Title: Turtle's Pug Tries to Eat a Bird

I was taking my pug for a walk this morning when he stuck his nose in a bush and started wagging his tail. When he backed out he had a live, injured bird in his mouth. He was trying to crunch it and eat it. Thinking it might be diseased, I made him let out of it and pushed it back into the bushes with my foot. Later that afternoon I took him for another walk and saw the same bird, awake this time, but hopping around apparently with an injured wing. Since it was hiding in the bushes I didn't bother it, but Mickey the pug was straining at his leash trying to get it again. When I looked on Google, many people were posting, "My dog ate a bird!" Apparently it's normal behavior for dogs to eat injured and dead birds. He didn't even try to share it with me, the ingrate.

My oldest son had a dog he hid in his fraternity for three years, it was their mascot. It is the only dog I ever saw who could jump from a dead still stand and grab a bird in mid air. (We live exciting lives.)
I keep forgetting that dogs, even ones has harmless as pugs, are predators. He was just as happy as could be that he had that bird in his mouth. He tried to run away to eat it, but of course he never realizes I've got a harness on him.
“Peppy!” I am shouting at my little dog, but pull myself up short as I see that he has found his prey in the monkey grass and that once again, his prey is a venomous reptile. I also observe that this copperhead and my Jack Russell have each other in their sights. It’s too late to do anything about it now. The reptile brain and the mammalian brain are locked in combat. Now there’s an ancient enmity. It's a sunny Saturday morning, and I ’m bent over some roses in my yard hosing water into the mulch while my dog is sniffing in the greenery looking for a snack. When I hear the sniffing come to a halt, I know that something is amiss, and I Iook up to see Peppy in freeze- frame, face to face with this coppery serpent, it’s head cocked and lips parted for the blow. My dog has room to maneuver. In fact, he has the space yet to retreat, but he’s in this pissing contest now for the end game and he’s not going to given an inch. What happens next is over before I can blink an eye. There’s a scuffle in the grass and Pep jumps back a foot and a half. Then he comes limping over to me on three feet holding his right paw in the air. “Dad, he bit me on the foot!” he says with his eyes. I can see a dot of blood swelling on his paw. I take him inside to sleep off the injury, and as I do, I can see that his ankle is already beginning to swell up. It used to be on his nose or his snout, and he’d come in with his face comically swollen. He’d look for his bed after these snake fights and take a long nap. The first time he scrapped with a copperhead, we took him to the vet. We thought he would die, but it takes more than a single snake bite to kill a Jack Russell. With experience, Peppy has changed his tactics. His objective now is to pin them down and rip their bellies open. I’ve found them on the grass that way, belly up and leaking intestines. He doesn’t feed on them much. He just likes the kill. Like a fool, I look for the snake in the monkey grass, poking around there with a pitchfork, but it has vanished. There’s something spooky about the way they disappear. I see more of them dead than alive. ‘Coons too. Pep has horrible dust ups with them in the dark, and slinks in through the doggie door covered in battle blood. My wife takes him out and hoses him off. He smiles. He’s a little killer. Hope you got a stout pair of boots to go along with that Ruger. That pistol is near the top of the list of firearms that I'd like to have in my arsenal. Bet you could knock the eye out of a cotton mouth at twenty feet with that iron.

I stayed in the hospital three days with him until his daughter was able to arrive and take over. It was his pride and joy. I really didn't want to accept it, but he insisted, since he likely will never be able to use it again. My son can hit a bottle cap at 30 feet with it. I'm not quite that good. The bullnose barrel of the Mark I and II give it a perfect balance when firing and reduce the rapid firing recoil significantly. With 22 mag, it stands up and talks. Take at least three magazines with you.
My sister once told me and when she was in bed there came a horrible racket and screeching from the kitchen. When she and her husband investigated, they found the family cat had a rat by the throat and was throttling it. Her husband told her to forget about it and they went back to sleep. In the morning, the cat was there but there was no sign of the rat. No one knows if the cat ate the entire rat.
My friends cat used to bring in birds and lizards. She would sit there and crunch them in front of you.
