Why Obama's Support For FISA Cave-In Is Such A Downer (my comment: is the bloom coming off the rose? ) Post Date: 2008-06-20 22:44:16 by christine

Here's what's so dispiriting about it. One of the riveting things about Barack Obama's candidacy is that since the outset of the campaign he's seemed absolutely dead serious about changing the way foreign policy is discussed and argued about in this country. Time and again, in his debates with Hillary, and now with John McCain, his whole debate posture on national security issues was centered on the idea that he could challenge and change what it means to talk "tough." His candidacy has long seemed to embody a conviction that Democrats can win arguments with Republicans about national security -- that if Dems stick to a set of core principles, and forcefully argue ...
Hagel says he'd consider VP offer from Obama Post Date: 2008-06-20 20:24:16 by christine

OMAHA, Neb. - Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel said Friday he would consider serving as Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's running mate if asked, but he doesn't expect to be on any ticket. Hagel's vocal criticism of the Bush administration since the 2003 invasion of Iraq has touched off speculation that if Obama were to pick a Republican running mate, it might be Hagel. Hagel said in an interview with The Associated Press that after devoting much of his life to his country in the Senate and the U.S. Army he would have to consider any offer. "If it would occur, I would have to think about it," Hagel said. "I think anybody, anybody would ...

Webb splits with Obama over drilling By J. Taylor Rushing Posted: 06/19/08 07:46 PM [ET] By pushing a bill that distances himself from the Democratic Party and its presidential candidate on offshore drilling, Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia is picking a curious time to exercise his well-known independence. Webb wants his home state to have the right to explore for energy off Virginias coast. His staff insists his proposal pertains only to natural gas, and not oil, and that it is completely in line with the states other two leading Democrats Gov. Tim Kaine and former Gov. Mark Warner, who is running for Senate. Yet by attaching his name to the bill, sponsored by Sen. John ...

CHICAGO - Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama's campaign announced Friday that he will campaign with former rival Hillary Rodham Clinton next week, a step toward unifying a fractured Democratic Party after a bruising primary fight. Obama's campaign said in a brief e-mail that said the two senators and former opponents will campaign together for the first time on Friday, June 27, and more details would be forthcoming. A day earlier, Obama and Clinton also plan to meet in Washington with some of her top contributors in an effort to calm donors who remain frustrated with Obama's presidential campaign. The former first lady will introduce Obama to her financial backers. ...

WASHINGTON - Former Sens. John Edwards and Sam Nunn are on a list of potential running mates for Democrat Barack Obama, a congresswoman said Thursday, one day after she met with the team Obama has reviewing possible candidates. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, said members of her caucus asked her to forward the names of Edwards and Nunn when she met Wednesday with Obama's vice presidential search team. The team, Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, indicated the two were on the list. "We've been brainstorming in the Congressional Black Caucus. Former Senator Sam Nunn's name has come up, as well as John Edwards' name has ...

With former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Warren Christopher and former Defense Secretary William Perry signing on to a panel already heavy with former Clinton ...

Obama Eyes a Running Mate Who Confers With McCain General James Jones Is Known Equally for Diplomatic Skills, Military Acumen By RUSSELL BERMAN, Staff Reporter of the Sun June 19, 2008 WASHINGTON When the advisers tapped by Senator Obama to find a vice president met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, one name that leaked out was that of a former NATO commander, General James Jones. But yesterday, as the presumptive Democratic nominee held briefings in Washington with dozens of military and foreign policy advisers, General Jones was not there. Instead, he was in Missouri, sitting on an energy security panel convened by Mr. Obama's Republican rival, Senator McCain, who praised ...
Media's candidate quandary (Larry Sinclair to appear at National Press Club tomorrow?) Post Date: 2008-06-19 10:07:42 by christine

THE Washington media is about to be consumed by a new debate over Barack Obama. The question is, to what extent should they air scandalous claims about the presumptive Democratic nominee when the man making them appears at a press conference at the National Press Club tomorrow? Larry Sinclair, of Minnesota, became famous or rather, infamous when he posted a YouTube video last year, alleging that he and Senator Obama used cocaine together and participated in homosexual acts in 1999. According to Mr Sinclair, the liaison occurred in the back of a "limo" during Senator Obama's time in the Illinois Senate. But beyond that, Mr Sinclair has been vague about dates ...

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) announced Thursday morning that he will not accept public financing for the general election, a move that will give him a major advantage over Republican standard-bearer Sen. John McCain (Ariz.). Obama, who called the current system broken, made the announcement via a web video that was sent out to his supporters and the media. The Illinois senator, who has already shattered every fundraising record during the primary, said because Republicans accept money from lobbyists, and given the influence of outside 527 groups, he has decided not to accept the more than $84 million he would receive from public financing. The public ...

Barack Obama and the Comfort Room Post Date: 2008-06-18 21:31:48 by Horse

In March 2002, then Illinois state Sen. Barack Obama and I engaged in an interesting exchange during my testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which he was a member. I was speaking in favor of the Illinois Born Alive Infant Protection Act for the second time, which had failed the year before. The previous year, I had told Obama and the committee of my experience holding a live aborted baby until he died in my capacity as a labor and delivery nurse at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill. That year, I described Christ Hospital's Comfort Room, unveiled in December 2000 to counter my public statements that personnel were shelving babies to die in the department's soiled ...

Obama: NAFTA not so bad after all The Democratic nominee, in an interview with Fortune, says he wants free trade "to work for all people." By Nina Easton, Washington editor WASHINGTON (Fortune) -- The general campaign is on, independent voters are up for grabs, and Barack Obama is toning down his populist rhetoric - at least when it comes to free trade. In an interview with Fortune to be featured in the magazine's upcoming issue, the presumptive Democratic nominee backed off his harshest attacks on the free trade agreement and indicated he didn't want to unilaterally reopen negotiations on NAFTA. "Sometimes during campaigns the rhetoric gets overheated and ...

Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women's headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.
The campaign has apologized to the women, all Obama supporters who said they felt betrayed by their treatment at the rally.
"This is of course not the policy of the campaign. It is offensive and counter to Obama's commitment to bring Americans together and simply not the kind of campaign we run," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. "We sincerely apologize for the behavior of these volunteers."

June 18 (Bloomberg) -- Democrat Barack Obama is leading Republican John McCain in Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio, the first time he's had an advantage in all three electoral battleground states, a Quinnipiac University poll found. Obama got a boost in support after securing the Democratic nomination in the final round of primaries June 3 and following the departure of Senator Hillary Clinton from the race, said Peter A. Brown, assistant director for the Hamden, Connecticut, university's polling institute. ``Obama is certainly not out of the woods, but these results are a good indication that he enters the summer slightly ahead in the race to be the next president,'' Brown ...

Michelle Obama's eyes flicker tentatively even as she offers a trained smile. As her campaign plane arcs over the Flathead Range in Montana, she is asked to consider her complicated public image. Conservative columnists accuse her of being unpatriotic and say she simmers with undigested racial anger. A blogger who supported Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton circulates unfounded claims that Obama gave an accusatory speech in her church about the sins of "whitey." Obama shakes her head. "You are amazed sometimes at how deep the lies can be," she says in an interview. Referring to a character in a 1970s sitcom, she adds: "I mean, 'whitey'? That's ...

The Hard Choice Obama and the Fall Into Tyranny By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS As articles by John Pilger, Alexander Cockburn, and Uri Avnery make clear, by groveling before the Israel Lobby Obama has dispelled any hope that his presidency would make a difference. Obama told the Lobby that in order to protect Israel he would use all the powers of the presidency to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon. As in the case of Saddam Husseins weapons of mass destruction, the conclusion whether or not Iran is making a nuclear weapon will be determined by propaganda and not by fact. Therefore, there is no difference between Bush, McCain, Obama, and the Lobby with regard to the ...

WASHINGTON What if they held an election and nobody came? Some political analysts believe the 2008 presidential election could be historic in its levels of non-participation at least insofar as the two major-party candidates are concerned. With one of five Hillary Clinton supporters saying they are unlikely to vote for Barack Obama and deep dissatisfaction in Republican ranks for the nominee of their party, third party candidates have the best chance in years of scoring significant vote tallies. But is it a "waste of a vote" to cast a protest ballot for someone other than a Republican or Democratic presidential candidate? No, says Joseph Farah, editor of WND, who ...

When the Republicans choose their candidate on September 4th, there is a very real chance that they could throw the election into an unexpected chaos as they pull a genuine September Surprise. I think there is every reason to believe John McCain won't be the nominee. Ok, let me say that again. McCain will not be the Republican candidate in November. Here's how it could happen: At some point in mid August, John McCain will announce that he has decided that he can not accept his party's nomination for president. The reason will be health-related, and that may turn out to be the truth. Anyone who's seen him on stage these days knows he looks like he's about to keel over. ...

Though the precise timetable is still being developed, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee appears poised to test his burgeoning international cachet with a tour of European capitals that is expected to extend to precision stops in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Don't be surprised if you see Obama on the 4th of July in Baghdad or Kabul, with stops in London and Paris on the way back and possibly more cities as well," a Paris-based source familiar with the efforts of his advance team told the Toronto Star. Three French government officials ...

Suffice it to say that I disagree with pretty much everything that Steve has to say -- from his position on Larry Sinclair to his insistence (three days after the Montana and South Dakota primaries and one day after Clinton announced that she would concede) that the Democratic nomination race was "far from over", to his calling Tom Shales, the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize- winning media critic, a "cretin". ...

Barack Obamas vice presidential vetting team will undoubtedly run across some quirky and potentially troublesome issues as it goes about the business of scouring the backgrounds of possible running mates. But its unlikely theyll find one so curious as Virginia Democratic Sen. Jim Webbs affinity for the cause of the Confederacy. Webb is no mere student of the Civil War era. Hes an author, too, and hes left a trail of writings and statements about one of the rawest and most sensitive topics in American history. He has suggested many times that while the Confederacy is a symbol to many of the racist legacy of slavery and segregation, for others it simply ...
