Blowback from the GOP's holy war Post Date: 2008-02-02 08:33:23 by Ada

The 2008 Republican race has left a bitter legacy of sloganeering against Muslims. It may well haunt the party this November. Feb. 1, 2008 | For much of January, one might have thought that the Republican candidates for president were already competing against a single opponent. Not one called Hillary or Barack, but with a moniker even more chilling in the eyes of hard-line Republicans: Islamic fascism. The American public, worried about mortgages, recession and a seemingly interminable war in Iraq, was unimpressed -- those who fear-mongered the most about Muslim terrorists have faltered at the polls. Even the remaining front-runners, John McCain and Mitt Romney, have said bigoted things ...
The Madness of John McCain Post Date: 2008-02-02 06:30:10 by Ada

A militarist suffering from acute narcissism and armed with the Bush Doctrine is not fit to be commander in chief. John McCains reputation as a maverick is no recent contrivance. The senator first captured the media spotlight in September 1983, not long after hed been elected to his first term in the House, when he voted against President Reagans decision to put American troops in Lebanon as part of a multinational peacekeeping force. One of 27 Republicans to break with the White House, the freshman McCain made a floor speech that reads as if it might have been written yesterdayby Ron Paul: The fundamental question is: What is the United States ...

01/02/08 "ICH" -- -- It looks as if the 2008 Presidential campaign may be over at my house. I am considering what other things I can find to do in order to be busy on election day. The choices have been winnowed down until I can find no reason for hope with any of the remaining candidates. I realize that there is much fodder for the talking heads on television as the pseudo rivalry continues but I have now lost interest. So Rudy bowed out in favor of John McCain. Big deal. Rudy wasn't going anyplace anyway and he would have been a disaster in the White House. The great loss was John Edwards. With the withdrawal of Dennis Kucinich, he was the last best hope for any chance for ...
New law cuts off 14 citizen initiatives Post Date: 2008-02-01 17:33:00 by Ferret Mike

Election '08 - Bill Sizemore denounces the law and state officials and says his work is the target The sponsors of 14 citizen initiatives have been ordered to stop gathering signatures to qualify for the November ballot until they comply with a new state record-keeping law. Five of the 14 initiatives are sponsored by veteran conservative activist Bill Sizemore. He has until Feb. 11 to submit records on a sixth initiative or stop gathering signatures for it, too. Sizemore said he will file a lawsuit early next week challenging the constitutionality of the new law, which was enacted by the Legislature last year and went into effect July 31. Sizemore lashed out at Secretary of State ...
MoveOn and SEIU Endorse Obama Post Date: 2008-02-01 15:20:20 by Ferret Mike

MoveOn may clog up your email box with their latest online pitch, but they dropped a whopper Friday that demands your attention: The 3.2 million-member organization is endorsing Barack Obama for president . This is the first time that MoveOn has endorsed a candidate in a primary. Their endorsement process is more democratic than most: They poll their membership and promised them they wouldn't back anybody until one candidate had a 2/3 majority. A few weeks ago, they were split. But earlier this week, they surveyed over 200,000 MoveOn members to see if they should endorse, and a big majority agreed. Their vote Friday delivered an ass-kicking for Obama: 70 percent of MoveOners preferred ...

Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Super Tuesday, when about half the Democratic and Republican delegates are at stake in the U.S., is billed as a national presidential primary. When it comes to economic issues, it's an amalgam of very different contests. Falling home values and the collapse of the subprime- mortgage market are the major worries in several states, including the biggest prize on Feb. 5, California. A slowing automotive industry and manufacturing-job losses dominate Midwestern states like Illinois and Missouri, and parts of the South. Financial industry losses are a burden in the Northeast. ``Conditions vary widely across the country, from a deep recession in the Central Valley ...
Obama, Clinton hold key debate as Schwarzenegger backs McCain Post Date: 2008-02-01 10:24:45 by robin

HOLLYWOOD (AFP) Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama struck a rare note of civility in their White House battle, uniting to observe that history was in the air as the Democrats vie to seize back the presidency. A star-studded audience at the Kodak Theatre -- home of the Oscars -- was on hand late Thursday for their first one-on-one debate, but the drama and backbiting seen in previous encounters was replaced by a polite exchange of policy priorities. Elsewhere, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed Arizona Senator John McCain, giving the Republican front-runner another key boost before the upcoming "Super Tuesday" battles in 22 states. Clinton said that while ...
Iraq war returns as prime debate issue Post Date: 2008-02-01 08:10:02 by angle

LOS ANGELES - Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton last night defended her 2002 vote to authorize force in Iraq as a "reasoned" decision at the time, while her primary opponent, Senator Barack Obama, said Clinton's vote raised questions about whether she has the judgment to lead the country. In the last debate before Super Tuesday and the first two-person face-off since the campaign began more than a year ago, Iraq - long dormant as an issue in the Democratic race - returned to the forefront last night. Obama said his consistent antiwar stance would make him a stronger candidate against Senator John McCain of Arizona, the GOP front-runner. Clinton, meanwhile, portrayed herself ...

This is the transcript of the GOP debate at the Reagan Library Wednesday January 30, Ron Paul ONLY. (CNN) -- ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: The first question is actually a question that will go to all of you, but I'll start with Governor Romney. During a 1980 debate, he suggested Americans determine who to vote for by asking themselves, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" So tonight, in terms of the economy, are Americans better off than they were eight years ago? COOPER: Congressman Paul, 61 percent of Americans think there is a recession already -- 61 percent of Americans say there's already a recession. Are we better off than we were eight years ago? ...

You probably haven't heard of the Dallas-based Trinity Foundation, but might be familiar with some of their work. The Daily Show's classic "God Stuff" segment with Joe Bob Briggs (a.k.a., John Bloom) was their brainchild. They also publish the Wittenburg Door: "pretty much the world's only religious satire magazine." They live in a kibbutz in one of the roughest neighborhoods in East Dallas, routinely taking in the homeless. But what they are most famous for is their (often sub rosa) exposes of televangelists like Benny Hinn, Paul Crouch, and the ubiquitous Kenneth Copeland. Most of the hypocrisy they uncover is just plain funny, like the report in the Los ...

Tuesday, 23 January, 2007 There was that tongue again. When the President lies hes got this weird nervous tick: He sticks the tip of his tongue out between his lips. Like a little boy who knows hes fibbing. Like a snake licking a rat. In his State of the Union tonight the President did his tongue thing 124 times my kids kept count. But it wasnt all rat-licking lies. Most pundits concentrated on Iraq and wacky health insurance stuff. But thats just bubbles and blather. The real agenda is in the small stuff. The little razors in the policy apple, the nasty little pieces of policy shrapnel that whiz by between the appearances of the Presidential tongue. ...

WASHINGTON (CNN) Ralph Nader, the longtime consumer advocate who was blamed by many Democrats for Al Gores loss in the 2000 presidential election, launched an exploratory committee Wednesday for another White House bid, and told CNN he is likely to get in the race if he can put the resources in place. "John Edwards, the banner of Democratic Party populism, is dropping out, and Dennis Kucinich dropped out earlier, so in terms of voters who are at least interested in having major areas of injustice, deprivations, and solutions discussed in a presidential campaign, they might be interested in my exploratory effort," Nader said. Nader has launched an official ...

30/01/08 "Commondreams" -- -- For Bill and Hillary Clinton, the ultimate American dream is eight more years. Yet how do you think they would react to having dozens of partisans at their rallies sporting large signs calling for EIGHT MORE YEARS, EIGHT MORE YEARS? Dont you have the feeling that they would cringe at such public displays of their fervent ambition which the New York Times described as a truly two-for-the-price-of-one presidential race? It might remind voters to remember or examine the real Clinton record in that peaceful decade of missed opportunities and not be swayed by the sugarcoating version that the glib former president emits at many campaign ...

Wed Jan 30, 8:21 AM ET Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Rudy Giuliani's plunge from front- runner to also-ran was fueled by a combination of strategic, ideological and personal troubles. The former New York mayor ignored or played down the first half-dozen Republican contests to concentrate on Florida, where he came in a distant third last night ...
