Americans still wary of voting machines for 2008 Post Date: 2008-03-23 20:33:40 by richard9151

Sun Mar 23, 1:15 PM ET WASHINGTON (AFP) - Eight years after glitches marred the 2000 presidential elections, Americans are still struggling over voting machine technology amid growing concerns about the reliability of electronic systems. Many jurisdictions are reconsidering new technology and moving away from paperless and touch-screen voting machines -- systems which had been seen as a cure for the problems of punch cards that notably failed to correctly tally votes in 2000 in Florida. A growing movement of activists, including many computer scientists, are leading calls to shift away from paperless systems, saying they are vulnerable to software and hardware glitches or manipulation by ...

Obama's New Spin Doc Is Gen McPeak ~ Butcher Of 1991 Iraq War Post Date: 2008-03-23 09:22:24 by angle

At today's Obama rave in Oregon, the Manchurian candidate was loudly defended by retired US Air Force General Merrill McPeak, one of Obama's high-profile handlers. McPeak accused Bill Clinton of McCarthyite tactics (or was it lèse majesté?) for remarks in which Obama's holy name was not even mentioned. Who then is Obama's new defender? McPeak is a Republican Bush family appointee who was named as Air Force Chief of Staff by President George H.W. Bush in October of 1990. McPeak took over during the time of Operation Desert Shield, and assisted in the overall target selection and strategic planning for the First Gulf War ("Operation Desert Storm") of ...
AMERICAN POLITICS: A WEEK OF WADING IN SEWAGE (Obama, McCain, Clinton: Will buyer's remorse finally set in for voters?) Post Date: 2008-03-22 15:07:47 by christine

And a Happy St. Patrick's Day to you! I don't know about anyone else, but after last week, I think we can all use a little celebration, if only for one day.
The sludge and smut which has dominated our political scene for so long reached fever pitch last week and no doubt, so-called "news" networks like FAUX (FOX) will continue flogging Eliot Spitzer's downfall. I think most people sorry for his wife (who should get an AIDS test) and three teen age daughters.
Spitzer's apparent long term use of whores (prostitutes are whores who get paid for their services) came back to bite him. This plain Jane hooker with no photogenic qualities whatsoever is now laughing all the way to the bank. ...

There is a far-reaching scandal brewing for presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, thanks to a radio talk show host based in Oregon. Syndicated talk show host Laurie Roth's revelations make the news story about Obama's relationship with a racist, anti-American pastor look like child's play.
A top official at the Pentagon during former-President George H. W. Bush's Administration and a former CIA intelligence officer maintain that Barack Obama and former Weather Underground honcho William Ayers funneled money to Professor Rashid Khalidi, a known terrorist sympathizer.
Khalidi serves on the faculty of Columbia University in New York and is best known as the professor who invited ...

Candidate Watch Hillary's Balkan Adventures, Part II Greeting ceremony, Tuzla military airport, Bosnia, March 25, 1996. "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base." --Hillary Clinton, speech at George Washington University, March 17, 2008. Hillary Clinton has been regaling supporters on the campaign trail with hair-raising tales of a trip she made to Bosnia in March 1996. In her retelling, she was sent to places that her husband, President Clinton, could not go because they were "too dangerous." When her ...

In setback for Clinton, New Mexico governor backs Illinois senator By ADAM NAGOURNEY and JEFF ZELENY THE NEW YORK TIMES PORTLAND, Ore. "I talked to Sen. Clinton last night," Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico said Friday, describing the tense phone call in which he informed Clinton that despite two months of personal entreaties by her and her husband, he would endorse Barack Obama for president. "Let me tell you: We've had better conversations," Richardson said of the call. The decision by Richardson, who ended his own presidential campaign on Jan. 10, to support Obama was bad news for Clinton. It was a stinging rejection of her candidacy by a man who held ...

What a difference a day makes. Twenty-four hours after Barack Obama's teaching moment on race, the landscape was littered with eminent pundits, lying agog in the weeds, overcome by euphoria and flummoxed by failing eupepsia. Their squeals of praise were universally breathtaking: "It was an extraordinary moment of truth-telling." "A masterpiece!" "A profile in courage!" "Brilliant, inspiring, intellectually supple!" "Searing, nuanced, gut-wrenching and loyal." "A speech we have all been waiting for for a generation." The punditocracy, having overdosed on nuance, seared by supple and sore from all those wrenched guts, is fresh ...

Old dog John McCain is determined to out-run the Democrat pups Tom Baldwin and Richard Beeston John McCain looks older than his 71 years and every bit as tired as he should be, having just dragged his campaign from the grave to achieve an improbable victory over half a dozen younger rivals for the Republican nomination. In his London hotel room, without the thick TV make-up that often masks the cancer scars on his face, he seems pale utterly exhausted almost frail. He must now prepare for a November general election against either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, bidding to make history as a black or female president. Mr McCains own place in the record books, should ...

Posted 03/20/2008 @ 1:59pm What is the proper word for the claim by Hillary Clinton and the more factually disinclined supporters of her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination -- made in speeches, briefings and interviews (including one by this reporter with the candidate) -- that she has always been a critic of the North American Free Trade Agreement? Now that we know from the 11,000 pages of Clinton White House documents released this week that former First Lady was an ardent advocate for NAFTA; now that we know she held at least five meetings to strategize about how to win congressional approval of the deal; now that we know she was in the thick of the manuevering to block ...
Bob Bar To Run Third Party? Post Date: 2008-03-21 16:53:26 by Old Friend

There is talk on the TV today about Bob Bar possibly running for President. A lot of people have been bummed out since Ron Paul isn't going to win the Republican nomination. This is good news. We should take that energy that was involved in the Ron Paul Revolution and turn it towards Bob Bar. Since Ron Paul has insisted that he isn't going to run third party it would be a worthy place to place our energy. Bob Bar even gave Ron Paul a heroes introduction at this years CPAC meeting. So how about it all you Ron Paul supporters can we get behind a Bob Bar candidacy? Maybe Bob Bar could even pick Ron Paul for his vice president.

Butler County in southwest Ohio is the most Republican county of all Ohio's 88 counties. 26 county offices and none of them are held by Democrats. Yet, the strangest thing happened on Tuesday... the Butler County Democratic Party increased in registered members by over 200% and now has more registered members than the Republican Party. Hillary Clinton won this county in the Democratic Primary by 10%. Barack Obama won only 5 out of 88 counties in Ohio and those counties were the ones where Democrats are abundant. Yet Hillary Clinton won the state by only 10%. I have been told directly by Republicans here in Ohio that they voted for Hillary for the express purpose to either cause a split ...

Obama's war position could be his weakness Politicus Byline: John Vinocur The New York Times Media Group Edition: 2 Section: NEWS When John McCain says he could lose the presidential election because of his position on Iraq, people nod. But Barack Obama? Put it this way: Obama doesn't acknowledge that his call for a complete withdrawal of American troops by a specific date has become a risk to his candidacy. But the evidence suggests it is no longer the golden path to victory in November, or even to the Democratic nomination, that many of his backers once seemed to think. On Friday, an NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll reported that about 35 percent of Americans believed that it ...

Veteran journalist Chris Wallace admonished Fox & Friends over their characterization of a comment in which Obama referred to his grandmother as a "typical white person." "I love you guys, but I want to take you to task if I may respectfully for a moment," Wallace began. "I have been watching the show..., and it seems to me that two hours of Obama-bashing on this 'typical white person' remark is somewhat excessive, and frankly, I think you're somewhat distorting what Obama had to say." As the F&F hosts began grinning and shifting around in their seats, Wallace continued, "What he said was, 'The point I was making was not that my ...

Three New Obama Ads in Pennsylvania By Katharine Q. Seelye Senator Barack Obama has three new ads up in Pennsylvania, his first on television, following two radio spots earlier this week. Senator Hillary Clinton, who leads in polls in the state, has not run any ads in the state so far. Mr. Obamas first spot, which runs 60 seconds, is called Opportunity. Made specifically for Pennsylvania, this spot is biographical and underscores the Obama campaigns sense that he still needs to introduce himself to the states voters. The second, running 30 seconds, is called Toughest and describes him as having passed the toughest ethics law yet ...
