WICHITA, Kansas (AP)- Media reports say that abortion provider Dr. George Tiller has been shot and killed at his Wichita church. Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortion. His clinic has repeatedly been the site of protests for about two decades. He was acquitted in March of misdemeanor charges stemming from procedures he performed, but moments after the verdict the state's medical board announced it was investigating allegations against him that are nearly identical to those the jury had rejected. Prosecutors had alleged that Tiller had in 2003 gotten second opinions from a doctor who was essentially an employee of his, not independent as state law requires, but a jury took only about an hour to find him not guilty of all 19 counts. Tiller, who could have faced a year in jail for even one conviction, stared straight ahead as the verdicts were read, with one of his attorneys patting his shoulder after the decision on the final count was declared. His wife, seated across the courtroom, fought back tears and nodded. The couple declined to speak to reporters afterward. Tiller, 67, has claimed that the prosecution was politically motivated. An attorney general who opposed abortion rights began the investigation into Tiller's clinic more than four years ago, but both his successor, who filed the criminal charges, and the current attorney general support abortion rights. Tiller has been a favored target of anti-abortion protesters, and he testified that he and his family have suffered years of harassment and threats. His clinic was the site of the 1991 "Summer of Mercy" protests marked by mass demonstrations and arrests. His clinic was bombed in 1985, and an abortion opponent shot him in both arms in 1993.

On one hand, I can't help but wonder why he bothered to go to church. On the other hand, going to church fit him like a glove. Hey, if about 50% of them support torture, what's wrong with murdering little babies? Usually these hypocrites murder people by proxy, he went out and did it himself. The concealed-carry people should demand equal time here, but will be drowned out by the ululating choicers. Ideally, another parishioner should have been packing and then immediately taken out the "pro life" "freedom fighter." I don't think that the average person on either side of the controversies that you allude to are represented among the parties to this tragedy. And I don't think this murder is emblematic of the attitudes, philosophies or behaviors you find among most "choicers" or "lifers" or gunners or anti-gunners. The problem is when it get personal and pathologically so. People get so tied up in their mutual animosities that they are driven insane, or should I say, drive themselves insane. That's the difference between this place and places like LP. Which bunch would you rather have a drink with? A 4um gathering might get a little raucus, but an LP meeting would be about three steps from a bar fight. You wouldn't want any pointy objects laying about.

Media reports say that I won't shed any tears over the death of a murderer. While I believe he should have been tried by a jury and executed for his crimes it would be hard to find a panel of jurors who haven't been so dumbed down that they would vote to convict a self-confessed killer. He didn't get anything he didn't deserve, that's for sure.

Of course the "good" doctor did nothing to trigger the demand for abortion. That lives in the hearts and souls of America's families. How did it get there? Who took their will to life? Who stripped their souls? Who planted the seeds of hereditary self-denial? Who took their sense of heritage? You can ban abortion but you can't make people want to raise families, not when their economic future is constantly unstable, deteriorating, or worse.

I think it has happened in three stages. First was the choice to pursue empire before the civil war began. A willingness to corporatize America had already manifested itself in the railroad building, and the industrial revolution was what propelled us to fight each other over whether or not we were a republic or an empire. According to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office website, 51-year-old Scott Roeder has been booked into to the Sedgwick County Jail shortly after 11:00 Sunday night. The Associated Press says Roeder was detained in the Kansas City area, according to Law Enforcement authorities in the area. I find myself in the rather uncomfortable position of agreeing with you, partially. If you beat your dog you will get more grief from the "justice" system than he ever got.
