Title: In speech in Cairo, Barack Obama seeks 'common ground' with Islam - Quotes Koran, Mentions 9-1-1 Source: Politico URL Source: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0609/23334.html Published: Jun 4, 2009 Author: MIKE ALLEN | 6/4/09 8:55 AM EDT Text Siz Post Date: 2009-06-04 09:09:30 by HAPPY2BME-4UM Keywords: NoneViews: 543 Comments: 40
CAIRO In remarks being translated live for broadcasts and Webcasts in every major language, President Barack Obama said Thursday that the United States wants common ground and a new beginning with the Muslim world, where Americas image plummeted with the Bush administrations response to the 9/11 attacks. "Much has been made of the fact that an African-American with the name Barack Hussein Obama could be elected President. But my personal story is not so unique," he said in the Grand Hall of Cairo University. "The dream of opportunity for all people has not come true for everyone in America, but its promise exists for all who come to our shores. The 55-minute speech was remarkable and historic not so much for the delivery or even the words, but for the context, the orator, the moment. Obama included blunt talk about the United States, Israel, Iraq, his predecessor and al Qaeda. I am aware that some question or justify the events of 9/11, he said, speaking before a red curtain and six pairs of U.S. and Egyptian flags. But let us be clear: al Qaeda killed nearly 3,000 people on that day. The president, who left the room to applause from an audience carefully chosen to reflect diverse perspectives, invoked the Holy Koran twice, and the Holy Bible once. Its easier to start wars than to end them he said. Its easier to blame others than to look inward; to see what is different about someone than to find the things we share. But we should choose the right path, not just the easy path. There is one rule that lies at the heart of every religion that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. [Applause] This truth transcends nations and peoples. Obama got a standing early ovation when he declared: I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear. See AlsoFull text of Barack Obama's speech But some audience members gasped when he followed that with: That same principle must apply to Muslim perceptions of America. Just as Muslims do not fit a crude stereotype, America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire. The speech delivered in Egypt, where the political opposition can be jailed, beaten or outlawed is a major test of Obamas ability to translate his appealing rhetoric into real change at what he acknowledged is a time of tension between the United States and Muslims around the world. Obama, who talked little about his own connections to Islam on the campaign trail, invoked what he called his own experience as he delivered on a campaign promise to make a major address on Muslim soil early in his presidency. I am a Christian, but my father came from a Kenyan family that includes generations of Muslims, he said. As a boy, I spent several years in Indonesia and heard the call of the azaan at the break of dawn and the fall of dusk. As a young man, I worked in Chicago communities where many found dignity and peace in their Muslim faith. The comments in what he called the timeless city of Cairo are by far the most extensive he has made about his Muslim roots. Obama added another personal note as he insisted on greater religious freedom throughout the world: I saw it firsthand as a child in Indonesia, where devout Christians worshiped freely in an overwhelmingly Muslim country. That is the spirit we need today. Watch: Mike Allen's VIDEO Blog of Obama's Middle East Trip.Conservative critics seized on a passage in which he said: Given our interdependence, any world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will inevitably fail. So whatever we think of the past, we must not be prisoners of it. Our problems must be dealt with through partnership; progress must be shared. However, Obama spoke bluntly of some of the sources of tension between the cultures, including head scarves and the role of women, but did not include the word terrorism or its variants. I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, he said. One based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.: On womens rights, the president drew applause when he said: I know there is debate about this issue. I reject the view of some in the West that a woman who chooses to cover her hair is somehow less equal, but I do believe that a woman who is denied an education is denied equality. And it is no coincidence that countries where women are well-educated are far more likely to be prosperous. And another applause line: Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons. Echoing a message aides had emphasized in their previews of the speech, Obama declared that change cannot happen overnight. No single speech can eradicate years of mistrust, nor can I answer in the time that I have all the complex questions that brought us to this point, Obama said. But I am convinced that in order to move forward, we must say openly the things we hold in our hearts, and that too often are said only behind closed doors. There must be a sustained effort to listen to each other; to learn from each other; to respect one another; and to seek common ground. Turning briefly to specifics, he said: We will expand exchange programs, and increase scholarships, like the one that brought my father to America, while encouraging more Americans to study in Muslim communities. And we will match promising Muslim students with internships in America; invest in on-line learning for teachers and children around the world; and create a new online network, so a teenager in Kansas can communicate instantly with a teenager in Cairo. Obama concluded with brief quotations from the Koran, the Talmud and the Bible the holy books of what he called the three great faiths. Then he added: The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is Gods vision. Now, that must be our work here on Earth. Thank you. And may Gods peace be upon you. The administration has been signaling a tougher line with Israel, and Obama made remarks that can be taken as sympathetic to Palestinians for what he called the daily humiliations large and small that come with occupation. So let there be no doubt: the situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable, he said. America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity, and a state of their own. In remarks that will likely rankle some supporters of Israel in the U.S. Congress, he added: Israelis must acknowledge that just as Israels right to exist cannot be denied, neither can Palestines. The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements. This construction violates previous agreements and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop. Israel must also live up to its obligations to ensure that Palestinians can live, and work, and develop their society.

President Obama was awarded Saudi Arabia's highest honor yesterday -- an elaborate gold necklace and medallion fit for a king or a rap mogul. "Goodness gracious, that's something there," an awestruck Obama said when a royal aide approached him with the massive chain. A beaming King Abdullah -- who hosted Obama in an ornate meeting room decked out with opulent chandeliers, marble columns and engraved mirrors -- presented the gift to the president. "Those are only given to the very few friends of the king, and you are certainly one of those," Abdullah said. Obama ducked slightly to allow the shorter man to drape the chain -- officially called the King Abdul Aziz Order of Merit -- around his neck. "I consider the king's friendship a great blessing, and I am very appreciative that he would bestow this honor on me during this visit," said Obama, who was on his first state visit to Saudi Arabia. Under federal rules, Obama must report the gift and is required to eventually turn it over to the National Archives or another federal institution. He smiled and posed for pics in his new bling, but took it off after a few minutes for "safekeeping." HAPPY2BME-4UM posted on 2009-06-04 9:12:29 ET (1 image) Reply Trace Private Reply #2. When inflation hits here with Category 5 force winds as some economists forecast, he's going to have his hands so full domestically that all the glittering forays to Berlin, London, Cairo and Riyadh will be but distant memories. The concern is that many peoples live in the Mideast, and they just happen to be Islamic. Khouri talked of his own Christianity. He wants Americans to see the Mideast as a region with certain common problems, rather than a monolithic group of Muslims. Khouri's main point was that Obama talked too much about Isalm in terms of continued, assumed divisions, even if he were trying to improve the situation. The buzz is that peoples across the Islamic world are for the most part living in tyrannical dictatorships linked to the present global order. Others have criticized Obama for speaking in Egypt, a police state which we help finance in order to facilitate peace with Israel. These are profound observations, and I think it shows Obama's continuing reliance on "Clash of Civilizations" thinking. I'll note that Khouri was interrupted by the host of NPR. Perhaps that was inevitable due to timing, but I resented the fact that a significant point was being made and NPR didn't have time to hear it out. Randge's observations that there are divisions in the west appear to be supported by this speech. Deasy posted on 2009-06-04 20:31:10 ET Reply Trace Private Reply #28. To: Deasy (#27) Very good! To: HAPPY2BME-4UM (#29) (Edited) ISLAMIC NATIONS ARE THE ONLY ONES ON EARTH THAT CARRY A DEATH SENTENCE FOR * NOT * BEING A MUSLIM These are hot topics, and I like to be cool when discussing them. Or at least be accurate. There is no sentence of death for not being a Muslim in Muslim lands. The ultimate sanction may be applied in many of those lands (not all of them) for apostasy. "Today apostasy is punishable by death in the countries of Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Qatar, Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Afghanistan and Mauritania" - Wiki. That means once a Muslim, always a Muslim. It's like being made in the Mob. (Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in. ...) Seriously though, there is an element of coersion here that runs counter to our modern conceptions of freedom of conscience. And I will remind you, as I remind people over at that other place, these are very modern ideas. A couple of hundred years ago, if one of your forefathers had woken up in his bed in some European village (assuming you have European forefathers) and said to himself, "Hey, I don't wanna be a Christian any more." he would have been in some deep shit. He might as well have hung himself from a stout beam in his cottage. "Excommunicate yourself? Are you out of your mind??" No one in Christendom would - or could - have done business with you. They might well have burned you for a witch. You probably know what it says in the Bible better than I do H2, maybe you can enlighten us about what Scripture says regarding apostasy. I don't believe that there are explicit sanctions for it, but you know it would have been dealt with rather harshly in the West, until rather recent times. The thing about Islam is that Mohammed made up for the fact that the Bible is kind of loose about a lot of things. The genius in the words of the Gospel is that its primary aim is to establish first principles by which we live, rather than a set of complex strictures which you might find in, say, the Talmud. The Koran is a very literal document in which you read God, or Gabriel, depending on the verse, laying out explicit rules about what to do and what not to do and what the punishments are for not following the rules. A lot of it is in the imperative mood, and so repetitively so that I often find it boring reading. But as explicit as the Koran is, the sanction of death for leaving Islam seems to be based on this verse in the second surah of the Koran: 2:217 They question thee (O Muhammad) with regard to warfare in the sacred month. Say: Warfare therein is a great (transgression), but to turn (men) from the way of Allah, and to disbelieve in Him and in the Inviolable Place of Worship, and to expel His people thence, is a greater with Allah; for persecution is worse than killing. And they will not cease from fighting against you till they have made you renegades from your religion, if they can. And whoso becometh a renegade and dieth in his disbelief: such are they whose works have fallen both in the world and the Hereafter. Such are rightful owners of the Fire: they will abide therein. You can see that there is generous room for interpretation here. And religious religious scholars, authoritative theologians have disagreed about what it means. See Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apos tasy_in_Islam Here is more than you ever want to know about apostasy in Islam from the above: Apostasy in Islam (Arabic: 5;5;8;3;5;3;, irtidd or ridda46;) is commonly defined as the rejection in word or deed of their former religion (apostasy) by a person who was previously a follower of Islam. The four major Sunni Madh'hab (schools of Islamic jurisprudence) all agree that apostasy is the gravest sin in Islam and require the application of the death penalty as long as the individual does not do so in ignorance or under duress, except for tha Hanafi school which regards women to be exempt[1][2]. They also differentiate between harmful apostasy and harmless apostasy[3] (also known as major and minor apostasy)[4]. According to Wael Hallaq nothing of the apostasy law are derived from the Qur'an,[5] although the jurist al-Shafi'i interpreted the Qu'ranic verse 2:217 as providing the main evidence for apostasy being a capital crime in Islam.[6] Some Islamic jurists, such as Hanafi jurist Sarakhsi,[7] Maliki jurist Abu al- Walid al-Baji, and Hanbali jurist Ibn Taymiyyah,[8] and some contemporary Islamic jurists, such as Shafi`i Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa[9][10] and Shi'a Grand Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri,[11] argued or issued fatwas that either the changing of religion is not punishable or is only punishable under restricted circumstances[12][13][14][15] Some groups within Islam such as the Shi'a Ismaili reject death for apostasy altogether. Some prominent contemporary examples of death sentences threatened or issued for apostasy include Salman Rushdie, who was condemned to death in 1989 by Ayatollah Khomeini,[16] (ruler of Iran at the time) for his book The Satanic Verses; and Abdul Rahman, an Afghan convert to Christianity who was arrested and jailed on the charge of rejecting Islam in 2006 but later released as mentally incompetent.[17] This article is a good read, and I suggest that you take a look at the end of the article where many particular cases of apostasy are discussed. I think you'll see that much of the hell apostates get in modern Muslim countries comes about through the acts of vigilantes rather than through judicial action. I'll leave you at the end of this long post with this case in Egypt The Mohammed Hegazy case, shows the huge problems in that country for those wishing to leave Islam and be recognised as a member of another religion - where Hegazy has suffered death threats from family and prominent Islamic figures alike. A Judge ruled "He (Hegazy) can believe whatever he wants in his heart, but on paper he cant convert." He is the first Egyptian Muslim convert to Christianity to seek official recognition of his conversion from the Egyptian Government. In February 2009, a second case came to court, of convert to Christianity Maher Ahmad El-Mootahssem Bellah El-Gohary, whose effort to officially convert to Christianity, faced opposing lawyers who advocated he be convicted of apostasy, or leaving Islam, and sentenced to death. Our rights in Egypt, as Christians or converts, are less than the rights of animals, El-Gohary said. We are deprived of social and civil rights, deprived of our inheritance and left to the fundamentalists to be killed. Nobody bothers to investigate or care about us. El-Gohary, 56, has been attacked in the street, spat at and knocked down in his effort to win the right to officially convert. He said he and his 14-year-old daughter continue to receive death threats by text message and phone call. [54] Let me say in conclusion I find such actions on the part of any authority repugnant. Should such laws come into force in my country I should be forced to take up my rifle with along with my compatriots and entirely extirpate such oppression from the land. As I explained to the hard heads over on the othah site, I only got interested in the subject because I lived in M.E. and because I'm interested in history & current events. It's not being a non-Muslim in those countries so much as it is leaving it. That's verboten. Some of the oldest congregations of Christians are in Iraq, that is if the current chaos there hasn't driven them out. There are Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians and a host of crazy, exotic forms worship that hardly anyone here is aware of in those countries. But you practically always have to inherit the right to practice those religions from your parents. Those religious minorities in Muslim countries are like mini-nations sometimes fighting for their survival. When inflation hits here with Category 5 force winds as some economists forecast, he's going to have his hands so full domestically that all the glittering forays to Berlin, London, Cairo and Riyadh will be but distant memories.

Hear Hear!

Some Mideast intellectuals today, including Rami Khouri, editor at large of the Lebanon Daily Star (see agenceglobal.com) are happy about the speech, but are expressing concerns about its language.

ISLAMIC NATIONS ARE THE ONLY ONES ON EARTH THAT CARRY A DEATH SENTENCE FOR * NOT * BEING A MUSLIM These are hot topics, and I like to be cool when discussing them.
These are hot topics, and I like to be cool when discussing them.
(Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in. ...)
Seriously though, there is an element of coersion here that runs counter to our modern conceptions of freedom of conscience.
But as explicit as the Koran is, the sanction of death for leaving Islam seems to be based on this verse in the second surah of the Koran:
2:217 They question thee (O Muhammad) with regard to warfare in the sacred month.
See Wiki:

Here is more than you ever want to know about apostasy in Islam from the above:
Apostasy in Islam (Arabic: 5;5;8;3;5;3;, irtidd or ridda46;) is commonly defined as the rejection in word or deed of their former religion (apostasy) by a person who was previously a follower of Islam. Some prominent contemporary examples of death sentences threatened or issued for apostasy include Salman Rushdie, who was condemned to death in 1989 by Ayatollah Khomeini,[16] (ruler of Iran at the time) for his book The Satanic Verses; and Abdul Rahman, an Afghan convert to Christianity who was arrested and jailed on the charge of rejecting Islam in 2006 but later released as mentally incompetent.[17]

This article is a good read, and I suggest that you take a look at the end of the article where many particular cases of apostasy are discussed. I think you'll see that much of the hell apostates get in modern Muslim countries comes about through the acts of vigilantes rather than through judicial action.
I'll leave you at the end of this long post with this case in
Egypt The Mohammed Hegazy case, shows the huge problems in that country for those wishing to leave Islam and be recognised as a member of another religion - where Hegazy has suffered death threats from family and prominent Islamic figures alike. A Judge ruled "He (Hegazy) can believe whatever he wants in his heart, but on paper he cant convert." He is the first Egyptian Muslim convert to Christianity to seek official recognition of his conversion from the Egyptian Government. Are you a Muslim? In no wise.

Winter 1993, Vol. 22, No. 2 page 30 How David Koresh Was Foiled in Israel by David Bedein When Branch Davidian leader David Koresh, whose real name is Vernon Howell, visited Israel in 1990, he shared his plans to convert Jews to Christianity with Rabbi Avraham Feld, founder of the Maccabee Foundation. Koresh studied at several yeshivot, partook in traditional Sabbath meals, and opened his home to Jews who needed a place to stay. However, Feld successfully intervened before Koresh was able to bring a group of young Israelis back to the United States. Only Pablo Cohen, an Israeli musician, joined Koresh and remained loyal to him, eventually dying in the fire at Waco, Texas. reformjudaismmag.net/cgi-...rch.pl?key=entire_archive star-of-david.blogspot.co...e.html#117042027609895057 Picture of David Koresh flag/This flag was flown by the Branch Davidians over the Mount Carmel Center during the 1993 Waco Siege. It's easy to tell the difference between a cult and a traditional religion. Just ask CNN or Fox news. They'll inform and promptly.

I wouldn't ast those bastards, Deasy, I would ask you. I'm sure you would have something intelligent to say about it.
