America's Genocidal Iraq War
Post Date: 2013-03-20 03:28:39 by Stephen Lendman

America's Genocidal Iraq War by Stephen Lendman March 19 marks its 10th anniversary. Permanent occupation is policy. Killing, destruction, toxic pollution, and human misery remain unabated. Pre-2003 Iraq no longer exists. America's Iraq war is one of history's greatest crimes. It followed Gulf War devastation and punishing sanctions. They caused about 1.5 million deaths. Most were young children. Up to 7,000 died monthly. Former UN humanitarian coordinator Dennis Halliday resigned in protest. He refused to be part of what he called "genocide." Gideon Polya keeps count. From 1990 - 2011, he estimates 1.7 million violent deaths, 2.9 million avoidable ones (from ...

IRAQ, TEN YEARS LATER: WHAT ABOUT THE CONSTITUTION?
Post Date: 2013-03-18 06:46:41 by Ada

In a few days, we will have a new anniversary to celebrate, or to mourn. The bombing of Baghdad ten years ago this week marked the beginning of another senseless American war fought for reasons that turned out not to exist, driven by wrongheaded, cockeyed, and manipulated intelligence. We know the history. After a few weeks in which the Iraqi Army scattered without putting up much of a fight, the situation quickly got out of control. By mid- 2004, with a Presidential election under way, it was clear to many that we were deep into a guerrilla war that would turn out badly and take the lives of thousands of Americans, and many times that number of Iraqis. And yet George Bush, the man who ...

1.6 Billion Rounds Of Ammo For Homeland Security? It's Time For A National Conversation
Post Date: 2013-03-15 08:56:03 by Ada

The Denver Post, on February 15th, ran an Associated Press article entitled Homeland Security aims to buy 1.6b rounds of ammo, so far to little notice. It confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security has issued an open purchase order for 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. As reported elsewhere, some of this purchase order is for hollow-point rounds, forbidden by international law for use in war, along with a frightening amount specialized for snipers. Also reported elsewhere, at the height of the Iraq War the Army was expending less than 6 million rounds a month. Therefore 1.6 billion rounds would be enough to sustain a hot war for 20+ years. In America. Add to this perplexing ...

Euthanasia is a long, smooth-sounding word, and it conceals its danger as long, smooth words do, but the danger is there, nevertheless. ~ Pearl S. RAND PAUL’S MISPLACED CELEBRATION

With his 13-hour filibuster of President Obama’s nomination of John Brennan to be CIA director, U.S. Senator Rand Paul has drawn the nation’s attention to the issue of whether President Obama claims the authority to assassinate American citizens here at home, on American soil. The president, through Attorney General Eric Holder, initially stated that the president could use the military to kill Americans on U.S. soil but only in an “extraordinary circumstance.” Holder emphasized, however, that the president has “no intention of doing so.” Yesterday, at a daily briefing, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney read a short letter from Holder that’s states ...

The Stalinist in the White House

In the fashion of Caesar thrice refusing the crown even as he assumed dictatorial powers, tyrants will occasionally engage in self-aggrandizement disguised as self-deprecation. Barack Obama offered a moment of that kind last week when, in reply to a question about the budget sequester posed by a media sycophant, he said, "I’m not a dictator." Obama wasn’t serious, of course. He does consider himself a dictator, albeit one whose term in office is limited, at least for now. Obama might not lock the doors of the Oval Office and force Republican congressional leaders to carry out budget negotiations, but – as his Attorney General made clear in a letter to Senator ...

Three Democratic myths used to demean the Paul filibuster

The progressive 'empathy gap', a strain of liberal authoritarianism, and a distortion of Holder's letter are invoked to defend Obama This video frame grab provided by Senate Television shows Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. speaking on the floor of the Senate on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Photograph: AP Commencing immediately upon the 9/11 attack, the US government under two successive administrations has spent 12 straight years inventing and implementing new theories of government power in the name of Terrorism. Literally every year since 9/11 has ushered in increased authorities of exactly the type Americans are inculcated to believe only exist in those ...

Rand Paul’s Filibuster Divides the Left and Right

Senator Rand Paul’s thirteen-hour filibuster of Obama’s appointee for CIA chief, John Brennan, was the ninth longest filibuster in U.S. history, and unlike most such spectacles in U.S. history, it concerned fundamental, core issues of American liberty. It will go down in the history books as one of the very few great moments in the struggle of freedom vs. power manifesting itself on Capitol Hill. Brennan was a major architect of Bush’s monstrous extraordinary renditioning program, and is a poster boy for drone warfare and unlimited presidential power. His appointment served as the perfect moment for Paul to unload on the imperial presidency. Just this week, Obama’s ...

36 Hours That Changed The Republican Party — Libertarians Believe Their Moment Has Finally Arrived

APKentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul has emerged from his 13-hour filibuster as a national political leader, having unexpectedly unified divergent wings of the Republican Party on the issue of civil liberties. For libertarians, Paul's filibuster — and the groundswell of support for it across the conservative spectrum — was a crowning moment, signaling their reintegration into the mainstream Republican Party, which has largely dismissed, and even mocked, libertarian notions about civil liberties in the decade since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "This was a very big deal. In 36 hours, the Republican Party has completely changed," said Brian Doherty, a ...

John McCain and Lindsey Graham Declare War on Rand Paul

The anti-Rand Pauls, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, took to the Senate floor this morning to defend killing American citizens at presidential discretion. Graham is doing so live on C-SPAN2 right now, saying that everything you do is a danger to America no matter who or where you are, as long as the U.S. government has decided you have "joined al-Queda," whatever the hell that means. Earlier John McCain said, as Business Insider reported: "Calm down, Senator," McCain said, in an admonition to Paul. "The U.S. government cannot randomly target U.S. citizens." McCain argued that Paul's warning that the Obama could target ...

Killing Americans on U.S. Soil: Eric Holder's Evasive, Manipulative Letter

The attorney general should be brought before Congress and interrogated about his notion of what the president could do in the aftermath of an attack. On December 7, 1941, Japanese war planes bombed the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Six decades later, Al Qaeda terrorists flew hijacked airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Neither President Franklin Roosevelt nor President George W. Bush targeted and killed Americans on U.S. soil in the aftermath of those attacks. Doing so wouldn't have made any sense. How strange, then, that Attorney General Eric Holder invoked those very attacks in a letter confirming that President Obama believes there are circumstances ...

Obama's Persecution of Bradley Manning

Thanks to Bradley Manning, the world learned important information about the U.S. government's misconduct abroad. He pled guilty February 28 to leaking 700,000 documents to WikiLeaks, the international source that has exposed the malfeasance of institutions the world over. He leaked these documents to reveal the government's obsession "with killing and capturing people" and "to make the world a better place." The documents shined light on mistreated detainees at Guantánamo and such atrocities as the now notorious 2007 civilian killings in Iraq that were publicized in the "Collateral Murder" video three years ago. Some have argued that some of ...

Rand Paul filibuster against CIA nominee gains strength in Senate

Sen. Rand Paul's old-fashioned filibuster Wednesday against CIA nominee John Brennan has gained strength, with several Republicans and one Democrat joining him on the floor. Paul began the filibuster at 11:45 a.m. to prevent Senate Democrats from ending debate on Brennan and moving to a final vote. The Kentucky Republican spoke on the floor for more than three hours by himself before he was joined by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) — who, like Paul, is a favorite of the Tea Party Movement. Paul's effort is aimed at drawing attention to the administration's drone program, which Brennan played a key role in administering as White House counterterrorism chief. “I’m here ...

Why Was JFK Assassinated?

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has joined the ranks of skeptics and “conspiracy theorists” who believe that a lone gunman was not solely responsible for the assassination of his uncle, President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy said his father, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, believed the Warren Commission Report was a “shoddy piece of craftsmanship” “The evidence at this point I think is very, very convincing that it was not a lone gunman,” he said, but he did not elaborate on what he believed may have happened. John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, while riding in a motorcade through Dallas. Robert F. Kennedy, while celebrating his victory in the California ...

Walter Jones, GOP Congressman, Hits Dick Cheney Over Iraq War

Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), an outspoken critic of the war in Afghanistan, said at a conference Saturday that former Vice President Dick Cheney would probably end up in hell for the Iraq War. "Congress will not hold anyone to blame. Lyndon Johnson's probably rotting in hell right now because of the Vietnam War, and he probably needs to move over for Dick Cheney," Jones said at a Young Americans for Liberty conference in Raleigh, N.C. The group is a spinoff from former Rep. Ron Paul's (R-Texas) 2008 presidential campaign. During his keynote address to the group, he praised Paul. "I want to give credit to the man who helped me understand if you're ever going to ...

Karzai orders US special forces out of Afghan province

The Afghan president has ordered US special forces to leave Wardak province within two weeks. The decision was being taken due to allegations of disappearances and torture by Afghans considered to be part of US special forces, said a spokesman for Hamid Karzai. The strategically significant, central province of Wardak has been the recent focus of counter-insurgency operations. A US statement said it took all allegations of misconduct seriously. But the US could not comment specifically on this latest development "until we have had a chance to speak with senior government officials", the statement by a spokesman for US special forces said. "This is an important issue ...

Rand Paul’s fishin’ for $5M in waste

To cut the budget, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is looking under the sea for solutions. Paul said Thursday he would give President Barack Obama the power to cut the $5.2 million spent on what he called “goldfish studies” and other wasteful military spending as the country inches closer to March 1, when the $1.2 trillion cuts in federal spending over the next decade take effect. “In the military they have $5.2 million they spent on goldfish — studying goldfish to see how democratic they were and if we could learn about democracy from goldfish. I would give the president the authority to go ahead and cut all $5 million in goldfish studies,” Paul said on Fox News. The ...

The Drone Threat

Last week, Senators threatened to put a “hold” on the nomination of John Brennan to be CIA director over his refusal to answer questions about the use of drones to kill Americans on US soil. That the president’s nominee to head the agency that has used drones to kill perhaps thousands overseas could not deny their possible use at home should be shocking. How did we get to this point? The Obama administration has rapidly expanded the use of drones overseas, as they appear a way to expand US military action without the political risk of American boots on the ground. In fact they are one of the main reasons a recent Gallup survey of Pakistan, where most US drone strikes take ...

“Much of our foreign policy now depends on the hope of benevolent dictators and philosopher kings. The law can’t help. The law is what the kings say it is.” ~ Ta-Nehisi Coates, writing for The Atlantic “If George Bush had done this, it would have been stopped.” ~ Joe Scarborough, former Republican congressman and current MSNBC pundit When Barack Obama ascended to the presidency in 2008, there was a sense, at least among those who voted for him, that the country might change for the better. Those who watched in awe as President Bush chipped away at our civil liberties over the course of his two terms as president thought that maybe this young, charismatic ...

Obama's Secret Court for Killing

President Obama willingly admits he dispatched CIA agents to kill an American and his teenage son and the son's American friend while they were in a desert in Yemen in 2011. He says he did so because the adult had encouraged folks to wage war on the United States and the children were just "collateral damage." He says further that he'll do this again when he is convinced that killing Americans will keep America safe. He says he knows the adult encouraged evil, and his encouragement caused the deaths of innocents. The adult was never charged with a crime or indicted by a grand jury; he was just targeted for death by the president himself and executed by a CIA drone. ...

WHY DID SOME LOCAL MEDIA EDIT OUT ANTI-NRA, PRO-OBAMA PORTIONS OF ACCUSED COP-KILLER’S SUPPOSED MANIFSTO?

Former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Jordan is the target in a massive manhunt. (AP) The supposed manifesto of a fired Los Angeles police officer being sought in several slayings contained praise for President Barack Obama and gun control and disdain for the National Rifle Association in portions apparently redacted at the request of the LAPD. L.A. Fox affiliate KTTV-TV published a portion of Christopher Dorner’s writing that left out his political views. Other local news outlets including KTLA-TV and KFI AM 640 did the same. KTTV did originally publish a full version but removed it from their website after a request from police, a spokesman told BuzzFeed. Reached for ...

After stonewalling for more than a year federal judges and ordinary citizens who sought the revelation of its secret legal research justifying the presidential use of drones to kill persons overseas—even Americans—claiming the research was so sensitive and so secret that it could not be revealed without serious consequences, the government sent a summary of its legal memos to an NBC newsroom earlier this week. This revelation will come as a great surprise, and not a little annoyance, to U.S. District Court Judge Colleen McMahon, who heard many hours of oral argument during which the government predicted gloom and doom if its legal research were subjected to public scrutiny. She ...

Original Source of full 22-page Christopher Dorner Manifeso revealed (LewRockwell Columnist)

The Christopher Dorner case has garnered a great deal of attention, particularly because of the Manifesto he allegedly posted on facebook. There are apparently two versions of the manifesto, one being an 11-page version reported on mainstream news sites such as KTLA5 Los Angeles but another which is 22-pages and presents Dormer as an Obama-loving left-wing gun control advocate. Since the Dorner story is multi-faceted and rapidly developing, not to mention involving rampant police corruption, LibertyFight.com sought to verify the exact origins of this alleged additional manifesto content. Alternative websites reported the left-wing version of the manifesto in a frenzy, but did not seem to ...
