Mitt Romney warns NRA against an 'unrestrained' second-term Obama Post Date: 2012-04-14 09:14:00 by Ada

Mitt Romney drew a warm reception from the National Rifle Assn. on Friday as he attacked President Obama for employing every imaginable ruse and ploy to restrict gun rights, which Romney pledged not to do if elected in November. Although gun control groups have complained that Obama has done little to support their cause, Romney took a page from the NRA leadership, which has been saying that the president is waiting for a second term to crack down on firearms. He warned that Obama would remake the Supreme Court in a second term, threatening constitutional freedoms. In a second term, he would be unrestrained by the demands of re-election, Romney told a ...
As weather gets biblical, insurers go missing Post Date: 2012-04-12 12:59:56 by Ada

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - As weather disasters strike with more frequency, homeowners first get hit with the destruction or total loss of property. Many are then hit with the unexpected loss of homeowners insurance policies as insurance companies re-evaluate their financial liabilities. After a tornado ripped through Springfield, Massachusetts, last year, R. Paula Lazzari's home was badly damaged. The retired teacher found broken windows, missing siding and a damaged roof. Her insurer offered to fund repairs for one broken window and some of the siding. It took nine months -- and mediation services from an independent adjuster and the Massachusetts Division of Insurance -- to get her ...
The Murder of Mary Pinchot Meyer Post Date: 2012-04-12 08:23:11 by Ada

In early 1976 the National Enquirer published a story that shocked the elite political class in Washington, D.C. The story disclosed that a woman named Mary Pinchot Meyer, who was a divorced spouse of a high CIA official named Cord Meyer, had been engaged in a two-year sexual affair with President John F. Kennedy. By the time the article was published, JFK had been assassinated, and Mary Pinchot Meyer herself was dead, a victim of a murder that took place in Washington on October 12, 1964. The murder of Mary Pinchot Meyer is the subject of a fascinating and gripping new book by Peter Janney, who was childhood friends with Mary Meyers three sons and whose father himself was a high ...
The Real Reason for Ron Paul's Youth Support Post Date: 2012-04-11 12:01:54 by Prefrontal Vortex

The Real Reason for Ron Paul's Youth Support Have you noticed that the oldest candidate has the youngest following? Its no mystery why Ron Pauls message resonates with young people. Congressman Paul himself put the going explanation most succinctly, in what has to be one of the dumbest comments made all campaign season: They know what freedom means. The freedom young people know about is freedom from responsibility. Once student loan payments start coming due, jobs have to be found, and significant others start to want to get married and have families in other words, once the weight of the world starts pressing down young people begin ...
Why Many Young People Love Ron Paul And Why Many Older People Despise Him Post Date: 2012-04-11 08:51:15 by Jethro Tull

I have watched Ron Paul for a very long time and one trend I see over and over is the split that emerges between people of roughly under the age of 40 and those who are older when his name is mentioned. I have no polling data to back this up, but young people seem to like Ron Paul and older people seem not to.This is by no means uniform. I know plenty of older folks who love the good doctor and plenty of young people who do not like him, but generally the above statement holds I think. Why is this?Fundamentally I believe it comes down to faith in the markets and whether or not one is playing for the future, or if one is clinging to the past.Young people have much to lose in the economic ...

The American Spring Comes to UCLA Post Date: 2012-04-09 17:49:50 by christine

It is only the first week of April, but the American Spring is in full bloom. You could feel it in the energy of the 7000+ people who gathered at a stadium on the UCLA campus a few nights ago to see a candidate for president who offers a radical, yet timeless vision of a society based on peaceful, voluntary interaction, rather than coercion and force. At 76, Ron Paul has become a hero to a generation of college students, and at rallies like this one you can almost see his ideas rushing forward like his vast crowd of supporters pouring in through the stadium doors to a philosophical tipping point that might be closer than we realize. Not that you would know it from the ...
US to Iran: Surrender Dorothy! Post Date: 2012-04-09 08:25:44 by Ada

Negotiations preceded by ultimatum On a recent trip to Washington, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid down the law: America must threaten the Iranians with war if Tehran insists on pursuing its nuclear energy program. We are supposed to take seriously Netanyahus threats to strike Iran himself, in spite of the fact that Israel has neither the means nor the political resolve to do so. However, this is not the way Israel operates: their preferred method is to let Uncle Sam do their dirty work, as in Iraq, while they save their resources for aggression closer to home. The Israel-is-about-to-attack-Iran meme gives the Americans cover to take action in the name of ...
Local Ron Paul supporters keep the faith Post Date: 2012-04-08 19:04:36 by christine

Maybe you saw them all those people jumping around at Dallas intersections last weekend, waving their Ron Paul signs. And for what? Surely they know Mitt Romney has the GOP nomination just about sewn up. And besides, Paul is one of the few Republican candidates who never even flirted with front-runner status. Yet the hardcore, never-say-die Paul supporters go right on campaigning like its a week before Iowa. I wondered why, so I sat down with a few of the local diehards one evening last week. Sal Ayala probably hit it on the head when he said they dont think in terms of a political campaign. This is a movement, he said. Its a cause. Its ...

Dear Ron, A lot of my readers are big fans of yours: on those rare but pungent occasions when I have criticized you, Ive gotten lots of "blowback" in the comments section and in emails sent directly to my inbox. Whenever I praised you, Ive enjoyed a veritable avalanche of favorable feedback. I cant tell you how many conversations Ive had with non-libertarians who praise you to the skies. Many people beyond the narrow confines of the libertarian movement are watching your campaign with great interest, and rooting for you especially those who are concerned about our foreign policy of perpetual war. A lot of these people are not actually registered ...
The Supreme Court and Obamacare Post Date: 2012-04-05 11:51:53 by Ada

Last week the Supreme Court heard arguments concerning the constitutionality of the Obamacare law, focusing on the mandate requiring every American to buy health insurance or pay fines enforced by the IRS. Hopefully the Court will strike down this abomination, but we must recognize that the federal judiciary has an abysmal record when it comes to protecting liberty. Its doubtful the entire law will be struck down. Regardless, the political left will continue its drive toward a single-payer, government run health care system. The insurance mandate clearly exceeds the federal governments powers under the interstate commerce clause found in Article I, Section 8 of the ...

Review of Jim DeMint, Now or Never: Saving America from Economic Collapse (Center Street, 2012), xxix + 271 pgs., hardcover, $24.99. Drug warrior, warmonger, and police statist Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) recently did an interview about his new book Now or Never in which he said: "A lot of the libertarian ideas that Ron Paul is talking about
should not be alien to any Republican." Okay, Jim, so why are they alien to you? They are obviously so alien to DeMint that he couldnt endorse Ron Paul in the South Carolina Republican presidential primary. He didnt endorse Ron Paul in 2008 either he endorsed Mitt Romney. Although DeMints newest book (he has ...
Gene Healy: Do blood and guts make for good presidencies? Post Date: 2012-04-04 06:30:20 by Ada

Popularity hounds that they are, American presidents pay close attention to two sets of polls. The first is the presidential approval rating taken regularly in polls of ordinary Americans. The second is the perennial presidential ranking survey, where historians and political scientists are asked to judge presidential "greatness." "Legacy"-minded presidents might learn some strange lessons from these scholarly surveys. For instance, Harry Truman, who launched our first major undeclared war, routinely beats his successor Dwight Eisenhower, who kept the peace during hair-trigger tensions with the Soviets. Similarly, the odious Woodrow Wilson, who brought the United ...
Poll: Majority in GOP want Gingrich, Paul to drop out Post Date: 2012-04-02 17:09:58 by christine

As the GOP presidential race continues, a new poll finds that six in 10 Republicans would like Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul to abandon their White House bids. The CNN/ORC International poll finds Mitt Romney leading Rick Santorum, 36% to 26%. That's a change from mid-February, when Romney and Santorum were essentially tied after the former Pennsylvania senator swept the Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado contests. Gingrich and Paul are both more than 10 points behind Santorum in the new poll. Both candidates say they are staying in the race, despite calls by top Republicans such as Jeb Bush to unite behind Romney, the GOP front-runner. Asked whether candidates should stay or go, 60% of ...
Enemies, Bedfellows Post Date: 2012-04-02 12:10:39 by Eric Stratton

Enemies, Bedfellows The Ron Paul 2012 campaigns caucus-state delegate strategy, discussed here before, aims to work around the candidates biggest hurdle: Republican voters. Though Ron Paul has a strong appeal to the young and to independents constituencies needed to win against a sitting president older, mainstream Republicans voters arent especially responsive to the mavericks charms. Concentrating on selecting actual delegates at the caucuses, rather than the media-hyped (and electorally meaningless) straw polls, is a clever strategy. But whats good for the goose is great for the gander. A video from Washington State shows a self-proclaimed ...

It seems that Ron Paul and his staff have reached a milestone before any of the other candidates. As Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were not on the ballot in Virginia one may believe they will never reach this milestone. I was sent the following email on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 7:35 pm: LAKE JACKSON, Texas 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul is the first candidate among those vying for the GOP nomination to appear on the ballot in all 50 states, and the only candidate aside from moderate-establishment Mitt Romney to have any prospects for 50-state ballot access. The 12-term Congressman from Texas filed to appear on the ballot in New Jersey today Tuesday, ...
Panetta Dismisses Polls, Insists Afghan War Strategy Won’t Change Post Date: 2012-03-28 07:48:18 by Ada

Canadian DM: Polls Are for Dogs Speaking today following a meeting with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta dismissed the recent polls showing a supermajority of Americans opposed to continuing the occupation of Afghanistan, saying that the US already has the best strategy for the war and will continue on with it despite what the polls say. I think the American people understand why were engaged in Afghanistan. 9/11 represented an attack on our country, Panetta said. The poll actually touched on this, with a majority of respondents saying that since the death of Osama bin Laden they arent really clear what the ...

Sen. Rand Paul blocks Iran sanctions bill Post Date: 2012-03-27 20:51:30 by Ada

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Tuesday blocked legislation that would impose a new sanctions on Iran. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) had hoped to quickly pass the bill by unanimous consent. But Paul objected and introduced an amendment stating that any use of military force against Iran must be authorized by Congress. Our Founding Fathers were quite concerned about giving the power declare war to the Executive, Paul said on the Senate floor. They were quite concerned that the Executive could become like a king. Before sending our young men and women into combat, we should have a mature and thoughtful debate over the ramifications of and over the ...
Ron Paul Upsets Santorum in Missouri Caucuses Buoyed By Huge Youth Turnout Post Date: 2012-03-27 09:06:37 by Ada

The final outcome of Missouris lengthy caucus process may not be known for months. Early results, however, indicate that Ron Paul may well walk away from the state with the most delegates. Yesterday, his supporters overwhelmed the largest pooled caucus Jackson county, responsible for sending 179 delegates to the state and congressional district conventions winning over two-thirds of the available delegate slots. Mr. Paul also swept St. Louis, winning all of the citys 36 delegates. Missouris second and third largest caucuses, which convened last Saturday, reported similar results. In Greene county (111 delegates), Paul backers won nearly 60% of the delegate ...
