Elect me and oil prices instantly drop, says Hillary Clinton in Iowa Post Date: 2007-12-24 01:06:39 by Horse

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Hillary Clinton predicted Saturday that just electing her President will cut the price of oil. When the world hears her commitment at her inauguration about ending American dependence on foreign fuel, Clinton says, oil-pumping countries will lower prices to stifle America's incentive to develop alternative energy. "I predict to you, the oil-producing countries will drop the price of oil," Clinton said, speaking at the Manchester YWCA. "They will once again assume, once the cost pressure is off, Americans and our political process will recede." Clinton argued that former President Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s actually started moving in the ...

Giuliani Snuck 2,000 Boxes of Records Out of New York's City Hall By Pam Spaulding, Pam's House BlendPosted on December 21, 2007, Printed on December 23, 2007 http://www.alternet.org/bloggers/http://www.pamshouseblend.com//71355/ Let's see how his campaign responds to this. The AP reports that, while NY government only allows a former mayor to keep a few token gifts when they clean out their desks, Rudy Giuliani would have needed several U-Hauls to remove all the paperwork he whisked out of City Hall, Gracie Mansion and other offices. That doesn't square with his claim that he believes in "open government." Or maybe it depends on the meaning of the word ...

The conventional wisdom de jour in Washington, DC, can be summed up in a catchphrase popularized by Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign: "It's the economy, stupid!" The former Arkansas governor was challenging then-President George H.W. Bush, who had led the United States into a military victory against Saddam Hussein during the first Gulf War, criticizing Bush Senior for focusing too much attention on foreign policy as opposed to dealing with the economic recession of the early 1990s. Clinton and his aides were suggesting that American voters were sick and tired of Iraq, the Middle East, and other global policy issues and wanted the election campaign to concentrate ...
Presidential campaign refocuses on Iraq Post Date: 2007-12-22 10:53:40 by richard9151

Sat Dec 22, 3:17 AM ET JOHNSTON, Iowa (Reuters) - The Iraq war dominated the presidential campaign on Friday, with Hillary Clinton facing charges she flip-flopped on withdrawing forces and the White House rebuffing Mike Huckabee's criticism of its foreign policy. As the violence in Iraq has fallen in recent months in response to the deployment of additional U.S. troops, the war has become less of a daily issue among candidates for the November 2008 election. But less than two weeks before Iowa kicks off the state-by-state party nomination contests, Democrats seized on the former first lady's suggestion on Wednesday that U.S. troops could come home within a year. Previously she ...
Repukes REALLY hate Huckabee Post Date: 2007-12-22 02:47:41 by Mekons4

Mike Huckabee's insurrectionist presidential campaign is defying the determination of the Republican establishment to restrict the selection of the party's nominee to pre-approved candidates. At the same time that the ordained Baptist minister has surged to the forefront of the field not only in Iowa but in South Carolina and Florida, powerful conservative players -- from Bob Novak to the National Review to the Wall Street Journal -- are voicing outrage. "A comprehensive apostasy against core Republican beliefs," fumed George Will, so infuriated that on December 20 the normally impeccable stylist used the same phrase twice in one paragraph: "Huckabee's radical ...

The death spiral for the 131 year-old company, once respectfully known as Diebold, continues, as its stock price falls to a 5-year low today, near year's end (currently $29.23/share and still sinking, from a 52-week high of $54.50/share), along with the additional news that the U.S. Department of Justice has now joined the SEC in an investigation concerning the company's "Enron-like" ...
Timeline: Romney's MLK Confusion Post Date: 2007-12-21 21:12:26 by Brian S

It's becoming increasingly hard to follow the various explanations and accounts of Mitt Romney's father, George, "marching" (so it is claimed) alongside Martin Luther King Jr. At first the former Massachusetts governor said that he saw the two walk together through the streets of Michigan. Now? Well, it depends what your definition of "saw" is. Here is a timeline of this confusing political saga. June 23, 1963 - Then Michigan Gov. George Romney issues a proclamation in support of Martin Luther King Jr.'s march in Detroit but declines to attend, according to Susan Englander, assistant editor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University. ...

12/21/07 "ICH" -- -- Every four years the country is swept up in the pomp and pageantry of presidential elections. And every four years loyal Americans flock to the voting booths to select the candidate of their choice. Elections--we are told---are supposed to be the true expression of democratic government. But they aren't. They're a sham and most people know it. The balloting creates the illusion of choice where there is none. It's become a meaningless ritual that has nothing to do with representative government. The 2008 elections have already been marred by a number of controversies, the worst of which is the report that was published last Friday by Ohios ...

Possible DeListing? 12.20.07 -- 5:42PMBy Josh Marshall Earlier this afternoon, I pointed out the beginning of the run on the Rudy contract at the key political betting/prediction sites. That was a bit after noon. He's fallen like another five points since that post. Current price is 27.3. To give a little perspective, at the Intrade site, Rudy's seldom traded under 35 since June. He's almost never gone below 40 since September. And he peaked at around 49 on the last day before the Shag Fund story broke. And then in the last three weeks or so his contract has lost almost half its value. And in just the last day his contract has lost almost ten points.

Say Anything, Starring Multiple Choice Mitt By: John Cole December 21, 2007 at 1:05 pm I really can not believe this is the guy the establishment is pinning their hopes on: Mitt Romney has been forced to get into some serious verbal gymnastics over his previous declaration about seeing his father, the late Michigan Gov. George Romney, marching with Martin Luther King. A close examination of the historical records shows that the elder Romney, while he was a strong support of civil rights, never actually appeared with King. Ive tried to be as accurate as I can be, Romney told reporters. If you look at the literature or look at the dictionary, the term ...

Not since 1952 has the nation entered a presidential year with greater seeming uncertainty as to who will face off in November. Early that year, Tennessee Sen. Ernest Kefauver upset Harry Truman in New Hampshire, relieving the nation by dashing Harry's hopes for another four years. The Republican race would be a titanic struggle between the Eastern Establishment's Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and "Mr. Republican," Ohio Sen. Robert Taft, the conservative paragon. Splitting the primaries between them, Ike and Taft fought all the way to the convention, where Ike's Texas delegates were seated and Bob Taft's booted. How important was that race? Ike would win and serve two ...

He was nowhere to be found on stage, but Rudy Giuliani's campaign shrewdly rushed to declare victory after Tuesday night's Democratic debate in Philadelphia chiefly because the former New York mayor emerged as the preferred whipping boy among the seven Democratic rivals. Giuliani's name came up a few times, most notably when Sen. Joseph Biden called Giuliani the "most under-qualified man since George Bush to seek the presidency... I mean, think about it. Rudy Giuliani. There's... there's only three things he mentions in a sentence: a noun, a verb and 9/11." Those lines played to laughs, and a member of Giuliani's team fired back quickly Tuesday ...

Thu Dec 20, 11:50 AM ET Campaign restarts are popular items this season, and last Saturday, in case you missed it, Rudy Giuliani tried to restart his unconventional presidential campaign with an inspirational speech in Florida about overcoming adversity. "I've met adversity before," Giuliani said. "I've led in situations that seemed hopeless and dire, in need of a miracle. I don't just hope for miracles. I expect miracles." Giuliani doesn't need a miracle just yet, but a little good news might be nice. Yesterday in Missouri, mechanical problems left Giuliani without an airplane, forcing him to cancel a rally and embark instead on a seven-hour drive ...

BOSTON Making a rare foray into primary politics, Henry Kissinger, 84, who served as secretary of state under Presidents Ford and Nixon, is saying Senator McCain is the best person to serve as president at a dangerous time for America and the world. Mr. McCain stood with Mr. Kissinger and R. James Woolsey, who was the director of central intelligence during the first two years of the Clinton administration, in the historic hall of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. Flags, sabers, and portraits commemorating the Revolutionary and Civil wars adorned the location in the fourth floor of Boston's Faneuil Hall. (The venue also just happens to lie less than ...

Bloomberg And Hagel Holding Regular Calls December 20, 2007 04:07 PM New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel have been conducting regular, private phone conversations over the past few months in an effort to "feel each other out" for a possible presidential run, sources have told the Huffington Post. It has been widely speculated that the two men could mount a third-party White House ticket. And while the maverick Republican and the independent mayor have met in the past, the private phone calls provide the clearest indication yet that they are considering such a move. Sources with knowledge of the conversations say they usually occur every few ...
Authoritarian Temptation: Can we trust the the presidency to a mayor like Giuliani? (GLENN GREENWALD) Post Date: 2007-12-20 17:10:03 by aristeides

Authoritarian Temptation Can we trust the the presidency to a mayor like Giuliani? By Glenn Greenwald One of the most under-discussed aspects of Rudy Giulianis quest for the presidency is how politically shrewd he is. Giuliani was elected mayor of one of the great bastions of American liberalism despite being a former Reagan DOJ official and Republican prosecutor renowned for his merciless, at times humiliating, treatment of criminal defendants. And after four years of living under his rule, New Yorkers re-elected Giuliani in a landslide victory against an icon of traditional Big Apple liberalism, Manhattan borough president Ruth Messinger. Giuliani never disguised himself. While ...

Amid a report that he plans to drop out of the presidential race, Republican Tom Tancredo said he'll make a "major announcement" Thursday about his long-shot campaign. Although Tancredo did not shed any light on what that announcement may be, NBC News reported Wednesday that he intends to drop out of the race. Tancredo, a Colorado congressman, has scheduled a Thursday news conference in Des Moines, Iowa. He has consistently polled at the back of the seven-person GOP field. Tancredo has based his campaign on opposition to illegal immigration, running television ads that link lax border security to terrorist attacks, rape and other crimes. Tancredo announced in October he ...

18 minutes ago DAVENPORT, Iowa - Republican Mitt Romney aligned himself squarely with President Bush and his national security policies Wednesday, reaching out to GOP loyalists who hold the president in high regard, back the Iraq war and could sway the high-stakes nomination race. "I support our troops, and I support what our troops are doing. I also support our president. I believe that the president has acted in good faith and out of a desire to protect this country to do everything in his power to keep America safe," the Republican presidential candidate said. He spoke after touring the Army's Rock Island Arsenal near this eastern Iowa river city. Romney staunchly ...

Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo plans to drop out of the race during an announcement Thursday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa, GOP sources close to the campaign have told FOX News. Tancredo, who has aggressively pushed his anti-illegal immigration message throughout the GOP primary race, has not been able to break through in the polls against his better known competitors. He and California Rep. Duncan Hunter typically poll in the single digits behind Texas Rep. Ron Paul in national surveys. Tancredo would not personally confirm whether he will pull out of the race. I will neither confirm nor deny that report, Tancredo told FOX News. The five-term Colorado ...
