The Creeks Rise Post Date: 2008-07-15 06:59:00 by Ada

The only presidential poll that matters is the one on Election Day, when voters will put an end to what seems like an endless campaign. I don't see much point in speculating about who's ahead on this or that day or parsing every word the candidates utter. All we know for certain is that on Nov. 4, either Barack Obama or John McCain will become the president-elect, God willing and the Creeks don't rise. None of the minor candidates on the ballot has a chance. If you wish to waste a vote on one of them and it makes you feel better, go ahead, but the man who will affect your life during the next four years will be either Obama or McCain. Neither man has much executive experience. ...

Nurney Mason opened his barbershop in 1961, and since then he has witnessed a lifetime of changes outside his window on H Street in the US capital. Now he hopes Barack Obama can deliver even more. "I think he's it," says Mason, describing Obama's bid to become the first black US president as "something ordained from above." "He says he is going to bring about a change. Everyone knows it's time. It's the right time." In this gentrifying city where blacks make up close to 57 percent of the population, predominantly black neighborhoods such as this one are seeing pricey bistros, edgy bars and rock clubs sprout up among the hair braiding salons, ...

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas next week, officials said on Monday. Senior Palestinian diplomat Saeb Erakat confirmed that Obama would visit Abbas in the occupied West Bank town of Ramallah on July 23. "President Abbas welcomes this important visit and considers it evidence of the importance of the Palestinian issue in American foreign policy," he said. Obama will also meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert either on the same day or the previous evening, according to an Israeli official. Both meetings will come after a stopover in Jordan, where Obama will meet King Abdullah ...
DEMOCRATS LOOK TO LOBBYIST TO FINANCE CONVENTION Post Date: 2008-07-14 11:09:28 by rowdee

In terms of lobbyists, few are more connected both west of the Mississippi and in the corridors of power in Washington than Steve Farber, a Denver lawyer whose political contacts have thrust him into a central fund-raising role for the Democratic National Convention. Mr. Farbers vast contact list could prove crucial in raising the millions of dollars needed by the Denver host committee to showcase Senator Barack Obama and the Democratic Party in August in Denver. But Mr. Farbers activities are a public display of how corporate connections fuel politics exactly the type of special influence that Mr. Obama had pledged to expunge from politics when he said he ...
My Plan for Iraq (Obama op ed) Post Date: 2008-07-14 09:39:12 by christine

CHICAGO The call by Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki for a timetable for the removal of American troops from Iraq presents an enormous opportunity. We should seize this moment to begin the phased redeployment of combat troops that I have long advocated, and that is needed for long-term success in Iraq and the security interests of the United States. The differences on Iraq in this campaign are deep. Unlike Senator John McCain, I opposed the war in Iraq before it began, and would end it as president. I believed it was a grave mistake to allow ourselves to be distracted from the fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban by invading a country that posed no imminent threat and had ...

Byline: Their similar stances on immigration, nuclear weapons, global warming and stem-cell research are evidence of a centrist shift in the political landscape. WASHINGTON -- For Amy Rick, the 2008 presidential election is a win-win situation. Both Barack Obama and John McCain support an expansion of stem-cell research that she has battled for in vain under President Bush. "Both are very solid," said Rick, president of the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research. "We are definitely looking forward with optimism to a change in policy in 2009." John Isaacs, an arms control advocate, feels the same way, because both candidates have made nuclear ...
McCain Campaign Pulls Plug on Gramm Post Date: 2008-07-13 17:21:43 by Ferret Mike

Sen. John McCain is definitely done trotting his friend and former Senate colleague Phil Gramm out on the campaign trail, and he is minimizing the Texan's role among his team of advisers. Gramm had played an important part in crafting McCain's economic plan, and he occasionally appeared at rallies or spoke to editorial boards on the presumptive GOP nominee's behalf. But no longer, according to two key McCain advisers, after Gramm told the Washington Times that the country was filled with "whiners" and the United States is merely in a "mental recession." On Friday McCain's domestic policy adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin told Darren Gersh, a PBS "Nightly ...

Barack Obama's vote for a federal surveillance law that he had previously opposed has sparked a backlash from his online advocates, who had energized his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Sen. Barack Obama said he voted for the surveillance bill because it will help protect the nation. In October, Obama had vowed to help filibuster an update of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) that gave telecommunication companies that had cooperated with President Bush's warrantless ...

More than two million angry Democrats are rejecting Sen. Barack Obama as the likely Democratic nominee for the presidency this year, according to a new protest organization. "I hate to use this word but it's fascist, and that's the approach they're taking to silence any Hillary Clinton supporters," Will Bower, co-founder of PUMA/Just Say No Deal, an exploding coalition of voters who say they have raised $10 million in just days to pay down Clinton's campaign debt. "Barack Obama wants to give his acceptance speech in a stadium because he intends to minimize any pro-Hillary supporter dissent. It's not because he wants to include more people. He knows that ...

McCain's Nomination - A Possible September Surprise? - by Stephen Lendman Party conventions are less than two months off, and already rumors are circulating. When the Democrats hold theirs from August 25 - 28, Obama is the virtually sure nominee. According to some, however, things aren't settled for Republicans a week later. Presumptive nominee John McCain may not be as certain as most people think, and why so should be asked. For one thing, he trails in the polls (including in key battleground states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania) but not enough to be worrisome (in most of them), and the latest June Reuters/Zogby one is typical. It shows Obama ahead by about five points, ...

Barack Obama just may be the most regretful figure in American politics, no small feat for a freshman senator. On Wednesday, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said he regretted allowing his young daughters to participate in a family TV interview with "Access Hollywood." down for the interview on July 4, and the first segment ran on July 8. By the next morning, Obama was saying he regretted including his daughters, even before the other two parts of the interview could air. I'm not sure why. The interview was nothing but happy public relations, revealing that the Obamas enjoy riding bikes together and that the senator isn't a big dessert fan. (Pies are an ...

CNN reports:
The Rev. Jesse Jackson issued an apology to Barack Obama Wednesday for making what he called a "crude and hurtful" remark about the Illinois senator's recent comments directed toward some members of the black community.
According to Jackson, a Fox News microphone picked up comments he meant to deliver privately that seemed to disparage the presumptive Democratic nominee for appearing to lecture the black community on morality.
Jackson didn't elaborate on the context of his remarks, except to say he was trying to explain that Obama was hurting his relationship with black voters by recently conducting "moral" lectures at African-American churches.

Carol Kreck, who works as a librarian in Denver, held a homemade sign reading "McCain = Bush." On orders from McCain's security detail, police cited her for trespassing and escorted her to the sidewalk. She was told if she returned she would be arrested. "And all I did was carry a sign that said McCain = Bush," Kreck said. "And ...

The percentage of voters who give Congress good or excellent ratings has fallen to single digits for the first time in Rasmussen Reports tracking history. This month, just 9% say Congress is doing a good or excellent job. Most voters (52%) say Congress is doing a poor job, which ties the record high in that dubious category. Last month, 11% of voters gave the legislature good or excellent ratings. Congress has not received higher than a 15% approval rating since the beginning of 2008. The percentage of Democrats who give Congress positive ratings fell from 17% last month to 13% this month. The number of Democrats who give Congress a poor rating remained unchanged. Among Republicans, 8% ...

A new nationwide poll shows Barack Obama securing a majority of electoral college votes over Republican opponent John McCain in a new state-by-state poll. The Zogby Interactive online survey also shows Libertarian Candidate Bob Barr shaping up as a substantial factor in this year's election, pulling 6 percent of the vote. (He was substantially outperforming then-Green Party candidate Ralph Nader at a similar point in the 2000 campaign) The poll was conducted June 11-30 among more than 46,000 likely voters. If the election were held today, Obama would win 273 electoral votes, enough to hand him the presidency, according to Zogby's tally. McCain would receive 160 electoral votes, ...

Previously, we rated Barack Obama. For details about the Paul-O-Meter see the description. Read on for John McCains scores on the issues. 1. Liberty-based voting record - McCain certainly has some horribly anti-liberty votes, but hes been ok on both gun rights and health care. Certainly not perfect but the case can be made that hes fairly similar to Ron Paul on those issues. Score: 1 2. Federal Reserve and Monetary Policy - ...

Obama is hoping to make another Clinton hire, according to the Washington Post: The Clinton and Obama worlds continue to collide. Patti Solis Doyle, fired as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign manager, started her job last week as chief of staff to Obama's yet-to-be-named vice presidential pick. And Neera Tanden, Clinton's policy czar, is joining the Obama campaign as the head of domestic policy. Now the presumptive nominee hopes to snag John Podesta, Bill Clinton's former White House chief of staff and founding head of the Center for American Progress. According to several Obama sources, the campaign wants Podesta to run the transition operation if Obama wins in ...

Carrier Says Safety of Obama's Plane Was Not in Question July 07, 2008 3:59 PM The National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that it is investigating what caused Senator Barack Obamas plane to make an unexpected landing today in St. Louis. The presumptive Democratic nominee for president was traveling from Chicago to Charlotte when the pilot's first officer announced that they were experiencing controllability issues with the pitch of the MD-80 series aircraft. Those on board were told the issue was a "minor little problem," and the plane remains in St. Louis this afternoon for maintenance. In statements today, the NTSB called the incident "an ...

Obama's plane lands in St. Louis for maintenance Jul 7, 3:36 PM (ET) By LIZ SIDOTI ST. LOUIS (AP) - The airplane carrying Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama made a precautionary landing in St. Louis on Monday after the crew had a problem keeping the nose up on takeoff from Chicago. The plane, an MD-80 Midwest charter, struggled to keep the nose at the necessary angle, as it left for Charlotte, N.C., the pilot said. Later, Midwest Airlines said the problem developed because an emergency slide located in the tail cone of the plane deployed in flight and never threatened the safety of the flight. The National Transportation Safety Board said it planned to investigate the ...
