Buchanan: Obama's Got A Point Post Date: 2007-07-27 11:20:33 by Brian S

When, in the South Carolina debate, Barack Obama said he would meet with the leaders of Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, Iran and North Korea in his first year as president, he stepped into a cow pie. Hillary pounced, declaring that in a Clinton White House, there would be no promised first-year meetings with any dictator or enemy of the United States. The morning headline in Miami roared that Obama was open to meeting Fidel. In the Jewish community, word was surely being moved that Obama had opened the door to a face-to-face meeting with Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a Holocaust skeptic who has predicted the Israeli state is not long for the Middle East and should be transplanted to ...
McCain: Media Team Resigns Post Date: 2007-07-27 11:13:23 by Calamity

WASHINGTON -- Sen. John McCain's media team has resigned, an indication that a campaign shake-up two weeks ago is continuing to backfire and further imperil the Arizona Republican's presidential candidacy. Political ad-makers Russ Schriefer and Stuart Stevens, veterans of President Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaigns, on Monday emailed the new campaign manager -- lobbyist and longtime McCain adviser Rick Davis -- to say that they were quitting. The two men told friends they had considered leaving for days, as they hadn't been paid and the campaign's financial straits raised questions of when and how much they would be. Their resignations followed a story in The Wall Street ...
Hillary's Neocon: The Imperial Vision of Richard Holbrooke Post Date: 2007-07-27 10:29:59 by Eoghan

Richard Holbrooke likes Hillary Clinton. In fact he may well be asked to serve as Secretary of State if she is to win the presidential campaign next year. Holbrooke, a Democratic adaptation of Henry Kissinger, loves her approach to foreign policy. "She is probably more assertive and willing to use force than her husband," says Holbrooke, a former adviser to Bill Clinton. "Hillary Clinton is a classic national-security Democrat. She is better at framing national-security issues for the current era than her husband was at a common point in his career." Holbrooke is an example of just how scary a Clinton administration would be. In 1975, during Gerald Ford's ...

Previously undisclosed documents detail how Republican operatives, with the knowledge of several White House officials, engaged in an illegal, racially-motivated effort to suppress tens of thousands of votes during the 2004 presidential campaign in a state where George W. Bush was trailing his Democratic challenger, Senator John Kerry. The documents also contain details describing how Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign officials, and at least one individual who worked for White House political adviser Karl Rove, planned to stop minorities residing in Cuyahoga County from voting on election day. The efforts to purge voters from registration rolls was spearheaded by Tim Griffin, a former Republican ...
Picking Apart the Poll (Paul) Numbers Post Date: 2007-07-26 06:11:14 by Ada

The Ron Paul earthquake has turned into a snowball rolling downhill, gathering mass and speed daily. Press attention is up, money is flowing in and smears are missing their mark. His Republican opponents juggle miscellaneous political problems while Fred Thompson auditions for Hamlet: And thus the native hue of resolution Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought, And enterprises of great pith and moment With this regard their currents turn awry, And lose the name of action. Only one obstacle remains before Ron Paul is deemed a real contender and we can get onto the issues: the opinion polls. We are right to be skeptical of polls, particularly early polls about small turnout ...

Karl Rove, Pothead By FRED GARDNER Among the 78,000 pages of Nixon Administration documents recently released by the National Archives was a memo from young Karl Rove to Anne Armstrong, counselor to the President. Rove aspired to head the College Republicans. His memo proposes, among other things, that college Republican clubs show "nonpolitical films for fundraising (e.g. John Wayne flicks, 'Reefer Madness')..." The New York Times asked Rove for a comment and then reported: "The 56-year-old Mr. Rove pleaded forgetfulness. 'God, this is 1973,' he said. 'You work the math. I don't remember it all.'" What math? The heavy subtraction? 1973 ...
HOUSE REJECTS CAMPAIGN PAY FOR SPOUSES Post Date: 2007-07-24 10:58:59 by rowdee

WASHINGTON (AP) - Spouses don't belong on campaign payrolls, the House says, voting to end a practice that has benefited some members of Congress for years. Monday's action follows controversies in which lawmakers added many thousands of dollars to their family incomes by hiring relatives for campaign tasks, even if their qualifications were not always apparent. The practice "has shown the potential to foster corruption," said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., chief sponsor of the measure that was approved by voice vote after little debate. The bill would bar a federal candidate's spouse from being paid by the candidate's campaign or leadership political action ...

Gingrich Jabs at GOP Pursuing 2008 White House Nod Monday , July 23, 2007 WASHINGTON From a safe distance on the sidelines, Newt Gingrich on Monday attacked the lot of 2008 GOP presidential candidates, comparing Republicans to "pygmies" and calling them trained seals. Speaking at a breakfast sponsored by the conservative magazine The American Spectator and reported by The Examiner, Gingrich said he could be forced into the race if Republicans don't demonstrate leadership and it then becomes "patently obvious, as the morning paper points out, that the Democrats have raised a hundred million more than the Republicans, and at some point people decide we are going ...

Stephen Herbits, secretary-general of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), has joined a group of gay and lesbian leaders who back the presidential candidacy of Hillary Clinton. Herbits, along with dozens of gay and lesbian leaders, joined the "LGBT Americans for Hillary," described as "a national steering committee of over 65 leaders in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community" by Clinton's official campaign website. Speaking to Ynetnews, Herbits denied a press report which claimed that he was heading the group. "I am not running anything, I have no responsibilities, other than the fact that I am supporting Hillary Clinton," he said. ...

Turkey's Islamic-rooted ruling party won parliamentary elections by a wide margin Sunday, and the prime minister pledged to safeguard the country's secular traditions and do whatever the government deems necessary to fight separatist Kurdish rebels. With more than 99 percent of votes counted, television news channels were projecting that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party would win 341 of the 550 seats, down from 351 in the outgoing parliament. Erdogan, a devout Muslim, told supporters in his victory speech that he would preserve pluralistic democracy and work for national unity. "We will never make concessions over the values of people, ...

One giant YouTube leap, for 2008 White House hopefuls Post Date: 2007-07-22 21:39:15 by robin

Is it a new dawn in US politics, or just another gimmick in an endless and overcrowded 2008 White House race? Senator Hillary Clinton and Democratic presidential rivals clamber on stage Monday in South Carolina to face questions not from some highly paid, starched television news star, but supposedly ordinary voters airing unfiltered demands for answers in YouTube videos. The first CNN/YouTube debate is billed as a bid to ditch stale, staged showdowns for an edgy and risky leap into cyberspace. Fuelled by short, grainy, jerky and often quirky videos uploaded to the YouTube site, many filmed in bedrooms and living rooms, the event is already being hailed as a political milestone. ...

Rudy Reveals Secret War! In a stunning rocket, Rudy Jew-liani basically admitted that he doesnt know anything at all about foreign policy or maybe that he knows too much. In an interview with the Jew York Times, Rudy inavertendly revealed that the US has been fighting an entire extra war these last few years that only he knows about. Neither one of these two wars - the one in Afghanstan/Pakistan or the one in Iraq - was nearly at the level of the planning we had done for the two wars we would have to fight at once, he said. Both of them would be considered small wars in comparison to that. So it would seem to me that we should have organized ourselves ...

The Rudy Giuliani Presidential Committee announced today that actress Bo Derek is endorsing Rudy Giuliani for President. Derek, a native of California, will aid the campaigns efforts in the state. Rudy Giuliani is a problem solver with common sense leadership who made a tremendous and positive difference as Mayor of New York, impacting peoples lives for the better, said Derek. Like many Americans, I was impressed with Rudys strong leadership and calm resolve in the wake of the September 11 attacks. I truly believe that Rudy is the only Republican candidate that can win this election because he has the experience this country needs in these difficult ...

July 21, 2007 The Republican War by Charley Reese It is now clear that the proper name for the war going on in Mesopotamia is the "Republican War." Never before has a political party so decisively asserted ownership of a foreign war. The Republicans refuse to share it with the Democrats, who, despite their many resolutions, have yet to call for a complete withdrawal of American forces. Democrats have not come close to proposing to cut off the war funding, which is the only way the war can be ended. Yet Republicans act like jealous suitors and seem to want to keep the war as their very own. They have killed every single proposal to alter the strategy or the tactics. They even ...

In 2004, YouTube didn't exist. Three years later, politicians have learned to fear and revere the video-sharing Web site that has become a vital part of the campaign for the 2008 U.S. presidential election. From rapid dissemination of political blunders, often with funny tunes, to a new wave of music videos featuring scantily clad women singing the praises of their presidential favorites, http://YouTube.com has sparked a new interest in politics. More than 2.5 million people have viewed "I've Got a Crush...On Obama" about Democratic Sen. Barack Obama since it was posted last month. A rebuttal video of women fighting over Obama and leading Republican contender Rudy ...
Question: What are the requirements to recall a Congressman? Post Date: 2007-07-20 12:04:36 by Horse

Does anyone know the requirements to recall a Congressman? I know they tried to recall Joe McCarthy from the Senate and failed. I would like to know how many signatures we would need and as many of the details as possible. I need help as I have never done legal research online. I am ambitious and would like to recall about 400 of the congress critters but for now I would just like to know what it would take to get rid of just one of them. Thanks in advance.

SENATE '08 UPDATE Will Dems hold on to the slimmest of margins? Isaac Wood and Larry J. Sabato U.Va. Center for Politics As of yesterday, there were exactly 475 days left until Election Day 2008. Since the Crystal Ball's last Senate update, filed exactly 600 days before the election, there have been a number of interesting developments that merit mention. To begin with, there will now be a total of 34 seats on the ballot, instead of the 33 originally planned. This, of course, is a result of Wyoming Senator Craig Thomas's passing. Per the Seventeenth Amendment and Wyoming state election law, newly appointed Senator John Barrasso will face a special election on the same day as ...
The YouTube-ification of politics: Candidates losing control Post Date: 2007-07-18 16:18:43 by Eoghan

It was one of the most talked about moments in the 2006 campaign: "Lets give a welcome to Macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." That was then-Virginia Republican Sen. George Allen's controversial remark to a young campaign aide working for Allen's opponent, Democrat Jim Webb. The comment was caught on camera by the Webb aide, and was put on YouTube. It became a smash hit. Allen was expected to cruise to re-election, but thanks in part to the YouTube video, Allen lost his seat by just a few thousand votes to Webb. His loss, along with the razor thin defeat of Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Montana -- who had his own damaging moments on YouTube -- helped ...
