the Africans for Obama 2008 group, which, for the time being, at least, is said to be a non-profit-making and non-governmental organisation, masterminded by the ebullient and versatile lady, Prof. Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, PhD, OON, chairman of Transcorp and Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, a Federal Government parastatal. Survey finds hunters, anglers favor John McCain 2:27 PM, August 21, 2008 A survey has found that John McCain holds a considerable lead over Barack Obama in the race to become president — among hunters and fishermen. Given that there are an estimated 40 million hunters and fishermen of voting age in the United States, there’s some significance to their thinking and it may have helped the current president win two terms. We all know what happened during the second term: the vice president, on one of his hunting trips, accidentally filled a fellow hunter full of birdshot. But that’s beside the point. The point is, many Americans consider hunting and fishing — and ...
